Robert C. Harnsberger, Bisquick creator, dies
Oct 07, 2001
Robert Conrad Harnsberger, a former vice president of advertising and public relations for Luray Caverns- who also is credited with creating the recipe for what later became one of America's most widely using baking products, Bisquick - died Oct. 2.
Mr. Harnsberger, 95, was buried Friday at Beahm's Chapel in Luray.
While working at the family-owned Page Milling Co., Mr. Harnsberger developed an all-purpose flour product call Quick Biscuit, which was sold to the company that later became General Mills, where it has since been marketed as Bisquick.
He later joined Luray Caverns, where he won many honors including being inducted into the Travel Industry Association of America's Hall of Leaders.
In addition, he served as mayor of Luray for five years and served on Town Council for 11 years.
He earned degrees from Kansas State University, the University of Wisconsin and Cornell University.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Lou James Harnsberger; two daughters, Jacqueline Lewis of Newport News and Nancy C. Hildebidle of Charleston, S.C., and a sister, Elizabeth H. Baughan of Luray.

Edward J. McGarry Jr. dies at 83
Jan 29, 2001
Chewing contentedly at the tip of an ever-present and well-seasoned pipe, Edward J. "Mac" McGarry Jr., longtime pressroom superintendent for Richmond Newspapers Inc., was never more at peace than when the presses started rolling.
"Newspaper work - it was in his blood, and he loved it," said Mr. McGarry's wife of 27 years, Dillie T. McGarry. "He loved the sound of the presses."
Mr. McGarry, of Richmond, died Friday after a long struggle with ALS. He was 83.
The sound of the presses that so captured McGarry's heart had been dear to him since before his service in Canadian Army during World War II.
He returned to his native Canada after the war; in 1947, he followed opportunity to Virginia and to the Richmond Times-Dispatch and The Richmond News Leader. "He was quick to say he worked for both [papers]," his wife said. "He said he got hassled by two managing editors every day."
At his retirement in 1982, Mr. McGarry was steadfast in the reasoning behind his departure. A veteran of past press conversions - the retrofitting or reconfiguring of a newspaper's presses - he said he'd simply had enough, Mrs. McGarry said.
A cartoon presented to him by the paper at his retirement pictured Mr. McGarry, who took pride in his Irish lineage, dressed inaccurately as a Scotsman.
But it was entirely accurate, Mrs. McGarry said, in its portrayal of him hurriedly nailing boards across the pressroom door to keep out unwelcome workers come to once again retrofit his presses.
In addition to his wife, Mr. McGarry is survived by his sons, Edward J. McGarry III and Michael Connally, both of Richmond, and his daughters, Elizabeth Trop of Virginia Beach; and Julie Holswade and Andrea C. Owen, both of Richmond.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Henrico County, with entombment following at Mount Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum.
