Commercial's character
Rebecca Porter dead at 87
Rebecca Porter, 87, of 709 Smith Road, Martinsville, died Sunday of heart failure at the age of 87.
"She was a character in more ways than one," said her nephew, Tony Millner. She became well known locally for her role in commercials that she made for her nephew, a bail bondsman, and other businesses.
Porter, a school dropout at a young age, became a champion of education when at age 56 she acquired a GED through Henry County School's Adult Learning Center. Because of her ability to inspire young people, she was given a job teaching the detention class at Albert Harris School. She later worked as a school crossing guard for city schools, said Millner.
Even in her 80s, she refused to retire. She had continued to "hold down the office" at her nephew's business, reporting for work on the dot of 9 a.m. and staying late in the evenings if need be; with the exception of church services at Mount Sinai Apostolic Church, where she had been a member for many years, Millner said.
Funeral arrangements were incomplete and will be announced by Hairston Funeral Home.

She was a charter member and the oldest member of Valley Drive Baptist Church.

Barker of Fieldale; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Collins Funeral Chapel in Bassett with the Rev. Bobby Rakes officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park.
