Wilson Dallas "Bubba" Smiley, 43, of Richmond, passed Tuesday, November 6, 2001. He is survived by his father and mother, Forrest and Lulu Taylor; loving grandmother, Helen Taylor; three sisters, Carolyn Frazier, Sandra McKenney and Barbara Ford; one brother, David Smiley; and a dear friend, Steven Nine; 11 nephews and nieces. Remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave, where the family will receive friends 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and where services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday. Interment Washington Memorial Park.

TAYLOR
Mary Elba Council Taylor, 90, of Boykins, died Monday, November 5, 2001. Survivors include two daughters, Mary Addie Flowers and her husband, J. Bruce Flowers of Drewryville and Harriette Singleton and her husband, Hugh of Mechanicsville, Va.; a son, Rowland L. "Bucky" Taylor and his wife, Vickie of Franklin. She was preceded in death by two sons, Henry Thomas Taylor Jr. and Gene Andrew Taylor. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Boykins Baptist Church. Burial will be in Beechwood Cemetery. Wright Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

WHALEY
Departed this life November 4, 2001, Benjamin F. Whaley of 2919 E. Marshall St. He was preceded in death by his parents, Laura M. and Leroy Whaley Sr.; and brother, Omar Hasan "Van" Whaley. He is survived by two sons, Kenneth M. and Michael Whaley Sr.; four grandchildren, Angel, Michael Jr., Michelle and Brian Whaley; one sister, Deacon Carolyn Slaughter; two brothers, Leroy Jr. and William T. "Bo" Whaley; several nieces, nephews and cousins; two daughters-in-law, Vanessa and Darcie Whaley; other relatives and friends, among them, Mildred T. Whaley and Rev. James Blake. Remains rest at Joseph Jenkins Jr. Funeral Home, 2011 Grayland Ave., where the family will receive friends 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Funeral Thursday, 1 p.m., Fifth Baptist Church, 1415 W. Cary St., where remains will lie in state one hour prior funeral time. Dr. Earl M. Brown, pastor, officiating. Interment Riverview Cemetery. Family, friends and organizations assemble at the church 12:45 p.m. Thursday. If you desire, contributions may be made to the Fifth Baptist Church Building Fund.

ALDRIDGE
Ray W. Aldridge, age 84, a native of Richmond, Va., died April 6, 2001, in Newport Beach, Calif. He is survived by his wife, Madeline Aldridge; two daughters, Patricia A. Dodd and Rayline A. Anderson; a son, Woody Aldridge; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Interment will be Wednesday in Rose Hills Memorial Park, Whittier, Calif. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Ruth Circle at Greenwood Methodist Church.

AUSTIN
Evelyn Duncan Austin, age 76, of Lawrenceville, Va., died April 8, 2001. She is survived by her daughter, Bonnie Maslen of Lawrenceville; two grandchildren, Barbara Ann Longamore and Frederick Joseph Maslen, both of Lawrenceville; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 7 p.m. Tuesday at Williams Funeral Home, Lawrenceville, followed by a visitation. A visitation will also be held Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Summerset Funeral Home, Salisbury, N.C., and a graveside service 11 a.m. Thursday at the National Cemetery, Salisbury, N.C. Memorials may be made to the Brunswick Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 33, Lawrenceville, Va. 23868. Williams Funeral Home, Lawrenceville, in charge of arrangements.

BARNES
Sol Ernest Barnes, age 74, of 467 Westover Hills Blvd., Richmond, died April 5, 2001, in Chippenham Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Martha B. Barnes; five children, Sol Jr., James, Ronnie, Dorothy and Linda Barnes; three sisters, Olia M. Russell, Bernice Barnes and Maria Russell; one brother, Nathaniel Barnes; and a host of other relatives. Funeral service will be held Thursday, April 12, at Morning Star Baptist Church, 3509 Midlothian Turnpike, Richmond, Va., at 11 a.m., Dr. J.I. McCrary Jr. officiating, with burial following in the Greater Hayes Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, 1879 Union Level Road, South Hill, Va. The body will lie in state at the church from 10 a.m. until hour of funeral. Feggins Funeral Home of South Hill, Va., in charge of the arrangements.

