Wayne "Red" Tanner of Bracey; three sisters, Mildred T. Glasscock and Shirley T. Lundy, both of Brodnax, and Frances T. THOMPSON
Mrs. Vernie J. Thompson, age 85, of South Hill, and formerly of Rehoboth, Va., died Sunday, August 4, 2002. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Barry Piercy of South Hill; two grandchildren, Kristen and Devin Piercy; a sister, Leola Thompson; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted on Tuesday, August 6, at 2 p.m. by Rev. Bobby Adams at Farrar Funeral Home, with interment to follow at Mt. Olivet Christian Church Cemetery. WALKER
Lois Wills Walker went to be with our Lord on Saturday, August 3, 2002. Lois was the widow of the late Robert Otey Walker Jr., and the daughter of the late Buford Cox Wills and Carrie Tyler Wills formerly of Richmond, Va. She was a member of Thalia Lynn Baptist Church, the Rachel Sunday School class and the Tuesday morning Bible Study. She was also a member of Thalia Friendship Circle of the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters for over 40 years. Survivors include two devoted sons, Robert Otey Walker III and his wife, Anita Blythe Walker of Virginia Beach, and James Freeman Walker of Portsmouth; four grandchildren, Jennifer Blythe Walker of Chesapeake, Kelly Walker Gregory and her husband, David Lee Gregory of Virginia Beach, Thomas James Walker and Nathan Wills Walker of Portsmouth; two great-granddaughters, Chelsey Renee Gregory and Jordan Lee Gregory of Virginia Beach; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Glenn W. Tharp; a nephew, W.D. "Skip" Tharp and his wife, Kathy Terrel Tharp, all of Bedford, Va.; a great-nephew, Christopher Freeman Tharp and his wife, Sarah Glass of Lynchburg, Va. The family will receive friends at 1717 Rally Dr., Broad Bay Estates, Virginia Beach, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Monday. Services will be held at Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel, with Rev. Mark Olson officiating at 1 p.m. Tuesday, August 6, 2002. AVERY
Dorothy Pike Avery died peacefully Monday, November 12, 2001 following a short illness. For the past year she has been a resident at Beth Shalom Gardens. The daughter of the late Chester and Gertrude Pike was born in Vancouver, Wash. on March 25, 1907. She was married to the late Rev. Frederick H. Avery for 45 years. They served various congregations in California, Colorado, and Washington. Mrs. Avery lived in Richmond for the last two years. She is survived by a daughter, Joan Avery Bishop of Richmond, Va.; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by another daughter, Carol Avery Coggins, whose husband, Jack E. Coggins, lives in Woodburn, Ore. A longtime resident of Bainbridge Island, Wash., she was a member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church. Since moving to Richmond she has attended Christ Church Episcopal in Glen Allen. A memorial service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Christ Church followed by interment at the Cathedral Church of St. Mark in Seattle, Wash. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to Christ Church Episcopal, 5000 Pouncey Tract Rd., Glen Allen, Va. 23059.

BERTRON
Dorothy Shuck Bertron died at home Tuesday, November 13, 2001. Born in Fresno, Calif. on April 18, 1925, she is survived by her husband, Jack Sr., Bumpass, Va.; son, Jack Jr., Alexandria, Va.; daughter, Peggy Anderson, Manassas, Va.; granddaughters Katherine Bertron and Patti Compton; aunt, Florence Hill, Arlington, Va.; and many friends. Remains rest at the Woodward Funeral Home, 200 Fredericksburg Ave., Louisa, Va., where services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, November 19. Interment and graveside service to follow at 12 noon Tuesday, November 20 at Quantico National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lake Anna Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 101, Bumpass, Va., 23024, or charity of choice.

