PULZONE
Paul C. Pulzone, Sr., 73, of Callao (formerly of Alexandria, Va.), died Tuesday, January 23, 2001, at Riverside Hospital in Tappahannock, Va. Mr. Pulzone was born and raised in Alexandria, Va. and lived there until 1979, when he moved to Callao. He retired as an engineer from the US Postal Service. He also worked for Dwyer Plumbing & Heating. In his early years, he was a volunteer member of the Alexandria Fire Dept. He was a member of the American Legion Post 24, Callao Moose 917, Moose Legion 148, Train Collectors Association, and Owls Club of Waynesboro, Pa. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Frances G. Pulzone of Callao; two daughters, Marie Carol, and Angela Jean Pulzone both of Callao; two sons, Paul Carroll Pulzone Jr. of Callao, and Douglas Philip Pulzone of Stafford; and two granddaughters, Amanda Leigh and Abby Ann Pulzone both of Stafford. Also, two sisters, Geraldine McCreary and Cecilia Heitmanek both of Fredericksburg survive him. A memorial service will be held at a later date. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Callao Rescue Squad, P. O. Box 82, Callao, Va. 22435.

RANDOLPH
Miss Hazel Virginia Randolph of 3406 Enslow Ave. departed this life January 23, 2001. She is survived by one sister, Ruth L. Valentine; a devoted caregiver, Gwendolyn Crawford; and a host of relatives. The family may be contacted at 329-3406.

ROSE
Lucille Price Rose, of Richmond, died January 26, 2001. She was preceded in death by her husband Leonard H. Rose; and is survived by a brother Robert E. Price, Jr.; and a sister, Melinda G. Price; two nieces, Mary Jane McCord and Donna Rose; two nephews, Carroll Rose and Robert Sizemore. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave, where the family will receive friend Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. , Monday at Holy Comforter Episcopal Church with interment Westhampton Memorial Park.

SEARS
Daniel Scott Sears, 82 of Richmond, died Friday, January 26, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty Chinn Sears; a son, William Chinn Sears of Guelph, Canada; a grandson, Philip Daniel Sears; and a devoted extended family. Dr. Sears earned his undergraduate degree from Hampden-Sydney College and his Ph.D. from Cornell University. He subsequently worked in research at Goodyear Rubber Company before joining V-C Chemical, where he was director of research. After V-C was acquired by Mobil Oil Company, he became Marketing Manager of the Agricultural Chemical Division. He retired in 1984. Dr. Sears was a dedicated volunteer at Channel 23 for 16 years, where he helped formalize the computer operations. To the end of his life he remained enthusiastically engaged in the world of idea, technology and the arts. The family will receive friends on Sunday, January 28, 2001 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Woody's Funeral Home, Parham Rd, where a memorial service will be held on Monday, January 29, 2001 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

SMITH
Col. Richard Ballenger Smith, 80, of Kents Store, died January 23, 2001 at his home. Born December 25, 1920 in Virginia, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carol Bassett Smith. Both Dick and Carol graduated from Duke University, where they first met. He was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Col. Smith had a distinguished 32-year career in the United States Marine Corps. He served on the U.S.S. Springfield off the coast of Iwo Jima during World War II, received the Legion of Merit Medal during the Vietname War, two Bronze Stars in the Korean War and the Joint Services Commendation Medal. His most memorable tour of duty was with the Royal Marines in England and the Middle East in 1954-55. After his retirement from the Marines in 1973, they purchased a 200-year-old historical home in Fluvanna County and completely restored the mansion house known as "Roadview". Dick loved doing this and was very proud of his beautiful rose garden. He was active in church and community affairs, having been a Boy Scoutmaster, executive director of the Lee-Jackson Foundation in Charlottesville, senior warden of St. John's Episcopal Church in Columbia, past president of the Fluvanna County Historical Society and past president of the Fluvanna County Development Foundation. Surviving are six sons, Brandon of Richmond, Richard Jr. of Charlottesville, Duncan and Willette of Idaho, Barton and wife, Jill of Kents Store, Alan and wife, Marie of Charlottesville, and Bruce and wife, Terri of Louisa; one brother, Sherwood Smith of Washington, D.C.; and seven grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the St. John's Episcopal Church conducted by the Rev. Stewart West. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with full military honors. The family will receive friends at the Sheridan Funeral Home, Kents Store, from 2 to 4 Sunday afternoon.

