Departed this life Saturday, January 27, 2001, Mrs. Helen Gray, 83, of Goochland, Va. Remains rest at the Robert Mealy Funeral Home, Goochland, Va. Funeral notice later.

GRUBBS
Mary Ellen Grubbs, age 82, of Sandy Hook, Va., went to be with her Lord Saturday, January 27, 2001. She is survived by her two sisters, Helena G. Grubbs and Rose G. Morrison; several nieces and nephews. Her remains rest at the Lacy Funeral Home, Rt. 522, Mineral, Va., where the family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday. Graveside funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday in Forest Grove Christian Church Cemetery. Mary was a lifelong member of Forest Grove Christian Church, and a retired employee of Peoples Drug with 30 years of service.

HERTIG
Louise A. Hertig, 101 years old, of Richmond, died Thursday, January 25, 2001, at Our Lady of Hope Health Center. She is survived by her son, James L. Hertig of Anderson, S.C.; and daughter, Jane L. Adamson of Vienna, Va.; seven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren. Mrs. Hertig was born in Nebraska, raised in Iowa, and had been a resident of Richmond since 1969. Graveside service 1 p.m. Wednesday, Mount Calvary Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to your favorite charity.

HUDSON
Bessie Weston Hudson, of Chase City, died at her home Friday, January 26, 2001. She is survived by her son, Julian Davis Hudson of Chase City and one brother, Ernest W. Weston Sr. of Chase City. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, January 29, 2001 at Saint John's Episcopal Church, conducted by The Reverend R. Douglas Geddes. Memorial gifts may be made to the Prestwould Foundation, P.O. Box 872, Clarksville, Va. 23927. The family will receive friends at the residence, 33 Grace St., Chase City, at all times, or at Newcomb Allgood Davis Funeral Home between 7 and 8:30 p.m. on Sunday evening.

JONES
Departed this life January 24, 2001, Mrs. Annie Gertrude Redd Jones of 107 Brenton Street. She is survived by three daughters, Grace E. Blount, Judith India Marie Jones and Mary Antoinette Jones; three sons, Clifton W. Sr., Edward L. R. and Leonard J. Jones; 18 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ernest and William Redd; one aunt, Carrie Royal; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; one daughter-in-law, Vergetta Jones; one son-in-law, Marvin Blount; two sisters-in-law, Gloria and Hannah Redd; and other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Joseph Jenkins Jr. Funeral Home, 2011 Grayland Ave., where funeral services will be held Monday, at 1 p.m. Elder Lindbergh W. Cox officiating. Interment Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Family and friends assemble at the funeral home 12:45 p.m. Monday.

KIRTZ
Mary O. Kirtz, 89, of Ashland, formerly of Staunton, died January 27, 2001. She is survived by two sisters, Maude K. Moran and Eunice K. Snier; three grandchildren, Peggy Kay Morrell, Kimberly S. Hutcheson and Howard Kevin Shaver; four great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Miss Kirtz was preceded in death by her daughter, Peggy Kirtz Shaver. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the family residence, #1 Swannee Court, Ashland and 12 to 1 p.m. Tuesday at Henry Funeral Home, Staunton, Va., where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday. Interment Thornrose Cemetery, Staunton, Va. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ashland Vol. Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 667, Ashland, Va. 23005.

LEVITZKI
Francis J. Levitzki, 75, of Mechanicsville, widower of Carol Ann Hopp Levitzki, passed away January 26, 2001. He is survived by a daughter and her spouse, Susan L. and Robert G. Hunrath of Mechanicsville; a son and his wife, Raymond F. and Barbara A. Levitzki of Texas; three grandchildren, Jessica Applegate, Justin and Christopher Levitzki; a brother, Joseph F. Levitzki; and three sisters, Frances Gough, Katherine Naprster and Lucy Balestri, all of New Jersey. Mr. Levitzki was a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII and was a life member of the VFW Post 9808. Remains rest at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee Davis Rd., where the family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. A service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the grave site in Signal Hill Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers, to the Ashcake Rescue Squad.

