PRENTISS
Deacon Ruffin M. Prentiss Sr., of Charles City, departed this life July 15, 2001. He is survived by his devoted wife, Marguerite; daughter, JoAnne Crawley, of Charles City and husband, Lorenzo; son, Ruffin Prentiss Jr. of Richmond, and wife, Delcenia; three grandsons, Vaughan Crawley, Ruffin III and Landon Prentiss; granddaughter-in-law, Crystal Crawley, great-grandson, Jordon Crawley; four sisters, Bessie Dennis, Maude Roberts, Viola Brown and Lillian Lee, all of New York; two brothers, Robert and Roger Prentiss, of Richmond; a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. Remains rest at J. Leroy Charity Funeral Home, Charles City. At 11 a.m. Thursday, Mr. Prentiss will rest at St. John Baptist Church where services will be held 1 p.m. Rev. Eddie L. Perry officiating. Interment church cemetery.

PUTNEY
Marc Alexander Putney, 18, died suddenly Sunday, July 15, 2001. He was the son of Rebecca M. Rowsey and Robert M. Putney; brother of Scott M. Putney; grandson of Eva M. Rowsey and the late Robert M. Rowsey Jr.; also grandson of Ms. Lucy Turlington and Mrs. Rebecca G. Putney and the late George W. Putney. Marc was a 2001 graduate of New Kent High School and leaves behind numerous family and friends.Funeral services will be conducted at 2 PM Wednesday (today) at Four Mile Creek Baptist Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the New Kent High School Athletic Dept., P.O. Box 130, New Kent, Va. 23124 or to your favorite charity. Nelsen Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

SANDERSON
Mrs. Sara B. Sanderson, 91, of Richmond died July 16, 2001. She was born September 9, 1909, a daughter of the late George Frank Baylor Sr. and Agnes Crawford Baylor. She was preceded in death by her husband, Whitmel F. Sanderson Sr. Survivors include her children, Caroline S. Pace of Birmingham, Alabama, Hannah S. Dolan and her husband, John Michael of Richmond, Whitmel F. Sanderson Jr. and his wife, Peggy of Chesapeake City, Md.; sister, Frances Caroline Harper of Richmond; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was a 1933 graduate of Johnston-Willis School of Nursing and was one of the first members of Stratford Hills United Methodist Church. Family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Woody's Funeral Home, Parham Chapel, 1771 Parham Road. A service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 19 at Woody's Funeral Home. Interment, Westhampton Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Stratford Hills United Methodist Church, 7740 Cherokee Rd., Richmond, Va. 23225-1134.

VAUGHAN
Louise Darden Vaughan, 85, of 135 Country Club Road, Franklin, died Tuesday, July 17, 2001 at home. Born in Southampton County, she was the daughter of the late Hunter and Sallie Lankford Darden and the widow of H. Cecil Vaughan. She was a lifetime member of Sycamore Baptist Church, teacher of first and second grade Sunday school for over 50 years and clerk of the church for 26 years. She was a member of the Smiths Ferry Home Demonstration Club. She is survived by two daughters, Martha Barnes and her husband, Jim of Franklin and Barbara Vaughan of Midlothian; two granddaughters, Rebecca Theuer and her husband, Steve of Richmond and Anne Eason and her husband, Paul of Chesapeake; four great-grandchildren, Catherine, Emily and William Theuer and Cole Eason. She is also survived by one sister, Dorothy Cotton; and three brothers, Hunter Darden Jr. and his wife, Jean, Thomas I. Darden and Charles B. Darden Sr. and his wife, Lucy, all of Franklin; two sisters-in-law, Pearl Darden of Franklin and Mary Frances V. Marshall of Richmond; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Harvey Darden. The funeral will be conducted Friday at 3 p.m. at Sycamore Baptist Church. Burial will be in Poplar Spring Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home. Memorial donations may be made to Gifts and Memorials of Sycamore Baptist Church, 31120 Sycamore Church Road, Franklin, Va. 23851. Wright Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Elnorist L. White, of 1403 Garber St, died July 17, 2001. Remains rest at Scotts Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Blvd. Funeral notice later.