SMITH
Evelyn Bishop Smith, widower of Charles D. Smith Jr, died Friday, January 26, 2001. She is survived by her son, David Lee Smith of Richmond; one cousin, Early Bishop of Charlottesville. Remains rest at the Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 2110 E. Laburnum Ave, where friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m., Monday, Forest Lawn.

SPANIER
Arnold Spanier, 89, of Richmond, widower of Thea Marcus Spanier, died Thursday, January 25, 2001. He is survived by his brother, Edward Spanier; his wife, Else; his niece, Esther Spanier Binshtok; her husband, Meir Binshtok; their children, Mark, Ron, Debbie; Ron's wife, Danya; and their children; his devoted sister-in-law, Edith Marcus Wachsner; brother-in-law, Kurt Marcus; his wife, Ruth; their daughter, Yvonne; her two sons, Stephen and his wife, Marjorie and Keith and his wife, Traci; and their families. Also, by Willie Mae Green; a special tireless, devoted caregiver and her staff. Mr. Spanier came to this country from Germany in 1939, escaping during the Nazi Holocaust. He came to Richmond via England with his new wife, the late, Thea Marcus Spanier and immediately became active as a salesman and merchant. He was co-owner of Bowles Furniture in Petersburg, among many other ventures with his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Kurt and Edith. Mr. Spanier was a member of Congregation Beth Ahabah and a co-founder of Emek Sholom Holocaust Memorial Cemetery. He was a charter member of the New American Jewish Club and a contributor to numerous charitable organizations. Graveside services will be held today at 11 a.m. in Emek Sholom (Forest Lawn). Contributions may be made to the Rudlin Torah Academy Building Fund, 6801 Patterson Ave. Arrangements by the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home.

SPEASE
Ethel M. Spease, age 82, widow of Junius H. Spease, died Friday, January 26, 2001. Survivors include three daughters, Virginia Douglas, Chester, Trudy Wilmoth, Chester, and Judy Averette, Moseley; son, Roy Spease, Bon Air; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Rd., Midlothian, where a funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday. Interment will follow in Dale Memorial Park.

STUTZ
Alice Reynolds Stutz, 103, formerly of Richmond, died in San Antonio, Texas, on January 24, 2001. She was born in Richmond on July 12, 1898, the daughter of Rev. James W. Reynolds and Mary Gibbs Reynolds. She attended the Woman's College of Richmond. She married Lewis Stutz. They had one daughter, Frances Stutz Hall, who survives. She is also survived by one sister, Marian Reynolds Lawton of Richmond; and three grandchildren in Texas, Courtney, Whitney and Ainsley Hall. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Monday in Maury Cemetery.

SUTHERLAND
Grace Smith Sutherland, widow of E. Linwood Sutherland of Dinwiddie County, Va., died Thursday, January 25, 2001, at the Hermitage Home. Mrs. Sutherland was the daughter of the Rev. Hampden H. Smith Sr. and Carrie Jeter Smith. Survivors include one sister, Miss Annie Jeter Smith of Richmond; sister-in-law, Katharine Russell Smith of Charlottesville, Va.; a nephew, Hampden H. Smith III and his wife, Aine P. Smith of Lexington, Va.; a great-niece, Katharine Smith Santos of New York City; a great-nephew, H. Harrison Smith IV of Alexandria, Va.; and a great-great-niece. Mrs. Sutherland was a member of Ginter Park United Methodist Church. She served on the staff of the Hermitage Methodist Home in Richmond for 34 years. A memorial service will be held in the chapel of the Hermitage Home, 1600 Westwood Ave., 2 p.m. Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Samaritan Fund of the Hermitage Home or to a favorite charity. Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, handling arrangements.

TAYLOR
Mrs. Sadie Johnson Taylor, 75, departed this life January 25, 2001 after a long illness. In addition to her devoted husband of 52 years, Percell M. Taylor Jr., she is survived by one son, Percell M. Taylor III (Miami, Fla.); and one daughter, Katherine Goodwin (Washington, D.C.). Her remains rest at the W.S. Watkins & Son Funeral Home, where her family will receive friends Sunday, 4 to 5 p.m. After 10 a.m. Monday, her remains will rest in Ebenezer Baptist Church, where funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Rev. Wallace J. Cook, pastor, officiating. Interment Mt. Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Ebenezer Baptist Church, 216 W. Leigh St., Richmond, Va. or The St. Francis Home, 2511 Wise St., Richmond, Va.

