JACKSON
Sophia Kay Jackson, 58, of Crozier, Va., formerly of Parkersburg, W.Va., died Friday, December 22, 2000 in Henrico Doctors' Hospital, Richmond, Va., after a long illness. She was a homemaker. Surviving are her husband, Denver M. Jackson of Parkersburg, W.Va.; son, Denver E. Jackson of Kents Store, Va.; daughter, Sonja K. Tate of Crozier, Va.; brother, Charles Myers of Frame, W.Va.; sister, Anabelle Sparks of Porters Creek, W.Va.; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren. Service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Hafer Funeral Home Chapel, Elkview, with the Rev. Joseph M. Marten Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Elk Hills Memorial Park, Big Chimney, W.Va. Friends may call Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Hafer Funeral Home, Elkview, W.Va.

JENSEN
Cory David Jensen, age 10, of Quinton, Va., passed away suddenly on Tuesday, December 26, 2000. He was a native of York County, before moving to Quinton in 1995. Cory was a fifth grade student at George W. Watkins Elementary School. He was a special child who loved life. Cory always wanted to help others. He loved the outdoors, skateboarding, snowboarding, boating and music. He also loved his little brother, Kyle, and his dogs, Cosmo and Oakley. He will be truly missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his parents, David D. and Dawn L. Jensen; a brother, Kyle S. Jensen of the home; maternal grandmother, Mary Childers and her husband, Rick of Mathews; maternal grandfather, Larry Laughery Sr. and his wife, Janet of Gloucester; paternal grandmother, Patricia Jensen and the late Duane J. Jensen of Yorktown; several aunts and uncles and numerous cousins. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 30, 11:30 a.m. in Amory Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Friday from 7 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home.

JOHNSON
Mr. Joseph A. Johnson departed this life December 25, 2000. He is survived by one daughter, Joyce Ann Johnson; two sisters, Magdalene M. Richardson and Lucy J. Brown; brother, Emmett R. Johnson; one sister-in-law, Annie Terry; nieces, nephews, and cousins. Funeral services private.

LAW
Jean Cook Law, 75, of Richmond, died Monday, December 25, 2000. She is survived by two sons, Bryan and Christian Law; a grandson, Joseph Law; brother, Franklin Cook. Mrs. Law was an active member of Chamberlayne Heights United Methodist Church. Born on Church Hill, she spent her entire life in Richmond and retired from the C&O Railroad after 40 years of service. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Atlee Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, corner of Route 301 and Shady Grove Rd., Mechanicsville. A graveside service will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, December 28, 2000, at Signal Hill Memorial Park, followed by a memorial service 11 a.m. at Chamberlayne Heights United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Chamberlayne Heights United Methodist Church.

LEWIS

LOY
Edgar R. Loy, 68, of Mineral, died at Martha Jefferson Hospital, December 26, 2000, surrounded by his family and loved ones. Funeral services will be held at Louisa Baptist Church, 305 E. Main Street at 11 a.m. Friday, December 29, 2000. The family will receive friends at Woodward Funeral Home on Thursday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. He is survived by his wife, Sylvia L. Loy; one son, Edward R. Loy; five daughters, Deborah F. Wesbey, Janice M. Ely, Brenda L. Barrett, Lorie R. Williams, all of Louisa and Joy L. Spotswood of Ruckersville; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was a member of Louisa Baptist Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mineral Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 534, Mineral, Virginia 23117. Woodward Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

LUCK
Cole M. Luck, 44, of Hopewell, formerly of Midlothian, died Tuesday, December 26, 2000. Survivors include his brother and sisters, Snead Luck, Patsy Grise, Sandra Marr, Pam Fleetwood, and Martha Chaffin. Services and interment will be private. Memorial gifts to Caritas, P.O. Box 25790, Richmond, Va. 23260.

