James Fendall Parkinson III
Oct 29, 2002
Real estate lawyer James Fendall Parkinson III loved being with his three girls. He was "content not to be out with the guys or playing golf on the weekends. He wanted to be with his children," said his law school friend John W. Luxton.
Mr. Parkinson died Saturday in Richmond. He was 54.
"He was a great dad," said Artie McGurn, his brother-in-law. "You could almost set your clock by him. He'd get home by 5:30 or quarter to six, eat dinner with the family and help with homework or go to his children's activities.
"He had a pretty good knack for helping people.
"I don't know if being born on the fourth of July had anything to do with it, but he was very patriotic. He loved life and where he was. He loved Hampden-Sydney, he loved Virginia and Richmond and where he lived."
After graduating from Hampden-Sydney College and the University of Richmond's T.C. Williams Law School, he practiced in the Richmond area from 1973 until he died. Much of his practice was residential closings referred to him by real estate agents, Luxton said.
For about eight years, he was an assistant commonwealth's attorney in Chesterfield County and then worked with a group of lawyers before going solo in the 1990s.
The Richmond Legal Aid Society had recognized him for his pro bono work.
He was a member of the Richmond Bar Association, the Virginia State Bar and the Country Club of Virginia.
Survivors include his wife, Katrina McGurn Parkinson; three daughters, Catherine Clare Parkinson, Frances Fendall Parkinson and Margaret McGurn Parkinson, all of Richmond; his mother, France Williams Parkinson of Henrico County; and a sister, Ann Rice of Hampton.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at St. Bridget's Catholic Church, 6006 Three Chopt Road, where he was a member.

Dorothy Hill Hudgins
Nov 07, 2001
Dorothy Hill Hudgins "loved working for the impoverished people of Richmond. She loved making their lives more bearable. She'd go out of her way to do for anyone," a co-worker said.
"In the community she lived in, she looked out after the other residents, made sure they were OK. She liked making other peoples' lives happier," said the co-worker, who asked that her name not be used.
Mrs. Hudgins, retired executive director of the Richmond Community Action Program, the city's official anti-poverty agency, died Sunday in a local hospital.
She was 71 and lived in Richmond.
Mrs. Hudgins joined RCAP in 1967, two years after its inception, and served as administrative assistant to the executive director.
After a stint as deputy director, she was named executive director in 1986 and served until her retirement in 1996.
Under her leadership, the Child Health Initiative Program, the Food Buyers Club and Project Discovery, a program that enabled inner city youth to pursue a college education, were started.
Her administration presided over RCAP's move from 900 James St. to its location at 1021 N. 17th St.
Mrs. Hudgins was a member of the Virginia Council Against Poverty before her retirement.
At the time of her death, she was a director of Virginia CARES, a statewide service program for ex-offenders.
A Richmond native, she graduated from Armstrong High School and attended J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College, Virginia Union University and Virginia Commonwealth University.
She was a longtime member of Mount Olivet Baptist Church and a member of the Daughters of Isis, the Golden Circle and Heroines of Jericho.
A funeral will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Mount Olivet Baptist Church, 25th and S streets. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
