Betty M. Rice, 80, of Midlothian, died Saturday, May 26, 2001. She is survived by her husband, Thomas J. Rice Jr.; son and daughter-in-law, Thomas J. Rice III and Linda B. Rice; three grandchildren, Katheryn A. Rice, T. Johnathan Rice and Michael B. Rice. Mrs. Rice was a member of Winfree Memorial Baptist Church and a retired Midlothian High School Teacher. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Rd. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, 2001 at Winfree Memorial Baptist Church. Interment Hollywood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Martha Larus Rice Fund at Winfree Memorial Baptist Church or the American Cancer Society.

SHELTON
Departed this life May 24, 2001, John Henry "Toby" Shelton. He is survived by his children, Randy Tunkett, Sandy Shelton, Solomon Anderson, Charles "C.J." Harvey; his loving mother, Shirley Mae Smith; maternal grandmother, Emma Lou Shelton; and sisters and brothers, Diane Talley (Edward), Miriam Bey, Shelia James (Thomas), Leo Smith Jr., Larry Smith, James Heath and Naresha Turner; stepmother, Patience Brooks Loftin; stepbrothers and sisters, Alfreda Moore (Harold), Charles T. Brooks (Bertha), Ricky Brooks (Patricia), Rudolph Brooks (Cindy) and Felix Brooks III; a host of aunts, uncles, other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Chiles Funeral Home, 2100 Fairmount Ave. where family will receive friends Monday (tonight) 4 to 5 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, 2 p.m. from Philipi Baptist Church (Mineral). Rev. Temple Anderson officiating. Interment Brooks Family Cemetery. Remains will rest in church one hour prior to service.

SMITH-MOTT
Valerie Smith-Mott, 49, of Richmond, entered into eternal rest suddenly on Wednesday, May 23, 2001. She was the loving daughter of Sylvester and Rosetta Smith of Philadelphia, Pa. Also cherishing her memory are five children, Shawn Madison of Great Lakes, Ill., Raquel and Jamarr Smith of Philadelphia, Coppie and Ashley Mott of Richmond; a sister, Trinia Smith-Fields of Virginia Beach; two brothers, Carlton and Rodney Smith of Philadelphia; 11 grandchildren, five nieces, two nephews, a host of cousins; a brother-in-law, Robert Fields; a son-in-law, Donald Madison; two devoted friends, Judy Turner and Camilla Curry; and a host of aunts and uncles. Services will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 815 E. Grace St., on Wednesday, May 30, 2001 at 11 a.m., the Rev. Robert G. Hetherington officiating. The family requests in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Coppie and Ashley Mott. The family will receive friends 2 to 9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave.

Phillip P. Woodson Jr., P.H.D. of Upper Montclair, N.J., died suddenly on May 24, 2001. Beloved husband of 17 years of Christina McCathie Woodson; devoted father of Rachael, Alice, Aaron and David Woodson; beloved son of Phillip P. Sr. and Dorothy Hawthorne Woodson; dear brother of Kathie Woodson Cavendish. John Artis Sr., 71, of Richmond, departed this life Friday, January 19, 2001 at Johnston Willis Hospital. He is survived by his devoted wife, Effie Artis; three sons, Rodney, Ronald, and John D.; two stepdaughters, one stepson; one sister, Hazel Rouse; one brother, Luby Artis Jr.; one aunt, one daughter-in-law, father and mother-in-law, four brothers-in-law, three sisters-in-law, ten grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; a devoted friend, Nurse Rebecca West; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Sts., where the family will receive friends Tuesday (today), 6 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 24, 1 p.m. at Beulah Baptist Church, 2305 Concorde Ave. Pastor H. R. Carter Jr., officiating. Interment in Maury Cemetery. After 12 noon, remains will rest in the above named church. BOYKIN
Sally Peele Boykin, 87, of Richmond, died January 20, 2001. Survivors include three sons, Billy E. Boykin Sr. and his wife, Frances, John W. Boykin Jr. and his wife, Linda and Rocky L. Boykin; one brother, David L. Peele and his wife, Louise; seven grandchildren, Billy Jr., Denise, Scott, Chris, Jill, Gary and Kim; and four great-grandchildren. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull St. Rd., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, and where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday. Interment Westhampton Memorial Park.

