ANCARROW
Ruby Packett Ancarrow, 87, died January 25, 2001 at Hospice of Central Virginia. Mrs. Ancarrow was born in Warsaw, Virginia and had been a resident of Richmond since 1931. She was a graduate of the School of Nursing at Johnston-Willis Hospital, and she also had a career in real estate. She was a charter member of River Road Church - Baptist, and a member of Warsaw Baptist Church. She was also active in the Florence Nightingale Circle of Sheltering Arms Hospital, the Tuckahoe Woman's Club, the Commonwealth Woman's Club and two sewing circles. Preceded in death by her husband, John E. Ancarrow, she is survived by two sons, John E. Ancarrow and his wife, Kaaren, of Carrollton, Virginia, Frank R. Ancarrow and his wife, Carolyn, of Seaford, Virginia; and a daughter, Margaret Reamy Ancarrow and her husband, Michael A. Forscey, of Washington, D.C.; six grandchildren, one great-grandchild, several nieces, nephews and cousins and a host of devoted friends. The family will receive friends from 2 to 5 and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Sunday at Woody Funeral Home, Parham Road. A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, January 29 at River Road Church with burial in Warsaw Baptist Church Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to River Road Church, Warsaw Baptist Church or the American Hospice Foundation.

ANDREWS
Blanche Walker Andrews, 76, of Richmond, formerly of Rocky Mount, N.C., passed away January 26, 2001. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry W. Andrews Jr.; and her brother, Billy Walker. She is survived by four daughters, Mary Robin Andrews, Martha Andrews Ballinger, Margaret Andrews Avery and her husband, Jim, and Amy Andrews Cobb and her husband, Freddy; one sister, Ruby Walker Bradley; eight grandchildren, Walker, Wesley and Amelia Ballinger, Carter and Jeffrey Avery, Jordan, Andrew and Grayson Cobb. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., where the family will receive friends 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday, with a funeral service to follow. Interment will take place at Greenwood Memorial Gardens immediately following the funeral. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Virginia Home.

BETHEL
Douglas Erskine Bethel died January 26, 2001 at the age of 82. He was born April 10, 1918 in South Richmond, Va. and was a bona fide Dogtowner. He graduated from the old John Marshall High School in 1936, enrolled in Randolph Macon College in Ashland, Va. in 1940, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree. In 1938, he enlisted in the H Company of the Richmond Grays Infantry of the Virginia National Guard. He transferred to the Army Air Corps Flying Cadets and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant, Class of 41-G from Craig Field, Alabama. He served as a pilot in the 7th Air Force in the Pacific Theatre during WWII. Later, he was assigned to the Air Evacuation Units and to Operational Training Units of the Air Transport Command as a specialized flight instructor. He flew across the United States, over the Caribbean and in the European Theatre. He qualified as a "Short Snorter" in 1942, flying over many Pacific Islands, crossing the International Dateline with flights from Hawaii to the New Hebrides, across the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic to France, returning via Newfoundland and Canada. His "Short Snorter Bills" were given to the Virginia Aeronautical Historical Society for display at Byrd Field. He was awarded, among others the Meritorious Service Award with Battle Stars, the American Defense and Victory Medals, and the Asiatic-Pacific Medals. He was released from active duty in 1945 from the McGuire Army Hospital and was discharged from the active Air Force Reserve in 1958 with the rank of Major. He began his career in real estate in 1948 as a salesman with Morton G. Thalhimer, Inc. In the fifties, he served as secretary-treasurer of Wyatt-Cornick, Inc. He then joined H.T. Richardson & Co. Realtors. In 1962, he opened his own firm, Douglas E. Bethel, Realtor, specializing in land sales to developers, businesses and investors as well as providing appraisal and consulting services. In 1960, he received the coveted Adrian L. Bendheim, Jr. award as the outstanding salesman given by the Richmond Board of Realtors and later served on its Board of Directors. He initiated the idea of continued education for licensed salesmen and brokers. He was a member of the Virginia and National Association of Realtors. He served as President of the Bon Air Southampton Optimist Club and the Stratford Hills Cotillion. He was a member of the VFW, the American Legion and the International Club. He is survived by his wife of fifty years, Jane Wyatt Bethel; three children, D. Wyatt Bethel, Esq. and his wife, Patricia of Clifton, Va., Jane B. Powell Harvey and her husband, Steven of Centerville, Va. and Gwendolyn Bethel Wilcox and her husband, Daniel of Elkridge, Md. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Ashleigh and Meredith Bethel, Amelie and Justin Powell and Andrew and Brian Wilcox. The family will receive friends 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Rd., Midlothian. A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at Maury Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Douglas E. Bethel Scholarship Fund, Randolph Macon College, P.O. Box 5005, Ashland, Va. 23005 or The American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 429, Richmond, Va. 23218-0929.

BISHOP
Gerald Taylor Bishop, of Bumpass, Va., went to be with Jesus on January 27, 2001. He was a self-employed painter and founder of the Bumpass Painting Company. Jerry was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. He is survived by Susan Owen, his companion of 22 years; his mother, Mrs. Roy P. Bishop Jr.; his brother, Roy P. Bishop III; and one niece, Alyssa Bishop. A memorial service will be conducted at the West Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 West Broad Street Road, Wednesday, January 31 at 11 a.m.

