Mrs. Olia H. Venable of Richmond, formerly of Rocky Mount, N.C., and widow of William M. Venable, departed this life Wednesday, August 28, 2002. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Sts. Funeral notice later.

WILKINSON
Howard Marion "Wilk" Wilkinson, 80, (Lt. Army, Retired) of Richmond departed this life, August 27, 2002. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Dorothy Bell Wilkinson; daughters, Ellen W. Gardner (Jessie) of Texas, Lorna W. Cosby (Milton), Rheba W. Williford (William) of Richmond; sisters, Susie Holmes, Cornelia Overton (Carl) of Richmond, Mable Thornton (Joseph) of Washington, D.C. and Fannie Fitzgerald (Roger) of Woodbridge, Va.; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; a faithful niece, Sandra Wilkins; devoted friend, Carl Branch; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. His remains rest at the W.S. Watkins & Son Funeral Home, 2700 North Ave., where his family will receive friends Thursday, 7 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday, August 30, 2002 at Fifth Street Baptist Church, 2800 Third Ave. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery.

ARNOLD
John Richard Arnold, 66, born in Seattle, Wash., current resident of Richmond, died March 29, 2002. Survivors include his wife, Bertha Ann Arnold; one daughter, Julie Ann Smith and her husband, Harry Lee Smith Jr.; his mother, Loretta Arnold; three brothers, Leon, Edward, and Joel; two grandchildren, Christopher Lee Smith and Jamie Ann Smith; one great-granddaughter, Jade Elizabeth Smith; and other loving family. A memorial service will be held 7 p.m. Monday at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Road. Inurnment Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

BARNES-SWARTZ
Daphne Barnes Swartz passed away on February 25, 2002. She was buried on February 26 at Hollywood Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 6 at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, Midlothian, Virginia.

BLANTON
Virginia Waddill Blanton, 96, passed away on Friday, March 29, 2002, at the Petersburg Home for Ladies in Petersburg, Virginia. She was the daughter of the late Mary Virginia Wade and James Thomas Waddill Sr. of Victoria, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Hugh Lawrence Blanton. She is survived by two daughters, Virginia Lawrence Blanton Bailey and husband, Bill of Williamsburg, Virginia and Betty Wade Blanton Jones and husband, Jerry of Petersburg, Virginia; five grandchildren, Sara Elizabeth Jones Hyre and husband, David of Seattle, Wash., J. Hall Jones Jr. of Boston, Mass., W. Blanton Jones and wife, Delaine of Nashville, Tenn., Virginia Catherine Bailey of Fort Worth, Texas and Lee Wilson Bailey of New York City. Virginia Blanton was a retired math educator, having taught in Victoria High School and Amelia High School during her career. The family will receive friends Monday night at the home of her daughter, Betty Wade, at 1746 Westover Ave., Petersburg, Va., from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. (804-732-1275). Funeral services will be Tuesday, April 2, 2 p.m. at the Blackstone Baptist Church, Blackstone, Va., with interment following at the Lakeview Cemetery in Victoria, Va. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Virginia, 7231 Forest Avenue, Suite 100, Richmond, Va. 23226 or the Victoria High School Preservation Foundation, Inc., P.O. Box 899, Victoria, Va. 23974. Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son in charge of arrangements.

BOOTH
Alice Frix Booth, 91, formerly of Richmond and Arlington, died in Florida on Tuesday, March 26, 2002. She was the widow of John Clarke Booth Jr. and is survived by her son, Dr. John Clarke Booth III; two granddaughters, Robin Watson and her husband, Yort of Clearwater, Fla., and Holly Cloud and her husband, Brandon of Arlee, Montana; two great-grandchildren, Peter and Abigail Watson; and her sister, Frances Frix Atkinson and her husband, Leon (Jimmy). She was predeceased by her husband, her beloved parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Brownlee Frix; her brother, Alton Frix; and sister, Mrs. Robert Buckley (Maxine). She was employed by the U.S. Department of Defense and was president of the Pentagon Garden Club, a former member of the William Byrd Chapter of the DAR, and a member of First Baptist Church in Richmond. A private interment will take place in Riverview Cemetery. If desired, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Assoc.

