WOOD
Dr. John Henry Wood, resident of The Hermitage at Cedarfield in Henrico County, died Monday, March 19, 2001. He was 76. Born November 18, 1924, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, he was the only child of the late Daisy West Wood and Edgar Ernest Wood. Raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Dr. Wood received his bachelor of science and master of science at the University of Manitoba. Both degrees were in chemistry. He received his Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Ohio State University in 1950. It was while he was at Ohio State University that Dr. Wood met his future wife, Mary Elizabeth Snodgrass, who was also a doctoral candidate (in economics). They were married on November 18, 1950. He was later proud to obtain his United States citizenship. Dr. and Mrs. Wood celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on November 18, 2000, with a renewal of their vows. Dr. Wood's career began at Colgate/Palmolive in the chemistry section of research and development. During that time he also taught evening classes at Columbia University. He later accepted a part-time teaching position at Rensler Polytechnic Institute in New York as associate professor (while working on post-doctoral training). Afterward, he accepted a position in Research and Development at Bristol Meyers in New Jersey. Dr. Wood was a part of creating and refining numerous products still on the market today. In 1969, Dr. Wood left his position as director of research and development at Bristol Meyers and moved the family to Virginia, where he accepted a position as a full professor at the School of Pharmacy at the Medical College of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University. His position at MCV provided Dr. Wood the opportunity to pursue two of his passions - teaching and research. Dr. Wood created the Ph.D. program at the School of Pharmacy offering pharmacists the opportunity for doctoral studies and designation. Many of his students came from other countries. Dr. Wood worked very closely with every doctoral candidate and struggled with them as they overcame obstacles, including language, to obtain their Ph.D. His students' success was one of his greatest pleasures. Former students of his have commented that his was the toughest class they had, but it was also the one they remembered the most information from. Dr. Wood was also able to continue his various drug research studies while at MCV. He did numerous studies in the interactions of pharmaceuticals with each other and over-the-counter products. He worked to help develop the system of labeling that pharmacists use when filling prescriptions. Dr. Wood completed numerous research projects for such pharmaceutical companies as AH Robins. He was instrumental in the development of the medication, digoxin, widely used for cardiac patients. In fact, his knowledge and background with digoxin led to his inclusion on the team of doctors and specialists that developed the drug protocol for former President Richard Nixon. In 1989, Dr. Wood retired from the academic world as professor emeritus after 20 years of teaching at MCV/VCU. At his retirement dinner, numerous former students came from around the country and overseas to honor him. The School of Pharmacy honored him by an endowed award in his name to be provided to the outstanding graduate student of pharmacy each year. Among his many accomplishments are the following: member of the Order of Masons, Blue Lodge, 32nd Degree; membership in Phi Lambda Epsilon Honorary Chemical Society; membership in the Society of Sigma Xi devoted to the promotion of research and science; membership in Rho Chi Pharmaceutical Honor Society. He held officer's positions in a number of these organizations. He was also awarded the designation academy fellow from the American Pharmaceutical Association Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Dr. and Mrs. Wood moved into The Hermitage at Cedarfield in 1996, where they immediately became a part of the community. Dr. Wood served as a member of the Resident Committee, and was recently re-elected for a second term, an honor he accepted proudly. Dr. Wood is survived by his wife, Mary; his two daughters and their husbands, Alice and Rick Lescault of Virginia Beach, Va., and Beverly and Dane Laughlin of Eunice, La.; and his two grandchildren, Brion and Erinn Lescault of Virginia Beach, Va. His former students carry on his legacy. A service celebrating the life of Dr. Wood will be held April 21 at 3 p.m. at The Hermitage at Cedarfield (2300 Cedarfield Parkway, Richmond, Va. 23233). The family respectfully asks that attendees not wear black. Any honorariums should be forwarded to his endowed award (The Dr. John Wood Award) at the School of Pharmacy, Medical College of Virginia (School of Pharmacy, Development Office, P.O. Box 980581, Richmond, Va. 23298-0581).

Elizabeth Oglesby Smith
May 26, 2001
Elizabeth Oglesby Smith of Goochland, who served as first secretary of the Virginia Planned Parenthood organization and who was president of the Richmond chapter during the mid-1960s, died Thursday at her home after a long illness. A native of North Carolina, she was 81.
Mrs. Smith's husband, S. Strother Smith Jr., was called to serve during World War II, leaving his new bride to live with his father in Richmond. While there, she was convinced by her husband's aunt to help with an organization she had co-founded. Mrs. Smith was enlisted for her already-proven skills as a secretary.
Virginia Planned Parenthood was an outgrowth of work targeting mothers in Fauquier County where tuberculosis ran rampant. The disease was often unwittingly passed from mother to child. Education was, as it is today, the essence of the program.
Through her early involvement, Mrs. Smith's interest in Planned Parenthood's mission increased. As president of the Richmond chapter during the turbulent 60s, Mrs. Smith saw a real need for education of young women dealing with new issues springing from a loosening of societal constraints. Low-income mothers were also a focus of educational initiatives.
"She just felt that women needed the information to make some choices themselves," said her daughter, the Rev. Caroline Smith Parkinson of The Plains.
In addition to the organization's facilities, Mrs. Smith stressed outreach in the community. She made certain the group manned a booth each year at the Virginia State Fair.
"That was an important thing because you hit different people - people who might not have known about the office otherwise," Parkinson said.
It was, she said, about "raising people's consciousness."
Mrs. Smith was also an independent insurance agent and served as manager of S. Strother Smith Jr. Associates Insurance Agency Inc. from the late 1950s until her husband sold the business in the late 1970s.
In addition to her husband and daughter, Mrs. Smith's survivors include two sons, the Rev. S. Strother Smith III of Abingdon and Richard H. Smith II of Alexandria.
A funeral will be held at St. James's Episcopal Church in Richmond today at 11 a.m. Burial at Hollywood Cemetery will follow a reception at the church after the service.
