Dr. John R. Saunders
Jan 24, 2001
For more than 20 years as administrator at Westbrook Psychiatric Hospital, Dr. John R. Saunders prided himself in running a tight ship, but never at the expense of his patients or staff.
"He was very much of a master of getting things in good shape," said Dr. Saunders' son, John R. "Jack" Saunders Jr. of Richmond. "He appreciated order, but he appreciated the people around him and the work they did."
Despite holding the top administrative post at the hospital, Dr. Saunders always maintained a patient case load equal to any of his subordinates. He arrived each day at 6 a.m. to begin his rounds.
Dr. Saunders, 96, of Richmond, who retired in the mid-1980s as director at Westbrook after a career spanning nearly 60 years in medicine, died Monday.
The hospital closed last year. Dr. Saunders came to Westbrook in 1945 as a staff physician.
A native of Lewiston, N.C., Dr. Saunders entered Wake Forest College at age 16 to study medicine.
During the depression, he was a general practitioner in his hometown. He joined the staff at State Hospital in North Carolina in 1937, eventually rising to superintendent of the facility.
After Pearl Harbor, Dr. Saunders attempted to resign from the hospital to join the Navy, but North Carolina's governor persuaded him to stay.
Though he was sought after as an administrator, Dr. Saunders' first love was his patients. "My dad was one who loved to take up a challenge," said Barbara Brown of Wake Forest, N.C. "He just loved to see people get better."
Dr. Saunders was a member of the American Psychiatric Association and was president of the state chapter, formerly the Neuropsychiatric Society of Virginia. He was also a past president of the National Association of Private Psychiatric Hospitals.
In addition to his daughter and son, Dr. Saunders is survived by another daughter, Janice Hemric of North Canton, Ohio, and a sister, Janice Jilcott of Lewiston, N.C. He was the widower of Vera Coxwell Saunders, to whom he was married for 59 years.
A funeral will be conducted at the Central Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave., on Wednesday at 11 a.m. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Jon Longaker dies
Jul 27, 2002
At the beginning of his teaching career at Randolph-Macon College, Jon Dasu Longaker was the sole fine arts faculty member.
He started as an adjunct instructor in the fall of 1952, teaching one art history class. Before the academic year was up, the school's president, Dr. J. Earl Moreland, hired him to start a fine arts program.
"I was asked to teach one course in art history, one in studio art and when Dr. Moreland heard that I liked classical music, one in music appreciation," he wrote in a history of the school's theater program. He also became a drama instructor and director of the Randolph-Macon Players.
"He did everything except direct the glee club," said his wife, Lyde.
Shortly after he joined the faculty, Mr. Longaker began stringing as an art and theater critic for the Richmond Times-Dispatch. His byline appeared for about three decades.
In the last 4½ years, Mr. Longaker fought ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. He died Friday in his Ashland home at age 82.
Before his 1990 retirement from the college, he helped build a department that now offers degree programs that include music, drama, studio arts and arts management.
Mrs. Longaker said her husband was continually expanding the college's art history offerings to include courses on such topics as native American and Chinese art. He was keenly interested in the art of Mexico and led many student and community groups on art exploration trips to Mexico as well as Europe.
He wrote a monthly column on art for "Commonwealth" magazine and was the author of the textbook, "Art, Style and History," published in 1970.
As a critic, he was sometimes criticized for reviews that often pushed the positive, as he wrote in his 1962 "Art in Richmond" column, "My answer to this is that I want to encourage, not stifle art in Richmond; that by explaining what I like about a picture or statue I also infer what I do not like."
In 1999, the college honored him with the Noe/Kilgore Retired Faculty Award, which recognizes exemplary teaching. At its 2002 commencement, R-MC awarded the first Jon D. Longaker Student Art History Award, an endowed prize that will be given annually.
"Jon shared generously his love, his knowledge of art and his good humor with many people, young and old," said Michael Carter, executive director of development at the college and a former student. "He bestowed much happiness and wisdom upon those he has left behind."
Born in Switzerland, Mr. Longaker spent his early childhood in Italy and Germany and came to the United States with his mother and stepfather at age 9.
He graduated from high school in Salem and earned a degree at the University of Pennsylvania before serving as a communications officer in the Navy during World War II.
In 1952, after four years of graduate study at Columbia University, he came to Richmond as a research assistant at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Eliza Longaker, of Ashland; three sons, Mark Longaker, of Ashland, Jonathan Longaker, of Zurich, Switzerland, and Ramsey Longaker, of Pittsburgh; and two grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at St. James the Less Episcopal Church in Ashland.