CARTER
Mrs. Rachel L. Carter, 74, of Richmond, formerly of Mt. Airy, N.C. went to be with her beloved husband, Stewart, on Tuesday, November 13, 2001. She is survived by two sons, Craig Lawrence and his wife, Libby, and Ron Carter; one daughter, Faye Kennedy and her husband, Mark; two brothers, Perry and Albert Lawrence; one sister, Lela Doby; five grandchildren, Rachelle, Shawn, Joshua, Daniel and Lindsay; one great-grandchild, Skyler. Her remains rest at the Central Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave., where the family will receive friends on Thursday (today) from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., and where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, November 16, 2001. Interment Westhampton Memorial Park.

CLARKE
Eleanor Tolson Clarke, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend departed this life on November 14, 2001 to be with our Lord and Saviour after a long, courageous battle with cancer. She was a member of Victory Baptist Church, Warsaw. She is survived by her husband, William M. Clarke; her two sons and daughters-in-law, William Dale and Gwen Clarke of Tappahannock, David Wesley and Mary Clarke of Lynchburg; her grandchildren, Olivia, Will, Madison and Wesley Clarke; two brothers, Robert H. Tolson of Woodbridge and Norman R. Tolson Sr. of Village; one half-sister, Mae Richards of Oldhams. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday in the Marks-Bristow Funeral Home. Interment Essex Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Mabel Wallace Clem, age 85, of Keysville, died Wednesday, November 14, 2001. Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Patricia C. and Roger Wilmouth; one granddaughter, Christia L. Wilmouth, all of Keysville; two brothers, Howard Wallace of Keysville, Reginald Wallace of Richmond; three sisters, Madeline W. Payne, Renna W. Morgan, Catherine W. Vassar, all of Richmond. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Browning Funeral Home with interment in the Cool Springs Christian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday.

COURTNEY
Willie Thomas Courtney, 67, formerly of Caroline Co., Va., passed away Saturday, November 10, 2001 in an Arlington, Va. hospital. He is survived by six sisters, Vernelle Mamou of Richmond, Margaret Bazley of Arlington, Va., Doris Jackson of Bailey's Crossroads, Va., Blanche Twyman of Lanham, Md., Alta Harris and Emma King, both of Philadelphia, Pa.; two brothers, Ashby Courtney of Dawn, Va. and Donald Courtney of Detroit, Mich.; four brothers-in-law, Archield Twyman of Lanham, Md., Bill Jackson of Bailey's Crossroads, Va., Billy Boulware of Ruther Glen, Va. and devoted brother-in-law, Moody Bazley of Arlington, Va.; three grandchildren, Dennis, Matasha and Simona Harris; one great-grandson, Quaion of Dawn, Va.; many nieces and nephews including a devoted niece, Jill Price and nephew, Patrick Mamou Jr. of Richmond; devoted friend Portia Etheridge of Alexandria, Va. and a host of other relatives and friends. The family will receive friends on Saturday, November 17, 2001 at 10 a.m. followed by an 11 a.m. service in the chapel at Green Funeral Home, 814 Franklin St., Alexandria, Va. Rev. Richard O. Green officiating. Interment will follow in Mount Comfort Cemetery, Alexandria, Va.

CRUMP
Pauline Knowles Crump, 72, widow of George C. Crump Sr., died Tuesday, November 13, 2001 at the Masonic Home of Virginia, where she had been a resident for seven years. She is survived by her children, Randy A. Crump, Darrell Ann Belcher and Susan Cross; stepchildren, Carolyn Chappell, Carson, Va., Thomas Crump, Chester, Va., Nancy Jones, Charles City, Va.; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sister, Charlotte Blankenship, Newport News, Va.; and brother, Harry Knowles, Denbeigh, Va. The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Rd., Midlothian. Funeral services are private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Chester Masonic Lodge.

