BUDKE
Nell Juliet Budke, 90, died Thursday, May 24, 2001, at Southside Regional Medical Center. A native of Jackson, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late Horace and Nell Jean Jenkins Frasher and the widow of Earl H. Budke Sr. She is survived by her son, Earl H. Budke Jr.; and a brother, William Horace Frasher. A private graveside service will be held in Jackson, Tenn. Arrangements by the E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, Colonial Heights.

CAMPBELL
Elgin Reid Campbell of Richmond died May 24, 2001 after a lengthy battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, Nellie Edwards Campbell; daughter, Lisa Campbell; son, Bruce Campbell and his wife, Carole of Hopewell; brother, William Campbell of Charleston, W.Va. He was retired from the U.S. Navy, having been a hospital corpsman, dental technician and achieved the final rank of petty officer first class. He was retired from Bellwood DGSC in 1997 and a member of Bon Air Baptist Church. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday. Interment Dale Memorial Park.

CHANDLER
James David Chandler passed away on May 20, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Fredericka; daughter, Grace C. Barbour (Joseph Jr.); grandchildren, Eileen, Joseph III, Janella, Matthew and Daniel Barbour; brother, Coleman B. Chandler (Julia); sister, Catherine Holman (Dallas); nieces and one nephew, other relatives and caring friends. Remains rest at Walter J. Manning Funeral Home, 700 N. 25th St. Remains will lie in state Saturday, 12 noon at Mosby Memorial Baptist Church, Mechanicsville Turnpike and Watts Lane, where funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Rev. Barry Young officiating. Burial Quantico National Cemetery Tuesday, 11 a.m.

CHUMNEY
Nancy Smith Chumney, 84, of Richmond, widow of R. Douglas Chumney Sr., died May 23, 2001. She is survived by a daughter and her husband, Joan and Jim Gibson of Glen Allen; and a son and his wife, Richard and Vera Chumney of Mechanicsville; a brother and sister-in-law, Sonny and Peggy Smith of Sandston; four grandsons, Robert Gibson, Kirk, Craig and Marc Chumney; and three great-grandsons, Trent, Richard and Ryder Chumney. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

DAVIS
Louis R. Davis Jr., 73, passed away May 24, 2001. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel P. Davis. He is survived by his daughters, Carolyn D. Berry and Edna M. Davis of Chelsey, Maine; his sons, Danny L. and Dennis W. Davis; granddaughter, Patricia Martin; grandson, David Berry; great-grandchildren, Stephanie, Brittany and Amber Martin, and Katherine Berry; stepmother, Bessie Davis; and stepsister, Brenda Murphy. He was retired from Allied Signal, a veteran of the Korean War, and was a member of Masonic Lodge #161. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday at the Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. (Rt. 10). Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Branch's Baptist Church Cemetery. Mrs. Dorothy Davis of Richmond departed this life Thursday, May 24, 2001. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Sts. Funeral notice later.

EVANS
Departed this life May 20, 2001, Mrs. Pinkie M. Evans of 4906 Greenleigh Rd. She was preceded in death by a son, Roger Evans. She is survived by four sons, Clarence, Robert and Calvin Evans, and Nathaniel Dixon; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Edgar Richardson; two sisters, Anna Richardson and Gladys Dixon; a host of nieces and nephews, two daughters-in-law, other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Walter J. Manning Funeral Home, 700 N. 25th St., where the family will receive friends Friday, 7 to 8 p.m., and where funeral services will be held Saturday, 11 a.m. Rev. GILBERT
Harry Harwood Gilbert Sr., 60, of Chester, passed away Wednesday, May 23, 2001. Mr. Gilbert was Business Agent for IUEC Local 51 for 21 years until 1997. At the time of his death he was the National Coordinator for the Elevator Industry Work Preservation Fund and First Vice President of the IUEC. He was past secretary/treasurer of the Virginia State Building Trades. He is survived by his wife, Linda; his three sons, Tony Gilbert and wife, Cindy, Rusty Gilbert and wife, Lucy, and Jason Gilbert; three daughters, Tina Faison and husband, Bruce, Amy Wellons and husband, Al, Kim Alexander and husband, Ken; a brother, Charles Gilbert and wife, Marty; and 11 grandchildren. A graveside funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, May 25, in Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the Chesterfield Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, 3050 W. Hundred Rd. tonight, Thursday, from 7 to 9 p.m.

GRUBBS
Thomas "Tommy" Grubbs Sr., 81, of Richmond, died May 23, 2001. He was the widower of Inez Grubbs. He is survived by his son, Thomas G. Grubbs Jr. and wife, Lora; his grandchildren, Chris, Cathy, Sarah, Stephen and Preston; and his great-granddaughter, Cassie Robinson; his sisters, Margie Chappell, Millie Grubbs and Connie Parrish; his brother, Carrington Grubbs; and dear friend, Melba Allen. Mr. Grubbs' passion in life was raising homing pigeons. He was retired from DuPont and was a lifetime member of the VFW. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., where the family will receive friends Friday (today), 11 to 2 and 6 to 8 p.m. Graveside services will be held Saturday, 11 a.m., Greenwood Memorial Gardens.

