BATTLE
Mrs. Lillian Greene Battle went to be with the Lord June 9, 2002. Lillian is survived by her devoted husband, Tommie O. Battle Sr.; loving son, Tommie O. Battle Jr. and wife, Geneva Battle; grandchildren, Tommie O. Battle III and Karmin A. Battle; an adopted grandson, Cholin "Joe" Tho; godson, Ralph Sharpe Jr.; a loving brother and sister, Joseph Greene (Roberta), Mary Hite (William Sr.); three sisters-in-law, Julia White (Robert), Ethel Megginson and Mamie Fenner; a multitude of loving nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, among them two devoted nieces, Pamela Hite Carter and Debbie Hite; and a devoted cousin, Mary Christopher; and a host of other relatives and friends. Lillian will forever be in our hearts and we thank God for the time He bestowed her to us. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Sts., where the family will receive friends Wednesday, June 12, 7 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 13, 1 p.m. at Garland Avenue Baptist Church, 2700 Garland Ave. Rev. Clifford B. Chambliss Jr., pastor, officiating. Interment in Maury Cemetery. After 12 noon Thursday, remains will rest in the above-named church until hour of service. Relatives and friends attending funeral services assemble at the church Thursday, 12:30 p.m.

BENNETT
Nelson L. Bennett Sr., 71, of Chester, passed away Sunday, June 9, 2002. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey T. Bennett; sister, Hazel Bennett; and brothers, Jackie and Herbert Bennett. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn B. Bennett; son, Nelson L. Bennett Jr.; daughters, Duane Robertson and her husband, Robby and Beverly Gunn and her husband, Charles; stepdaughters, Sheri Yaros and her husband, Jack and Kim Brown; brothers, Harvey T. "Blackie" Bennett and his wife, Patricia and Floyd V. Bennett and his wife, Carolyn of Texas; seven grandsons and one great-granddaughter. Born in Chesterfield County on July 21, 1930, he graduated from Thomas Dale High School in 1947 and attended night school at RPI. He worked for E.I. DuPont and then joined the U.S. Navy, from which he was honorably discharged in 1952. Then he became a salesman for McCoy Motor Company, Chester. The dealership was purchased by Ross Ford in 1962, and he was promoted through management up to president. In 1980, Ross Ford became Bennett Ford, where he continued his service until 1998 when he retired to enjoy time with his family. He was respected in the community and was an active board member for numerous organizations. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends Tuesday and Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m., and where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday. Interment to follow in Sunset Memorial Park. Flowers are welcome or memorial contributions may be made to the Massey Cancer Center for Leukemia Research, P.O. Box 980037, Richmond, Va. 23298-0037.

BRICE
Charles G. (Charlie) Brice died on June 10, 2002 at the Bon Secours Richmond Community Hospital, Richmond, Va. Thomasson's Funeral Service is in charge of all arrangements.

