MODISETT
Shirley Augustus (SAM) Modisett, 82 years, of Richmond, died May 25, 2002. He was born August 30, 1919, in Luray, Virginia, the son of the late Augustus Martin Modisett and Eliza Shirley Modisett. He is survived by his wife of almost 59 years, Marine Aleshire Modisett; two daughters, Cynthia Milbergs and Shirley Hubard; a son, Jeffrey Modisett; six grandchildren, Stephanie Milbergs, Macon Hubard, Knox Hubard Jr. and Jeffrey, Alexandra and Burke Modisett; and a sister, Elizabeth Senseney of Charles Town, West Virginia; and a foster sister, Dorothy Lowe Campbell of Luray, Virginia. He was a retired U.S. Army Captain and World War II veteran, having served with the 16th Armored Combat Engineer Battalion, 1st Armored Division in North Africa and Italy, awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and EAME Theatre Ribbon with three Battle Stars, and wounded at Anzio, Italy, February 26, 1944. Upon recovery, he served as a mine warfare and demolition instructor at Fort Belvoir, U.S. Army Engineering School. At the end of World War II, he joined Conquest, Moncure & Dunn, Inc., general contractors, as an estimator. In 1976, he became co-owner and president of the firm and retired as chairman emeritus in 1994 after 49 years of service. Mr. Modisett, a 1941 civil engineering graduate of Virginia military Institute, accepted a position as a junior engineer in the Construction Division, Engineering Dept. of E.I. Du Pont De Nemours & Co., Wilmington, Delaware. He was a deacon and an elder in First Presbyterian Church of Richmond; past trustee Westminster Presbyterian Homes; president of Virginia Association of Contractors; president, Richmond Branch, Associated General Contractors; secretary and director, Associated General Contractors of Virginia; president, Senior Center of Richmond; president, Mooreland Farms Association; director, Engineer Club of Richmond and Kiwanis Club of Richmond; and chairman of Virginia Joint Cooperative Committee AIA, AGC, CEC, and VSPE. He was a member of the Country Club of Virginia and the Kiwanis Club of Richmond. He said his greatest reward was "The Funny Finger Award (portion of one finger missing) in grateful recognition of his war effort in raising three children and six grandchildren with humor, wisdom, and generosity", presented to him on his eightieth birthday by his children and grandchildren. Remains rest at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd., where the family will receive friends at 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 28. Funeral services will be held May 29 at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, Richmond, Va. Interment will be at Westhampton Memorial Park, 10000 Patterson Ave. and Gaskins Rd. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to VMI Foundation, P.O. Box 932, Lexington, Va. 24450; or First Presbyterian Church, 4602 Cary Street Rd., Richmond, Va. 23226.

NELSON
Clarence F. Nelson of Chesterfield passed away May 23, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Alice Sester Oliver Nelson; sister, Thelma N. Snead of Richmond; and niece, Gay S. Capps. Mr. Nelson worked for E.I. duPont for 26 years, where he served as a supervisor for 21 years. He was a WWII Army veteran and served as a Tech Sergeant. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. and Monday from 6 to 8 p.m., and where funeral services will be held Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. Interment Oakwood Cemetery.

PARRISH
Mabel Williams Parrish, of Virginia Beach, formerly of Richmond, passed away Saturday, May 25, 2002. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond V. Parrish. Mrs. Parrish is survived by her daughter, Joanne W. Fall of Virginia Beach; grandchildren, Stephanie F. Jones, Cynthia F. Ott, John E. Fall and David C. Fall; great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Madeline and Alexandra Ott, Lincoln Jones, Davis Fall, Sydney Fall and Ryann Fall. A graveside service will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday in Dale Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 4600 Cox Road, Suite 130, Glen Allen, Va. 23060. The Bliley Funeral Home is serving the family.

ROBINSON
Departed this life Thursday, May 23, 2002, Mr. Isaac Robinson, age 91, of Amelia, Va. He leaves to cherish his memory a daughter, Carolyn Spurlock and husband, Theodore; son, Russell Robinson; three grandchildren, Herbert Hayes, Todd Spurlock and Tiffany Spurlock; one granddaughter-in-law, Jewell; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Herman Robinson; sister, Virginia Johnson; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Michael W. Hawkes Funeral Home, Rt. 360, Amelia. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 29 at 2 p.m. from Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Amelia. Interment church cemetery.

SCOTT
Departed this life May 23, 2002, Mrs. Norma L. Scott of Richmond. She is survived by her husband, Willie R. Scott Sr.; six sons, Willie R. Jr., Norman Sr., Joseph V., Darrell K., Quintin Sr. and Attila A. Scott; two daughters, Monique Scott and Sabrina Trimiew; 12 grandchildren; three brothers, William H. Jr., Charles V. Sr. and Aldolphus J. Morris; two sisters, Valerie Dennis and Karen Morris; a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins; mother-in-law, Lucy C. Scott; four daughters-in-law, Sheila, Debra, Cynthia and Shirelle Scott; other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Walter J. Manning Funeral Home, 700 North 25th St., where funeral services will be held Tuesday 12 noon. Elder Shirley McCoy officiating. Burial Greenwood Memorial Gardens.

