HORSLEY
Margaret Utley Horsley, 82, of Richmond, died April 10, 2001. She was preceded in death by her husband, William S. Horsley. Survivors include one daughter, Brenda H. Unger; one brother, Ernest Utley of Punta Gorda, Fla.; one granddaughter, Marcia Collins; and two great-granddaughters, Kaitlyn Harper and Macy Collins. Mrs. Horsley was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday (today), and where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday. Interment Dale Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 4101 Fordham Rd, Richmond, Va. 23236.

JEFFRIES
Cynthia L. Jeffries was called home on April 5, 2001. She was born August 2, 1954, to Chris Jackson and the late Mary Jackson. She resided in Richmond, Va., the majority of her life. She received an education in Henrico County Public School System. Cynthia was a loving and supportive mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She leaves to cherish her fond memories her two daughters, Sharon Lumpkin and Wanda Taylor; one son, Earl Jeffries Jr.; father, Chris Jackson Sr.; eight grandchildren, one brother, three sisters, two sons-in-law, one daughter-in-law, two stepsisters, two stepbrothers, and a host of nieces and nephews and other relatives. Funeral service will be held April 12, 2001, at 2 p.m. from Chiles Funeral Home, 2100 Fairmount Ave. Interment Jackson Farm, Louisa County.

KIRKUP
Katherine W. Kirkup, age 89, of Richmond, Va., formerly of Weems, Va., died Monday, April 9, 2001. She was the widow of Thomas J. Kirkup Jr. and is survived by a son, Thomas J. Kirkup, Richmond, Va.; two daughters, Carol K. Blomstrom, La Jolla, Calif. and Alice K. Meeter, Waynesboro, Va.; seven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, April 12, 2001, in Kilmarnock United Methodist Church, Kilmarnock, Va., with interment to follow in Historic Christ Church Burying Ground, Irvington, Va. The family will receive friends at the church following the interment.

KNIGHTON
Benjamin Phillip Knighton, 26, a resident of Buckingham County, died April 6, 2001. He was the manager of the N.A.P.A. store in Dillwyn and was a graduate of Buckingham County High School and had served in the U.S. Navy. He is survived by his father, Benjamin Roy Knighton III of Scottsville; his mother, Audrey L. Knighton of Dillwyn; his paternal grandmother, Mae Knighton of Arvonia; his stepmother, Carolyn T. Knighton of Scottsville; two brothers, Scott Knighton of Cicero, Ind., and Troy Knighton of Alexandria. A memorial service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn, with interment in Buckingham Baptist Church Cemetery, Gold Hill.

KOVACS
Joseph Kovacs, 71, of Sandston, died Tuesday, April 10, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Martha L. Kovacs; one son and daughter-in-law, Joseph III and Bonnie J. Kovacs; one daughter, Sophia Kovacs; one sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Julius Cziglan; three sisters and family in Hungary; nephew and niece, Johnny Cziglan and Beata Willison. Mr. Kovacs was an employee of the Great Coastal Express with 36 years of service. Remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, and where services will be held 2 p.m. Friday. Interment Washington Memorial Park.

LANE
Murray B. Lane Jr. of Richmond, Va., died April 8, 2001. He was born April 16, 1919, in Selma, N.C. He was preceded in death by his wife of more than 50 years, Sandra K. Lane. He was the founding partner in the accounting firm of Lane and Associates and the owner of Holiday Bowl in Chester, Va. He is survived by a son, Richard "Dick" Lane and his wife, Ellen of Yorktown, Va.; a daughter, Meda Lane and her husband, Christopher English of Richmond, Va.; and a sister, Marjorie L. Warren of West Palm Beach, Fla. Mr. Lane was a Navy veteran of WWII, a graduate of Reserve University, class of 1950, and a member of the Rotary. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Road. Funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Noah's Children, 6954 Forest Hill Ave., Richmond, Va. 23225 or Forest View Volunteer Rescue Squad, 8008 Midlothian Turnpike, Richmond, Va. 23225.

LIGHTFOOT
Deaconess Mildred L. Lightfoot, age 95, of 2301 Second Ave., died April 8, 2001. Surviving are three daughters, Ophelia A. Dean, Mildred C. Lightfoot and Juliet L. Greene; two sons, John T. and William H. Lightfoot; 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; two daughters-in-law, Laverne and Doris Lightfoot; nieces, one devoted, Anna Oliver; nephew; other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Blvd., where the family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m. After 11 a.m. Thursday, remains will rest in Triumphant Baptist Church, 2003 Lamb Ave., where funeral services will be held at 12 noon. Rev. Delores Seay officiating. Interment Oakwood Cemetery.

MALLORY
Ivan Mallory, 91, of Richmond, passed away April 10, 2001. He was the widower of Jessie Marshall Mallory. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Marshall F. and Kathleen Mallory; grandchildren, Elizabeth Melancon and her husband, Mark, Marshall E. and William E. Mallory; and great-grandson, Timothy Church. He was a member of the Manchester Masonic Lodge No. 14 since 1942. Masonic services will be held 7 p.m. Wednesday, followed by visitation until 8:30 p.m. at the Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. (Rt. 10). Private family interment.

