Dr. Robert F. Woodward
Dec 09, 2001
Though Dr. Robert F. Woodward could call himself retired, his resume and list of activities proved otherwise. A full-time Baptist minister for nearly 40 years, he was well-known in his 15 years of retirement as an interim pastor with an ability to lead pastorless flocks through transition.
Mr. Woodward, who retired to Richmond in 1986, died Thursday at the age of 80 after a reoccurrence of melanoma. At the time of his death he was president of the Virginia Baptist Historical Society and The Center for Baptist Heritage and Studies at the University of Richmond.
He began his career in 1949 and after 25 years in Maryland, where he served as pastor of First Baptist Church in Princess Anne and later First Baptist Church in Frederick, he pastored First Baptist Church of Winchester from 1974 to 1986.
In retirement he served on an interim basis for many Richmond area churches including Bon Air, Derbyshire, Huguenot Road and Winfree Memorial Baptist churches. He served Ginter Park Baptist Church twice and also commuted to interim positions in Virginia Beach, McLean and Colonial Beach.
"When you're an interim pastor, you come in at a time when for one reason or another a church is hurting," said J. Darrell Foster, former president of the Baptist General Assembly of Virginia and a parishioner at Thaila Lynn Baptist in Virginia Beach where Dr. Woodward served as interim pastor in 1988.
"He had a real gift to step in and help churches grieve while paving the way for change. He always had such a positive attitude."
His trademark opening for sermons, "It's a beautiful day," became more than an expression of his positive outlook. It was a statement of healing and comfort for the churches he served on an interim basis, Foster said.
Mr. Woodward's daughter, Claire Wiles of Alexandria, said her father "definitely developed a relationship with each church. He knew that a church's membership has a unique personality and he wanted to know something about them before he took the assignment."
In a 1991 interview, Mr. Woodward said, "I consider myself a very fortunate fellow. I absolutely love retirement, but I still get to preach, and I love preaching. I get to do what I love to do, then come home and work in my garden."
When the Center for Baptist Heritage and Studies was created in 1999, Mr. Woodward was heavily involved in the planning of the center. He was named the organization's first president.
The Winston-Salem, N.C., native was the first in his family to attend college and earned a degree from Wheaton College in Wheaton, Ill. He received a master's of divinity degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., and was later awarded an honorary doctorate from Alderson-Broaddus College in West Virginia.
In addition to his daughter, he is survived by his wife of 56 years, Jean Nelson Woodward; three sons, Robert F. Woodward Jr. of Pasadena, Md.; Peter N. Woodward of Richmond and Jonathan R. Woodward of Fredericksburg; and a brother, Donald R. Woodward of Mount Dora, Fla.
Mr. Woodward was a member of River Road Church, Baptist, where a memorial service will be held Monday at 1 p.m.

Augustine Cunningham, priest, dies
Nov 13, 2002
The Rev. Augustine W. Cunningham taught for more than 30 years at Benedictine High School, where he was also a guidance counselor and guidance director.
Besides teaching English, religion and journalism, the Catholic priest served as the school's drama director and publications adviser, leading students to earn awards for drama productions, newspapers and yearbooks.
"He was a dynamic personality. He was very well-loved by his students," said the Rev. Adrian Harmening, a colleague since the 1960s and pastor of St. Joseph Tridentine Catholic Church in Richmond.
Mr. Cunningham died Sunday at St. Joseph's Home in Henrico County. He was 68.
He had lived at the home since 1994, when he suffered a stroke and later a brain aneurysm.
"The aneurysm incapacitated him," Harmening said. "He was comatose more than three months, and they didn't expect him to live. He pulled out of it, but the quality of his life was never the same."
In 1975, Mr. Cunningham was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. In 1985, he stepped down as a guidance counselor but remained on the Benedictine faculty as a part-time religion teacher until he suffered a stroke.
Mr. Cunningham was a monk at the Benedictine Abbey of Mary, Mother of the Church, in Goochland. The Benedictine order's main mission is teaching and counseling.
"He came to do parish work at St. Benedict Priory in 1961 and got involved at the school," Harmening said.
"Drama was his big thing, from the 1960s to about 1975. He had all kinds of imagination for scenery work, for staging backdrops," he said. "His sets were outstanding." Among his productions were "Teahouse of the August Moon," "Mr. Roberts" and "Stalag 17."
"He was an outstanding English teacher," Harmening said. "He was a judge in Virginia high school yearbook competitions. . . . He did beautiful publications. But his forte was drama."
A Louisville, Ky., native, Mr. Cunningham attended Catholic schools in Louisville and Paducah, Ky., and Savannah, Ga. He earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy from Belmont Abbey College.
He took vows as a Benedictine monk at Belmont Abbey in 1955. He studied theology at Belmont Abbey Seminary and was ordained a priest there in 1961.
He came to St. Benedict Priory for his fifth year of theology study. In 1962, he was appointed assistant pastor of St. Benedict Church.
He did graduate studies in counseling and guidance at the University of Virginia, where he earned his master's degree in 1965.
"I used to serve Mass for him during early service," said Cary Bliley. "One thing that was distinctive about him was that his eyes stood out. And when he talked, it was very soothing. He always made you feel at peace. He always seemed to be at peace in his life."
Survivors include a sister, Nancy Cunningham, of Atlanta.
A Christian Vigil will be held Wednesday at 5 p.m. at St. Joseph's Home, 1503 Michael Road. A Mass of Christian Burial will be said Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Benedictine Abbey of Mary, Mother of the Church, 12829 River Road, Goochland. Burial will be in the abbey cemetery.
