James R. Hairston
James Ralph Hairston, 86, of 600 Chestnut Knob Road in Martinsville, died Monday, Oct. 24, 2005, at Blue Ridge Rehab Center.
He was born April 13, 1919 in Henry County to Sam D. Hairston and Daisy Stone Hairston. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Thomas Hairston and James R. Hairston; and one daughter, Barbara J. Hairston.
He was a life long resident of Martinsville and had been retired from Bassett-Walker Furniture for 15 years.
Surviving are his wife, Janie H. Hairston of Martinsville; two sons, Lewis A. Hairston of Ridgeway and Jerome Hairston of Martinsville; three daughters, Deborah Miller, Sallie Roberts and Amanda Dorsey, all of Martinsville.
The funeral will be held at 11:30 a.m. at Mountain View Baptist church, with Dr. C. L. Johnson officiating. Burial will be at Hairston family cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church Monday for half an hour before the funeral and will be at the home of daughter Sallie Roberts at other times.
Hines Funeral Services is in charge of arrangements.

Alvis E. Largen
Alvis Eugene Largen, 73, of Naples, Fla., formerly of Martinsville, died Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2005, at the Veterans Hospital in Tampa, Fla.
He was born in Henry County on May 18, 1932, to Elmer Largen and Elizabeth Carter Largen. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Robin Gayle Largen.
He served in the Navy in the Korean Conflict, and he was self-employed in telephone construction. He was a former Mason and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Nell Harrison Largen of the home; a son, Ronnie Eugene Largen of Fort Myers, Fla.; and three grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Franklin Memorial Park in Rocky Mount. The Rev. J.D. Harmon will officiate.
Arrangements are by McKee-Stone Funeral Services, Martinsville.

Margaret W. Minter
Margaret Wells Minter, 57, of 9501 Chatham Road, Axton, died Thursday, Oct. 27, 2005, at her home.
Norris Funeral Services and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

Carla Surber
Carla Surber, 43, of Henry, died Thursday, Oct. 27, 2005, at Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital in Rocky Mount.
Bassett Funeral Service in Bassett is in charge of arrangements.

Margaret B. Bowyer
Margaret Betty Bowyer, 60, of Martinsville, died Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2005, at Blue Ridge Rehab Center.
Arrangements will be announced by McKee-Stone Funeral Services.

Carolyn Cobbler
Carolyn Cobbler, 58, of the Virginia-Carolina Road in Spencer, died Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2005, at R.J. Reynolds Patrick Memorial Hospital in Stuart.
Moody Funeral Home in Stuart is in charge of arrangements.

Bunnie L. Cockram
The funeral for Bunnie Lawrence Cockram, 95, of Meadows of Dan, who died Oct. 31, 2005, was held Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2005, at Mountain View United Methodist Church. Bill Banks and James Houchins officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.
military rites were provided by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard.
Pallbearers were Leon Conner, Ricky Conner, David Conner, Darrell Conner, Tony Helms and Donnie Spradlie.

Ernest Compton
The funeral for Ernest Compton, 87, of Ridgeway, who died Oct. 30, 2005, was held Wednesday at Community Funeral Services chapel with the Rev. Bob Ford officiating. Burial was in Mountain View Cemetery in Ridgeway.
Pallbearers were Joseph Compton, Lucas Pryor, Winfred Compton, Noel Blankenship, William Perry Jr. and Denzil Carter.

Jewell C. Conner
A funeral for Jewell Cochran Conner, of Meadows of Dan, was held Wednesday at Howell Funeral Home chapel with Minister Terry Martin and Ed Clarkson officiating. Burial was in Mountain View United Methodist Church Cemetery in Meadows of Dan.
Pallbearers were Paul Belcher, Gene Webb, Tommy Barnard, Jeff Conner, Otis Puckett, Chuck Cochran, Phil Barnard and Steve Smith.

Jesse W. Dollyhigh
Jesse Willie Dollyhigh, 95, of 4280 Longview Drive, Fieldale, died Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2005, at Salem Health and Rehab in Salem.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Collins Funeral Services in Bassett.

Franklin D. Nickelston
Franklin D. "Frank" Nickelston, 72, of 4160 Oak Level Road, Bassett, died Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2005, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville.
He was born on May 14, 1933, in Price, N.C., to Herbert C. Nickelston and Cora Stovall Nickelston. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Nellie Hopkins; and a brother, John D. "Dink" Nickelston.
An Army veteran, Nickelston was stationed in Germany during the Korean Conflict. He was a truck driver for 38 years and retired from American Standard Homes with 27 years of service. He was a member of Fort Trial Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Joy Lee Prillaman Nickelston of the home; a daughter, Susan N. Johnson of Bassett; two sisters, Geneva N. Biggs and Eldean N. Atkins, both of Martinsville; three brothers, Rev. Jimmy L. Nickelston of Burlington, N.C., and Bobby J. Nickelston and Paul J. Nickelston, both of Martinsville; and one granddaughter.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Collins Funeral chapel with Dr. Joey McNeill and the Rev. Jim Alsop officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at Collins Funeral Services for one hour before the service Thursday.
Memorials may be made to Fort Trial Baptist Church Building Fund, 170 Oak Level Road, Stanleytown, Va. 24168.

Piedad V. Pierdant
A funeral for Piedad V. Pierdant, 80, of Chester, was held Nov. 1, 2005 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Colonial Heights. Burial was at Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Chester.
Pallbearers were Charlie Phelps, Charles Michael Phelps, Ryan Pierce, Alton Allsbrook, Lee Clark and Gerarado Lopez.
Arrangements were by Norris Funeral Services and Crematory in Martinsville.
