Mildred B. Goodwin of Louisa, Va., wife of John D. Goodwin, passed away Tuesday, June 12, 2001. She is survived by her husband, John D. Goodwin of Louisa; one sister, Virginia B. Baker of Suisun City, Calif.; two brothers, Alonza G. Badgett Jr., Ray Coleman Badgett, both of Louisa; nieces and nephews, also great-nieces and great-nephews. She was the daughter of the late Ocie V. and Alonza Badgett Sr. She was a member of the Louisa Baptist Church. Graveside funeral services Thursday, June 14, 2001, 2 p.m. at the Goodwin family Cemetery, Tempenance Grove, 4 miles north of Louisa on Bibb Store Rd. Family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Woodward Funeral Home, Louisa. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Piedmont, 1490 Pantops Mountain Place, Suite 200, Charlottesville, Va. 22911.

HARRIS
Departed this life June 9, 2001, Addie R. Harris, of Montpelier, Va. She is survived by her husband, Andrew Harris; five sons, two daughters, seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; one sister, Reather Cooke; two sons-in-law, three daughters-in-law, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Henry W. Dabney Funeral Home, 518 N. Washington Hwy., Ashland. Funeral service 2 p.m. Thursday at Mt Olivet Baptist Church, Montpelier, Va. Rev. Wade Richmond, pastor. Dr. E.D. ISAAC
Oscar Isaac, 81, of Henrico, passed away June 12, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Arline C. Sidenberg Isaac; his children, Danny Isaac, Orit Shuster of Israel, Ramy Isaac of Connecticut; and three stepdaughters and their families; a brother, and two sisters, also eight grandchildren, eight stepgrandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He was retired from Bear Island Paper Mill and a volunteer at the Science Museum of Virginia and the Virginia Museum. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where funeral services will be held 12:30 p.m. on Thursday. Interment will be held 11 a.m Friday at Beth-Moses Cemetery, Long Island, N.Y.

LANGFORD
Patricia T. Langford, age 62, of Mechanicsville, passed away Monday, June 11, 2001. She is preceded in death by her son, Paul D. Langford. She is survived by her husband, Robert E. Langford; her children, Michael W. Langford, Tracey Seward and her husband, Larry and Kristen Yerian; also six grandchildren, Jacob, Lindsay, Ashley, Jordan, Cameron and Anna; two brothers, Dennis and Richard Tinsley. Remains rest at the Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 2110 E. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery.

LAVERGE
Jan Laverge was born November 17, 1909, in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. He was raised and educated in Holland. After graduating with a degree in Engineering, he joined his father's cigar wrapper trading firm in 1930. After the death of his father in 1934, Mr. Laverge came to the United States to accept a position with Universal Leaf Tobacco Co. he served Universal until his retirement in September, 1980. He had been a Director for 27 years and has been a leader in Universal's international expansion since the end of World War II. During the war he volunteered, was commissioned a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and served in the Office of Strategic Services (the O.S.S.). From London he commanded Operation Melanie, the combined US/Dutch effort to liberate occupied Holland. Soon after D-Day, Mr. Laverge acompanied the advancing Allied column into Amsterdam. He personally set free his mother, his uncle and his family from their German "house guests". He continued to serve, in Holland, until the end of the war in Europe. He separated from the Army with the rank of Major and received many decorations. France honored him with the Croix de Guerre (Class Corps d'Armee); Holland gave him special recognition as a member of their Underground and later made him a Knight of the Order of Orange Nassau. From the United States, he received the medal of the Legion of Merit - the honor of which he was most proud. After the war, Mr. Laverge returned to Richmond to his wife and two, soon to be three children. He returned to work at Universal Leaf Tobacco. In additon to a full and productive career with Universal Leaf, which he continued as Director Emeritus until his death, Mr. Laverge was active in civic affairs. He was a Board Member and President of the Richmond SPCA, and a member of The Collectors Circle of the Virginia Museum. He was a member of Grace and Holy Trinity Church and, for a time, managed their endowment. He was one of the first members of The Country Club of Virginia and a longtime member of The Commonwealth Club. He was a masterful gardener, a generous supporter of many good causes, and above all, he was a loving and loyal husband, father, grandfather and friend. Mr. Laverge was predeceased by his beloved son, Bart Jan Laverge and by two brothers and a sister. He is survived by his wife, Henrietta Boelen Laverge of Richmond; two daughters, Eva Laverge de Coligny of Roanoke and Charlotte Laverge West of Alexandria. He is also survived by his brother, Augustus Laverge, in the Netherlands; two sons-in-law, five grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. A family service will be held at the graveside, followed by a memorial service at Grace and Holy Trinity at 11 a.m. Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Mr. Laverge's honor to a charity or school of one's own choice. Arrangements are being handled by the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 West Broad St., Glen Allen.