Andrew L. (Pete) Brown, formerly of Mark Rd., departed this life at Retreat Hospital March 28, 2002. He is survived by two nieces, Joyce Johnson and Rose Crook; other relatives and friends. A memorial service will be held Monday, 12 Noon at the Carlton T. Brooks Funeral Home, 2200 Hull St. Elder Elsie Atkins officiating. Relatives and friends attending services, assemble at the funeral home Monday, 11:45 a.m.

Jesse Ford Brown of 601 Larrymore Court departed this life Friday, March 29, 2002. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Streets. Funeral notice later.

CALLAHAN
Dr. Barbara J. Callahan of Gambrills, Md. died on March 29, 2002. Beloved wife of the late John P. Callahan and the late Raymond E. Oakley Jr.; loving mother of David J., William H. and Richard J. Callahan; dear daughter of Mrs. Lillian Hall and the late Richard W. Hall; also survived by three grandchildren. Friends may call on Monday, April 1 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at the Hardesty Funeral Home, P.A., 851 Annapolis Rd., Gambrills, Md. Funeral services at 3 p.m. in the St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Crownsville, Md. Interment church cemetery. Contributions in her memory are suggested to the Center for ALS Research at Johns Hopkins University, 1620 McElderry St., Reed Hall Room 1126, Baltimore, Md. 22105.

CARRIGAN
James D. Carrigan, age 80, of Chesterfield, formerly of Pittsford, Vt., died Thursday, March 28, 2002. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Joshua Carrigan. He is survived by three sons, Jimmy Carrigan and his wife, Joyce of Lake Worth, Fla., David Carrigan of Conroe, Texas and Bernard Carrigan of Pahrump, Nev.; five grandchildren, Sean, Todd, Gary, Christie and Wendy Carrigan, all of Texas. He was also a grandpa to Travis and Coltin Cosby of Powhatan, Va., Hanna Harrison and Alexandra Ehrhardt of Chesterfield. Other survivors include two great-grandchildren, both of Texas; a sister, Mary Kehoe of Charlotte, Vt.; two brothers, Bob Carrigan of Boston, Mass. and Jerome Carrigan of Monson, Mass. He had lived in Chesterfield County for a number of years and became very special to Ruth Berkley, Bonnie and James Cosby, the late Brent Berkley, Pamela Ehrhardt, Chris Ehrhart, Stacie and Denny Collins. Their lives were much enriched by his friendship. He was a very dear man and will never be forgotten by anyone whose life he touched. He was owner and trainer of Standard Bred Race Horses. When the Horseman's Association was formed to work for horse racing in Virginia, he was on the Board of Directors and worked tirelessly to accomplish this goal. He was a retired welder/pipefitter and worked on nuclear power plants for many years. The family will receive friends Sunday, March 31 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday. Interment Dale Memorial Park.

Moses A. Carter of 1016 Newkirk Dr. died March 30, 2002. Remains rest at Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Blvd. Funeral notice later.

COPES
Kenneth Byron Copes Sr., age 84, died Friday, March 29, 2002. He was a member and Elder of the Overbrook Presbyterian Church, a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, and a retiree of the Western Electric Co. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy L. Copes; one son, Kenneth Byron Copes Jr. and his wife, Charlene of Venice, Fla.; three grandchildren, Nichole Brittany Copes, Austin Taylor Copes and Mark Tyler Copes; and one brother, Dr. Arthur W. Copes of Richmond. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. this evening at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 West Broad St., where a funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 1, 2002. Interment will follow in Westhampton Memorial Park.