BRADSHAW
Julia Bolling Bradshaw passed away Sunday April 8, 2001 at her home in Tappahannock, Va. She was a loving mother and avid gardener. She was born June 18, 1922 in Blackstone, Va., the daughter of Zula and John Stith Bolling. She is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, James Edward Bradshaw; daughters, Barbara Tomczak and husband, Randy of Carlsbad, Calif., and Nancy Gottwald and husband, Jim of Goochland, Va. Grandchildren include Christopher St. James of Beverly Hills, Calif., James Matthew Gottwald, and Sarah Wren Gottwald of Goochland, Va. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Greenwood Memorial Gardens, 12609 Patterson Ave. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Blackstone Baptist Church, Blackstone, Va.

BROOKS
Lawrence Claude Brooks, 85, of Tappahannock, and a resident of the Masonic Home of Virginia in Richmond, died Monday, April 9, 2001. He retired with 37 years of service with Virginia Power and was a member of Tappahannock Memorial United Methodist Church and was a member of Arlington Masonic Lodge No. 102 AF&AM, Millers Tavern, for over 50 years. Survived by his wife, Bernice King Brooks; a daughter and son-in-law, Mae Lynne and Peyton Guest Jr. of Tappahannock; a sister, Doris Mason of Dallas, Texas. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday in Marks-Bristow Funeral Home, Tappahannock. Interment in Essex Cemetery, Tappahannock. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and a Masonic memorial service will be held 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home on Tuesday. Memorial gifts may be made to Tappahannock Memorial United Methodist Church, Tappahannock, Va. 22560 or the Masonic Home of Virginia, 4101 Nine Mile Road, Richmond, Va. 23223.

BULLARD
Doris Jean Robertson Bullard of Manakin-Sabot, Va., formerly of Louisville, Ky., died April 6, 2001 after a brief, but courageous battle with cancer. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mamie Campbell Robertson; her brothers, John and Harry Robertson; and her son-in-law, Don Kerr. She is survived by four children, Cindy Blaske of Louisville, Ky., Pam Kerr, Manakin-Sabot, Chip Wood, Osage, Oka. and Sandy Smith, Kankakee, Ill. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Lori and Corey Blaske, Erin Kerr, Kate Wood and Austin and Lyndsey Smith. Also surviving a brother, Don; and two sisters-in-law, Bernice and Ruth Robertson. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, April 11 at 11 a.m. at the Gayton Kirk, 11421 Gayton Rd., Richmond, Va. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Camp Comfort, 12276 Stancroft Rd., Rockville, Va. 23146 or the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 6359, Glen Allen, Va. 23058.

Janie Boone Burke, 75, of Richmond, died Sunday, April 8, 2001. She is survived by her son, Laverne Burke and wife, Linda of Richmond; two grandchildren, Brandon and Shelley Burke; one brother, Quillie Boone; one sister, Nettie Lively of Radford; several nieces and nephews. Remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, and where services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday. Interment Oakwood Cemetery.

LaVerne L. Denton, 73, of Richmond, died Sunday, April 8, 2001. Mrs. Denton was predeceased by her twin sister, Ivy L. Stowe. Survivors include her husband, Edward S. Denton Sr.; two sons, E. Selden Denton Jr. and R. Scott Denton Sr. and wife, Debra; her daughter, Robin D. and husband, Mike May; two brothers, E. Berkley Pitts and wife, Janice, R. Bernard Pitts and wife, Linda; a sister, Evelyn and husband, Norman Goodman; nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren. Remains rest at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd., where family will receive friends 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, and where services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 11. Interment Westhampton Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts to Mt. Vernon Baptist Church Building Fund, 11220 Nuckols Road, Glen Allen, Va. 23059.

Frank D. Fordham of 12 E. Broad Rock Rd. departed this life Friday, April 6, 2001. He is survived by four sons, William F., Andre and Keith Fordham and Warren Allen; five daughters, Dr. Barbara Taylor Harris, Gloria Brown, Pamela, Beverly, and Adrienne Fordham; three stepdaughters, Tyranne Kennard, Faith Reese and Octavia Brown; one sister, Fannie Vereen of Ocala, Fla.; 24 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter; one daughter-in-law, Pamela Fordman; two sons-in-law, George Harris and John Brown; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins and other relatives and friends; one devoted, Matthew Lane. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Sts., where funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 11 at 1 p.m., Bishop John Harris Sr. officiating. Interment Maury Cemetery. Relatives and friends attending funeral service assemble at the funeral home Wednesday, 12:30 p.m.