CROWDER
H. Lewis Crowder, age 73, of Chase City, died June 10, 2002 at his residence. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, member of Chase City American Legion Post #43, Masonic Lodge #119, Chase City Ruritan Club and deacon and trustee of Mt. Horeb Baptist Church. He was an organizer and president of Chase City Medical Clinic; organizer, charter member, president and life member of Chase City Rescue Squad; former president of Peoples Bank and Trust and retired in 1985 as senior vice president and branch manager of Central Fidelity Bank (Wachovia) in Chase City. He was a former member of the CMH Board of Trustees, Board of Directors of AAA of Tidewater Virginia, board member of Estes Community Center, board member of SVCC Foundation, treasurer and board member of South Central Fair Association. He was Outstanding Jaycees Citizen in 1970 and was Chase City Citizen of the Year in 1980 and inducted into the Ruritan Hall of Fame in 2002. He is survived by his wife, Alice McPeters Crowder; two daughters, Debra Crowder and husband, David of Chase City, Norma Wood and husband, Jerry of Chase City; one son, Michael Crowder and wife, Sandra of Mechanicsville; one sister, Margaret C. Crenshaw and husband, Edward of Courtland; five grandchildren, Cory and Ethan Crowder and Lauren Wood of Chase City, Caroline and Eric Crowder of Mechanicsville. Friends may call at Wood Funeral Service, Chase City, 7 to 8:30 p.m. tonight. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Horeb Baptist Church, with the Rev. A.C. Wells Jr. and the Rev. DUNAND
Madeleine H. deCastella Dunand, age 97, died at Sanders Nursing Home in Gloucester on June 2, 2002 with her family at her side. She was Roman Catholic and was born, raised and spent most of her life in Geneva, Switzerland. In her later years, she came to Baltimore to live with her daughter and son-in-law and then spent her last years at Sanders Nursing Home, where she found much love and compassion from the staff and was under the very special care of Dr. James Dudley. She was the widow of Jacques Viziot Dunand who died in 1934 at the age of 29. She raised a daughter but never remarried. Madame Dunand worked many years as a secretary for the League of Nations in Geneva. She traveled extensively, was an avid reader and a superb chef, and we remember her for her quick and brilliant mind and her sharp wit. We shall miss her terribly. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Anne-Marie Dunand Rosendorf and her husband, Dr. Stanley Bernard Rosendorf; a grandson, Michael Charles Rosendorf, an attorney in Baltimore, Md.; a granddaughter, Carole Marie Rosendorf Montgomery, a registered nurse, and her husband, John W. Montgomery Jr., an attorney in Richmond, Va.; great-grandson: John “Jack” W. Montgomery III of Richmond. A gathering of friends and memorial service, conducted by the Reverend Leo Guarnieri, will be held 4 p.m. Friday, June 14, 2002 in the chapel of Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point. Interment will be held at a later date in Geneva, Switzerland. Arrangements by Hogg Funeral Home and Crematory.

DUNAWAY
Clyde Harold Dunaway, age 74, of Keysville, died Tuesday, June 11, 2002. He was a retired Foreman with Burlington Industry. Surviving are his wife, Evelyn D. Dunaway; two sons and daughters-in-law, Lenny and Peggy Dunaway, Ricky and Sheila Dunaway; four daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Dan Danielson, Pam and John Haase, Pat and Bruce Woerner, Kay and Odie Shelton; one sister, Jacqueline D. Stansberry; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Browning Funeral Home, with interment in the Eureka Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Browning Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

HAWKINS
Carol Aston Hawkins, 55, died June 10, 2002, of complications from brain surgery. Born in Richmond, Virginia, the daughter of Carol Parham Hawkins and the late Edgar Marvin Hawkins Jr. She was raised in Danville, Virginia; Coldwater, Michigan; and Darien, Connecticut. She graduated from Darien High School and attended Averett College and the Mary Hitchcock School of Nursing from which she graduated. In nursing she found her calling. She worked as a maternity nurse for hospitals in Monterrey, California, and Denver, Colorado, for a number of years. In 1997 she moved to Petersburg, Virginia, her mother's home town. She was very active in the Covenant Presbyterian Church as secretary, parish nurse, parishioner and beloved friend. Besides her mother, she is survived by two brothers and their wives, Val and Dottie Hawkins of Alexandria, Virginia and Ted and Christine Hawkins of Darien, Connecticut; a niece, Eleanor Hawkins of Philadelphia; four nephews, Val Hawkins of London, England, Thomas Hawkins of Alexandria, Chance Hawkins of San Francisco, California and Andrew Hawkins of Austin, Texas. Carol's loving heart, sense of humor and beautiful smile will be greatly missed by family and friends. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 13 at the Covenant Presbyterian Church in Petersburg at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Covenant Church, 201 Walnut Blvd., Petersburg, Va. 23805. The family is being served by the J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home in Petersburg.