SUTPHIN
Mr. Carl H. Sutphin Jr., 83, of Richmond, died on May 25, 2002. He was retired from E. I. DuPont and was a WWII veteran serving in the 20th Air Force. He is survived by his wife, Katherine Hendrick Sutphin; brothers-in-law, Msgr. Frank J. Hendrick and Arthur C. Hendrick Jr.; sister-in-law, Anne H. Hendrick; and many nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and Monday, with a Rosary being said at 7 p.m. Monday at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart where he was a member.

TOOMBS
Allen Wayne Toombs, 59, of Richmond died May 24, 2002. He is survived by his companion, Lolly Keith; his daughter, Sandra D. Freer and her husband, Duane; his son, Troy W. Toombs and his wife, Perri; his grandsons, Austin W. and Matthew P. Freer and Jake B. and Zachary L. Toombs; and his brother, Ronald R. Toombs. Visitation will be held Monday, May 27 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the home of Lolly Keith.

VAUGHAN
Mrs. Rosa B. Vaughan, age 79, entered into eternal rest May 22, 2002. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Vaughan. She is survived by her son, Abe Vaughan; her daughter, nine grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; a devoted daughter-in-law, Elaine; devoted sister-in-law, Deaconess Estelle Coleman; a host of other relatives and friends, two devoted, Mrs. Pearl Jones and Mrs. Nollie Lovett. Remains rest at the Chiles Funeral Home, 2100 Fairmount Ave. Eulogistic services will be conducted Tuesday, 1 p.m. from Sharon Baptist Church, 1st and Leigh Sts. Pastor Rev. P.A. Coles officiating. ADAMS
Josephine Elsner Adams, 73, of Richmond, died Saturday, December 15, 2001. She was the widow of Beryl Adams. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Louis and Ellen Renee Adams of Richmond; and her daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Wayne Bernstein of Hollywood, Fla.; three granddaughters, Jennifer, Rebekah, and Stefanie Adams. She was a past treasurer of Temple Beth-El sisterhood and a volunteer at the Beth Shalom Home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to either Temple Beth-El Playpen Fund or to Rudlin Torah Academy. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Richmond Beth-El Cemetery at Forest Lawn.

ALLEN
Georgie Tiller Allen, 89, widow of William N. Allen, died Thursday, December 13, 2001. She is survived by her son, Conway and his wife, Bernadine; grandchildren, Colin and Hilary Allen; a sister, Eleanor Gershowitz. She was a life member of Glen Allen Baptist Church, a 1933 graduate of the University of Richmond and a retired medical secretary. Her family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd., where services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday. ATKINSON
Mollie Brooks Atkinson, widow of John R. Atkinson, died Friday, December 14, 2001. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Brooke Paige Atkinson, and is survived by her children, Diana Raulerson of Jacksonville, Fla., Roger Atkinson of Bracey, Va., Sharon Cook of Glen Allen, and Bob Atkinson of Chesterfield; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Atkinson was a member of Zoar Baptist Church in Deltaville. The family will receive friends 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday and 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd., where services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday. Richard C. Brannock, 49, of Henrico, passed away December 12, 2001. He is survived by his children, William T. Brannock and Victoria L. Brannock; and their mother, Sharon M. Brannock; two brothers, Thomas Kendall Jr. and Jeffrey Bruce; and a sister, Deborah Jean. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., where the family will receive friends Tuesday, December 18, from 5 to 7 p.m.

BUONO
Sebastian John Buono, 80, of Crewe, Va., died Friday, December 14, 2001 after a long illness. He is survived by his wife, Gertrud; sons, John and Robert and their families. The family will receive friends at the Jennings-McMillian Funeral Home, Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. The funeral services will be held at the Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Amelia, 11 a.m. Monday. military honors will be performed by Crewe VFW Post 7819. Audrey Louise Davis, 79, of Richmond, passed away December 14, 2001. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Annette Davis West. She is survived by her husband, Frank A. Davis Jr.; daughter, Elizabeth Davis Cowardin; son, Richard Davis; brother, Ira Franklin; four grandchildren, Grady Cowardin, Richard West III and Jacquelyn Cowardin and Carlie West. Mrs. Davis volunteered with the Richmond Area Association for Retarded Children. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Greenwood Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

DOWDY
James E. Dowdy, 89, of Richmond, died Thursday, December 13, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Bessie B. Dowdy; four children, Janice Briggs and her husband, Ed, Brenda Brock, Kenneth Parr and his wife, Janet and Allan Parr and his wife, Terry; seven grandchildren, Ted and Kristi Briggs, Mason and Teri Brock, Jamie McDaniel and Zach and Leah Parr; four great-grandchildren; eight sisters, Gertrude Anderson, Bernice Coakley, Myrtle Davenport, Lois Duncan, Katherine Joholski, Joann Lewis, Julia Malberg and Epsie Patterson; two brothers, the Rev. Herman A. and Robert Dowdy; also many nieces and nephews. Mr. Dowdy was a retired plant superintendent for Bethlehem Steel with 41 years of service, and a member of Skipwith United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd., where services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday. Interment Westhampton Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund of Skipwith United Methodist Church.

David Wade East, 46, of Moseley, died December 14, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Cindy Burruss East; one brother, Harold East; sister-in-law, Donna East; one niece, Amy Crawford; and one great-nephew, Josh. The family will receive friends Monday from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Hwy. (Rt. 60), Powhatan, and where a memorial service will be held 7:30 p.m. Monday.
