Mrs. Helen B. (Sis) McKinnon of Richmond died February 18, 2002. She is survived by one daughter, Teresa McKinnon; one stepson, Sam McKinnon; parents, Walter and Bessie Whitehead; three grandchildren, Sherry Gholson, Temeca Akins and Kyle McKinnon; one brother, Willie Brooks (Ola); one sister, Nannie B. Johnson; three great-aunts; three great-uncles, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; one devoted friend, Owen S. McKinnon. Remains rest at Scott-Lightfoot Funeral Home, 3021 N St. after 12:30 p.m. Friday remains will rest in New Light Baptist Church 2000 E. Broad, where funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Rev. Walter L. Smith Jr. officiating. Interment Oakwood Cemetery.

MIXON
Departed this life February 20, 2002, Deacon William A. "Bubba" Mixon of Richmond. Remains rest at Walter J. Manning Funeral Home, 700 N. 25th Street. Funeral notice later.

MURPHEY
Raymond B. Murphey Sr., 86, of Richmond, husband of the late Addie Johnson Murphey, died February 19, 2002. Born in Amelia County, he was the son of the late William Irvin and Gerridiena Vander Riet Murphey. He is survived by two sons, Raymond B. Jr. and Warren E. Murphey; daughter, Elizabeth M. Alley; stepdaughter, Betty D. Johnson; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Road, where the family will receive friends 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Graveside funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Signal Hill Memorial Park, Hanover. Memorial gifts may be made to Liberty Christian Church School, 8137 Liberty Circle, Mechanicsville, 23111.

NAHLIK
Wenceslaus J. "Lucky" Nahlik of Chester died February 20, 2002. He served in the Virginia Air National Guard and was a retired mail carrier. Mr. Nahlik was preceded in death by his wife, Sidney Harvey Nahlik. He is survived by a sister, Mary Meeka and a sister-in-law, Rita Nahlik, both of St. Louis, Mo.; close friend, Ann Barker of Chesterfield; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, February 23, 2002 at 11 a.m. in the Chesterfield Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Friday, February 22, 2002 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment in Sunset Memorial Park.

PAYNE
Stanley J. Payne, 87, of Ashland, the widower of Roxie J. Payne, passed away Wednesday, February 20, 2002. He is survived by his son, Stan L. and his wife, Elia Payne; a granddaughter, Penni Meredith; and a great-great-grandson, Jared Meredith, both of Mount Laurel, N.J. Stanley and Roxie were the original founders of an R.V. Group later named Roxie's Ramblers. Services and interment private. Reid Funeral Home, Ashland, assisting the family. DIGNITY MEMORIAL

Barbara Brunette Pearsall, age 62, of Blackstone, Va., died February 5, 2002. Funeral services will be conducted 10:30 a.m., Saturday at the Pearsall Family Plot, 5318 Grubby Road, Wilsons, Va. Williams Funeral Home, Lawrenceville in charge of arrangements.

SETTLE
Garnett Taylor Settle, 75, of Chesterfield, died Wednesday, February 20, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Browning Settle; three daughters, Suzan Jones, Judy Naquin and Kathy Settle; two sisters, Edith Blankenship and Elizabeth Monk; nine grandchildren, Petty Officer Jonathan Jones and his wife, Tina, 2nd Lt. David Jones, Jennifer, Stephanie, Kimberly and Jessica Naquin and Michelle, Thomas and Rachel Griffin; three great-grandchildren, Eric, Sierra and Jakob Jones. Mr. Settle served in the Army/Air Corps during WWII, after which he was a graduate of Virginia Tech. He was retired from DGSC after 30 years, and a long-time member of Belmont United Methodist Church. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends 2 to 3:30 and 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, and where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday. Interment Dale Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Belmont United Methodist Church.

SMITH
David Smith III of Richmond suddenly departed this life on Tuesday, February 19, 2002. He was a career employee with The United States Postal Service where he retired as a Manager/Plant Systems/Database Analyst. He was a member of Fifth Street Baptist Church. He served in the United States Army from 1971 to 1977, and received a National Defense Service Medal with an honorable discharge. He was preceded in death by his mother, Dolores Cottrell Pollard; father, David Smith II; and sister, Deborah J. Smith. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Brenda L. Page-Smith, Esquire; one daughter, Rashella C. Smith; stepdaughter, Clynestra E. Bright; two step-sons, Dell and Sean Carter; two brothers, Christopher F. Smith and Lawrence C. Smith; a mother-in-law, Mary L. Page; two sisters-in-law, Daphne F. Smith and Pamela R. Smith; four aunts, Barbara C. Washington, Lauretta C. Crawley, Hazel J. Tomlin and Catherine Mills; three uncles, Harvey Mills Sr., Franklin Washington and Melvin Crawley; step-father Kenneth N. Washington; three nieces, Latroyal E., Shayla C. and Crystal T. Smith; two nephews, Lawrence C.M. Smith and Devon Spears; and a host of relatives and friends. Remains rest at Henry W. Dabney Funeral Home in Ashland. Family will receive friends Friday, February 22, 2002 at Fifth Street Baptist Church, 2800 3rd Ave., from 7 to 8 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at Third Union Baptist Church, 452 Walkerton Road, Route 629, King William County, Saturday, February 23, 2002 at 1 p.m. Rev. Wilbert D. Talley will officiate the services. Interment church cemetery. Family and friends please assemble at the church at 12:30 p.m. Donations may be made in the name of David Smith III to The National Kidney Foundation of Virginia in lieu of flowers.