MEADE
Sgt. John C. Meade departed this life April 8, 2001. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna S. Meade and is survived by his children, Michael Meade, Martha Powers, Dana Walker, Donald Schmidt, William Schmidt, Lillian Miles, Karen and Robert; 8 grandchildren; four brothers, Will, James, Robert, and Joe. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, April 13, 2001 at Sunset Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to McGuire Veterans Hospice in memory of John C. Meade.

MONTGOMERY
Donald L. Montgomery, age 67, of Charles City County, died Monday, April 9, 2001. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly D. Montgomery; and his parents, James W. and Alma G. Montgomery. Don was a former sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps, a Chesapeake police officer, and a retired sergeant of the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. He is survived by his daughter, Marjorie M. Marr; his sons and their wives, James W. and Teresa, Davey L., Jeffrey B. and Debbie, and Matthew C. and Vanessa Montgomery; one sister, Juanita Pilley and brother-in-law, J.D. Pilley; a devoted mother-in-law, Mrs. D.C. Stallings; a niece, Beverly Montgomery; grandsons, Jeffrey, Jamie, Michael, Bryant, Chandler and Chadden; and one great-grandson, Steven. His remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, and where funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday. Interment Washington Memorial Park.

MORGAN
MORGAN, ALBERTA Deaconess Alberta M. Morgan, 94, of Mechanicsville and formerly of Richmond, went to her heavenly home in the arms of the angels on April 6, 2001, with her devoted niece at her bedside. She leaves behind two brothers, Deacon Harvey Moran Sr. and Aldolphus Moran Jr.; two sisters, Rosa Roane and Mariah Pleasants; several nieces, among them one devoted, Deaconess Virginia Smith; several nephews, among them one devoted, Harvey Moran Jr.; two sisters-in-law, other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Walter J. Manning Funeral Home, 700 N. 25th St. Remains will lie in state Thursday, 12:30 p.m. at Great Hope Baptist Church, 2101 Venable St., where funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Dr. Earl Bledsoe officiating. Burial Oakwood Cemetery.

PATTERSON
Michael J. Patterson, 52, of Richmond, died suddenly April 10, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Gail Patterson; a daughter, Courtney Patterson; a sister, Maureen Pierce; and a brother, Robert Patterson. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and are being handled by the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home.

PIATT
Edward H. Piatt, age 73, of Columbus, Ohio, formerly of Amelia Co., died April 7, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Piatt of the home; son, James of Columbus; sisters, Mary Sue Perkins (Thomas), Jacksonville, Fla., and Viola P. Tobias of Manassas; brothers, Samuel H. Piatt of Richmond and Horace A. Scott (Mary) of Forestville, Md.; sister-in-law, Lucille Barnes; brother-in-law, Samuel Roberts; nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends. Funeral services Thursday, April 12, 8 p.m., Calvary Tremont Missionary Baptist Church, 1255 Leonard Ave., with burial Friday, Evergreen Cemetery, Columbus, Ohio. Arrangements by C.D. QURESHI
Bushra "Bushi" Qureshi, age 44, of Hanover County, departed this life after a long fight with beast cancer on April 8, 2001. She will be missed by many including her husband, Ahsan Qureshi; daughters, Shanza Qureshi and Risham Qureshi; and son, Bilal Qureshi. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the American Cancer Society, Virginia Chapter.

