GRANLEY
Norma Sanders Granley, 77, an Alexandria community activist who helped organize disaster relief operations for the American Red Cross in the 1950s, and was a principal in the starting of the Meals on Wheels program for the Mount Vernon community, died January 4, 2001 at Inova Mount Vernon Hospital. Mrs. Granley, an Alexandria resident since 1950, was active in the Presbyterian Meeting House and later an elder and deacon at Mount Vernon Presbyterian Church, where she worked in its community outreach program. She was a founder and past chairman of the docent organization at Gunston Hall, and was on the Alexandria Committee of the National Society of Colonial Dames. She served on the boards of the Anne Lee Home, a retirement facility for women in Alexandria, and the United Community Ministries. Mrs. Granley, who was born in Hopewell, Va., was an honor graduate of Petersburg High School and attended Westhampton College of the University of Richmond. In 1985, she graduated from George Mason University with honors in history. She was the daughter of the late J. Lloyd and Daisy Sanders of Colonial Heights. Survivors include her husband of 42 years, Edwin C. Granley of Alexandria; a daughter, Sara Granley Becker; and three grandchildren, John, Sara and Evan Becker, of Atlanta, Ga.; a brother, Jerrell L. Sanders of North East, Md.; a niece, Katherine Stone of Richmond; and a nephew, J. Lloyd Sanders Jr. of Rising Sun, Md. The family has suggested that memorial donations be made to support research by the American Stroke Association, 4217 Park Place Court, Glen Allen, Virginia 23060-3329.

HITE
Field Mann Hite Sr., age 81, died Friday, January 19, 2001. Mr. Hite was a retired pharmacist and owned Hite's Drug Store in Goochland County. He graduated from John Marshall High School in 1938, completed MCV School of Pharmacy in 1947, was a veteran of WWII serving in North Africa and Italy. Mr. Hite was an avid golfer. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Peggy; and three children, Field Mann Jr., Sara Hite Dawes and Robert Gregory Hite; five grandchildren, Adam Matthew Dawes, April Marie Hite, Robert Andrew Hite, Christopher Thomas Waggener and Anna Kate Waggener. Family will receive friends Sunday, January 21, at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave., from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Graveside service at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Monday, January 22, at 12:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Research Foundation, 4600 Cox Rd., Suite 130, Glen Allen, Va. 23060 or Goochland Rescue Squad, Company #5, 23063.

HOCKELMAN
Alan W. Hockelman, 58, of Mechanicsville, passed away Thursday, January 18, 2001. He was predeceased by his father and mother, James W. and Dorothy H. Hockelman; and a brother, Donald Ray Hockelman. Alan is survived by a daughter, LaDonna Smith of Virginia Beach; three sons, Charles Sowers of Richmond, Martin Sowers of Brazil, and Troy Hockelman of Mechanicsville; a sister, Linda H. Farmer of Charlottesville; and four grandchildren. Remains rest at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee Davis Road, where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, and where a service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday with interment to follow in Oakwood Cemetery.

JORDAN
Virgil H. Jordan (Vee), LT. Col., U.S. Army (retired), WWII veteran who saw action on Iwo Jima, 80, died in Richmond Friday, January 19, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Cora-Semmes Curtis Jordan; his children, Cora-Semmes J. Bryce, Carol J. Norris and husband, Steve of Richmond, Susan J. Stanton and her husband, Paul of Coral Gables, Fla., Virgil R. (Randy) Jordan of Portland, Ore., Alexander R. (Sandy) Jordan of Nashville, Tenn.; and grandchildren, Stephanie Sweeney, Susanne Sweeney, John Bryce and David Norris, all of Richmond; a sister, Elizabeth J. Hutson of Lovington, N.M. Mr. Jordan was a retired manager with CSX, a past president of Bon Air Rotary Club and the Downtown Optimist Club, also a member of Willow Oaks Country Club. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where the family will receive friends Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, 10 a.m. at St. Bridget's Catholic Church. Interment 2:30 p.m. in Warrenton Town Cemetery. The family requests donations in lieu of flowers to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, P.O. Box 50, Memphis, Tenn. 38101 or St. Bridget's Catholic Church.

