Lucille C. Martin
Lucille Carter Martin, 91, of 810 Stoney Mountain Road, Martinsville, died Tuesday, July 29, 2003, at Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Martinsville.
A native of Madison, N.C., she was born on Feb. 26, 1912, a daughter of the late Lizzie Draper. Also preceding her in death were her husband, David Martin; three brothers, Joe Richard Martin, David Lee Martin and Thomas Martin; and a sister, Josephine Butler.
She retired as a housekeeper at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County, where she worked for many years. She was a a member of Pilgrim Baptist Church and its usher board.
Surviving are two sons, McArthur Martin of Richmond and Jerome Martin of Atlanta; one daughter, Gloria Hightower of Martinsville; 17 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hairston Funeral Home with Elder Shantae Younger presiding. Burial will follow in Carver Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends a half hour prior to the funeral Saturday and other times at the home of her daughter, Gloria Hightower, 810 Stoney Mountain Road, Martinsville.

Kathlyn M. Mitchell
Kathlyn Gaynell "Gay" Meeks Mitchell, 87, of 527 Harrison St., Martinsville, died Tuesday, July 29, 2003.
A native of Spray, N.C., she was born Nov. 18, 1915, a daughter of the late William Morris Meeks and Elizabeth Saunders Meeks. In addition, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Kerr Mitchell Jr.; a sister, Elizabeth M. Martin; and two brothers, John W. and Ted Meeks.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Martinsville; a charter member of Fairlawn Garden Club; and a member of Chatham Heights Home Demonstration Club.
Surviving are three daughters, Shirley Ann M. Sutphin of Fairfax, Mary Elizabeth M. Warren of Martinsville and Kathlyn Gaynell M. Foster of Dixfield, Maine; four sons, Robert Kerr Mitchell III of St. Augustine, Fla., William Edward Mitchell and Jack Terrell Mitchell, both of Richmond, and Thomas Franklin Mitchell of Harrisonburg; one sister, Nancy M. Willis of Eden, N.C.; three brothers, Andrew T. Meeks, Richard T. Meeks and Jerry L. Meeks, all of Eden; 22 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church of Martinsville with the Rev. Ron Mateer presiding. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Norris Funeral Services from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday and other times at the residence.

Inez W. Stultz
The funeral for Inez Whitten Stultz, 80, of Florida, who died July 24, 2003, was held Wednesday at Fieldale Baptist Church with the Rev. Richard Harrison officiating. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery.
Pallbearers were David Stultz, Brian Stultz, Tom Goller, Bob Goller, Jimmy Mitchell, Mike Mitchell and John Walker.
Arrangements were by Norris Funeral Services and Crematory.

Thelma Y. Smith
ROCKY MOUNT -- The funeral for Thelma Young Smith, 78, of Rocky Mount, who died July 29, 2003, in a Roanoke hospital, will be held at 11 a.m. today at Flora Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Hamilton Harper officiating. Burial will follow in the Ratcliff family cemetery.
In addition to her parents, John and Iowa Young, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Paul Young; two sons, Eugene Young and Clyde Young; a daughter, Shelia Young; and several brothers and sisters.
Survivors include her husband, Allison F. Smith; her children, Ralph Young, James Young, Jearl Young and Tammy Blankenship, all of Rocky Mount; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and other relatives, including a number in Henry County.

Ralph E. Thomasson
Ralph Engles Thomasson, 73, of Pensacola, Fla., and formerly of Henry County, died July 27, 2003.
He was born in Henry County and graduated from Fieldale High School.
Preceding him in death were his father, Robert Lee Thomasson; a brother, Clyde Thomasson; and a son, Ralph Thomasson Jr.
Surviving are his mother, Nannie Thomasson of Collinsville; his wife, Shirley Joyce Thomasson of Pensacola; one daughter, Pam Thomasson of Crestview, Fla.; one brother, J.T. Thomasson of Pensacola; and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Eastern Gate Funeral Home in Pensacola, with burial to follow in the Pensacola Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. today.
A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church of Collinsville at 3 p.m. Sunday.

Betty A. Broaddus
A graveside funeral for Betty Anne Broaddus, 73, of 1212 Mulberry Road, Martinsville, who died Sept. 28, 2003, was held Tuesday at Oakwood Cemetery. The Rev. John Fulcher officiated.
Pallbearers were James Crowder, Dr. Philip Sprinkle, Jay Frith, James ÒNubbyÓ Coleman, Sam Fowler and Lynwood Wells.
McKee-Stone Funeral Services was in charge of arrangements.

Elder Leonard J. Corns
Elder Leonard Jackson Corns, 83, of Patrick Springs, died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2003, at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center.
Born Dec. 22, 1919, in Mayodan, N.C., he was a son of the late Elijah L. and Elva Lawrence Corns. He also was preceded in death by a brother, E.L. Corns.
A longtime Primitive Baptist minister, he had served as pastor of several churches for 50 years. His circuit included Old Spoon Creek Primitive Baptist Church, Martinsville Primitive Baptist Church and Old Fellowship Primitive Baptist Church in Carroll County. He was a member of the Martinsville Primitive Baptist Church. In addition, he had held a radio ministry on WHEO in Stuart for 38 years.
Surviving are his wife, Catherine Dillon Corns of the home; five daughters, Evelyn Rakes of Woolwine, Julia Tilley of Lottsburg, Va., Ernestine Goad of Hillsville, Jerlene Tilley of Stuart and Pamela Goforth of Collinsville; one son, L.J. Corns Jr. of Archer, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Doris Joyce of Burlington, N.C. and Jane Ferris of Danville.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Elders Thomas Radford and David Hawks officiating. Burial will follow in Old Spoon Creek Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.
Visitation was held Tuesday night at Moody Funeral Home.

Willie Gordon
EDEN, N.C. -- Willie Gordon, 84, of 254 Country Club Drive, Eden, died Sept. 27, 2003, at Morehead Nursing Center.
He was born in Selma, Ala., to the late Billie and Rosie Crumb Gordon.
A World War II Army veteran, he retired from the Veterans Hospital in Atlanta, Ga.. He was a member of Agape Christian Fellowship in Martinsville Va.
Surviving are his wife, Lillie Manns Gordon, and other relatives.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Perry-Spencer Funeral Home in Madison. Burial will follow in Lakeview Memorial Park in Greensboro.
The family will receive friends from 12:30-1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Hazel H. Hailey
The funeral for Hazel Christine H. Hailey, 92, of 300 Blue Ridge Street, formerly of 802 Second St., Martinsville, who died Sept. 26, 2003, was held Tuesday at Grace Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Irving Simon officiating. Burial was in Carver Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were Keith Hylton, Kenneth Carter, Anthony Mitchell, Timothy Mitchell, Elli Mitchell and Rayford Mitchell.
Hines Funeral Services was in charge of arrangements.

Rosie L. Hooker
The family of Rosie Lee Hooker of Bassett, will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Bassett Funeral Service.
Hooker, 88, died Monday, Sept. 29, 2003 at R.J. Reynolds Patrick Memorial Hospital in Stuart.
Her survivors will be listed in Thursday's obituary.