HELLAMS
Mrs. Doris Ellenburg Hellams, born January 23, 1926, peacefully passed away in the loving presence of her son and daughter-in-law on Monday, June 10, 2002, while residing at the Manorhouse at Belgrade in Richmond, Virginia. Mrs. Hellams was born in Greensboro, Ga. to Mr. and Mrs. John Walter Ellenburg. After graduating from the Appalachian State Women's College, she married Mr. Ralph Donaldson Hellams of Laurens, S.C., a gentleman she savored for 49 years of matrimony until his passing of April 13, 1998. Mrs. Hellams earned her Master's degree in education from VCU and subsequently taught at Maybeury Elementary School and worked as a librarian several years before her retirement. She was an active member of ADK throughout this time and for many years thereafter. Mrs. Hellams and her husband were active at First Baptist Church for almost two decades and later attended Bon Air Baptist Church for over two decades. Her activities while at Bon Air Baptist included the Curling Sunday School, the Women's Missionary Union, The Prime Timers and The Golden Notes. She also enjoyed participating in the church library. Mrs. Hellams is preceded in death by her brother, Mr. Ernest Ellenburg (December 24, 1985), her precious and beloved daughter, Susan Elizabeth Hellams M.D. (October 3, 1987), her husband, Mr. Ralph Donaldson Hellams (April 13, 1998). Mrs. Hellams is survived by her son, Ralph Donaldson Hellams Jr. M.D.; daughter-in-law Morgen Leigh Hellams; granddaughter, Danielle Lillian Hellams (age 15); three grandsons, Ralph Donaldson Hellams III (age 5), Matthew Hunter Hellams (age 3) and David Christopher Hellams (age 8 months). Her nieces include Mrs. Debra Anderson of Dalton, Ga. and Mrs. Lisa Arnold of Albany, Ga. Her nephews include Mr. John Ellenburg of Sasser, Ga. and Mr. Jeff Ellenburg of Satellite Beach. Fla. A viewing will be held on Wednesday, June 12 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Parham Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd. A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 13 at Bon Air Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Hollywood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to either The Music Ministry, c/o Bon Air Baptist Church, 253 Buford Rd., Richmond, Va. 23235 or The Susan Elizabeth Hellams M.D. Neurosurgery Memorial Fund, VCU-MCV Foundation, Box 631, 1200 E. HONEYCUTT
Billy Russell Honeycutt, formerly of Chester, Va., died June 8, 2002. Mr. Honeycutt was retired from Chesterfield County Parks and Recreation. He was a Baptist and a member of Chester Masonic Lodge No. 94. He is survived by his wife, Geneva A. Honeycutt; three sons and their wives, Russell and Tina Honeycutt of Coal City, Ill., Fred and Kim Gipson of Big Springs, Texas, Rick and Ronda of Odessa, Texas; two brothers, Andy and Ray Honeycutt; one sister, Doris Iverson, all of Stanley, N.C.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be conducted Thursday, June 13, 2002, at 11 a.m. in Dale Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the Chesterfield Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son tonight (Wednesday) from 7 to 8:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Chester Masonic Lodge No. 94.

HUDNALL
Mary Blackwell Hudnall, 101, died June 10, 2002. She was a member of Fairfields Baptist Church. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Carolina H. and Robert J. Manning of Davidson, N.C.; grandchildren, Laura Manning Riley, Mary Alice Mitchell, John Snowden Manning; great-grandchild, James Grady Mitchell. Funeral services 2 p.m. Thursday at Fairfields Baptist Church, Burgess. Interment Roseland Cemetery, Reedville. Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Hudnall's home, 6602 Northumberland Hwy., Heathsville. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Fairfields Baptist Church, Burgess, or Mid-County Rescue Squad, Heathsville.

HURST
Paige West Wise Hurst, 80, a former resident of Waverly, Va., died Monday, June 10, 2002 at Westminster Retirement Home in Dover, Del. A native of Ivor, Va., she was the daughter of the late Livie T. West and Regina Duke West and wife of the late Chesley Gerald Wise Sr. and the late Lawrence F. Hurst Sr. Mrs. Hurst was a graduate of Maury High School in Norfolk, a member of Waverly Baptist Church and Alpha Chapter No. 1, Order of the Eastern Star, Petersburg. She had worked as a secretary for the Georgia State Baptist Convention while residing in Atlanta, had lived in Raleigh, N.C. where she managed a motel, and also had lived in Charlotte, N.C. for a number of years, having moved there from Norfolk, Va. where she had been married and started her family. She is survived by two sons, Chesley G. Wise Jr. and his wife, Carol of Dover, Del., Lawrence F. Hurst Jr. of Pinehurst, N.C.; and one grandson, Thomas C. Wise of Newark, Del. They knew her to be a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 14, 2002 at 2 p.m. at Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield. Interment will follow at Waverly Cemetery, Waverly, Va. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Waverly Rescue Squad, Waverly, Va. 23890.

