RICHARDSON
Deacon William Richardson, 92, of Powhatan, Va., departed this life December 24, 2000. He is survived by one son, Earl Richardson; daughter-in-law, Frances Richardson of Petersburg; two devoted sisters, Mary Eliza Bell and Beatrice Sheppard of Powhatan; seven nieces and nephews, Bernice Bates, Constance Hundley, William Sheppard, George Sheppard Jr., Robert Lee Sheppard, all of Powhatan, Barbara Hundley and Eva Wrights of Baltimore, Md.; a host of grand and great-grand-nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Robert Mealy Funeral Home, Goochland, Va. Funeral services will be held Friday, December 29, at 2 p.m. at St. James Baptist Church, Powhatan, Va. and where remains will lie in state one hour prior to funeral services. Rev. Lawrence Wilson Sr. officiating. Interment family cemetery.

RILEE
Marie B. "Rere" Rilee, age 65, died at Riverside Walter Reed Hospital December 26, 2000. Marie retired in 1997 from Crestar Bank and she was a member of Newington Baptist Church. Survivors include husband of 50 years, Amory P. Rilee; a son, Larry P. Rilee and wife, Lisa; three sisters, Hilda Hogge, Vernelle Salyer and Dorothy Walton; five brothers, Willard Bristow Sr., Robert Bristow, Raymond Bristow and Lum Bristow and Clarence Bristow; two grandsons, Devin Chase and Bryce Hunter Rilee; eight nieces and 17 nephews. Funeral services, conducted by the Reverends Mike Gray and Zack Finch, will be held Friday, 2:30 p.m. at Newington Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point, Thursday, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. In her memory, memorial contributions may be made to Newington Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 847, Gloucester, Va. 23061.

ROME
Philip deButts Rome, 54, died on Tuesday, December 26, 2000. He is survived by his wife, Vivian Gale Rome; and his children, Andrew deButts Rome and Jennifer Rome Bettis. Mr. Rome was an attorney with Williams, Mullen, Clark & Dobbins law firm, where he headed the Real Estate Section and served on the Board of Directors for numerous years. He served as Past Chairman of the Real Estate Section of the Richmond Bar Association and on the Board of Directors of the Henrico West Business Council. He received his law degree from the T.C. Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond, where he was a member of the McNeill Law Society and an editor of the Law Review. Mr. Rome served as a Trustee on the Board of Hampden-Sydney College, his undergraduate alma mater, and was named to their Athletic Hall of Fame in 1996. Mr. Rome was a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, where he was a former Senior Warden. He also served on the Board of the Massey Cancer Foundation and as the president of several neighborhood civic associations. The family will be receiving friends on Thursday, December 28, 2000 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Parham Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd. A memorial service will follow on Friday, December 29, at 11 a.m. at St. Matthew's Church, 1101 Forest Ave. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hampden-Sydney College, Hampden-Sydney, Va. 23943 in memory of Philip Rome.

STAGGERS
Zuline W. Staggers of 2918 Fendall Ave., formerly of 725 Northside Ave., departed this life Sunday, December 24, 2000. Left to cherish her memory are her mother, Kate Duggins; four sons, Herman (Valerie), Bruce H. Jr., Fred, Alton (Dionne); three daughters, Deloris S. Richardson, Geraline, Margaret A. Oliver (Darryl); seven grandchildren, Darryl, Melvin, Tyrell, Ashley, Devin, Christian and Lamar; one sister, Francena Azalea Staggers; and a host of relatives and friends. Professional services provided by Crawley Funeral Home, 3810 Meadowbridge Rd., where services will be held Friday, December 29, 2000 at 1 p.m. Rev. Preston L. Jordan officiating. Remains will be shipped to Lanes, S.C. for interment.

STANFIELD
Mary Dix Stanfield, 90, of Church Road, Va., died on Wednesday, December 27, 2000. She is survived by three sons, James E. Stanfield and wife, Shirley of Church Road, Donald T. Stanfield and wife, Patricia, and Reginald A. Stanfield and wife, Jean of Midlothian; one daughter, Mary V. "Ginger" Pfister and husband, Bob of Louisville, Ky.; 17 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren; two sisters, Zettie D. Holderby of Reidsville, N.C. and Virginia D. McKinney of Danville; and one brother, James A. Dix of Danville. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Friday, December 29, 2000 at Trinity United Methodist Church, Church Road, with Rev. Dr. Maurice Hancock, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home.

STEPPE
Mrs. Corinne Coffey Steppe, age 91, died Wednesday, December 27, 2000. She was the widow of the late John William Steppe, a member of Boulevard Methodist Church and a former member of Coles Point Methodist Church. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Warren Shelton; a son and daughter-in-law, Ted and Serena Steppe; four grandchildren and their spouses, Michael and Susie Shelton, Renee and Bruce Adams, Blair and Lynn Shelton, Dara and Michael Penkrot; and eight great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Westhampton Memorial Gardens followed by a memorial service at 1:30 p.m. at The Richmond Home for Ladies, 2620 Stuart Ave., in Richmond. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Richmond Home for Ladies, 2620 Stuart Ave., Richmond, Va. 23220. The West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

