FLYNN
Mr. Edward Daniel Flynn, age 79, died Saturday, July 13, 2002 at his home in Keysville. Ed served in the Untied States Navy on the U.S.S. Goff during WWII. Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Sandy Flynn of Keysville; his son, Shane Flynn and wife, Michelk of New York; brother, John Flynn of South Carolina; sister, Louise Scott of Keysville; five grandchildren, Chase, Dustin, and Casey Flynn of Keysville, Andrew and Olivia Flynn of New York; and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Crews Flynn; parents, Marion and Julia Flynn; brothers, Porter and Fred Flynn; sister, Eva Robinette; grandson, Joey Flynn. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Browning Funeral Home, with interment in Ash Camp Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday.

GILES
Departed this life July 9, 2002, Mrs. Doris S. Giles of Richmond. She is survived by one sister, Alma A. Mishoe of Temple Hills, Md.; three nieces, one nephew, a host of great-nieces and nephews; a host of cousins, among them two devoted, Colonel and Esther Robinson; other relatives and friends, among them three devoted friends, Helen Anthony, and Stanley and Laura Dickens. Remains rest at Walter J. Manning Funeral Home, 700 N. 25th St., where funeral services will be held Monday, 12 noon, Rev. Paul Wilson officiating. Burial Bethia Baptist Church Cemetery, Amelia, Va.

GLOVER
Ms. Mary L. Glover departed this life Wednesday, July 10, 2002. She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Nannie G. Johnson and Mrs. Kate G. Gibson; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Pearl S. Glover; four nieces, Evelyn Henderson, Elizabeth Hayden, Dorothy Lee, and Marshae Murrell; four nephews, Matthew Davis, Frank L. Gibson, Franks S. and Stanley Glover; several great-nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Sts. The family will receive friends at the Second Baptist Church, 105 E. Pilkington St., on Monday, July 15, from 12 to 1 p.m., at which time funeral services will begin, Rev. Lawrence B. HAMLETT
Margaret Hulvey Hamlett formerly of Glen Allen, widow of Charles Henry Hamlett, died Saturday, July 13, 2002. Mrs. Hamlett was a retired employee of Richmond Dry Goods, Co., and a member of Hunton Baptist Church. She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Helen Alexander of Carlisle, Pa., and Mrs. Grace Marshall of Staunton; and a number of nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends 12 to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Road. A graveside service will follow at 2 p.m. at Westhampton Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hunton Baptist Church.

HEDGEPETH
Dr. Thelma Washington Hedgepeth departed this life on Saturday, July 13, 2002 at the Genesis Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Salisbury, Md. She was the daughter of Lucy Washington and the late Louis Washington of Birmingham, Ala. Thelma was a devoted member of the Wicomico Presbyterian Church, where she and her husband attended services for 17 years. She loved to teach and to learn, for she was a scholar/mathematician and administrator for 17 years at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Before her tenure at UMES, she taught at the First National Bank of Boston Macalester College and the University of Minnesota. She combined teaching and graduate work as a Hill Foundation Fellow. She also was assistant director for the Effective School and Project at Harvard University. She began her education in the public schools of Birmingham and enrolled in Fisk University where she received the bachelor's degree in mathematics. She continued her studies at the University of Michigan where she was awarded a masters degree in mathematics, and later she was the first Black woman nationally to receive a PhD in environmental science. Thelma taught math and computer science, and later became chairperson of the department at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, where she received her doctorate. From there, she was appointed to the position of assistant to the vice president for institutional research. She leaves to cherish her memory, a loving and devoted husband, Dr. Chester Hedgepeth Jr.; and son, Dr. Chester Hedgepeth III. Other survivors include her mother, Lucy Washington; sister, JoAnn Meadows; and a host of other relatives and friends. Services July 16, 1 p.m., Wicomico Presbyterian Church in Salisbury, Md. Memorial contributions may be made to the Dr. Thelma Hedgepeth Memorial Scholarship Fund, 1008 Schumaker Woods Rd., Salisbury, Md. 21804.

HENION
William A. Henion "Big Bill", 69, of Richmond, passed away at home on July 11, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Mary V. Henion; son, William Troy Henion and his wife, Tami; and grandson, Mitchel Troy Henion; and other family in New York. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday. A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Virginia Veterans Cemetery, Amelia.