MANDELL
Bernice S. Mandell of Richmond passed away January 18, 2001. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Robert L. Mandell; children, Susan and Richard Friedman, Linda Mandell Cain, Barry and Debbi Mandell; grandchildren, Ricky, Brian and Todd Friedman, Jamie and Nicole Mandell. Mrs. Mandell was a devoted wife and a loving mother and grandmother. Graveside services will be conducted 1 p.m. Sunday at Greenwood Cemetery, Patterson Avenue. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 4600 Cox Road, Suite 130, Glen Allen, Va. 23060.

NORMENT
Velma Clawson Norment, 87, of Hanover, the widow of Lemuel E. Norment, passed away Saturday, January 20, 2001. She is survived by her daughter, Doris N. and her husband, Charles M. Culley of Hanover; a sister, Mary S. Dixon of Mechanicsville; a grandson, Charles M. Culley Jr. and his wife, Margaret; two grandchildren, Sarah E. Culley and Melissa L. Grimmer, all of Urbana. Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Signal Hill Memorial Park. Memorial gifts may be made to Fork Episcopal Church Organ Fund, 12566 Old Ridge Rd., Doswell, Va. 23047 or Lebanon United Methodist Church, 8492 Peaks Rd., Hanover, Va. 23069. The Reid Funeral Home, Ashland, is in charge of arrangements.

ORTIZ
Anna Ortiz, 80, of Petersburg, formerly of Bellersoe, N.Y., went to be with the Lord January 19, 2001. She was the widow of James Edward Ortiz and is survived by her daughter, Ann Marie Booher of New York; son, John H. Ortiz of Chesterfield; brother, Herbert Deigl of Florida; five grandchildren, and one great-grandson. Her remains rest at Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. (Rt. 10), where the family will receive friends Sunday from 2 to 4 to 7 to 9 p.m. Also, where her funeral service will be held 7 p.m. Sunday. Interment will be in Pinelawn Cemetery, Long Island, N.Y. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to St. Francis Home, 2511 Wise St., Richmond, Va. 23225-3952.

PRICE
Lacy McNeill Price, 84, of Richmond, departed this life January 18, 2001. She is survived by three nieces, Etonya McNeill Beard, Faye Garness Barksdale and Stephanie Garness Jackson; two great-nieces, one great-nephew, one sister-in-law, other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Walter J. Manning Funeral Home, 700 N. 25th Street, where funeral services will be held Monday, 1 p.m. Dr. Morris Henderson officiating. Burial Forest Lawn Cemetery.

RUFFER
Dr. William A. Ruffer, 76, of Richmond, retired professor at Indiana State University, died January 19, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 54 years. Marianne S. Ruffer; daughter, Christa Silvestri and her husband, Patsy of Mt. Arlington, N.J.; son, William C. Ruffer and his wife, Rita Dattola of New York, N.Y.; two sisters, Paula Madderen and Jean Clark, both of Wallingford, Conn.; also two grandchildren, Matthew and Courtney Anderson of Mt. Arlington, N.J. Dr. Ruffer was a member of Willow Oaks Country Club where he was an avid golfer and directed a duplicate bridge club. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII. The family will receive friends Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Rd., where a memorial service will be held Monday, 4 p.m. Interment private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the American Cancer Society or the U.S. Olympic Committee.

SCHULTZ
Dorothy Hicks "Dottie" Schultz, 76, of Midlothian, formerly of Raleigh, N.C., widow of Fred A. Schultz Sr., died January 3, 2001. She is survived by one daughter, Peggy S. Guin of Midlothian; two sons, Fred A. Schultz Jr. of Knightdale, N.C. and Richard A. Schultz of Wake Forest, N.C.; one brother, Toby Hicks of Raleigh, N.C.; three sisters, Odesta Stokes of Raleigh, N.C., Frances Hilliard of Garner, N.C. and Anna Mae Baker of Fayetteville, N.C.; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Mrs. Schultz was preceded in death by one daughter, Mary Jane Schultz Jackson. She was a Wolf Pack fan and employee. Funeral services were held January 7, 2001 in Garner, N.C.

