Callom Hunter Jones
Oct 20, 2001
Few Ashland residents have contributed more to the life of the community than Callom Hunter Jones, a former member of the town council who served one term as the town's mayor in the 1960s.
"Small towns that flourish do so because of people who keep the fabric of the community tight. Hunter was one who kept the fabric of Ashland tight," said Jay Pace, editor and publisher of The Herald-Progress, a Hanover County newspaper.
Mr. Jones, a certified public accountant and retired senior partner of the Richmond firm Mitchell, Wiggins & Co., died this week at his home in Ashland. He was 82.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Ashland Christian Church, where Mr. Jones was an elder and trustee.
Mr. Jones will be remembered by Ashlanders as a man who gave a generous amount of his time, talent and money to a variety of projects and organizations in the community.
"Hunter unquestionably was one of the real givers in this town," Pace said. "I don't think I ever heard him say no to anybody."
Mr. Jones, an Ashland native whose father once served as the town's mayor, was a 1939 graduate of Randolph-Macon College and one of the college's most loyal alumni. He served on the college's board of trustees from 1975 until 1994, when he was elected Trustee Emeritus. He played a key role in fund-raising campaigns and was active with the Society of Alumni, which presented him the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1992.
For nearly 40 years, he taught an accounting course at the college at night. The course was open to both students and town residents.
"Hunter shared his accounting skills with this community," said Pace. "Who knows how many people were influenced by that service."
A World War II veteran who served with the U.S. Army in both the European and Pacific Theaters, Mr. Jones was a former commander of American Legion Post 206 in Ashland. He was active with many civic and social organizations, including the Downtown Club of Richmond, Hanover Country Club and the Patrick Henry YMCA, which he had helped to establish.
His family owns Sally Bell's Kitchen, a Richmond fixture since 1924 that specializes in box lunches and baked goods. Several years ago, the business found itself in a legal fight with the city of Richmond over the 5 percent city meal tax. The city claimed Sally Bell's owed about $56,000 in back taxes. The dispute was settled out of court.
Mr. Jones is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marcyne O. Jones; two daughters, Sandra Jones Lynne and Sarah Jones Byrne; and three sons, Stephen H. Jones, Scott W. Jones and Stuart B. Jones.

John Thomas Rice
Aug 06, 2003
John Thomas Rice, a champion of women's education who served as an administrator for numerous area colleges and high schools, died Sunday after a lengthy bout with cancer. He was 64.
"He was a scholar who felt like women's education was a very important thing," said his wife of 43 years, Grace Arendall Rice. "He was a grand administrator, but his heart was always in the classroom with the student."
Mr. Rice, who lived in Staunton, began his education career as the first dean of men at James Madison University in 1966, when enrollment was about 2,000 women and 125 men. When he left the post in 1970, the school had 3,001 women and 815 men.
After leaving James Madison, Mr. Rice become the first president of the combined St. Anne's/Belfield School in Charlottesville and held that position until 1972.
He then served as dean of student affairs at Sweet Briar College from 1974 to 1976.
In 1976, Mr. Rice became the 10th president of St. Mary's College in Raleigh, N.C. During his 10 years at the helm, the school experienced burgeoning enrollment, rising academic stands and financial success.
He was also vice president for institutional advancement at Mary Baldwin College from 1986 to 1990.
He served as executive director of the University of Virginia's Curry School of Education Foundation from 1993 to 1996. In the position, he served as chief fund-raiser for the Curry School.
He was a governor of St. Margaret's School in Tappahannock and a former board member of the Woodrow Wilson Birthplace and Foundation, the Valley Mission Inc. and the Salvation Army.
Most recently, Mr. Rice had supervised fund raising, public relations and financial management as vice president of ministry relations for Wingfield Ministries Inc.
Mr. Rice's son, Robert Coleman Rice of Los Angeles, said his father's passion for education stemmed from the strong women in his family.
Mr. Rice's grandmother was an original faculty member at Madison College, which later became James Madison University.
"Dad was involved with very strong female educators since birth," his son said. "It was something he was destined to do. It wasn't a 9-to-5 job; it was really a calling."
A Wilmington, Del., native, Mr. Rice earned a bachelor's degree in 1961 from Virginia Tech, where he was president of his class. He earned his master of arts degree in sociology from the University of Tennessee in 1963.
He was awarded honorary doctorates by the Protestant Episcopal Theological Seminary in Virginia in Alexandria and St. Augustine's College in Raleigh, N.C.
He served two years of active duty and four years of reserve duty with the Army.
Mr. Rice was a vestryman and lay reader at Trinity Episcopal Church in Staunton.
He was the son of W. Thomas Rice of Richmond, a railroad executive who was chairman of the Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac Railroad and its parent company, Seaboard Coast Line Industries, and who helped engineer the merger that created CSX.
In addition to his wife, son and father, survivors include another son, W. Thomas Rice II of Alexandria; two daughters, Sarah Shelton of Los Angeles, and Anne Putnam of Charlotte, N.C.; a sister, Jaqueline Rice Heard of Potomac, Md.; and nine grandchildren.
