GORDON
Minnie Sue Gordon, 98, of Richmond, widow of Sam Y. Gordon, died Monday, May 20, 2002. She is survived by her sister, Margaret Young; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Gordon was a dedicated member of the Eastern Star. Her gift of music was lovingly shared with everyone she knew. Her remains rest at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee Davis Rd., where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Highland Springs United Methodist Church. Interment Washington Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Highland Springs United Methodist Church.

GRIFFITH
Donald B. "Griff" Griffith Sr., 65, of Powhatan, died May 19, 2002. He is survived by two sons, Donald B. Griffith Jr. of Powhatan, Mark Griffith of Chesterfield; three daughters, Tammy Smith of Powhatan, Kim Frank of Chesterfield, Michelle Mares of Chesapeake; two brothers, Roger Griffith of Luray, David Griffith of Coeburn; two sisters, Carolyn Gouge, Norma Porter, both of Tennessee; and six grandchildren. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Hwy. (Rt. 60), Powhatan and where services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday. Interment Powhatan Community Cemetery.

Virginia L. Hines, 86, of La Crosse, died May 20, 2002. Predeceased by a son, Herbert A. "Fred" Hines and survived by a daughter, Mary Anne Bennett of Staunton; a son, Raye B. Hines of La Crosse; two grandchildren, Gretchen H. Hayes and John H. Hines, both of La Crosse; and two great-grandchildren, Anne Lee and Jimmy Bennett. Funeral service 11 a.m. Wednesday at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home. Interment Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation Tuesday 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Funeral Home. HOLMES
Bettyjeane Gibson "Betsy" Holmes, 77, of Dublin, passed away Thursday, May 16, 2002 in the Pulaski Community Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Charles Holmes Sr. She was the daughter of the late Beatrice Barber Gibson and Col. Robert Lee Gibson of Covington, Va. Mrs. Holmes was an active member of the Dublin United Methodist Church, a graduate of Hollins University, traveled extensively with her husband prior to his death and was a devoted mother and grandmother. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Catharine Holmes Hubbard and husband, Richard L. Hubbard, Eastville, Va. and Beth Holmes Smith and husband, William F. Smith, Springfield, Va.; one son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Joseph Charles Holmes Jr. and Beth Ann Holmes, Dublin, Va.; six grandsons, Richard Lee Hubbard, John Philip Hubbard, Scott Holmes Hubbard, Christopher Robert Smith, Kevin Joseph Smith and Joseph Charles Holmes III; one granddaughter, Laura Elizabeth Holmes; sister-in-law, Ann Cabell Holmes, Maryland; two nieces and one nephew. A memorial service was held Sunday, May 19, 2002 at 3 p.m. from the Dublin United Methodist Church, with Rev. Mike Travis officiating. A private family interment was held following the service at the Holmes Family Cemetery in Newbern, Va. The family received friends prior to the memorial service at the church on Saturday afternoon from 4 to 7 p.m. at the home of Dr. Joseph C. Holmes Jr., 5418 Ridgeview Way, Dublin, Va. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Dublin United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 577, Dublin, Va. 24084. Arrangements by Stevens Funeral Home, Pulaski, Va.

Benjamin Franklin Jackson of Richmond departed this life Monday, May 20, 2002. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Streets. Funeral notice later.

JELLIE
Violet Ethel Jellie, 84, of Manassas, Va., died May 20, 2002. She was born May 20, 1918 in Mineral, Va., daughter of the late Timothy Hawes Shealor and Hassie Dora Shealor. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William Lewis Jellie. Survivors include her daughters, Dora M. Foster of Fairfax Station, Shirley A. Robertson of Manassas and Rosa Lee Richards of Culpeper; son, Lewis C. Jellie of Manassas; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Moser Funeral Home, Warrenton, Va., where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday. Interment Hillcrest Memory Gardens, Jeffersonton. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer's Association.

Departed this life May 18, 2002, Mrs. Virginia Criss Jones of 300 W. Franklin Street. She is survived by first cousins, Russell C. Brown, Ida M. Moss, Betty E. Fitzgerald, Janet Ross and Lille Jackson. She also leaves to cherish her memory a host of relatives and friends, including Salley Chandlier, Sara Goins, Francis Criss, Lee Pleasants Jr., Fenibell Milford, Connie Tibbs, Norvella Brown, Thelma Hunter, Bessie Daniels, Evelyn Johnson, Teri Jones and Catherine Hubba. Remains rest at Joseph Jenkins Jr. Funeral Home, 2011 Grayland Ave. Funeral Wednesday, May 22, 2002 at 1 p.m. at Sixth Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 14 W. Duval Street, where remains will lie in state one hour prior to funeral time. Rev. John E. Johnson Jr. (pastor) officiating. Interment May 23, 2002, Quantico National Cemetery. LIGON
John Robert Ligon, formerly of Mechanicsville, died Sunday, May 19, 2002. He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Haas Ligon; and is survived by his daughter, Karen Barham; his daughter, Rebecca Crowder and her husband, Robert; and his loving brother, George Ligon. He served in the Army during WWII, retired from William Byrd Press, and was a long-standing member of the Richmond Christadelphian Community. Arrangements will be private, and memorials may be made to Hospice of Central Virginia.

