GIANFORTONI
Elenore Gianfortoni of Lake Worth, Fla. and formerly of New York City died peacefully March 23, 2001 in Richmond, Va. She will be greatly missed by her brother, Howard Koss of Potomac, Md.; her daughters, Susan Holbrook of Marlboro, New Hampshire and Roberta Gianfortoni of Brookline, Mass.; her son, Joseph G. Gianfortoni of Richmond; her six grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and many friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Gianfortoni. She was born in the Bronx, New York, February 22, 1912. For more than 30 years she taught in the New York City Public Schools. In her retirement she remained active volunteering both at Pine Jog Environmental Educational Center in West Palm Beach for 20 years and at Covered Bridge Condominiums in Lake Worth, Fla. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be sent to Pine Jog Environmental Educations Center, c/o Rita Adamo, Office Manager, 6301 Summit Avenue, West Palm Beach, Fla. 33415.

GRANT
Dr. Carroll C. Grant Jr. of Fredericksburg, Va., formerly of Richmond, Va., died March 23, 2001. Memorial services will be announced.

HAMMONS
Juanita Marion Foote Hammons, 89, of 154 Fishersville Road, Fishersville, died early Saturday morning, March 24, 2001 at Augusta Medical Center in Fishersville. She was born April 7, 1911 in Stokesville, Va., a daughter of the late Edward Lacy and Bertha Byrd Marion. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Henry A. Foote, and her second husband, James L. Hammons. Survivors include a daughter, Marion Byrd Hart of Fishersville, with whom Mrs. Hammons made her home; and two brothers, Grubert Woodrow Marion of Staunton and Wallace W. Marion of Waynesboro; as well as one grandson. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday by Dr. Pat Hunt in Riverview Cemetery. The family will receive friends 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at Reynolds Funeral Service of Waynesboro. Memorial contributions may be made to the Annual Fund c/o The Development Office of Mary Baldwin College, Staunton, Va. 24401.

HUDSON
Mrs. Gracie R. Hudson, age 88, of South Hill, died Friday, March 23, 2001. She was the widow of Willie H. Hudson and is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Gordon H. and Nancy Hudson and Norman J. and Jennifer Hudson, all of South Hill; eight grandchildren; and one brother, Jack Rainey of South Hill. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 26 by Dr. Walter G. Laseter at Farrar Funeral Chapel with interment to follow in the Hudson Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial considerations may be directed to the South Hill Fire Department, 114 Brunswick Avenue, South Hill, Va.; the Southside Rescue Squad, P.O. JACKSON
Mrs. Annibe T. Jackson of Overbrook Rd., Richmond, Va., departed this life March 21, 2001. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugo Van Jackson Sr. Surviving are a devoted son, Hugo Van Jackson Jr. and wife, Sylvia Brown-Jackson; grandson, Hugo III and wife, Michelle; great-grandsons, Van and Varon of Columbia, Md.; two stepgrandsons, Tony Johnson of Richmond and Joseph Johnson of Portsmouth, Va.; two grand-nieces, Helen Vines of Chesterfield Co. and Pamela Piggee of Atlanta, Ga.; niece-in-law, Goldie Van Jackson; and a host of nieces, nephews; devoted friends; lifelong friends, Aubrey and Georgia Cousins, Mary Winston and Thelma Booker; and caregiver, Julia Burnette. After 12 noon Monday, remains will rest in First African Baptist Church, 2700 Hanes Ave., where the family will receive friends from 12:45 to l:30 p.m., and where funeral services will be held at 1:30, Rev. Dennis E. Thomas officiating. Interment Roselawn Memory Garden. Arrangements by Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Blvd.

JOHNSON
Linwood Johnson, 60, of Tappahannock, died March 22, 2001 at his residence. He is survived by his wife, Shirley; two sons, Leon and Linwood; his mother, Evelyn; one granddaughter, four sisters, Gertrude Martin of Tappahannock; Brenda Butler, Barbara Morgan and Faye Trent, all of Richmond. Funeral service will be held 12 Noon Tuesday at the Cedell Brooks Funeral Home, Port Royal, Va. Interment First Mt. Olive Baptist Church Cemetery, Newtown, Va. Remains can be viewed from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and from 10 a.m. Tuesday until service time.

JOHNSON
Rosa Whitby Johnson, 76, died Saturday, March 24, 2001. She was born in Southampton County, a daughter of the late Archie Marvin and Mamie Jarratt Whitby, and was the widow of Clyde Anderson Johnson. Rosa was a former resident of Richmond, retired from Deluxe Printers and a member of Hebron Baptist Church. Survivors include one daughter, Margaret Johnson of Franklin; three brothers, Willis Whitby of Bellbrook, Ohio, Raymond Whitby of Capron and Joe Whitby of Gallatin, Tenn. She was predeceased by a brother, Pete Whitby. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Wright Funeral Home Chapel, Franklin, with Rev. Tommy Speight officiating. Burial will follow in Capron Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. this evening at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o Mrs. Ruth Petty, 116 Southampton Road, Franklin, Va. 23851.

Gertrude Allen Kidd, 86, of Richmond, passed away March 23, 2001. She is survived by two daughters, June Kidd Sears and her husband, Robert, Brenda Kidd; one son, Allen Kidd and his wife, Linda; one sister, Ethel Crisp of Mechanicsville; and one brother, Claude V. Allen of New Jersey; two grandchildren, Jeffery S. Sears and Diane S. Bowers of Melfa; three great-grandchildren, Benjamin Bowers of Melfa, Kristin Bowers of Melfa and Rachel Sears. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends Sunday, 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., and where a funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday with interment to follow, Sunset Memorial Park.