HICKS
Janet Kelley Hicks, 63, of Hilton Head Island, S.C., died suddenly on Thursday, July 4, 2002. Mrs. Hicks, born and educated in Richmond, was the daughter of the late Anne McKee and Wesley Thomas Kelley. She and her husband, Robert, retired to Hilton Head from Fredericksburg in 1997, where she had a long career in interior design. She was president-elect of Indigo Run Women's Club and had been recently named to the Board of Directors of Hilton Head Medical Center and Clinics, where she was also an active volunteer. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Lisa Anne Hicks of Easthampton, Mass. and Robyn Leslie Hicks of Virginia Beach; her sister, Peggy Kelley Reinburg of Norfolk; and her nephew, Alexander Mebane Reinburg of Brooklyn, N.Y. A memorial service was held on Tuesday, July 9 at The Island Funeral Home and Crematory, Hilton Head Island. HITE
Edna P. Hite of Baskerville, died July 12, 2002. Survived by her husband, Jearl M. Hite; her daughter, Joanne Vansickle of Biloxi, Miss.; two sons, Jearald Hite Jr. of Baskerville, and Timothy Hite of Penryn, Calif.; five sisters, Virginia Myrick of Warfield, Nancy Ferguson of Vinton, Joan Wray and Elaine Wright, both of Lawrenceville, and Joyce Campbell of Littleton, N.C.; six grandchildren, Jason and George Houck, Jessica, Kandice, Courtney and Zackery Hite. HOLZGREFE
Margaret Ann Holzgrefe, 55, of Richmond, died July 11, 2002. She was preceded in death by her parents, Fritz and Gertrude Holzgrefe. She is survived by her brothers, Fritz Holzgrefe Jr. and his wife, Ellen of Lafayette, Ind., Joe Holzgrefe of Glen Allen, Va.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Drs. Mary Agnes and Stephen Hamilton of Ithaca, N.Y., Dr. Jeanne Holzgrefe and her husband, Dr. Glenn Westley of Washington, D.C., and Catherine Luckey and her husband, Dr. David Luckey of Richmond; ten nieces and nephews, and three great-nieces and nephews. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Road, where the family will receive friends Sunday, 6 to 8 p.m. with a Rosary at 7:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated, 1 p.m. Monday at St. Michael's Catholic Church. Interment Holy Cross Cemetery. Margaret was an active member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, and had been an active volunteer for the Arthritis Foundation and other local charities. She was a graduate of Marymount School and Virginia Tech, and was formerly a research analyst for the Commonwealth of Virginia. She brought much joy to her family and community. HUBER
Robert Lee Huber, 75, of the Masonic Home, Richmond, Va., died Friday, July 12, 2002. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Mathilde Huber; one son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Ann Huber of Atlanta, Ga.; a sister-in-law, Catherine Gekker; a nephew, Christopher Gekker; and a niece, Katie Gekker. Mr. Huber was a member of the Sandston Masonic Lodge AF&AM, a member of the V.F.W., and a retired employee with the U.S. Government. The family will receive friends at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., Tuesday, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. followed by a Masonic service. Interment private. Daniel Trigg Hurd, 66, of Powhatan, died July 12, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Helen L. Hurd; four daughters and their husbands, Susan and Chris Roehm of Texas, Lisa and Bobby Richards, Jenny and Eddie Lowe, and Kathy and Jay Dodson, all of Powhatan; three brothers, William A. Hurd, Wilkie Hurd, and Freddie Dean, all of Castlewood, Virginia. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Hwy. (Rt. 60), Powhatan. Funeral services will be held Monday, 2 p.m. in the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, Powhatan. Interment church cemetery.

