Nick Prokopis
Nov 18, 2002
A funeral for local restaurateur Nick Prokopis will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral. Burial will be in Westhampton Memorial Park.
The proprietor of Nick's Cafeteria in the former Ross Building and Nick's 707 in the Eighth and Main Building died Thursday. Mr. Prokopis, 75, was diagnosed with cancer two years ago.
He was the son of a restaurant owner, and there was a point in time when he, one of his two brothers and all four of his sisters owned separate restaurants in Richmond.
Mr. Prokopis, a longtime member and former parish council president at Sts. Constantine and Helen, was one of the "restaurant people" who offered culinary services in the early days of the cathedral's popular Greek Festival.
"We all had our businesses to run at that time, but after we closed our restaurants, we would trek back up to the church and put our aprons back on to cook for the festival," said his sister Becky Lambrinides, of Richmond.
He got his start as a teenager working with his father in a Marshall Street eatery called Johnnie's.
After serving in the Army during the Korean War, the John Marshall High School graduate opened Millie's Grill at First and Main streets.
The restaurant was named after his wife, Millie Prokopis, who worked beside him at all of the family businesses. She died in 1981.
He sold Millie's Grill in 1960, and after a few years managing Tom Ross's Charcoal Hearth, a steakhouse on Brook Road, he returned downtown.
When the Ross Building at 801 E. Main St. was completed in the mid-1960s, he opened Nick's Cafeteria on the second floor. The Ross Building is now known as WyteStone Plaza. About a decade later came Nick's 707, a smaller establishment in the Eighth and Main Building, at 707 E. Main St.
Mr. Prokopis ran both restaurants until his 1993 retirement, but that retirement didn't last long, his family said. Shortly before he was diagnosed with cancer, Mr. Prokopis was offered a part-time job as a security guard at Westbury Pharmacy. After his diagnosis, he decided to resume working.
"It was a blessing the way the job just sort of fell into his lap," said his daughter Georgia Kiraly, of Richmond.
"He thrived on being around people. That was the nature of his business all his life."
In addition to his sister and daughter, survivors include two other daughters, Connie Barnes, of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Stephanie Prokopis, of Richmond; a son, Jay Prokopis, of Richmond; a brother, John Prokopis, of Glen Allen; three other sisters, Mary Toulantis, Love Velitjelos and Virginia Vanias, all of Richmond; and two grandchildren.