BLUMBERG
Elizabeth Silver Blumberg, 84, of Richmond, Va., formerly of Savannah, Ga., died January 27, 2001. She was preceded in death by her husband, Larry N. Blumberg; and her son, Brian F. Blumberg. She is survived by her daughter and her husband, Susan B. and Milan E. Hapala Jr.; her son and his wife, Stephen R. and Nancy M. Blumberg; two granddaughters, Leigh Hapala of Richmond and Lauren Blumberg and one grandson, Sam Blumberg, both of Massachusetts. Mrs. Blumberg was owner and operator of Advanced Refrigeration and Furniture Co. in Savannah, Ga. She was beloved by her family, friends and customers. Funeral services and interment will be held in Savannah, Ga. on Monday, January 29. Memorial contributions may be made to the Westminster-Canterbury Fellowship Fund.

BOK
Marie-Louise Charlotte Bok, known to friends and family as Marlise or Bea, died Friday, January 19, 2001 after a brief illness. She was the daughter of the late Jan Bok and Dagmar Heansel-Bok of Estonia. Miss Bok came to the United States in the late 1930s with a Dutch ballet troup and the following year was unable to return home due to the war. She remained in the United States, became a United States citizen, and settled in the Richmond area. A German teacher at the Douglas S. Freeman High School from 1954 thru 1978, Miss Bok also taught drama and sponsored award-winning productions with the Drama Club. She taught ballet and chaperoned many young Richmond women on their first "Grand Tours" of Europe. Miss Bok is survived by her sister, Oda Bok; three nephews, Henk Bok and family, Edward Bok and family, Frank Bok and family, all of Holland; another nephew, Kees Bok and family of Argentina. Other survivors include members of Miss Bok's two adopted families, the Robert Hathaways and Mrs. Louis Guerrant Fields, all of Richmond. A memorial service will be held Friday, February 2, 2001, at 2 p.m. in the Westminster-Canterbury Chapel, 1600 Westbrook Ave. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Second Presbyterian Church, 5 N. 5th St., Richmond, Va. 23219 or a favorite charity.

BONDURANT
Thomas O. Bondurant Sr., age 76, died January 27, 2001 at his residence. Survived by his wife, Mrs. Lillian E. Bondurant of Rice; two sons, Thomas O. Jr. and wife, Christie Bondurant of Richmond and Benjamin Elliott and wife, Laurie Bondurant of West Point, Va.; one sister, Mrs. Mary B. Stevens of Rice; four grandchildren, Leigh and Ginnie Bondurant, Richmond, Taylor and Cabell Bondurant, West Point. The family will be receiving friends at his late residence. Funeral services 11 a.m. Monday at the Farmville United Methodist Church. Interment Westview Cemetery. Remembrances may be made to the Farmville United Methodist Church or the Prince Edward Volunteer Rescue Squad. Doyne-Burger-Davis Funeral Home in charge.

BRAY
Katherine E. Bray, died Friday, January 26, 2001, widow of Andrew S. Bray. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Elaine B. and Earl Kelley; two sisters, Geraldine Burton of Gloucester, Va., and Lois M. Clark of Dania, Fla.; two brothers, Roy L. Farmer Jr. of Mathews, Va., and Carl M. Farmer of Newport News, Va.; two grandchildren, Kenneth A. Kelley and Laura K. Kelley. Remains rest at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 W. Broad St. Rd., where services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday. Interment Westhampton Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

BROOKS
Whirley Lee (Monkey) Brooks Jr., of 610 Starview Lane was peacefully called to glory on Wednesday, January 24, 2001. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Sylvia Branch Brooks; a daughter, Sylvia Brooks Jefferson; a son, Whirley Lee Brooks III; five grandchildren, Tiffany J. Lewis, NiToya Jefferson, April, Alicia, and Andrea Brooks, one great-grandchild, Darron "DJ" Lewis Jr.; three brothers, four sisters, four sisters-in-law; devoted, Nancy B. Mashore; seven brothers-in-law, three aunts, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Mr. Brooks retired from Ivey an Ivey Shell Station with 45 years of service. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Sts. Funeral services will be held Monday, January 29, 1 p.m. at First Union Baptist Church, 6144 Derwent Rd. Rev. Horace Wade Jr., pastor, officiating. Interment in Maury Cemetery. After 12 p.m. Monday, remains will rest in the above named church until hour of service. Relatives and friends attending funeral services assemble at the church, Monday, 12:30 p.m.