McLEAN
John B. McLean II, age 38, a native of Richmond, passed away on December 24, 2000 at his residence here in Richmond. He is survived by his parents, John W. McLean and Kathryn J. McLean of Richmond; daughter, Lindsay Nicole McLean of Orlando, Fla.; and a sister, Dr. Kalbryn A. McLean of Denver, Colo. He was the grandson of the late Admiral John B. McLean, U.S.N. Ret. A memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Bon Air Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bon Air Presbyterian Church Building Fund or The Memorial Garden.

MERCADO
Manuel Nieva (Lito) Mercado Jr. passed away December 26, 2000. He is survived by his wife, Norma H. Mercado; his children, Linore Poston and her husband, Jerry, Laurie Klotz and her husband, Michael and Liza Mercado and her fiance, Andrew Ratana; his mom, Engracia Mercado; brother, Father Leonardo Mercado; a sister, Maria Theresa Ul Haq; three grandchildren, Nicholas Poston, Alexander Poston and Sarah Klotz; mother-in-law, Felicidad Heraldo; and a host of nieces, nephews and brothers and sisters-in-law. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, and where a prayer service will be held 7 p.m. Thursday. A funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Interment Signal Hill Memorial Park.

MOLLEN
B. David Mollen, 81, of Richmond, died Tuesday, December 26, 2000. He is survived by his wife, Frances R. Mollen; his daughter, Debbie Plotnick; his son, Cliff Mollen; two brothers, Aleck and Alfred Mollen; two sisters, Lil Wolloch and Dorothy Kahn; four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 12:30 p.m. Thursday (today) at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave. Interment Sir Moses Montifiore Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Keneseth Beth Israel.

NAGEL
Wilbur L. Nagel, 86, of Midlothian, passed away December 25, 2000. He is survived by his brother, Leonard Nagel Sr.; his sons and their wives, Robert E. and Jennifer Nagel, Scott W. and Cathy Nagel; granddaughters, Nicole Best and Jennifer Embrey; and great-grandson, Christian Embrey. Private services will be held in Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Hospice of San Diego, 4311 Third Ave., San Diego, Calif. 92103.

NEWSOME
Robert James Newsome, age 81, died December 26, 2000. He was preceded in death by one son, William D. Newsome. He is survived by his wife, Daisy Belle Bradley Newsome of Emporia; five sons, Robert J. Newsome Jr. of Lancaster, S.C., Thomas E. Newsome of Hillsboro, N.C., Jerry W. Newsome of Burlington, N.C., Michael R. Newsome of Turbeville, S.C., Frankie J. Newsome of Grand Island, N.Y.; five sisters, Ada Belle Avent of Emporia, Laura Jane Smith, Edith L. Roughton and Bessie Mae Cooper, all of Roanoke Rapids, N.C., and Annie Woodruff of Emporia; one brother, Raymond T. Newsome of Eure, N.C.; 13 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, December 29, at the Echols Funeral Home Chapel, with interment to follow in the Greensville Memorial Cemetery with military honors. Family will receive friends Thursday (tonight) at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Family suggests memorials be made to the Calvary Baptist Church Memorial Fund.

Departed this life December 25, 2000, Leonard M. Payne Sr. of 2715 Griffin Ave. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Dorothy Mae Payne; two daughters, Lisa Thomas Walker and Nina V. Payne; five sons, Keith Edward Jackson, Pedro, Wayne, Leonard Jr., and Mark Payne; eight grandchildren, one great-granddaughter; one aunt, Susie M. Payne; several nieces, nephews and cousins; father-in-law, Samuel L. Robertson; one daughter-in-law, one son-in-law, three sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law, and other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Joseph Jenkins Jr. Funeral Home, 2011 Grayland Ave. Funeral 1 p.m. Friday, Fifth Baptist Church, where remains will lie in state one hour prior to funeral time. Dr. Earl M. Brown (Pastor). Interment Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Family and friends assemble at the church 12:45 p.m. Friday.