JERMAN
Mary Johnson Jerman died May 22, 2001, at Westminster-Canterbury, her residence for the last 15 years. She was born in 1892 at Crescent, W.Va., the daughter of Mary Leavell and Captain William Ransom Johnson of Chesterfield, Va. Captain Johnson was an engineer on General Lee's staff. Mrs. Jerman was seven when her mother died and she moved to Richmond to live with friends, then with her father at the Jefferson Hotel. In 1918 she married William Borden Jerman of Raleigh, N.C. At the time of his death in 1941, he was vice president of the former Virginia Trust Company. Mrs. Jerman was graduated from Miss Jennie Ellett's School, now St. Catherine's School, and she attended Sweet Briar College. She was a charter member of the Junior League of Richmond, a member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the Commonwealth of Virginia, the Tuckahoe Garden Club, The Woman's Club and St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Mrs. Jerman had three older brothers, William, Pegram and Francis Johnson. She is survived by three daughters, Mary Leavell Tompkins, Frances J. Brown and Julia J. Neal; grandchildren, Christopher R. Tompkins Jr., Mary T. Miller, Edith C. Gillis, Julia N. Rose, Marie Neal, Frances N. Smyth, David Neal; eight great-grandchildren. Mrs. Jerman was predeceased by her grandson, John R. Chapman Jr. A memorial service will be held 12 noon Saturday, May 26, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Catherine's School Foundation, St. Paul's Church or Westminster-Canterbury Fellowship Fund.

JORDAN
Mrs. Elizabeth B. Jordan, born April 17, 1928, passed away Thursday, May 24, 2001. She was the widow of her loving husband, Cabell C. Jordan Sr. and is survived by three children, Bonnie A. Barnes, Jacqueline L. Disse and her husband, Buck, Cabel C. Jordan Jr. and his wife, Lena; three grandchildren, Lisa D. Harris, Kathy D. Dmytryszyn, Edward L. Disse III; one stepgrandchild, Acie Bryant; three great-grandchildren, Matthew Harris, Kaitlyn Disse, Kanyon Dmytryszyn; and one stepgreat-grandchild, Aidan Dillon. Mrs. Jordan was a lifetime member of Pine Street Baptist Church and was retired from Philip Morris. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday. Interment Riverview Cemetery.

LELAND
Alex Leland Jr., 73, of Fork Union, died May 23, 2001 at his home. He was born March 18, 1928 in Mollusk, Virginia, son of the late Alex Leland Sr. and Helen Towles Leland. Mr. Leland graduated from Fork Union military Academy in 1947 and returned in 1953 to work at the Academy for 21 years. He and his wife founded Leland Construction Co., Fork Union Village Shopping Center and Fork Union Village Hardware. He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church and past president of the Fluvanna Lions Club. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Mary B. Leland; two sons, Ralph Leland and Lex Leland and his wife, Ingrid; two grandsons, Jared and Alex Leland; one granddaughter, Natalie Leland; one sister, Helen Towles Palmer; seven sisters-in-law, Florence Brenner, Lila Chase, Virginia Berry, Margie Berry, Jean Berry and Edith Berry and Frances Berry; four brothers-in-law, William (Bill) Berry, Mevelle Berry, Collin Berry and John G. Palmer; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Sheridan Funeral Home Chapel, Kents Store. Interment graveside service will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Whitechapel in Lively, Va. Family will receive friends at the Sheridan Funeral Home tonight from 7 to 8:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Fork Union Volunteer Fire Department or the Fork Union Volunteer Rescue Squad.

LOWERY
Michael Wayne Lowery, 43, of Sandston, departed this life Wednesday, May 23, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Marie Lowery; his daughter, Elizabeth; his son, Jeremy; his mother, Ada Norris; one brother, Stanley Lowery; three sisters, Diane Keenan and her husband, Mell (Butch), Sue Roberts and Tina Turner; also several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Stanley R. Lowery. Mr. Lowery was a member of Mechanicsville Moose Lodge, an active member of the Sandston Youth Association and Babe Ruth Baseball. His remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, and where a Moose service will be conducted 7 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at the Nelsen Chapel. Interment Washington Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sandston Youth Association and Babe Ruth Baseball, or to the Henrico Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 911, Sandston, Va. 23150.