WILLIAMS
Mrs. Ethel Annette Williams, 1695 Bracketts Bend Rd., departed this life Wednesday, July 11, 2001. She leaves to cherish her fondest memories her devoted husband, Elder Sheldon Williams Sr.; five sons, Ervette, Eric, Everette, Edwin, and Sheldon Williams Jr.; one sister, Rosa Jackson; four brothers, Edward and Edwin Keel, Albert McCrae Jr., and Tim McDuffie; father, Albert McCrae Sr.; three daughters-in-law, Joanne, Latoya and Rhonda Williams; and a host of sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Funeral services will be held Thursday, 11 a.m. from Temple of Hope C.O.G.I.C. (Home of Redeem), 5601 Bryce Lane, Elder Willie Weatherspoon, pastor, Elder Melvin Rouse officiating. Remains will lie in state 10 a.m. until hour of service. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery. Family and friends kindly assemble at the church at 10:30 a.m.

Jeannie M. Young, 58, of Mechanicsville, daughter of the late, Henry Allen and Mamie Young, died Sunday, July 15, 2001. She is survived by two brothers, Allen L. Young, of Mechanicsville and Henry V. Young, of Rockville, Va. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Atlee Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 301 & Shady Grove Rd., Mechanicsville where a funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 18, 2001. Interment 3 p.m. Wednesday in Bethlehem Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Charlotte Court House, Va. In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be made to the Hanover Association for Retarded Citizens.