BRANDON
Lacy Paulette "Pat" Brandon, of Victoria, died Sunday, January 21, 2001. He was the son of the late Warner Dodson Brandon and Hattie Paulette Brandon. He was born November 29, 1923 in Charlotte County. Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Doris C. Brandon; one son and daughter-in-law, Phil and Debbie Brandon of Victoria; granddaughters, Bonnie and husband, T. Jones of South Hill, Lori and husband, Vince Callis of Kenbridge; great-grandchildren, Brandon Jones and Riley Jones of South Hill, Va.; two brothers, Stuart D. Brandon of Lynchburg, Va. and Curtis Brandon of New Bern, N.C. Mr.Brandon was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church and a retired foreman with Barnes Manufacturing Co. The family will receive friends at the Browning Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Browning Funeral Home with interment in Lake View Cemetery, Victoria, Va.

CARNEY
Lucy Martin Carney of Richmond, age 91, died Sunday, January 21, 2001. She was born in Unionville, Va., a graduate of Orange County High School and Smithdeal Business College. She was a longtime executive secretary for the Boys Club of Richmond, Va., and was associated with the Boys Club in Huntington, W.Va. She was a member of Christ Ascension Church, the Montpelier Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the House of Burgesses Chapter of the Colonial Dames. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur Peyton Carney Jr.; two sisters, Mozelle M. Pope and Rebecca M. Miller; one brother, Howard K. Martin. She is survived by her daughter, Beverley C. Taylor and her husband, Brad; her son, Wilbur Peyton Carney III and his wife, Kristi; four grandchildren, Christopher M. Peoples, Sarah M. Trimble, Maryann B. Carney and Matthew P. Carney; two great-granddaughters, Allison and Julia Peoples; her sister, Katherine M. Dawson; brother, William J. Martin; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave., on Tuesday, January 23, from 6 to 8 p.m. Graveside services will be held in Forest Lawn Cemetery on Wednesday, 11 a.m.

Ronald Lee Cheatham, of Richmond, departed this life Friday, January 19, 2001 in McGuire Veterans Hospital. He is survived by his son, Stanley Jackson (Sheila); two grandsons; a devoted mother, Marion Cheatham; three devoted brothers, Michael D., Larry (Cathy) and Stanley (Elnora) Cheatham; a devoted sister, Shirley C. Anderson; five aunts, one uncle; one sister-in-law, Carrie W. Cheatham; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Sts., where funeral services will be held Wednesday,Janaury 24, 12 p.m. Rev. Richard Bailey officiating. Interment in Virginia Veterans Cemetery, Amelia Co., Va. Relatives and friends attending funeral services assemble at the funeral home Tuesday, 11:30 a.m.

Mr. Bryant Mallory Clarke, age 81, of Lawrenceville, Va. died January 22, 2001 at his residence. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Taylor Clarke; three children, Kenneth M. Clarke and wife, Ellen, Carlton T. Clarke and wife, Lynn, all of Lawrenceville, and Jerry C. Chaney of Kenbridge; two brothers, L.C. Clarke of Emporia and Elbert R. Clarke of Waynesboro; six grandchildren, Kelly Pernell, C. Taylor Clarke and wife, Jodie, W. Lee Chaney III and wife, Mary Kathryn, B. Mallory Clarke II, Tori Clarke and Fiancee, Kendall Morris, and Tiffany Clarke; three great-grandchildren, Ashby, William, and Bryant. Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Wednesday at Matthews Chapel United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends at the residence, 297 Clarke Farm Road. Halcie E. Cook, 82, of Powhatan formerly of Richmond, died January 22, 2001. She is survived by one daughter, Naomi C. Mc-Cray of Chesterfield; two sons, Keith Franklin Cook of Chesterfield and Gary Michael Cook of Richmond; eight grandchildren and one great-grandson. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Hwy., Powhatan. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Westover Hills United Methodist Church. Interment Maury Cemetery.

DUNNAVANT
L.M. "Tubby" Dunnavant, 73, of Richmond, passed away January 22, 2001. He was preceded in death by his wives, Dottie Hall Dunnavant and Mildred F. Dunnavant. Survivors include his daughter, Virginia D. Cannon and her husband, Charles of Richmond; stepdaughter, Sandra Parten of Apopka, Fla.; a brother, L.C. Dunnavant of Charlotte Court House, Va.; five sisters, Mae Sizemore of Farmville, Minnie D. Pridgen of Richmond, Frances D. Wilmouth and Betty D. Cook, both of Burkeville, and Helen D. Matthews of Midlothian; and numerous devoted nieces and nephews. Mr. Dunnavant was a longtime member and deacon of Weatherford Memorial Baptist Church. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull St. Rd., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, and where funeral services will be held 12:30 p.m. Wednesday. Interment Westhampton Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Weatherford Memorial Baptist Church.