CUNNUP
After an eight-year courageous and inspirational battle with cancer, A. Maxine Cunnup, 63, lost the fight at a local hospital November 12, 2001 in Norfolk. Her positive and uplifting attitude helped many people during their times of trouble. Prior to her illness she was very active in community affairs, the Girl Scouts of America, the United Way and the International Azalea Festival Mrs. Cunnup was born in Leinor, N.C. She was the widow of Melvin L. Cunnup. Mrs. Cunnup was employed with the Bank of America with 28 years of service. Survivors include her mother, Ruby Arvillia Waldrop of Rock Hill, S.C.; three daughters, Anita Miller of Virginia Beach, Kartina Cunnup and Connie Cunnup, both of Chesapeake; five sisters, Marie Childers of York, S.C., Mable Frazer of Charlotte, N.C., Mozell Robinson of Charlotte, N.C., Monteen Ashley of Bessmer, Ala., Margaret Dillinger of York, S.C.; six brothers, Joe Waldrop of York, S.C., J.D. Waldrop of Denver, N.C., J.R. Waldrop of Georgetown, S.C., Jack Waldrop of Greenville, S.C., Jerry Waldrop and Jan Waldrop, both of Rock Hill, N.C.; three grandchildren, Austin Miller and Jonathan and Justin Moots. A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, November 17, 2001 at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments Chesapeake Chapel by the Reverends Paul Eure, Pastor Aubrey Maye, Labron Palmer and her brother, Jack Waldrop. Burial will be at Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. Floyd Neal Davis of Richmond peacefully entered eternal rest Wednesday, November 14, 2001. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert B. Davis and Willard Davis Jr., both of King William. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Jenelle A. Davis; son and daughter-in-law, Floyd Neal Jr. and Donna S. Davis; daughter and son-in-law, Jackie D. and Paul M. Brennan; four grandchildren, Ashley N., Brian C., Kaitlin H. and Rachael M. Brennan, all of Richmond; two sisters, Edna D. Richardson of Aylett, Virginia and Ruth D. Verlander of Harradsburg, Ky. The family will receive friends at Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Road, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Hatcher Memorial Baptist Church. Interment Greenwood Memorial Gardens. Mr. Davis was a member of Hatcher Memorial Baptist Church, WWII Navy veteran, having served in the Pacific on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Essex and a retiree from Vepco with 35 years service. Smithey Lee Davis Sr., age 69, of Mechanicsville, formerly of Tappahannock, died Tuesday, November 13, 2001. Survived by wife, Nancy Davis; six children, Smithey L. Davis Jr., Wanda D. Salinas, Peggy S. Braswell, Virginia E. Mayer, Nancy H. and Brandon L. Davis; devoted mother-in-law, Virginia A. Moorefield; father-in-law, William T. Carter; four brothers, two sisters, nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren. Mr. Davis was a Korean War Army veteran. The family will receive friends at K.L. Mary Frances Fisher of Richmond passed away November 13, 2001. She was a retired floral designer and longtime member of Barton Garden Club. She was preceded in death by her son, John Burt Fisher. She is survived by her son, Henry J. Fisher Jr. and his wife, Shirley; a sister, Ola G. Gittman of Colonial Heights; three devoted grandsons, Ronald L. Fisher, James L. Fisher and his wife, Patricia and their children, Jennifer and Jonathan, and Matthew B. Fisher and his wife, Jamie and their children, Brendan and Alex; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; two nieces, Barbara Kauffman and Patricia Flood; one nephew, James Gittman. Remains rest at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 West Broad St., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and where a Christian Wake Service will be held at 7 p.m. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held 11 a.m. Friday, November 16, 2001 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 8200 Woodman Rd. Departed this life November 12, 2001, James J. Funn of 4635 Studley Rd. Retired U.S. Postal Service, U.S. Army Korean veteran, he is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Maude E. Funn; one son, Carlos L. Funn; two sisters, Carrie F. Kelly and devoted, Darnella Bradley; several nieces, nephews and cousins, two sisters-in-law, three brothers-in-law and other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Joseph Jenkins Jr. Funeral Home, 2011 Grayland Ave. Funeral Friday, 1 p.m. at the chapel in Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Amelia, Virginia, with Mr. Fred Bailey officiating. Family and friends assemble at the funeral home 11:45 a.m. Friday.
