During her early life she was professionally employed by the U.S. Corps of Engineers in Chicago, Ill. and in the Philippine Islands where she met her future husband at Camp O'Donnell (the end of the infamous death march during the Japanese invasion). Following a four year tour of duty in Alaska prior to its Statehood, Colonel and Mrs. Mason settled at their farm, 'Marl Hill', in King William County while Colonel Mason served as Inspector General for the State of Virginia. It was during that time that they became fosterparents and godparents. They were very active in county affairs involving youth activities and the restoration of little St. David's Episcopal Church. During a tour in West Germany in 1960 while Colonel Mason was Commanding Officer of Frankfurt Post, Mrs. Mason was elected President of the Frankfurt American Women's Club and served as director of Red Cross Volunteers. She worked in conjunction with the German Red Cross Volunteers, which was headed by H.R.H. Margarethe of Hesse, Aunt to Prince Philip of Great Britain. She was active in running the local Episcopal Church school as well as on the board of the Marianum Kinderheim, sponsored by her club. The Kinderheim sheltered orphaned and displaced children from labor and internment camps in the war zones. For this she was the first American woman to be decorated by the Polish Guard with the "Polish Badge of Honor". In October 1962, she was chosen "U.S. Lady of the Month" by the publication U.S. Lady. Mrs. Jacqueline Kennedy was among the distinguished board of judges. Upon their return to the U.S., Mrs. Mason resumed her work with local community, youth and church activities. She served as volunteer director of Upper King William County Youth Center and a term as President of the Women's Club. In 1971, having retired from the Army, Colonel and Mrs. Mason returned to Hampton and undertook the restoration of "Finn House", circa 1719 and have resided there until the present. Colonel Mason died in 1994. Mrs. Mason, though physically handicapped, devoted the next 11 years as a volunteer to the Juvenile Detention Home. During this time she was nominated and awarded "Volunteer of the Year" for the Peninsula, and subsequently by the Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority International she was awarded the "Diana" award and named to the Distinguished International Academy of Noble Achievement for exceptional service to humanity on April 28, 1979. More recently she joined the Literacy Council as a tutor. She was a patron of the Hampton History Museum Association and a member of the Harris Creek Garden Club.