RAGLAND
Hattie Hamilton Ragland was born October 14, 1915 in South Boston, Va., the daughter of the late Hattie Edith Wilkes Hamilton and Robert Ray Hamilton of that city. Mrs. Ragland departed this life on Saturday, April 7, 2001, at Sentara Nursing Center after a prolonged illness. Mrs. Ragland's early years were spent in Raleigh, N.C., where she graduated from Washington High School. After gravitating to Lawrenceville, Va. with her husband, the late J. Farley Ragland, she earned a B.S. Degree in Elementary Education at St. Paul's College. She was confirmed in St. Paul's Memorial Chapel and served as a member of the Altar Guild. Her Masters Degree was granted from the University of Virginia, where she was inducated into the Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society in Education. All elementary grade levels were taught by Mrs. Ragland as she served as College Supervisor in Elementary Education at St. Paul's College. She also was an exxtension teacher in reading at Virginia State College (University) and was a visiting instructor at Virginia Union University. Despite her struggle with Parkinson's disease, Mrs. Ragland continued her quest for excellence in reading. She began her tenure at the State Department, Richmond, Va., as an Assistant Supervisor of Elementary Education and was soon promoted to the position of Supervisor of Language Arts, becoming the first black to do so at the state level. For a number of years, she singlehandedly held forth for Reading, initiating state conferences for teachers, thus focusing on a new awareness of its importance. Some of her recognized accomplishments were: serving as President of the State Department chapter of the Virginia Education Association; inclusion in Who's Who in Virginia based on professional achievements; production of outstanding script writing for the Governor's Conference on Reading, and appointment to the state selection committee for the 1979 Governor's School for the Gifted. After retiring, Mrs. Ragland relocated to Portsmouth, Va., to join her family members as her health declined. She enjoyed and was a loyal member of the Treble Clef and Book Lovers' Club of Richmond and had served as Grammateus and Basileus of Gamma Lambda Omega Chapter of Allpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Lawrenceville. She was a charter member of the Southside Chapter of Links, Inc. She was preceded in death by two sons, James F. Ragland Jr. and Ray Hamilton Ragland. Survivors include two daughters, Lucia R. Windley, Portsmouth and Irma R. Moore (David) Cleveland, Ohio; sons, Leon C. Ragland, Chesapeake, Va. and Lawrence C. Ragland, New York City; granddaughters, Lauren M. Siggers (Brian), Angela M. Christopher (Michael), Cheryl L. Moore, all of Cleveland, Sonja M. Siler (Eric) of Philadelplhia, Jennifer N. Ragland of Chesapeake, and Lynelle M. Ragland of Chapel Hill, N.C.; grandsons, Redell R. Windley and Marc H. Windley of Portsmouth; seven great-grandchildren, four nieces, two goddaughters, many cousins and friends. Services will be held at St. Paul's Memorial Chapel in Lawrenceville on Thursday, April 12, at 1 p.m., with Father Laughton D. Thomas officiating. Interment will follow in the Rose Garden Cemetery, South Boston. The Links, Inc. and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., respectively, will conduct memorial services at the chapel at 12 noon. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Parkinson's Foundation in her memory. Viewing at Corprew Funeral Home, Portsmouth, Va., will begin at noon Wednesday (today).

ROBERTSON
Robert Lee Robertson, 75, of Chesterfield, went to be with the Lord April 10, 2001. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie M. Robertson and is survived by his children, Rickey Robertson and his wife, Patricia, and Annette Lowry and her husband, Melvin; three grandchildren, Gayle, Rickey Jr. and Travis; one brother, William Robertson; and two sisters, Josephine Robertson and Emma Swearengin. Mr. Robertson was a devoted member of Heritage Baptist Church. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Thursday. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday at Chimney Run Church of the Brethren in Warm Springs, followed by interment in the Robertson Family Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Camp Heritage, c/o Heritage Baptist Church, 7777 Cogbill Rd., Chesterfield, Va. 23832.

ROBINSON
Mary Claire Robinson, Principal of Saint Benedict Catholic Elementary School in Richmond died suddenly on April 9, 2001. She had been Principal of Saint Benedict School since 1982. Previously, she served as Principal of Saint Paul Catholic School. She came to Richmond, Va. in 1980 to join the Diocese of Richmond Catholic School System. Mary Claire was a native of Baltimore, Md. and ministered to the Catholic Church as a Daughter of Charity, Emmitsburg Province, for 22 years. Her zest for life continues to be a part of her Godson, Joshua Chandler Schmidt, and her loving friends, who will always remember Mary Claire as "choosing to dance". Her remains rest at Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where the family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday. A Christian Wake service will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Saint Benedict Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Thursday at Saint Benedict Church. Interment private. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Benedict School Foundation, or the Daughters of Charity, Emmitsburg, Md.

ROSS
Mrs. Mary G. Ross, formerly of N. 32nd St., departed this life Saturday, April 7, 2001. She is survived by one son, Alvin Ross; one daughter, Yvonne Ross; one brother, Alfred Goode; four sisters, Fannie Cooley, Dorothy Lee (Amos), Alice Smith (Herman), Florence Smith; seven grandchildren, Tyree, Courtney, Sanchez, DeShon, Ernest, Ashley and Matthew; a host of nieces, nephews; great-nieces and nephews, among them devoted, Lillian Goode and Marcia Goode; other relatives and friends, one devoted, Fannie Spencer. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Sts., where funeral services will be held Thursday, April 12, 11 a.m., Rev. Jesse Gatling officiating. Interment Maury Cemetery. Relatives and friends attending funeral services, assemble at the funeral home 10:30 a.m.

SMITH
Linda Newcomb Smith, age 42, of 7901-168 Boydton Plank Rd., Petersburg, Va., entered into eternal rest April 9, 2001, at MCV. Surviving are her husband, Anthony Dean Smith; three children, Christopher Smith of Richmond, Rodney Smith of Petersburg, Tosha Wieland of Portsmouth; two sisters, Elizabeth Wilkins of Petersburg, Kathryn Monday of Richmond; one brother, Clarence Newcomb of North Carolina; seven grandchildren, Justin, Taylor, Tabitha, Krysta, Zachery, Alexis and Dustin. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Browning Funeral Home, with interment in Ash Camp Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday.