PRICE
Ms. Bernice Alma Price, age 86, of 1224 Evergreen Ave., departed this life December 24, 2000 at Chippenham Medical Center. She is survived by devoted nieces, Barbara Anne Price, Laura B. Hill and Mary Green, all of Richmond; three nephews, Douglas Holmes, Douglas Ward and Michael Ward; five great-nieces, Tiffany Ward, Toni Hill, Monica Ward, Shawanda Brown-Ward and Tisha Ward; seven great-nephews, Robert L. Price, Antonio M. Campbell, Dwayne L. Campbell, Willie Hill III, Shaun Hill, D.J. Ward and Telvin Ward; six great-great-nieces, nine great-great-nephews; a host of other relatives and friends, among them two devoted friends, Willie Ford and Eleanor Coats of Washington, D.C. Remains rest at the Chiles Funeral Home, 2100 Fairmount Ave., where funeral services will be held on Friday 11 a.m. with Dr. Darrell Rollins officiating. Interment Evergreen Cemetery.

QUICK
Margaret H. Quick, age 82, formerly of Huntmaster Dr., Midlothian, widow of John T. Quick Sr., passed away Tuesday, December 26, 2000. She was a former teacher, principal and education supervisor for the Henrico County School Board. Survivors include her sons, John T. Quick Jr., Midlothian, Kenneth R. Quick, Mathews County, Va.; daughter, Margaret L. Sapp, Coppell, Texas; and four grandchildren. Funeral services are private. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the American Cancer Society.

REMSBURG
Mrs. Vera Baron Remsburg, a resident of Abingdon, Va., died Tuesday, December 26, 2000 at the home of her sister, Mrs. Josephine B. DeShazo in Spencer, Va. She was a member of the Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church in Abingdon, where she served as an elder and on several committees. She was born September 4, 1920 in Raleigh County, West Virginia. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Brent Remsburg, a former town manager of Abingdon, Va.; her father, Mr. Joseph Baron; and mother, Mrs. Ella Baron. Survivors other than her sisters are two nephews, Tommy and Charley; two nieces, Julie and Helen Jo DeShazo. Mrs. Remsburg taught in the Washington County, Virginia school system for eight years before her retirement. Before coming to Washington County, she taught in Martinsville City schools, Longwood College as an instructor and assistant professor, Halifax County and Fairfax County. She taught a total of 40 years and seven months. Mrs. Remsburg received many awards and honors. While a teacher with the Washington County school system, Mrs. Remsburg was honored by the VPI & Su Chapter of Sigma Xi as the Outstanding Science Teacher of southwest Virginia. She received her B.S. from Longwood College and graduate of University of Virginia. Mrs. Remsburg was a member and officer of many organizations. Here in Washington County she was a member of the Booklovers Club where she was past president, president of the Abingdon Garden Club, she was a master gardner, the Abingdon Tree Committee, liaison between the Southwest Virginia Garden Club and the Barter Theatre for the Shakespearean Garden, served on the Virginia Highlands Festival Board and was a member of the Washington County Retired Teachers Association, she was awarded the Rotarian Paul Harris Fellow Award. She was Southwest District Chairman Arboreta and Botanical Garden. Mrs. Remsburg is a state and national life member, the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs, past president of the Va. Association of Garden Clubs, state chairman of the Bookreview Committee, past president of the Virginia Science Museum in Richmond and was instrumental in the biology section in Richmond, member of Alpha Zeta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International Society for Women Educators. Mrs. Remsburg was the past president of the Junior Academy of Science and Virginia Academy of Science. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, December 28, 2000 at the Old Well Christian Church in Spencer, Va. by Rev. Zeke Zanatos. A eulogy will be done by Dick Hensley. Mrs. Josephine B. DeShazo will have a memorial service in the spring at the home of Mrs. Remsburg in Abingdon, Va. for friends and loved ones. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy may be in the form of memorial contributions to the U.S.A. Fund Number 298, c/o the Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church, 136 East Main Street, Abingdon, Va. 24210. Campbell Funeral Home of Abingdon, Va., is in charge of arrangements.