STILLMAN
Katherine Gion Stillman, 24, of Henrico County, died suddenly at home on Tuesday, February 19, 2002. She is survived by her father, Ronald K. Stillman; mother, Rebecca Fox Stillman; grandparents, Esther Stillman and William and Naomi Fox; great-grandparents, James Smith of Rochester, Pa. and Esther Fox of Baden, Pa.; and her special friend, Justin Webb. She was a 1996 graduate of Mills E. Godwin High School. Friends may visit the family at Park West Club House on Saturday, February 23 from 1 to 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials in her honor may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

THOMPSON
William Taliaferro Thompson Jr., M.D., 88, of Richmond, widower of Jessie Baker Thompson, died Tuesday, February 19, 2002. He retired as Chairman of the Department of Medicine at the Medical College of Virginia. He is survived by two sons, W.T. Thompson III and Addison Baker Thompson; one daughter, Jessie Thompson Krusen; one sister, Anne Thompson Rose; one brother, D. Gregg Thompson; and 11 grandchildren, Carey Thompson, Sarah Thompson, Anne Taliaferro Thompson, W.T. Thompson, Addison B. Thompson Jr., Susan S. Thompson, Daniel W. Thompson, Jessie Peyton Thompson, William A. Krusen III, Isabelle B. Krusen and Taliaferro Thompson Krusen. The family will receive friends 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, February 23 at First Presbyterian Church. TOMLINSON
Christopher Lee Tomlinson was born and died in Annapolis, Md. on February 17, 2002. He was the infant son of Jami Lee Strickland and Christopher Wayne Tomlinson of Chesterfield County; the grandson of Pamela H. Strickland, Jammie G. and Charles R. Wellons, Donald J. Strickland and Charles W. Tomlinson; and the beloved godson of Wendy M. Burton and Richard H. Johnson. A memorial service will be held at 4216 Woods Ridge Lane, Prince George, Va., on Saturday, February 23 at 2:30 p.m. Family and close friends are invited to attend.

Lorene Gittman Toots, 91, of Richmond, died Tuesday, February 19, 2002. She was the widow of Earl Toots and was preceded in death by a son, Rufus Gittman. She is survived by two sons, Willie A. Throckmorton and Emmett T. Osterbind and his wife, Carolyn; two daughters, Juanita Harrison and her husband, Bob, and Edith Peters, all of Richmond; a daughter-in-law, Ruby Gittman; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, February 22, 2002 at 1 p.m. at the Chesterfield chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, with interment to follow in Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends tonight at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Steven "Steve" Mark Turner, 39, of Powhatan, died February 19, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Tammy Sanders Turner; two sons, Matthew L. Turner and Joshua S. Turner; father and his wife, Lee and Shalia Turner of Wise; mother and her husband, Marie and Bob Farmer of Powhatan; two sisters, D'Lisa Mullins of Abingdon, Jessica Farmer of Powhatan; stepsister, Robin Correll of Nebraska; and stepbrother, Brad Clark of Tennessee. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Hwy. (Rt. 60), Powhatan. Margaret Kilby Tyus, 84, of Richmond, died February 18, 2002. Widow of Lewis Williamson Tyus Jr., she was born in Rapphannock Co., Va. to the late Walter Blueford Kilby and Margaret Frances Kilby. She is survived by many nieces and nephews. She was retired from the Life of Virginia with many years of service. She was a member of F.T. Baptist Church, Sperryville, Va.; Scotchtown Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution; Richmond Stonewall Jackson Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy; and Blanche Spencer Chapter 11 OES. The family will receive friends at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Vincent J. Vitale, 69, of Mechanicsville, formerly of Connecticut, died Tuesday, February 19, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Nancy L. Vitale; two sons, James and his wife, Veronica Vitale and Kenneth Vitale; four grandchildren, Jennifer, Kelly, Michael and James Vitale. Mr. Vitale retired from AMF Bakery. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, February 23, 2002 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd. John Richard Ware, age 68, of Amelia, died on February 19, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Alice Poe Ware; three stepchildren, Cheryl Evans, William E. WHITMORE
Ethel Ballagh Whitmore, 103, passed away Tuesday, February 19, 2002 at Southside Regional Medical Center. She was born in Cambridge Springs, Pa., and was the daughter of the late Robert J. and Ella S. Ballagh and the widow of William Harvey Whitmore. Mrs. Whitmore was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathleen Van Dyke Whitmore; and a sister, Mabel Ballagh Snyder. She had been a resident of Colonial Heights for 74 years until she moved in 1997 to the Petersburg Home for Ladies. Mrs. Whitmore was a member of Highland United Methodist Church. She is survived by one nephew, Charles B. Snyder and wife, Majorie of Goldsboro, N.C.; three great-nephews, David P. Snyder, Goldsboro, N.C., Stephen Snyder and wife, Melissa of Perkinsville, Vt. and Brian Snyder of Chapel Hill, N.C,; and one great-niece, Susan Elizabeth Hook and husband Brian of Ashville, N.C. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, February 23, 2002 at 11 a.m. in the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home with the Rev. William Rawlings III and the Rev. Darwood Rowan officiating. Interment will be in Blanford Cemetery. George Buford Altice, 83, of Chesterfield, passed away Saturday, September 21, 2002. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mildred; children, Cheryl Compton and her husband, Glenn, LaDon Altice, Candace Altice, Lana Lefferts and her husband, Terry, Daphne Amos and her husband, Bob, Gregory Altice and his wife, Judy, Galen Altice, Dwayne Altice and his wife, Faye, Danny Altice; and his chosen adopted daughter, Janet Jourdan; a brother, Billy C. Altice and his wife, Everlene; a sister-in-law, Patsy Robertson; 21 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Altice was a veteran of WWII.