GEE
Robert L. Gee of Richmond departed this life suddenly April 8, 2001. Services to be announced.

GRIMWOOD
David N. Grimwood, of Richmond, died Friday, April 6, after a long, brave struggle with prostate cancer. David Grimwood was born on a farm in Madison County, Ala., on January 22, 1920. He and his six brothers and sisters and their widowed mother flourished as a family despite personal adversity and the Great Depression. He attended Berea College from 1938 to 1942. Upon graduation with a B.S. in agriculture, he entered the Army Air Corps, training as a B-24 pilot. He married Eleanor Ruth Eakin on July 3, 1943, in Albany, Ga., where he was stationed. In 1944, he flew 25 combat missions out of San Giovanni Airfield in Foggia, Italy. Upon returning to the states, he served as flight instructor before receiving an honorable discharge in 1945. That same year he began a 35 year career with the Soil Conservation Service. In Kentucky he worked in Stanford, Danville, Paris, and Lexington, helping landowners implement terraces, waterways, ponds, crop plans, and other conservation measures. Promoted into administrative responsibilities, he moved to Syracuse, New York in 1961, to Burlington, Vermont in 1964, and to Richmond, Va. in 1967. As State Conservationist in Vermont and Virginia, he helped to coordinate local, state, and federal efforts to maintain and improve the natural resources of those states. Since 1980, he has enjoyed an active retirement in Richmond. He loved gardening, traveling, photography, fishing, reading, walking, and water aerobics. He loved to spend time with his wife, his sons, and daughters-in-law, his granddaughter, and a wide array of friends and relatives. David Grimwood fought for freedom during the war and for the welfare of his family and community during peace. He had a green thumb for plants and for people. He loved a good joke, he told a good story. He was a loving husband, an exemplary father, a doting grandfather, a generous friend, and an engaged citizen. His presence endures in a hundred landscapes and a thousand hearts. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Eleanor Eakin Grimwood; by his sons, Howard and Michael, and their wives, Carol and Linda; by his granddaughter, Miranda; by his sister, Martha Shinkle of Meridianville, Ala.; and by numerous nephews and nieces. The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 10, at Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., Richmond. A memorial service will occur at the same place at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 11. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to the American Cancer Society, 4240 Park Place Court, Glen Allen, Va. 23060 or to the Berea College Development Fund, Berea College, Berea, Ky. 40404.

HURT
Gordon B. Hurt Sr., 73, passed away at his home after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was the owner and operator of Country Club Servicenter until his retirement 10 years ago. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Dorothy L. Hurt; one son, Gordon B. Hurt Jr. and wife, Diane of Cumberland, Va.; two daughters, Ann Nelson of Keysville, Pat Bradley and husband, Mike of Ashland, Va.; one granddaughter, Melissa Nelson of Keysville; four grandsons, Don and John Nelson of Keysville, and Mitchell and Matthew Bradley of Ashland; two sisters, Lucille Anderson of Victoria and Edna Ball of Richmond. Also left to miss his love and life are Roberta Rivers, a devoted niece; and Betty Graves, a devoted friend, both of Richmond. The family will receive friends at the Browning Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Tussekiah Baptist Church, with interment in the church cemetery. Donations may be made to Hospice of Central Virginia, 202 Clark St., Farmville, Va. 23901, Charlotte County Rescue Squad or your favorite charity.

JENKINS
Juanita Mann Jenkins of Mechanicsville, widow of Charles Ryland Jenkins, died Monday, April 9, 2001. She was the daughter of the late James S.F. and Linda White Mann. Immediate survivors include her brothers, W.H. Mann and F.D. Mann; and her sisters, June Huntley, Linda Ronna and Marjorie Eubank; many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Jenkins was retired from the former State Planters Bank, and was a member of Mechanicsville Baptist Church. The family will receive friends 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee Davis Rd., where services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. Interment Walnut Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Mechanicsville Baptist Church, 1518 Atlee Rd., or the East Hanover Rescue Squad.
