Dr. Oscar Bruton Darden Jr.
Sep 11, 2002
Dr. Oscar Bruton Darden Jr. was an old-fashioned country doctor in Bedford who made house calls his entire career.
"His days were very, very long," said his daughter, Mary McGee of Richmond. "He took whatever time his patient needed, and that time might not have anything to do with the medical problem. People told him everything. Someone told me that Daddy had the greatest compassion of anyone he'd ever known."
Dr. Darden, a resident of Wintergreen and a director of Bedford Memorial Hospital, died in a Charlottesville hospital Sunday of a heart attack. He was 78.
Driving through Bedford on the way to an interview in another town, he was so charmed by the town and its scenery that he called his wife to tell her he had found the place to set up his practice. They moved there in 1955.
Dr. Darden had a solo internal-medicine practice for 25 years before joining Physicians Associates Ltd. in Bedford, where he retired in the late 1980s.
A Richmond native and son of a psychiatrist, he left Hampden-Sydney College to enlist in the Marine Corps during World War II. After serving in the South Pacific, including a stint as a radar operator on Okinawa, he graduated from Hampden-Sydney.
After graduating from the Medical College of Virginia, he did his internship in Winchester and an internal-medicine residency at McGuire Veterans Hospital, now McGuire Veterans Affairs Medical Center, in Richmond. During his more than 30-year career, he also served as staff physician at the Elks National Home in Bedford. He helped establish the cardiac unit at Bedford Memorial Hospital.
An elder and Sunday school teacher at Bedford Presbyterian Church, he was instrumental in establishing Bedford Christian Ministries, a community program to provide services such as a free clinic and food to the needy.
For about seven years, he served on the Bedford School Board. "My father was a voracious reader and a lifelong learner about everything," McGee said. "He was wonderful about imparting knowledge to us, especially the girls. He taught us how to change the sparkplugs and oil on the car so we wouldn't have to pay to have it done."
Dr. Darden loved to ski, fish, garden and make fine furniture by hand. He reveled in fixing anything that was broken. "He was a handyman beyond handyman. At Bedford Christian Ministries, he was putting up the walls on the building they renovated," his daughter said.
He drew great joy from taking driving short cuts that turned into long cuts.
"We'd be going to a historical site," McGee recalled, "and Daddy would look at the map and say, 'I think this is a short cut.' The whole car would groan. It never was a short cut and would take an hour longer to drive."
In addition to his daughter, survivors include his wife of 53 years, Ann Johnson Darden; a son, David Bruton Darden of Christiansburg; two other daughters, Dr. Nan Holland of Franklin, Tenn., and Carol Miller of Midland; and eight grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Tuesday at Rockfish Presbyterian Church in Nellysford.
Another memorial service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Bedford Presbyterian Church in Bedford.