MASON
Edward Henry Mason, 60, of Petersburg, died Monday, June 11, 2001. He was a native of Petersburg, the son of Robert Henry and Fannie Allen Newcomb Mason. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and retired employee of Wilson Trucking Company. He is survived by his wife, Linda P. Mason; stepsons, Donald and Ronald Phelps, all of Petersburg; granddaughter, Jennifer Ann Phelps of Prince George; a special sister-in-law, Joyce Slaughter of Petersburg; sister, Peggy M. Overbey (Robert), of Nelson, Va.; two brothers, Kenneth W. Mason (Linda) of Colonial Heights and Robert L. Mason of Petersburg; a special cousin, Alvin Williams (Barbara) of Rehoboth, Va. A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at the Colonial Heights Assembly of God, 16801 Harrowgate Road.

NORMAN
Ethel Bonifant Norman, 76 of Richmond, passed away on June 11, 2001. She was prededed in death by her husband of 54 years, Latane F. Norman. She is survived by two daughters, Vernice N. Goldman, Linda N. Marano and her husband, Dennis; one sister, Mary B. Douglas; two grandchildren, Christopher G. Goldman and Whitney R. Marano; one great-grandchild, Kathryn E. Goldman. Visitaiton will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 South Laburnum Ave. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

POWELL
Melvin L. Powell, age 80, of Richmond, died Wednesday, June 6, 2001. He is survived by four daughters and three sons-in-law, Patricia and Jerry Lipscomb, Cheri and Lewis Lynch, Rose and Ben Grizzard, Mary Sheally; a son, Warren L. Powell; eleven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. and funeral services will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the Church of God of Prophecy, 3400 Turner Road, on Thursday, June 14, 2001. Edward Eugene Powers of Mechanicsville died June 11, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Carol Powers; a daughter, Stacey Lyn Powers; and a son, Gordon Edward Powers. He was a Navy veteran during Vietnam, a member of the Civil Air Patrol and the Mechanicsville Rotary Club, and the owner of Edward Powers Insurance Agency. Although hs was a recent "come here" to Virginia, he was a Virginian in his heart. Remains rest at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee Davis Rd., where the family will receive friends from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, June 14, 2001, at Enon United Methodist Church. Burial in the church cemetery.

REECE
Cora B. Reece, 89, of Penola, died Sunday, June 10, 2001 at Memorial Regional Medical Center in Hanover County. Born in Ruther Glen, Mrs. Reece was the owner and operator of Trailway Inn in Penola since 1938. She was the widow of Welford Arlen Reece. Survivors include a son, Welford A. Reece Jr. of Ruther Glen; a grandson, Welford A. Reece III of King William; three sisters, Laura Armstrong, Gussie Taylor and Frances Lamont, all of Richmond; and three great-granddaughters. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, June 14, 2001, in the chapel of Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green. Burial will follow in Mt. Hermon Baptist Church Cemetery, Shumansville. Virginia Hunter Ryan, 83, of Richmond, formerly of Petersburg, passed away on Tuesday, June 12, 2001. She was the daughter of the late Palmer Jerman and Patie Fraser Hunter. She is survived by two brothers, Jerman Meade Hunter of Petersburg and Edwin Haskins Hunter of Jacksonville, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home.

SANDERLIN
Jacqueline (Joy) Mitchell Sanderlin of West Point, passed away June 12, 2001. She is survived by her husband, Robert J. Sanderlin; a daughter, Tammy A. Pettigrew of Victoria, Va.; a son, Jesse W. Krout of Geneso, Ill.; her parents, Ed and Alice Mitchell of Mechanicsville; five brothers, Jim and Bill Mitchell of Richmond, Sam, Dan and Mike Mitchell of Mechanicsville; a sister, Jane Watkins of Mechanicsville; also four grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 16, 2001, at 1 p.m. at the Mechanicsville Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 4262 Studley Rd., Mechanicsville.

Roger J. Sharer, 60, of Chesterfield, formerly of Port Crane, N.Y., died Sunday, June 10, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Mary L. Sharer; daughter, Donna Niles of Chesterfield; son, Roger J. Sharer II of Chesterfield; brother, David W. Sharer of Afton, N.Y; and one grandchild. A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 15, 2001, at 10:30 a.m. at Rockwood Park, Shelter 4. SOUTHARD
Harry Walker Southard, 88, of Mechanicsville, died June 12, 2001. He is survived by his brother, George Southard; sisters, Janie Davis, May Bowles, Maude Kirby, Ruth Farmer, Katherine Dunn; and a niece, Gwen Wiegel. Remains rest at the Mechanicsville Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee Davis Road, where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, and where services will be held 12 noon Thursday, June 14, 2001. BELKIN
Jay E. Belkin, 53, of Midlothian, formerly of New York, died November 28, 2001. Survivors include his wife, Ruth; two sons, Seth and Michael; mother, Ruth S. Belkin; sister, Edith Friedman and her husband, Markus; two nieces, one nephew and extended family. Mr. Belkin was a retired major with the Virginia National Guard and was a Senior Physician's Assistant at the V.A. Medical Center. A memorial service will be held 4 p.m. Thursday (today) at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Road. Inurnment private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association.

BLACK
Dr. Maxwell Frank Black Jr. of Warrenton, Va., died Sunday, November 25, 2001 at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, Va. He is survived by his wife, Paula of Warrenton, Va.; and eight children. Memorial service will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Warrenton, Va. at 6:30 p.m. November 30.