TIBBITS
Mrs. Judith Anne Tibbits, age 60, died Saturday, January 27, 2001. Arrangements are pending at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 W. Broad St., Glen Allen.

WALL
Catherine Lucilla Wall, age 79, died January 26, 2001 after a long illness. Miss Wall was born in Gresham, S.C. and was raised at King William Court House. She attended Madison College and retired from Virginia Tech Extension Service after 45 years of service. She was active in many county organizations, including the 30 years as secretary of the Forestry Club and President of the Upper King William County Womens Club. She was a life long member of Colosse Baptist Church, where she was charged with revitalizing the cemetery association. She is survived by two sisters, Mary (Lib) Wall Pearson of Manquin and Mabel Wall Willis of Norfolk; three nieces, Lucye Pearson Bosher of Mechanicsville, Julia Scott Wall King of Richmond, Nancy Willis Patterson of Norfolk; seven nephews, David W. Pearson Jr. and William Carol Pearson of Manquin, A. Drewry Willis of New Bern, N.C., Bahre W. Willis of Leesburg, Furman G. Wall Jr. of Virginia Beach, C. Whitfield Wall and A. Franklin Darnell of Richmond; and a very special family friend, Loretta Royals. Funeral services will be held Monday at Colosse Baptist Church at 2 p.m. with Rev. Steven Smith officiating. Visitation from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the B.W. White Funeral Home, King William C.H. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Colosse Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.

WAND
Max Wand, 86, of Richmond, died Thursday, January 25, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Pauline Wand; his brother, Ralph Wand and his wife, Stella; two nieces, Barbara Garber and Esther Wand. Services were private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Jewish Family Services.

WEAKS
Departed this life on January 24, 2001 after a short illness, Samuel Weaks Sr. He is survived by his devoted wife of 48 years, Rosa Weaks; two sons, Samuel Weaks Jr. and Darrell Weaks (Yolanda); two daughters, Delores Westry and Sandra Weaks; 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; sister, Delores Crawford; a host of other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Chiles Funeral Home, 2100 Fairmount Ave. Funeral services will be held Monday 1 p.m. from Asbury United Methodist Church, 324 N. 29th St., with Pastor Preston Leroy Jordan Sr. officiating. Interment Washington Memorial Park. Remains will rest in church one hour prior to service. The family may be contacted at 222-7483.

WHEELHOUSE
Carolyn Sharpe VanFossen Wheelhouse, formerly of Goochland, died January 23, 2001. Survived by one daughter, Trudy DeMao of Goochland; and one grandson, Michael. Remains rest at the Norman Funeral Home, Goochland, Va., where family will receive friends Sunday from 4 to 5 p.m. Graveside service will be held Monday 2 p.m. at Smyrna Baptist Church Cemetery.

WILLIAMS
Arthur (Jack) Williams, 81, of Richmond, died Friday, January 26, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Bessie M. Williams; his son, James L.J. Sluder and wife, Marcia Sluder; a granddaughter, Jennifer Sluder; his sister, Vernelle (Skeeter) Mayo. Remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends 1 to 3 and 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, with a funeral service at 5 p.m. Sunday (today). Interment private.

WINDER
Raymond Clyde Winder Jr., age 76, of Newport News, died on Saturday, January 27, 2001. He was a native of Smithfield and retired from the Prudential Company with 36 years of service was a U.S. Army veteran serving during World War II in the Pacific. Survivors include two sisters, Nancye Winder Wilson, Carrollton and Barbara Winder Murphy, Newport News. A graveside service will be conducted Monday, January 29, at 2 p.m. in St. Luke's Memorial Park, Smithfield, with Dr. Donald R. Rhoton officiating. The family will receive friends, Sunday, January 28 from 2 to 4 p.m. in the home of his sister, Nancye W. Wilson, 22620 Tally Ho Drive, Carrollton. Colonial Funeral Home, Smithfield, is handling arrangements.