CAKNIPE
James L. Caknipe, age 76, of Chase City, died January 26, 2001. He was a WWII Navy veteran, a member of D.A.V., American Legion Post 43 and VFW Post 8228. He was preceded in death by a son, Justin W. Caknipe, and is survived by his wife of 42 years, Mildred Wilson Caknipe; daughters and sons-in-law, Jean and Edward Robinette, Chase City; Catherine and Wallace Bowen, Clarksville; sons and daughters-in-law, James L. Jr. and Peggy Caknipe, Timothy and Sarah Caknipe, Chase City; grandchildren, Kevin, Brian and Stacy Robinette, Melissa and Brandie Ferrell, Jamie and Jessica Caknipe; great-grandchildren, Erica, Seth and Kayla Robinette. Friends may call at Wood Funeral Service 7 to 8:30 p.m. tonight. Graveside funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Woodland Cemetery with the Rev. Kevin Eley officiating, and military honors by American Legion Post 43. Memorials may be directed to a charity of your choice.

CAMPBELL
Jeanne Begien Campbell, 87, died January 26, 2001. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jewett Campbell. She is survived by her daughter, Constance Campbell; and her granddaughter, Shelley Campbell. She taught art at the University of Richmond for 40 years. Memorial service will be at St. James Episcopal Church, Franklin St., Monday, January 29 at 2 p.m.

CAUDLE
Steven Scott Caudle (Steve), 43, of Varina, was taken from us suddenly Friday, January 26, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Susan T. Caudle; his daughters, Kristen and Jamie; his mother, Sande Caudle; one sister, Penny Caudle; his mother and father-in-law, James and Irma Tunstall; and a host of loyal friends. Steve served with the Henrico Division of Police for 21 years and will be missed by all. He also served his country in the U.S. Army. He was a proud southern gentleman and Civil War historian. Steve was a devoted husband and daddy, lived everyday to its fullest and was deeply loved by all. He rests at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends Sunday, 2 to 4 p.m. and Monday, 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at Four Mile Creek Baptist Church. Interment Washington Memorial Park. Memorial donations may be made to Central Virginia Battlefield Trust, 604A William Street, Suite 1, Fredericksburg, Va. 22401.

COPELAND
Departed this life January 25, 2001, Howard S. Copeland of Manakin-Sabot. He is survived by his devoted wife, Taras Copeland; children, Braxton and Tessa; father, Howard Copeland (Carrie) of Baltimore, Md.; stepfather, Walter Turner; five sisters, Frances, Priscilla, Jennifer, Agatha and Thedora; brother, Melvin; devoted aunt, Mrs. Genevieve Fields; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Chiles Funeral Home, 2100 Fairmount Ave. Funeral services will be held on Monday 12 noon from First Baptist Church, Manakin-Sabot, with Rev. E.B. Conley officiating. Interment Roselawn Memory Gardens. Remains will rest in church one hour prior to service.

CROTTS
Travis T. Crotts, 88, of Richmond, passed away Friday, January 26, 2001. He was predeceased by his wife, Margaret R. Crotts; and a sister, Mabel C. Poole. Mr. Crotts is survived by a brother and his wife, Gilbert E. and Helen Crotts of Thomasville, N.C.; a niece and her husband, Martha and Steve Yokeley of Thomasville, N.C.; two nephews, Dr. Ronald Poole of Raleigh, N.C., and G. Lamar Poole of Thomasville, N.C. Mr. Crotts was a member of First Baptist Church, the Theodore Adams Sunday School Class and the ACCA Temple Shrine. Remains rest at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave., where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday. A service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at the gravesite in Claremont Cemetery, Claremont, Va. Jessie Gresham Pollard Dodge, 91, of Lancaster Co., Va., died on Saturday, January 27, 2001. She was born December 18, 1909 in Richmond. She was the daughter of Henry R. Pollard Jr. and Julia Williams Pollard. She graduated from Collegiate School and Hollins College. Beside her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence C. Dodge; her sister, Julia C. Pollard; and two brothers, Albert W. Pollard and Henry R. (Speaker) Pollard III. She is survived by three nieces, Julia Bruce P. Beverley, Lucille P. (Bobbie) Wrenn and her husband, Robert B. Wrenn, and Florence T. Goode and her husband, William B. Goode III; two nephews, Henry R. Pollard IV and his wife, Julia W. Pollard and William N. Pollard and his wife, Gail G. Pollard; a stepdaughter, Dorothy D. Noon and her husband, Robert L. Noon of San Clemente, Calif.; and a stepdaughter-in-law, Anne H. Dodge. Her remains rest at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave., where the family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Monday. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hollywood Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Collegiate School, North Mooreland Rd., Richmond, Va. 23233.

GARNETT-CARTER
G. Charlene Garnett-Carter, 51, of Asheboro, N.C., died Thursday, January 25, 2001 in Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital. Ms. Garnett was a native of Ashland, Va. and employed with Elastex. She was preceded in death by her sister, Claudia Garnett. She is survived by two sons, Christopher Alan Carter of Randleman, N.C. and Michael Brian Carter of Greensboro, N.C.; three grandchildren, and a sister, Cynthia Garnett of Ashland. Graveside services will be held Sunday, January 28, 2001 at 2 p.m. in Oaklawn Cemetery, conducted by Rev. Robert Armstrong. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Randolph Unit, P.O. Box 515, Asheboro, N.C. 27204 or Hospice of Randolph, P.O. Box 9, Asheboro, N.C. 27204-0009. Arrangements by Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro.