McALISTER
Clifford Browne McAlister, Jr, of Richmond, born August 27, 1932, went to be with the Lord, January 26, 2001. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ethel L. McAlister and father, C. B. McAlister, Sr. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Louise W. McAlister; four children, Betty Gentry and husband Alan, Clifford B. McAlister III and wife Sarah, Dorothy Knighton, and Virginia (Gina) McAlister and fiance Alan Pitt; five grandchildren, Clifford and Timothy Gentry, Amanda and Kelsey McAlister, and T. J. Knighton; and devoted friends, (Nick) and Joyce Pitt. Mr McAlister retired in 1997 after 43 years of service with Genuine Parts NAPA. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd, where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday and Monday, and where funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday. Interment Westhampton Memorial Park.

McGARRY
Edward J. (Mac) McGarry Jr., 83, of Richmond, passed away January 26, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Dillie T. McGarry; his children, Edward J. McGarry III, Julie M. Holswade, both of Richmond, Elizabeth M. Trop of Virginia Beach; stepdaughter, Andrea C. Owen; and stepson, Michael L. Connally, both of Richmond; seven grandchildren and one great-grandson. Mr. McGarry was a longtime member of the Richmond Camera Club and Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. He was a 35 year employee of the Richmond Newspapers, first as a pressman, then pressroom superintendent until his retirement in 1981. He was a Canadian WWII veteran serving in England with the Armored Corps Division. He received military training from Sandhurst in England. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as a First Lieutenant. He was a naturalized American citizen. He was dearly loved. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., where the family will receive friends 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Entombment at Mt. Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) Association or the American Lung Association.

MESSLER
Max Messler, 85, of Richmond, died January 27, 2001. Survivors include his devoted wife of 60 years, Minnie Barshow Messler; two children, Harold Messler and his wife, Mary, and Cheryl Sporn and her husband, Bill; one brother, Sol Messler; one sister, Freda Burstein; four grandchildren, Stephanie Boswell and her husband, Scott, Jeffrey Messler, and David and Matthew Sporn; and a number of devoted nieces and nephews. Mr. Messler was the owner of Purity Meat Market for 27 years, and was the founding member and past president of B'Nai Shalom Congregation. He was also a member of the Richmond Beth-El Cemetery Committee. Graveside services will be held 2:30 p.m. Monday at B'Nai Shalom Cemetery in Greenwood Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Richmond Beth-El Cemetery Chapel Fund at Forest Lawn.

MICHAELS
Joseph Anthony Michaels died January 24, 2001. He is survived by his devoted wife of 52 years, Miriam Vreeland Michaels; his six children, Melinda Stewart, Kristian V. Michaels, Patricia Harris, Kevin V. Michaels of Virginia, Kerry V. Michaels of New Jersey and Jan V. Michaels of Pennsylvania; and 14 grandchildren, Gabriel, Max, Merrick, Meaghan, Sarah, Patrick, Hilary, Katherine, Kelly, Melinda, Mallory, Matthew, McKenzie and McCormack. He is also survived by three brothers, John, Walter and Louis of Pennsylvania; friend and caregiver, Lorraine Thome. He graduated from Drexel University and Bucknell University, Pa. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He resided in New Jersey for 38 years and was a teacher and football/wrestling coach for 30 plus years. In 1988, he retired to Virginia. A memorial Mass will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Perry Street, Richmond, 2 p.m. Saturday, February 3, 2001. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Richmond at 4600 Cox Rd, Glen Allen, Va. 23060.

MITCHELL
Burlean Lingle Mitchell, 87, of Richmond, formerly of Chatham, Va., died Wednesday, January 24, 2001. Mrs. Mitchell was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Shepard Mitchell Sr. She is survived by one son, Roy S. Mitchell Jr. and wife, Jane of Chapel Hill, N.C.; one daughter, Carol Burlean Mitchell of Siler City, N.C.; one sister, Fern Childers of Pineville, N.C.; two grandsons, Wade Mitchell of Hermitage, Tenn., and Will Mitchell of Wilmington, N.C.; and three great-grandchildren. The Mitchells operated Mitchells Five and Ten Variety Store and the Fashion Shop in Chatham, Va. Graveside services will be held Monday, January 28, at Hillcrest Cemetery, Chatham, Va., at 10 a.m. Memorial gifts may be made to the charity of your choice. Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, in charge of arrangements.