MABE
Admired and loved by her family and many friends, Barbara Bozarth Mabe of Wake, Va., died at Riverside Hospital in Newport News, Va. on May 23, 2001. Daughter of Richard and Marguerite Bozarth, she was born in Wichita, Kan. February 13, 1931. Barbara grew up in Richmond, Va., graduated from John Marshall High School in 1948 and attended Richmond Professional Institute. She worked at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, Thalhimer's Department Store, The Christian Children's Fund and Cabell Eanes Advertising Agency. Barbara earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Virginia Commonwealth University, and spent much of her remaining years as an art teacher to both adults and children, including the Jacob's Ladder enrichment program. She was a member of the Chesapeake Bay Branch of the National League of American Pen Women and a member of the Mathews Art Group. Her paintings and sculptures have received honors in juried and non-juried art events and have been shown in galleries and public venues in Richmond and the Tidewater area. One of her paintings was selected for display in the United States Embassy in Surinam, including a Washington, D.C. gala for the selected outstanding artists. She was an enthusiastic promoter of the arts and helped organize and promote through the Unitarian Church, the Gallery series of art shows. Barbara won a prize for juvenile fiction at the Rappahannock Writers Conference. Barbara is survived by her husband, R. Scott Mabe; her son, Richard E. Mabe; daughter-in-law Judy; grandsons, Richard Scott and Daniel Lee; granddaughter, Jennifer of Mathews; daughter, Anne Margaret Witmer; son-in-law, Jeffrey; grandchildren, Jason, Jeremy and Tiffany of Wake. Also grandson, Jon Dubel and daughter-in-law, Patty; grandchildren, Chase, Hadden, and Olivia of Wilmington, N.C. Also surviving are her sister, Nancy B. Berger; brother-in-law, Richard; and niece, Susan Ann, all of Richmond. Her zeal for life, her beauty and generous spirit will live on in our hearts. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in her name to the American Cancer Society, c/o Betty Page Bristow, P.O. Box 22, Urbanna, Va. 23175. A memorial service will be held at the Philippi Christian Church in Deltaville, Va. Saturday, May 26, at 2 p.m.

MARTIN
Edward Leroy Martin, Sr., 75, of Marietta, Ga. died Wednesday, May 23, 2001. Memorial services 3 p.m. Sunday, May 27, 2001 at Sandy Springs Christian Church, 301 Johnson Ferry Road, Sandy Springs, Ga. A Johnstown, Pa. native, chemist, and U. S. Navy Veteran of World War II, he lived in Richmond for several years and worked for Reynolds Metals. Survivors include his wife, Barbara Eason Martin of Marietta, Ga.; three sons, Edward L. Martin Jr.; Frank Martin, and Neale Martin, all of Marietta, GA; one daughter, Beth Ranson of Danville, VA; one brother, Jack B. Martin of Somerset, Pa.; nine grandchildren; one aunt, Billie Barmecky of Johnstown, Pa.; nieces and nephews. Memorial donations in lieu of flowers to the American Cancer Society, 1825 Barrett Lakes Blvd., Suite 280, Kennesaw, Ga. 30144. Medford-Peden Funeral Home, Marietta, Ga.

McCLOUD
Mary Hebbie McCloud, 64, of Palmyra, died Wednesday, May 23, 2001 at her home. She was born August 6, 1937 in Goochland, Va., the daughter of Daisy and Willie (Crowan) Thurston. She was preceded in death by her husband, Linwood Mac McCloud; her parents; her brother, Charles Thurston; and sister, Thelma Sherer. Survivors include sisters, Barbara Ray and her spouse, Earl, Jane Eubank, June Worley and her spouse, Steve; brothers, Clarence and his spouse, Margaret and Willie Junior Thurston; along with nine children, Linwood Jr. and spouse, Jeanette, Carolyn Currier and spouse, Roger, David and spouse, Karen, Dianne Cowgill and spouse, Gene, Alan and spouse, Vickie, James and spouse, Charita, Bobby and fiancee, Lisa, Theresa and fiance, Danny, Sam and fiance, Kathy; 20 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 26, 11 a.m., Mizpah Christian Church, Fife, Va. Interment church cemetery. Family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Norman Funeral Home, Goochland, Va.

NEBLETT
Elizabeth Hester Deel Neblett, 90, of Richmond, widow of Sterling Neblett Sr., departed this life May 24, 2001, at Chippenham Hospital. Mrs. Neblett was born September 21, 1910 in Clintwood, Va. She is survived by one daughter, Sallie Baskerville Neblett; one son, Sterling Neblett Jr.; one sister, Lessie Deel Garber Sutherland; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was a 56-year member of Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, serving on the Altar Guild, a longtime member of the Forest Hill Garden Club, and a volunteer at Chippenham Hospital for 17 years. Mrs. Neblett was a wonderful and gracious lady, beloved by everyone who knew her. Funeral notice pending.

NORTON
Patricia Miller Norton, 75, of Richmond, formerly of Chicago, Ill., passed away May 24, 2001. She is survived by her son, Clifford C. Norton and his wife, Ann Lewis of Richmond; daughter, Susan Kinne and her husband, Donnelly of Los Altos, Calif.; also two grandchildren, Christopher A. and Craig M. Norton, both of Richmond. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Rd. Interment private. A special thank you from the family to the First Floor ICU nurses at Johnston-Willis Hospital.

Ms. Doris L. Redwine, of Richmond, Va., departed this life Thursday, May 24, 2001. Remains rest at the Robert Mealy Funeral Home, Goochland, Va. Funeral notice later.