KELLAM
Henry Thomas Kellam, 72, died June 8, 2002. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anne Kellam. Survivors include his sister, Harryette Thomas; two sons, Thomas Howard Kellam and his wife Tracey and Steven Wilson Kellam and his wife, Sherri; three grandchildren, Dustin, Isabelle and Lauren Kellam. A memorial service will be held June 12 at 1 p.m. at Bon Air Presbyterian Church. Memorial donations may be made to the Bon Air Presbyterian Church Building Fund or S.C.A.N.

LEACH
Geraldine Friend Leach of Chester died June 10, 2002. She is survived by her husband, William F. Leach; two daughters, Leslie Ann Peppers of Chester and Janie Leach Imgrund of Poquoson, Va.; mother, Vesta Brookeover of Parkersburg, W.Va.; sister, Sharon Willis of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; four brothers, Denzil Carl Friend of Newton Falls, Ohio, Donald Brookeover of Elizabeth, W.Va., Dwaine Brookeover of Colville, Wash., Dwight Brookeover of Parkersburg, W.Va.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. MacDONOUGH
Gertrude W. MacDonough entered into eternal rest on June 10, 2002. She is survived by her husband, John Edward MacDonough; three children, Bryan Tevlin MacDonough, John Webster Scheid and Peter Jeffery MacDonough; a daughter-in-law, Frederica Palumbo MacDonough; a son-in-law, William Charles Scheid; and four grandchildren, Christine Marie and Heather Kay and Bradley John and Todd Webster. Mrs. MacDonough graduated from Smith College, Northampton, Massachusetts. She earned her Master's Degree from the University of Arizona (Flagstaff), and her Certificate for Doctorate from the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Va. A Funeral Mass will be Friday, June 14, 2002, 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with Fr. Walter Lewis officiating. Burial to follow in Westhampton Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Thursday evening, June 13, 2002 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 9505 Gayton Rd., Richmond, Va. A Christian Wake Service will be at 7 p.m. Mourners are requested to please omit floral displays and, in lieu of flowers, it is suggested contributions be made in her name to the General Scholarship of Virginia State University, Petersburg, Va. Arrangements are provided by E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights.

MANSINI
Dorothy M. Mansini of Richmond died Sunday, June 2, 2002. She is survived by her companion of 30 years, Jesse Sudsberry. Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at Riverview Cemetery.

MEAGHER
Joanne Pemberton Meagher, 39, of Richmond, died Tuesday, June 11, 2002. She is survived by her husband, Tim Meagher; three sons, Sean, Nicholas and Kevin; her mother, Mary Anne Pemberton; a sister and brother-in-law, Dyanne and Glenn Wilson; two brothers, Stuart and Bill Pemberton. Mrs. Meagher was actively involved in the Lakeside Little League for 15 years. Her family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd., where services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday. Interment Greenwood Memorial Gardens. All of the many that loved her wish to thank God for the gift of her life.

NICHOLS
Dr. Stuart E. Nichols Jr., 66, former president of the New York District Branch, American Psychiatric Association, passed away on June 6, 2002 after a long bout with heart disease. A graduate of Benedictine High School, the Virginia military Institute and the Medical College of Virginia, Dr. Nichols practiced in New York throughout his life. As founder of the Gay and Lesbian Psychiatrists of New York (1982), Dr. Nichols was much admired and respected for his courage, leadership and innovation in his efforts for the humane treatment of gay and lesbian patients. In his psychiatric practice he specialized in the treatment of patients who suffered from substance abuse and HIV. Dr. Nichols is survived by two sisters, Miriam and Ann Nichols of Richmond; and his devoted companion of 27 years, Pedro Garcia. There will be a memorial service in New York at a later date.