KNIBB
Margherite Chenault Knibb of Crozier, Va., wife of James Clopton Knibb, died March 23, 2001 after a brief illness. Survivors include her husband; two daughters and their husbands, Louise K. Dooley and Edwin L. Dooley Jr. of Lexington, Va., and Frances G. Knibb and Sidney M. Wolf of Putney, Vt.; one granddaughter and her husband, Kathleen D. Harrell and Joseph A. Harrell of Richmond; one sister, Marion Chenault Vick of Cape Charles, Va. Rita had been vice president of the Virginia Home Demonstration Clubs and an active member of Goochland Garden Club, the Goochland Women's Club, the Crozier Club, the Security-Ettes of the ACCA Temple Shrine of Richmond, Family Service Society and many other organizations. She volunteered in the Goochland Schools and was active in her church for many years. She took a great interest in gardening, birds and needlework. The family will receive friends at the Norman Funeral Home, Goochland, Va., Sunday, March 25, from 3 to 5 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Hebron Presbyterian Church, 2 p.m. Monday, March 26. Interment Greenwood Memorial Gardens. If desired, memorials may be made to Hebron Presbyterian Church, 1040 Shallow Well Rd., Manakin-Sabot, Va.

LANE
Frank Mathews "Buddy" Lane, 73, of Richmond, passed away March 22, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Inez Foster Lane; daughter, Robin Paige Lane of Mechanicsville; two grandchildren, Morgan E. Jeter and Mathew L. Jeter; sister, Dorothy Faircloth of Maryland; stepbrother, Samuel J. Ballas of Richmond; stepsister, Sissy Brooks of Atlanta, Ga.; a host of nieces and nephews; and his two best friends, Karl and Kenneth Harris. Mr. Lane was a member of Glen Allen Masonic Lodge 131 AF&AM and the American Legion Post 244. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday with a Masonic service at 7 p.m. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Glen Allen Baptist Church. LEAVELL
Cheri L. Leavell of Richmond died March 22, 2001. She was preceded in death by her mother, Sadie Vanlandingham. She is survived by her husband, Richard Leavell; two sons, Jason and Justin Leavell; her father, Alton Vanlandingham; one sister, Linda Sweet and her husband, Donald Sweet; a devoted companion and family, William Fleshood, Lydia and Travis. The family will receive friends 4 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, followed by a memorial service at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave. Interment private.

McCATHERN
Hugh Howbert McCathern, age 31, of South Beach, Miami, Fla., and Richmond, was lost at sea on March 1, 2001, while blue hole diving and exploring the Double Drop cave system. This is a massive fracture/fault line cave discovered in 1999 and located offshore several miles south of Kemps Bay, South Andros Island in the Bahamas. Hugh was born and raised in Richmond and attended North Carolina Wesleyan College, Virginia Commonwealth, and Florida International Universities. Hugh was a professional diver, instructor and dive master, who worked primarily in the Atlantic coastal waters of Florida and the Bahamas. He also made dive trips to the waters of Mexico and Silver Banks off the coast of the Dominican Republic, where he was involved in whale photo shoots. In the Pacific, his diving took him to Cairns Island and Australia's Great Barrier Reef in 1998 and 2000, Guam, Hawaii, the Coral Sea, and Truk Lagoon, Micronesia, site of countless remains of WWII ships and planes. For the past two years, he has worked with IMAX Film Crews, and pursued cave diving, as the dive master of the M/V Ocean Explorer, charting new territory, going where none had gone before. He is survived by his parents, Jessie Howbert McCathern and William W. McCathern Jr. of Richmond; one sister, Ashley McCathern Ziviello, her husband, Alfred Gerald Ziviello Jr., their son, Madison Howbert Ziviello and daughter, Kirsten Garber Ziviello of Loudoun County; two brothers, William Walker McCathern III and his wife, Robin Harris McCathern and their three sons, William Walker McCathern IV, Ian Harris McCathern and Bishop O'Neal McCathern of Richmond; and Montague Lancaster McCathern of Salt Lake City, Utah; and his godfather, George Wayne Anderson of Richmond. A memorial service will be held at Saint Stephen's Episcopal Church at the corner of Grove Avenue and Three Chopt Road on Friday, March 30, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Divers Alert Network (DAN), the Peter B. Richard Lewis Meador, 46, passed away March 22, 2001, at his home. Preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Dewey Meador, Jr. and Goldie G. Kast Meador; and older brother, Samuel (Sonny) Dewey Meador, III. Survived by his wife, Lillian Anne Young Matthews Meador; and his ex-wife, Cynthia E. Tolbert; daughters, Wendolyn (Wendy) Dawn M. Campbell and her husband, Josh, and Angela Jean Meador; and granddaughter, Lauren Elizabeth Campbell; sisters, Melody Meador-McKay Clark and husband, Ken, M. Marie Meador and Karen M. Garland and husband, Chester (Chip); brothers, Christopher Joseph Meador and Donald Linwood Conner and his wife, Renee; nephews, Jeffrey Duane McKay, Adam Daniel Meador and Adam David Meador; nieces, Amy Elizabeth McKay and Tara Nicole Turner. Hannah Fallin Pinkard, 71, of Newland, died March 24, 2001. Surviving are daughters, Cindy Taylor and husband, Joe of King and Queen Courthouse, and Linda Clark of Newland; son, David Pinkard and wife, Jane of Tappahannock; sister, Mary Fallin Hague; brother, Charles Fallin Hague; brother-in-law, George E. Hynson of Newland; grandchildren, April and Tony Pinkard, Stephen and Kevin Clark and Christine Reynolds; nieces, Mary Ann Maine, Gail Beale and Carol Brooks; nephews, Larry Brooks and Warren Young.