ALLEN
Eliza Cornelia Knott Allen, 87, widow of John Pitkin Allen Sr. died June 21, 2001. She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Allen Wright, her daughter and son-in-law, Nancy Allen Perrow and Robert Perrow of Richmond; and her son and daughter-in-law, John Pitkin Allen Jr. and Glendine Allen of Powhatan; her grandchildren, Rebekah Eliza Wright of Sherman Oaks, Calif., Jennifer Perrow Whitlock, Peter Wright, Julia Lindsey Perrow, and Phillip Dean Perrow, and her great-granddaughter, Sydney Grace Whitlock, all of Richmond; her brother, Sidney Minor Knott Jr., of Raleigh, N.C.; also a cousin, The Reverend Rufus J. Womble, of Richmond; as well as nieces and nephews. She was born in Raleigh, N.C., and attended Meridith College. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, June 26, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 12291 River Road. Gertrude J. (Lamothe) Alves, 74, of Westport, Mass., died Sunday, June 24, 2001. She was the widow of Arthur Alves; mother of Bruce of Richmond, Va., Barry of Rumford, R.I., Brian of Alexandria, Va., Bradford of Westport and Brett Alves of Newton; a daughter, Nancy Green of Barnstable, Mass.; sister, Florence Medeiros; brother, Roger Lamothe; and six grandchildren. Funeral Wednesday at 9 a.m. from Auclair Funeral Home, 690 S. Main St., Fall River, Mass. ARMSTRONG
Charles Torrence Armstrong, 55, prominent attorney and a 28 year resident of Alexandria, died of a heart attack on June 23, 2001 in Slanesville, West Virginia. He was the son of the late Dr. George Rankin Armstrong and the late Elizabeth Allison Torrence Armstrong of Charlotte, N.C. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Charlsie; a son, Charlie, a 2000 graduate of the University of Virginia; a daughter, Catherine, Yale University Class of 2002; and his sister, Allison of Charlotte, N.C. "Torrey" was born in Charlotte in 1945. He graduated from the Episcopal High School in Alexandria in 1963, and from Washington and Lee University in 1970, where he was a member of Kappa Alpha. He was a Lieutenant J.G. in the U.S.Navy, and a member of the Naval Reserves. He obtained his Law degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1973. Mr. Armstrong joined the law firm of Boothie, Prichard and Dudley in Alexandria in 1973, and was the Senior Litigation partner in the Tysons Corner office of the successor firm, McGuire Woods, LLP, at the time of his death. He had an active trial practice, in particular in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. He was president of that court's Federal Bar Association Chapter in 1999. Long a leader of the Bar, Torrey was president of the Alexandria Bar Association in 1983. He was a member of the Virginia State Bar Council 1985-1991, and president of the Antitrust Section in 1988. He was a frequent Author and lecturer for continuing legal education courses. He was an acknowledged expert in antiturst, franchising and business torts. An avid sportsman and outdoorsman, Torrey completed several Marine Corps marathons. He was an enthusiastic member of Alexandria Community Rowing in Old Town. Torrey was a founding Director and President of the Ice Mountain Homeowners' Association in West Virginia, where he and his family had a second home. A loving son, husband, and father, Torrey will be missed by all who knew and loved him. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Episcopal High School, 1200 N. Quaker Ln., Alexandria, Va. 22302, or to Alexandria Community Rowing, P.O. Box 16431, Alexandria, Va. 22302. A memorial service will be held at Episcopal High School, 1200 N. BARNETT
Joan Elizabeth Campbell Barnett died June 22, 2001 at St. Mary's Hospital. She is survived by her husband, Robert A. Barnett; daughter, Lisa B. Kern; son, Colin Campbell Barnett; and sister, Nancy C. Schell; four grandchildren; and numerous other relatives. She was born on May 9, 1930 and raised in San Jose, Calif. She graduated from the University of Calif. at Berkley (B.A.), Princeton Theological Seminary (MRE.) and taught at elementary levels in N.J., Va., Iowa, and N.Y.; in middle schools in Hopewell, Va.; was Director of Christian Edu. in Storm Lake, Iowa; founded chapters of AAUW in N.Y. and Chesterfield Co.; was an Elder in the Presbyterian Church USA and active in the Chester Presbyterian Church, was a Stephen Minister, and helped serve Holy Communion; member of two bridge clubs, enjoyed especially since retirement traveling in Europe in Elderhostle Programs and others, a wonderful wife, mother, sister, and close friend to many. A memorial service will be held at Chester Presbyterian Church at 3 p.m. on Monday, July 2, 2001. A reception will follow provided by the Stephen Ministers. Memorial donations should be given to the Chester Church's New Organ Fund. Shalom.

BATES
Stanley W. Bates of Chase City, formerly of Richmond, died June 22, 2001. Surviving are his wife, Virginia Bates; five daughters, Janice Bates, Paulette Wallace and Doris Powell of Richmond, Va., Ashley and Andrea Bates of Chase City; five sons, Stanley Bates Jr. of Philadelphia, Pa., James Powell of North Carolina, Milton Powell and Thurman McFail of Richmond, Va., and Christopher Bates of Chase City; 15 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; four sisters, Edna Hope, Beatrice Shelton, Eugenia (Jean) Bates and Esther Ross, all of Goochland, Va.; mother-in-law (aunt), Lillie Goode; one aunt, one uncle; one daughter-in-law, Celeste McFail; one son-in-law, Burnett Wallace Jr.; four brothers-in-law, six sisters-in-law, a host of nieces, other relatives and friends. His remains rest at Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. BERNHARD
Dr. Alfred H. Bernhard, osteopathic physician, died June 20, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Jane Patterson Bernhard; sister-in-law, Mrs. Katherine Cromley of Raleigh, N.C.; niece, Kit Boney and her husband, Dan of Raleigh; nephews, Wilhelm K. Bernhard and his wife, Alice of Louisville, Ky. and Rand Bernhard and his wife, Susan of Richmond; great-nieces and nephews and many devoted friends and loved ones. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave. Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Monday in Hollywood Cemetery.