EDDLETON
Henry Lee Eddleton Sr., 81 years old, passed away at his Glen Allen home Monday, January 22, 2001, after a short illness. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Lillian S. Eddleton; his sons, Henry Lee Eddleton Jr. and his wife, Janet S. Eddleton, and William L. Eddleton and his wife, Sue S. Eddleton; his daughters, Sondra E. Clayton and her husband, Thomas C. Clayton, and Donna E. Chandler and her husband, Dalton B. Chandler; his grandchildren, Heather, Melissa and Michael Eddleton, Steve Clayton, Karen C. Beazley, Doni Clayton, Billy Eddleton, Jennifer and Shannon Layne, and Brett and Blake Chandler; his great-grandchildren, Cliff and Kara Beazley, and Faith Layne; his brother, Nelson Eddleton; and sister, Viola Duke. Mr. Eddleton was a WWII veteran and retired after 41 years with the RF&P Railroad. He was a longtime member of Biltmore Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Bon Secours Hospice, 8580 Magellan Pkwy., Building 4, Richmond, Va. 23227 in memory of Henry Eddleton. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., where the family will receive friends Tuesday (today ) 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., and where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday. FARROW
Verle Farrow, age 84, of Boydton, Va., passed away on Sunday, January 21, 2001, in Community Memorial Healthcenter, South Hill, Va. Mr. Farrow was a native of Blue Ridge, Ind., and earned a bachelor's degree, cum laude, in civil engineering from Purdue University. He held several engineering positions prior to joining the US Army Corps of Engineers where he retired in 1972 as chief of the Hydrology and Hydraulics Design Branch in the Office, Chief of Engineers, Washington, D.C., after 31 years of service. Mr. Farrow was a veteran of WWII, serving in the Field Artillery, Sanitary Corps and Corps of Engineers, and was discharged with the rank of captain. Throughout his adult life he was an avid bird dog breeder, trainer, field trial judge, and frequent contributor to "The American Field" magazine reporting on dog trials throughout the Eastern United States. He was also active in numerous field trial organizations and served in several elected positions in national and regional dog clubs, and was elected to the Field Trial Hall of Fame in 1977. Additionally, he enjoyed Tennessee Walking horses. In 1979 Mr. and Mrs. Farrow moved from Northern Virginia to Boydton, Va., where Mr. Farrow served two terms on the Boydton Town Council. He is survived by his wife, Idaliah Lee Henson Farrow; two children, Patricia Fisher of Charlottesville, Va., and Michael Farrow of Burke, Va.; two grandchildren, Zachary Thomas Fisher and Sarah Tinsley Fisher of Charlottesville; and one sister, Virginia Willey of Manilla, Ind. Burial services will be private. The family asks that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to the Boydton Life Station, Boydton, Va. 23917. Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

GARNETT
Ophelia Garnett, 79, of Richmond, formerly of Seattle, Wash., died Saturday, January 20, 2001, after a long illness. She is survived by two daughters, Ms. Micki Offutt of Richmond and Mrs. Donna Crook of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a son, Gary Garnett of Oakland, Calif.; three grandchildren, Tamara Offutt, Scott Cooper and Shane Garnett. Memorial services will be held on Thursday, January 25, at 1 p.m. at Gayton Baptist Church, 13501 N. Gayton Rd. Memorial donations may be made to Bon Secours Hospice.

GREEN
Alma M. Green, 70, of Ashland, passed away January 21, 2001. She is survived by her husband, Charles R. Green; five children, Carol Herring, Diann MacKenzie, Shelia Nelson, James Goff and John Goff; eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Alene Imes and Nancy Lamie; one sister-in-law, Nancy Shortt; and a host of other family and friends. A private graveside service will be held at Signal Hill Memorial Park.

HORNE
Elizabeth Naoma Horne died Monday, January 22, 2001. She is survived by two daughters; one son, six grandchildren, five brothers, two sisters, and numerous other relatives. A graveside service will be held today, Tuesday, January 23, 2001 at Westhampton Memorial Park in Richmond. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Lung Association of Virginia, 9221 Forest Hill Ave., Richmond, Va. 23235. The West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 West Broad St., Glen Allen, is in charge of arrangements.