CRAWFORD
Nancy Clague Crawford, 76, of Richmond, died March 29, 2002 due to complications from diabetes.. Mrs. Crawford was a lover of gardening and music and had many other talents. She was a wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She was known for her quiet nature and ability to nurture. She is survived by her husband, Earl H. Crawford; children, Brian Crawford, Michele Crawford and Paula Bryant; son-in-law, Fred Bryant; granddaughter, Carly Crawford; brothers, W. Donald Clague and Allen M. Clague Jr.; along with many other family members and friends. Preceded in death by her parents, Allen M. Clague and Pearl W. Clague Yost; and grandson, Spencer Bryant. A memorial service will be held at the West Richmond Church of the Brethren on Thursday, April 4, 2002 at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association by calling 1-800-342-2383.

DAVIS
Marvin Davis Jr., of Richmond, passed away March 29, 2002, his 81st birthday. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and Korea, a member of VFW Post 9808, a member of Metropolitan Lodge #11, A. F. & A. M., a member of the ACCA Temple Shrine Legion of Honor and was employed by The Commonwealth Club. He is survived by three daughters, Linda Thomas and her husband, Neil, Nancy Poythress and her husband, Bobby and Marianne McGhee and her husband, Scott; three grandchildren, Christopher Thomas, Kathryn McGhee and Hobie Poythress; two sisters, Katherine Hall, and Elizabeth Johnson; a niece, Shirley O'Donohue; and a nephew, Mark Anderson. Remains rest at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Road, where the family will receive friends Sunday, March 31 from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m., and where a funeral service will be conducted Monday, April 1 at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Bernard Lee Dyer, 85, of Chesterfield, went to be with the Lord on Friday March 29, 202. He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Virginia A. Dyer; daughters, Lucille D. Tiller, Frances D. Carter, Faye D. Hensley; sons, Edwin L., James B. and Charles L. Dyer; sister, Hazel D. Caldwell; brother, H. Gordon Dyer; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Mr. Dyer was a retired Station and Branch manager with the U.S. Postal Service, long time member of NARFE, Federated Craft #92, Masonic Lodge #161, ACCA Temple, Chesterfield Ruritan and a lifetime member of Branch's Baptist Church. His family will receive friends 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. (Rt.10). His funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Monday at Branch's Baptist Church. Interment will be at Dale Memorial Park. Joyce H. Graham, age 74, of Powhatan County died March 30, 2002. She was a member of the Chesmond Woman's Club and a deacon at Westover Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, Howard D. Graham; daughters, Mary Jackson and her husband, Tim, Paula Bean and her husband, John; grandchildren, Kristie Cook, Nicholas Bean, Andrew Bean; and brother, Warren Higgins and his wife, Joan, Louisville, Ky. The family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Rd., Midlothian. A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at Westover Baptist Church, West 49th St. and Westover Hills Blvd. Interment will follow in Dale Memorial Park. Ethel Roth Grandis, 86, of Richmond, died Wednesday, March 27, 2002. She was the widow of Louis Grandis and was preceded in death by a daughter, Arlene Sue Grandis. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara G. and Randolph E. Carter; two granddaughters, Lauren E. and Traci P. Carter; two brothers, Maurice Roth and Leonard Roth and his wife, June. Services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave. Interment Beth Torah Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, Va. 23060, or the American Lung Association, 9221 Forest Hill Ave., Richmond, Va. 23235.

GREGORY
Stanley J. Gregory Sr., age 87, of Mechanicsville, died Thursday, March 28, 2002. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Emilie G. Snavely. He is survived by his wife, (Regina) Helen Bialkowski Gregory; three sons, Wilford and his wife, Betty, S.J. Joe Jr. and his wife, Wanda, George W. and his wife, Donna; two daughters, Regina G. Boyle and her husband, Pat, Suzanne G. Garner and her husband, Howard; a devoted son-in-law, George Y. Snavely and his wife, Betty; a brother, William N. Gregory Jr.; two sisters, Arline G. Beuerlein and Marjorie G. Toombs; 17 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Mr. Gregory was a current member of the TPA and past president of PHCC. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., where the family will receive friends Saturday 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. and Sunday 4 to 8 p.m., with a Wake Service at 7 p.m. Sunday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Monday at the Church of the Redeemer. Interment Hanover Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sisters of Visitation, Rt. 1, Box 2055, Rockville, Va. 23146.