STROOP
Rose Davis Stroop, 84, of Harrisonburg, died on Wednesday, December 27, 2000 at Oak Lea Nursing Home, where she had been a resident the past seven years. She was born February 19, 1916 in the Frieden's Church area of Rockingham County and was the daughter of the late Theodore and Molly Riddle Davis. Rose lived all her life in the Harrisonburg area and was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church. She had worked at various stores in town and retired after 30 years at Carl's Pastry Shop in the Mick or Mack Store. On December 23, 1933, she married Gilbert Taft Stroop, who survives; also surviving are one daughter, Joyce Stroop Winters of Richmond; one sister, Minnie Blosser of Penn Laird; and one grandson. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday morning at the Kyger & Trobaugh Funeral Home in Harrisonburg by Revs. Donald Fridinger and Glen Langston. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens near Harrisonburg. The family will receive friends this evening from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to Oak Lea Nursing Home, 1475 Virginia Avenue or Otterbein United Methodist Church, 176 West Market Street, both in Harrisonburg, Va. 22801.

Departed this life on December 22, 2000, Anthony Dunken Suber. He is survived by his son, Anthony Lee Isaiah Suber; his loving parents, John and Goldie Suber; three siblings, Debra Carrington of Garner, N.C., Gail Williams and Kevin Suber of Los Angeles, Calif.; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Chiles Funeral Home, 2100 Fairmount Ave., where funeral services will be held Friday 1 p.m., with Rev. James Jackson officiating. Interment Roselawn Memory Gardens (Glen Allen). Ernest T. Sumpter Jr., age 40, of Brodnax, Va., died December 26, 2000. He is survived by his wife, Sue Clary Sumpter; two daughters, Jordan Elizabeth Sumpter and Stephanie Lynn Sumpter; his mother, Margie P. Fields and her husband, Cecil of South Hill; a brother, Charles Sumpter of Powhatan; and a sister, Sue Tan of Roanoke. Graveside funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday at La Crosse Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Williams Funeral Home, Lawrenceville, Va.

Joseph E. Taylor of Gladstone, Va., husband of the late Elizabeth K. Taylor, retired employee of C&O Railroad, died Tuesday, December 26, 2000. Funeral service 11 a.m. Friday at Driskill Funeral Chapel, Amherst, Va. (804) 946-5529. Visitation 7 to 8:30 p.m. today.

TOLER
Bessie Brown Toler, age 91, departed this life peacefully on December 22, 2000. She was preceded in death by her husband, Percy R. Toler Sr. She is survived by two daughters, Ella M. Toler and Bessie (Josephine) Smith; three sons, Percy Jr., Fred and Claude (Michael) Toler; 25 grandchildren, a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, one son-in-law, three daughters-in-law; a sister, Rosetta Smith of Newark, N.J.; and a host of other relatives and friends; one devoted nephew, Horace Brown. Robert Maurice Jean Ullman, architect, died Tuesday, December 26, 2000. Survivors include his beloved wife, Mary Martin Smithwick Ullman; a brother, Terry S. Ullman; and a niece, Robin U. Gordon. Gladys I. Walls, 97, of Varina, departed this life Tuesday, December 26, 2000. She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd L. Walls Sr. She is survived by her children, Elsie Rae of Emporia, Doris Lipscomb of Powhatan, Mildred Driscoll of Glen Allen, Floyd L. Walls Jr. of Charlottesville, Ellen Brown, Betty Thimsen and Norma Harlow, all of Varina; 24 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Walls was a member and past deaconess of Four Mile Creek Baptist Church. Remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday (today). Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the Four Mile Creek Baptist Church. Morris F. White Sr. of 2907 Barton Ave. died December 24, 2000. Surviving are his wife, Alma L. White; two sons, Morris F. Jr. and Roland C. White; four grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Marguerite "Marg" C. Winter of Richmond died suddenly December 25, 2000. She is survived by her brother-in-law, Taylor F. Campbell; niece, Suzanne C. Andrews and her husband, Joseph E. Andrews; nephew, William J. Campbell; two great-nephews, Taylor and Jordan; and two great-nieces, Kacy and Jessie. Helen V. Wolliver, age 70, died Tuesday, December 26, 2000. Clara Phelps Wood, 86, of Trenton, Georgia, formerly of Lynchburg, passed away Wednesday, December 27, 2000 in Trenton, Georgia. Born January 18, 1914 in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of the late Joseph W. and Jennie Walton Phelps. Mrs. Wood was retired from American Home Products and was a member of Grove Avenue Baptist Church in Richmond, Va. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Samuel Lile Wood and her son, Kermit Flynn Wood. Mrs. Wood is survived by four sons, Wayne Lyle Wood of Jacksonville, Fla., David Allen Wood of Trenton, Ga., Fred Douglas Wood of Laurenburg, N.C. and Samuel Lile Wood of Jamestown, Tenn.; three daughters, Joan Weigelhofer of Gum Springs, Va., Diana Wood of Lexington, S.C., and Mary Tustin of Lynchburg; two brothers, Marvin Phelps and Raymond Phelps, both of Richmond; 21 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren. She will be honored with a Service of Praise given for her by her family, Friday, December 29, 2000 at 1 p.m. at Whitten Timberlake Chapel by Dr. David Wood. We invite you to join us as we celebrate the gift our family was allowed to enjoy for many years, now she goes to heaven to rest at last. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home and other times at the home of her daughter, Mary, 121 Whispering Pines Court, Lynchburg.