Lydia Smith, 78, of Richmond, died January 19, 2001. She is survived by her sons, Arthur, John, Jerry and Ricky Smith; daughters, Jane Perkins and Karen Abrahamian; and their spouses; 15 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson. She was a member of Courts of Praise Church. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull St. Rd., where the family will receive friends 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, and where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday. Departed this life January 18, 2001, Mrs. Antionette Hopkins Smith in Georgia, formerly of Midway Rd., Richmond. She was preceded in death by her husband, John E. Smith. She is survived by her daughter, Christine A. Smith; one son, John Lewis Smith; four grandchildren, one great-granddaughter; one sister, Fannie Sampson; host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Joseph Jenkins Jr. Funeral Home, 2011 Grayland Ave. Funeral Monday, 1 p.m. at St. James Baptist Church, 401 Blair Rd., Goochland County, Va., where remains will lie in state one hour prior to funeral time. Rev. Thomas Blake (Pastor). Rev. Leonard Davis officiating. Interment church cemetery. Family and friends assemble at the church 12:45 p.m. Monday.

SNOWA
Elizabeth Myrtle Snowa, 82, of Sandston, died Friday, January 19, 2001. She was the daughter of the late David and Anne Jones and was preceded in death by her husband, William C. Snowa. She is survived by two sons, Edwin and Gerald Salmon; a stepdaughter, Linda Moritz; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Mrs. Snowa was a retired employee of the Liggett Myers Tobacco Co. and a member of the Varina Baptist Church. Remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, and where services will be held 11 a.m. Monday. Interment 2 p.m. Monday at the Menokin Baptist Church Cemetery, Warsaw, Va.

Thomas Cary Toots Jr., age 46, of 3615 Conway St., went to be with the Holy Angels on Thursday, January 18, 2001. He is survived by his children, Tamara, Toni, Tammy and Holly; his devoted fiancee, Barbara M. Colon. Mr. Toots was a Vietnam Marine veteran. His remains will be reposing on Monday, January 22, 2001 at K.L. Jordan Funeral Service, 5008 Nine Mile Rd., where the funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 24, 2001 at the funeral home. VALENTINE
Michael Dee Valentine, of the 1200 block of W. Ocean View Ave. in Norfolk, died January 18, 2001 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. He was born June 25, 1953 in Wauseon, Ohio. He was a graduate of Onsted High School, Onsted, Mich. and Western Michigan University, where he received a degree in theatre. Mr. Valentine was a member of The Hampton Roads Men's Chorus and served as President of the Board of Directors. He founded and directed the area's only senior theatre troupe, The Beyond Prime Time Players. Michael also appeared in stage productions at the Little Theatre of Virginia Beach and Virginia Musical Theatre. He is survived by his best friend and loving companion of 19 years, Milton G. Chappell of Norfolk; his beloved mother, Mary Jane Valentine of Belen, N.M.; his brother, Jerry Valentine and wife, Linda, of Morenci, Mich.; his brother, Dennis Valentine and wife, Diana, of Englewood, Fla.; his sister, Sue Ann Boilini and husband, Louis of Pagosa Springs, Colo.; his extended family, H. Wayne Chappell of Hopewell, Va., Bonnie and Thomas A. Moody of Chester, Va., Chuck and Kelly Chappell of Disputanta, Va., Chrissy Chappell of Hopewell, Va.; many loving nieces and nephews, special friends, and two cool cats, Rupert and Roxy. A memorial service will be held Sunday, February 4 at 4 p.m. at the Unitarian Church of Norfolk, 739 Yarmouth St., Norfolk, Va. Memorial donations can be made to any AIDS organization, or a charity of your choice. Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk, Chapel, is handling the arrangements.
