Harriet Grandis
Jul 16, 2001
Harriet Gumenick Grandis liked to help people who were less fortunate. For the last 10 years, she and her husband, Harry, had contributed tuition for three medical students at the Virginia Commonwealth University/Medical College School of Medicine.
They also created scholarships at the University of Richmond for residents of the Virginia Home for Boys.
Mrs. Grandis died Sunday after a brief illness following surgery in a local hospital. She was 78.
Mrs. Grandis "really got a charge out of the students that got scholarships - especially the doctors," said her daughter, Nancy White of Naples, Fla., and Richmond.
"She enjoyed meeting and knowing them and seeing how they were doing."
In May 2000, VCU awarded Mrs. Grandis, along with her husband, its Edward A. Wayne Medal, given for outstanding contributions to society through humanitarianism, science, art and public service.
A Baltimore native who grew up in Richmond, she attended Richmond Professional Institute, now part of VCU, and married in 1943. She was an airplane spotter during World War II.
During the 1980s, supporters of the Richmond Children's Museum appealed to her for financial aid to help get the museum started. "Mother and father thought the museum was a really good idea," Mrs. White said. "It was in a building on Navy Hill that they were salvaging and painting and putting together. There was no money for a staff or a director. Mother decided to finance it and got it off the ground."
Mrs. Grandis was a director emeritus of the museum.
Mrs. Grandis also lent her energy to numerous civic groups, including the Jewish Community Federation's Campaign for Operation Exodus, designed to help Russian Jews leave Russia. She served as an honorary co-chairman of the project, helping to meet its $2 million goal.
She was a sponsor of the Harry and Harriet Grandis Behavior Department at Meir Hospital in Kfar Saba, Israel.
Mrs. Grandis had served on the boards of Jewish Family Services, Congregation Beth Ahabah Sisterhood and the Medical College of Virginia Hospitals Hospitality House.
She was a member of the Massey Cancer Center Club.
Survivors, in addition to her husband and daughter, include two other daughters, Linda Blatt of Morristown, N.J., and Betty Sue LePage of Richmond; her mother, Sophie Gumenick of Miami Beach, Fla.; and a brother, Jerome Gumenick of Richmond.
A funeral will be Tuesday at noon at Congregation Beth Ahabah, 1111 W. Franklin St. Burial will be in Hebrew Cemetery.