MOSHER
James Avery Mosher, 45, of Richmond, died January 26, 2001. Survived by his brother, Kenneth A. Mosher and his wife, Elizabeth; two nieces, Patty and Jennifer Mosher. Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday in Maury Cemetery.

NEWBY
Mrs. Margaret Ripley Newby of Bon Air, born September 21, 1918, passed away at her residence January 25, 2001. She is survived by her husband, T. Ashby Newby; son, Thomas A. Newby Jr. of Chapel Hill, N.C., and his wife, Charlotte; daughter, Judith N. Kerr of Roanoke, Va.; son, Stephen K. Newby of Forest, Va., and his wife, Elizabeth; brother, John D. Ripley Jr. of Forest, Va.; nine grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Newby was a charter member of Bon Air Baptist Church. The daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John D. Ripley, she was raised and educated in Lynchburg and lived in Bon Air for almost 50 years. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull St. Rd., where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, followed by interment in Sandy Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Deatonville, Va. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bon Air Baptist Church or Forest View Rescue Squad.

OUTLAW
Mrs. Barbara Outlaw of Richmond, departed this life Saturday, January 27, 2001. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Sts. Funeral notice later.

PARSONS
Raymond Elmer Parsons, 79, of Spainville, Nottoway Co., Va., died at his home, Friday, January 26, 2001. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Barbara Williamson Parsons; three sons, Ray Parsons and wife, Gay of Dundas, Gerald Parsons and wife, Mona of Powell, Tennessee, Robbie Parsons and wife, Gwyn of Amelia; four daughters, Sylvia Whitmore of Lynchburg, Burt Lawson and husband, Donnie of Blackstone, Renee Winfree and husband, Tommy, Jackie Jackson and husband, Tommy, all of Amelia; sixteen grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Doris P. Harris of Blackstone; and a brother, Carol W. Parsons of Amelia. His remains rest at the Hamner-McMillian Funeral Home in Blackstone, where the family will receive friends, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Sunday, and where chapel funeral services will be held Monday, January 29 at 2 p.m. Interment Lakeview Cemetery, Blackstone. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the House of Hope Orphanage in Zacapa, Guatemala, c/o Faith Christian Church, P.O. Box 501, Amelia, VA 23002. The family will also receive friends at the home of Donnie and Burt Lawson.

POWERS
Dorothy Dean Taylor Powers, 78, of Richmnd, former resident of Queens Lake, Williamsburg, Va., died unexpectedly, January 26, 2001 in Richmond, Va. Preceded in death by her husband, Col. David A. Powers Jr. of Williamsburg/York Co., Va. and member of Williamsburg Masonic Lodge. Born October 18, 1922, originally from Chevy Chase, Md., she was a graduate of Greenbrier Jr. College and the University of Michigan and attended Julliard School of Music. She was a member of the America Theatre Wing and was a pioneer in early television in Washington, D.C., Channel 5, with her own Talk-Show in the early 50's. Very active in the Republican Party, she was a past Treasurer of the Republican Party in Williamsburg and a lifelong fundraiser for many charities here, across many other parts of the country and abroad. She was a member of Bruton Parish Episcopal Church. She is survived by her daughter, Lee Antoinette Powers of Richmond; son, David Albert Powers III of Midlothian, who is a Past Master of Tuckahoe Masonic Lodge #347, AF&AM and her husband, John J. Matulewicz; and nieces, Betty Shephard Case and her husband, Vernon Leo Case of Richmond and Patty Sizemore McClusky of Concord, Calif. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 30, in the Chester Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, 3050 W. Hundred Rd. The interment will follow at 2:30 p.m. in Cedar Grove Cemetery in Williamsburg. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

PRINCE
Luther J. Prince, age 53, of 3922 Cutshaw Ave., Richmond, died Tuesday, January 23, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Deborah Prince and his children. They will receive friends Monday night, 7 to 9 p.m., at K. L. Jordan Funeral Service, 5008 Nine Mile Rd. Graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Quantico National Cemetery. K L JORDAN
