Edith Shultz Williams
Apr 12, 2003
A memorial service for Edith Shultz Williams, a longtime Richmond actress, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Philippi Christian Church in Deltaville.
Mrs. Williams performed in a number of local productions, including the first stage show at the former Swift Creek Mill Playhouse in 1965.
She died Tuesday at the age of 78.
Mrs. Williams, who held a degree in drama from the University of Georgia, came to Richmond in the 1950s.
"She was an excellent performer and had a great jazz voice," said Buddy Callahan, a former president and co-founder of Swift Creek Mill Playhouse. "Edie was someone who really loved life and was always laughing. She was a wonderful comedienne."
Mrs. Williams' early roles were mostly in musicals, but she was later known for dramatic work, including "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?"
Her favorite character was the mother's role in "A View from the Bridge," and in musicals she always enjoyed "the best friend of the romantic lead," said a son, Eric Williams, of Richmond. "She was quite a character actress."
Her performances included radio and television commercials and some speaking roles in films made locally.
In addition to her acting career, Mrs. Williams retired from the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond before moving to Deltaville in 1985.
She was the widow of J. Paul Williams.
Survivors include three other sons, Glynn Williams, of St. Charles, Mo., Chris Williams, of Aylett, and Gerry Williams, of Stoneham, Mass.; a sister, Mary Emma Henderson, of Ocilla, Ga.; 15 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Thomas Johnson Jr., quartet singer, dies
Jul 25, 2003
From the moment Thomas Johnson Jr. opened his mouth to sing with the Harmonizing Four, "he was getting right to you with that soul in his voice," said former member and guitarist Sterling Holloman.
Mr. Johnson, a longtime tenor for the beloved Richmond-based gospel quartet, died Monday at age 90.
The Harmonizing Four was formed in 1927 by four friends at the former Dunbar School. While some published reports list him as replacing another member in the early 1930s, many of the group's biographies, including an entry in the All Music Guide, list Mr. Johnson as a founding member.
While the quartet's lineup changed throughout the years, Mr. Johnson, nicknamed "Goat" for his goatee, became the constant, performing with the group for more than 60 years until it disbanded.
Mr. Johnson's son, Thomas Ellis Johnson III, joined the group as a bass and sang with the group for 35 years until his death in 1993.
The quartet was renowned nationally for its arrangements with a guitar accompanying traditional hymns and spirituals. Mr. Johnson often switched harmony parts and lead vocals with tenor Lonnie Smith Sr., and was the lead on "How Great Thou Art," "God Will Take Care of You," "Rock of Ages" and others.
"His voice was sharp but mellow," Holloman said. "A lot of people called it sweet. He didn't have to pretend, he had an excellent natural tenor and a false tenor. When he sang in his false tenor, he could make the hair stand up on your head."
His granddaughter, Deborah Johnson, said Mr. Johnson was proud that the group maintained a traditional style and also of "the doors and avenues they opened for other gospel groups."
"There is only one way to sing 'Amazing Grace' or 'Nearer My God to Thee,'" Mr. Johnson said in a 1991 interview with The Times-Dispatch. "That's the traditional way. We don't put a black mark on contemporary [but] that is not our style. Ours is more sacred."
In their peak from the 1940s to the 1970s, the Harmonizing Four toured nationally and in Europe, cut albums for Decca, Vee-Jay, Atlanta International and other record companies, and had several national television appearances.
In the Richmond area, the four starred in a long-running weekly radio show on WRNL and in later years continued to perform in local churches and venues into the 1990s.
"We sang at the salute when Franklin D. Roosevelt died. We sang at the dedication of the Martin Luther King bridge," he told The Times-Dispatch. "We've faced stumbling blocks, segregation. You couldn't ride where you wanted or eat where you wanted to, but that was the way of the day. All we could do was pray that it would change, and it did change."
In the last few years of his life, Mr. Johnson volunteered to perform at the funerals of young local crime victims in the hopes of reaching out to other youth in trouble, his family said.
Mr. Johnson was a World War II Army veteran.
In addition to his granddaughter, Deborah, survivors include four other grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