BROOKS
Ruth Anne "Booty" Brooks died June 23, 2001 at her home; the cause of death was cancer. Born in Columbus, Ohio, she was a long-time resident of Richmond and a strong advocate for education and school libraries. Mrs. Brooks was an active volunteer in numerous political campaigns, and a staff member in the administration of Governors Robb and Baliles. Appointed by Governor Robb and reappointed by Governor Baliles, she served on the Board of the Library of Virginia, many years on the Library of Virginia Foundation Board and was very active with the Friends of the Archives. In a resolution passed by the Board it was stated: "She is a tireless advocate for the Preservation and primacy of the Library's priceless archival collection...We recognize Ruth Anne Brooks for her thoughtful leadership on the Library Board and for her unwavering service to the Commonwealth." Mrs. Brooks was a member of the Democrat Club of Metropolitan Richmond, formerly the Democratic Woman's Club, and The Woman's Club. She is survived by her daughters, Anne Brooks West of Richmond and Katherine "Kathy" Reed Brooks of New York; son, Edwin B. Brooks III; his wife, Allison Demarest; and grandson, Edwin Demarest Brooks of Mt. Airy, Md. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Library of Virginia Foundation, 800 E. Broad St. 23219, the Richmond City Library Foundation, 101 E. Franklin St., 23219 or the charity of your choice. A memorial service will be held at the Library of Virginia on a date to be scheduled.

CHITTUM
Evelyn Lucille Chittum, 72, of Richmond, died June 23, 2001. She is survived by husband, Carl Chittum; brother, Robert Garrett; sister, Lillian Bulifant; four stepchildren, Warren, Carl Jr., Carol and Rita; many nieces and nephews. Her remains rests at the Bliley Funeral Homes' Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 Sunday and Monday, and where funeral services will be held 12:30 p.m. Tuesday. Interment Oakwood Cemetery.

COCHRAN
LuEllen Piercy Cochran, gone to be with Jesus, June 22, 2001. Mrs. Cochran was preceded in death by her parents, W.C. and Modena Piercy; and her son, Morgan E. Swindell. She is survived by her devoted husband of 25 years, Jimmy; three sons, Shane Swindell of Florida, James R. Cochran Jr. of Georgia and Eric Cochran of Ashland, Va.; two daughters, Charlu Wade of Richmond, Va. and Shana Gonzales of California; 14 grandchildren; a brother, Ronnie Piercy of North Carolina; and four sisters, Joanne Herrin and Sandra Morgan of North Carolina, Faye George and Collotta Suggs of Virginia. A family viewing will be held at Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel on Tuesday 9 to 11 a.m. Mrs. Cochran will be laid to rest at Lyles Baptist Church Cemetery in Wilmington, Va. on Tuesday at 12:30 p.m.

COPPIT
George Lee Coppit Jr., LTC U.S. Army (Ret.), 56, of Chester, died June 23, 2001 in Chippenham Medical Center. Col. Coppit was born in Newport, R.I., was a graduate of the University of Rhode Island (1968) and the Florida Institute of Technology. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, was a veteran of the Vietname War and a member of the Retired Officers Association. Preceded in death by his wife, Mary S. Coppit, he is survived by four children, Dr. George L. Coppit and daughter-in-law, Jennifer of Savannah, Ga., Catherine M. Minter and son-in-law, Tony of Chester, Kelly M. Schoot and son-in-law, Jamie of Colonial Heights and William J. Coppit of Chester; four grandchildren, Trevor and Ashley Schoot, Chloe and Zachary Coppit; his mother and father, Athena (Bobby) Coppit and George Lee Coppit of Newport, R.I.; a sister, Janie Raffa of Newport; and four nieces and one nephew. A Mass of the Resurrection will be offered at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 27 in St. Augustine Catholic Church, 4400 Beulah Rd. by Msgr. Michael Schmied. The interment with full military honors will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Chester, Va. The family will receive friends at the Chesterfield Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, 3050 W. Hundred Rd. on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. The family suggests memorial contributions in his name to the American Diabetes Association, 530 E. Main St., Richmond, Va. 23219 or the charity of your choice.
