Celester Lee Slonaker
Mar 28, 2003
Celester Lee Slonaker often told his staff that a group of teachers working together could solve any problem.
"C.L.," as co-workers in Chesterfield County schools called him, knew that from experience.
He was principal of four county elementary schools and a former director of elementary education in Chesterfield.
"He was a great leader and it showed immediately," said Jack Winn, retired performing-arts specialist for Chesterfield schools. "No matter what level the staff member was on or what level the student was on, everyone was equally important to him."
Mr. Slonaker, who built a reputation as an icon both in the school system and in his Oregon Hill neighborhood, died of congestive heart failure at his home Tuesday.
Starting his career as a music teacher in 1965, he taught at Matoaca High School and held positions at several county elementary schools.
Named principal of Crestwood Elementary in 1975, he later became principal of Greenfield Elementary and in 1990 was the first principal of Woolridge Elementary. After five years in the central office, Mr. Slonaker opted to return to what he felt he did best and became principal of Robious Elementary in 1997.
"In a very short period of time, I was able to see what everyone else had seen for years," said Billy K. Cannaday Jr., the county's school superintendent.
"No child could find a better advocate and no co-worker could find a better supporter."
The third-generation resident of Oregon Hill was known for his trademark bow ties as well as his work as an organist and choirmaster at the neighborhood church, St. Andrew's Episcopal, where he started the popular Advent lessons and carols service, about 30 years ago.
Residents and St. Andrew's parishioners knew him by his childhood nickname, "Zellie."
Mr. Slonaker was hospitalized as the Advent service neared last year but was discharged just in time to lead the event.
"That was his baby and he was going to do it in on a stretcher if he had to," said his son, Allen Terrell Slonaker, of Richmond.
In the last days of his life, Mr. Slonaker was surrounded by visitors from the neighborhood, the church and the school system. One of them was the Rev. David May, rector of St. Andrew's.
"I sat down on the bed and said, 'Zellie, I really love you and one of the highest compliments I can give is you've really been my bud.' That sounds casual, I guess, but not between men. I truly loved Zellie as a friend."
Mr. Slonaker earned a bachelor's degree from the former Richmond Professional Institute and a master's from Virginia Commonwealth University.
In addition to his son, survivors include his wife, Carol Laws Slonaker; a daughter, Sarah Lindsey Harper; and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. Kent Slonaker, all of Richmond; a sister, Betty Anne Chalkey, of Chesterfield; two brothers, Troy K. Slonaker Jr., of Henrico, and Garland E. Slonaker, of Blackstone; and a granddaughter.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. Burial will follow in Hollywood Cemetery.