LOUGHRIDGE
John Marvin Loughridge, 84, of Cypress Village, Fla., passed away peacefully May 16, 2002, surrounded by his wife and daughters. He was born September 5, 1917 in Prince George County, Va., and moved to Wilmington, Del. in 1956 until his retirement in 1980. He then retired in Palm Coast, Fla. before moving to Jacksonville in 2000. John retired after 40 years of office management with Hercules, Inc. He was a warrant officer in the Merchant Marines and was a member of the Baptist faith. Family members include his wife, Christine Bishop Loughridge; daughters, Sandra Parkes of Atlantic Beach, Fla. and Tonna (Michael) Flory of Tallahassee, Fla.; brothers, C.C. Loughridge of Fredericksburg, Va. and J.L. Loughridge of Waverly, Va.; sister, Florence Floridia of Marion, Ohio and her grandchildren, Richard Parkes of Atlantic Beach, Kelly Wilson of Atlantic Beach, Danielle Tharpe of Tallahassee, Dustin Flory of Tallahassee and Dayson Flory of Tallahassee. Private family visitation was held at Quinn-Shalz, a Family Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, May 24 at 10 a.m. in the Immanuel Baptist Church of Colonial Heights, Va. with the Reverend David Angel and the Reverend Jerry Parker officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Community Hospice of Northeast Florida or to the American Cancer Society. MANESS
Helen R. Maness, 88, of Chesapeake, Va., widow of William R. Maness, passed away Sunday, May 19, 2002 in the home of her devoted daughter, Joyce M. Spivey and son-in-law, Owen H. Spivey of Chesapeake. Also surviving are her daughter, Carole M. Parker and husband, Tom Parker of Illinois; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. (Rt. 10). A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday in Dale Memorial Park. MATTHEWS
Charles E.L. Matthews Sr., age 85, of Mechanicsville, born in Hot Springs, Va., had his prayers answered by the Lord on May 20, 2002. He was preceded in death by his wife, Emma Lee Matthews. He was a retiree of Charles H. Fleet and Assoc. Surveying Co. During WWII, he served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Transport Command in Alaska. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Charles E.L. Matthew Jr. and Joyce Matthews; his daughter and son-in-law, Helen E. Stanley and Marvin Stanley; his daughter, Laura A. Matthews; one brother and one sister, Robert Matthews and Ruby Wolfe, both of West Virginia; and six grandchildren, Robert, Angela, Shawn, Jason, Melissa and Bryan. Remains rest at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd., where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, and where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, 2002. MATTHEWS
Margaret Hundley Matthews, 89, of Chesterfield, went to be with the Lord May 19, 2002. She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Harry Matthews and is survived by her daughter, Roselle Thornton and her husband, Larry; son, Donald G. Dawson and his wife, Lib of Winston-Salem, N.C.; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and a great-niece, Dell Stuckey and her husband, Billy of Pensacola, Fla. She was especially close to her granddaughter, Deborah Richter and her husband, Bruce; great-grandson, Justin; granddaughter, Susan Gillis and her husband, Gary; great-granddaughter, Anne-Harrison Beck; and grandson, Michael Thornton and his wife, Susan and great-grandchildren, Kali and Reece. The family will receive friends at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd. from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Centenary United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Centenary United Methodist Church Building Fund, 411 E. Grace St., Richmond, Va. 23220.

Rebecca Ann Roberson (Becky), age 55, of Richmond, passed away May 19, 2002. Survivors include her husband, Stanley Richard Roberson; her sons, Jay Kay, Edward and Michael Stevens; three grandchildren, Jay Kay Jr., Christy and Dylan Stevens; and a host of immediate family members. She retired as a machine operator from Philip Morris after 30 years of service. The family will receive friends at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Woodrow A. Rodriguez, 81, of Richmond, Va., died May 19, 2002. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Beatrice H. Rodriguez; son, Rev. Sidney E. Rodriguez and his wife, Susan of Skipwith; daughter, Connie Rodriguez Ph.D. of New Orleans, La.; granddaughter, two great-grandchildren; four sisters, one brother, two half-sisters, two half-brothers, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was a WWII veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of the IAM Local No. 10. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Rd. Graveside services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the United Veterans Section at Greenwood Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