LANE
On Thursday July 11, 2002, Nichole (Nikki) Inez Lane, age 15, earned her wings and joined her grandmothers, Barbara Ford and Marion Inez Lane; and her great-grandmother, Margie Taylor in total eternity. Survivors include her parents, Willie Leroy and Donna Lynn Lane; her older brother, Rebel; her grandparents, Sherman and Doris Dalton; her aunts and uncles, Ann and Walter Hall, and Howard Lane, also Debbie and Frank Zatrepalek, Darrell Dalton, Kim and Tracy Evans, Beverly and Allen Harris, Brian and Mary Oakes; her great-aunt and uncles, Brenda and Gene Taylor; and many cousins and devoted friends. She is also survived by her boyfriend, Travis Smith; and his parents, Rose and Billy Smith; and his brother, William; and special grandparents, Robert and Violet Smith; all of whom she thought of as her second family. Nikki (Baby Girl) enjoyed spending quality time with Travis and he now refers to her as his "angel in the outfield". Nikki was very talented in both art and cosmetology. The family will receive friends at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday, where services will be held 1 p.m. on Monday. Patricia Rose Mason, 67, of Sandston, died Saturday, July 13, 2002. She is survived by her husband, Henry A. Mason Jr.; two daughters, Terri A. DesRoches and Katherine L. Crowder and husband, Ray Crowder Jr.; two sons, James L. Adams Jr. and Thomas W. Adams; one granddaughter, Elizabeth R. Harding; one great-granddaughter, Alexis Rose Garnett; one cousin, Mary Jane Mitchell and husband, Tom Mitchell of Fayetteville, N.C. Mrs. Mason was a retired employee of AT&T. Laura West (Betty) Poindexter, 69, of Chesterfield, went to be with her husband and the Lord on July 11, 2002. She is survived by her son, Ray Poindexter and his wife; five brothers, four sisters; one granddaughter, Tabitha (Tibby) Mae Wells of Rice, Va. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m., and where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, with interment in Dale Memorial Park. Services will be officiated by Rev. Keith Reynolds.

POLLARD
The Rev. Mr. W. Ernest Pollard, 91, of Richmond, passed away July 11, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Mary Pollard; two sons, Emory Pollard of Woodbridge; Joel and his wife, Elaine Pollard of Centreville; a brother, Tom Pollard of Richmond; a niece, Gloria Jean Bridgeforth of Kenbridge; two grandchildren, Karen Pollard, Geoffrey and his wife, Jana Pollard; one great-grandson, Sebastian Pollard, all of Los Angeles. Rev. Pollard retired from the Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church, after serving more than 40 years at some 35 churches. He was a graduate of Emory University and Randolph Macon College. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at St. Peter's United Methodist Church, Montpelier, where funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. with burial in the church cemetery. ROBERTS
Mr. Howard Ned Roberts, 79, husband of Betty Glee Roberts, died Thursday, July 11, 2002 at his residence. He was the son of the late John Edward and Emma Carrington Roberts, and was a veteran of WWII U.S. Army. Ned was a well known civic and business leader. His introduction to business began in 1946 when he moved to Clarksville to become a partner with his father in Roberts' Restaurant. In 1961, he bought his fathers share and became sole owner. In 1954, he also operated Fly-Deth Distributing Co. and during its operation, mailed over 20,000 mailers in one year, enough to get Clarksville Post Office reclassified as a First Class Post Office. Mr. Roberts not only invested in business, he helped others too. With his financial backing, the Clarksville Times, now the News Progress Newspaper was established and a medical clinic was put into operation, operated by Dr. Gillispie. Through his efforts, the Mecklenburg County Life Saving & Rescue Squad was able to obtain additional stretchers, thus eliminating wait time at hospitals. Innovations were the norm for Ned, he originated the name "Rib Eye Steak", but due to timing, failed to receive a trademark. He did, however, hold a trademark on "Chicken N Chips". Recognized as Outstanding Citizen of the Year, first by the Clarksville Jaycees in 1978 and in 1981 by the Clarksville Chamber of Commerce. He also was recognized by receiving the Ezekiel and Weilman Award for most outstanding restaurateur in the state of Virginia. He was a former member of the Clarksville Lions Club, the VFW Post 8163, where he served as a Post Commander, and served on the Clarksville Town Council 14 years. His greatest pride was his son being elected Virginia's youngest mayor. A celebration of life ceremony will be held Sunday, July 14, 2002, 5 p.m. at Watkins Cooper Lyon. The family will gather there immediately afterward to receive friends. Surviving in addition to his wife, are his son and daughter-in-law, H. Wayne and Norma Roberts of Wichita, Kan.; a sister, Alnora Cameron of Palm Coast, Fla.; brothers, Linwood Roberts of Durham, N.C., and Page Roberts of Clarksville; stepchildren, Brenda Knight of Williamsburg, and William Jeffrey Wilburn of Sandston; a grandson, Jason Roberts of Greensboro. You may make contributions to the Mecklenburg County Life Saving & Rescue Squad, Clarksville, Va.
