Mrs. Mary Rebecca May, age 77, of 6 South Vine Street, Richmond, Va., departed this life on Thursday, September 27, 2001 in Richmond. She is survived by three daughters, Cordelia Davis, Alfreda Terrell and Roxanne May; a son, Isham L. May III; and their father, Isham L. May Jr.; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; a brother, Porter Smith; two sisters, Sally H. Langley and Alean Richardson; two sons-in-law, one daughter-in-law, three sisters-in-law, three brothers-in-law, other relatives and friends. Her remains rest at Marian Gray Thomas Funeral Home of Cumberland. A viewing will be held Monday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., followed with family and friends fellowship from 6 to 7 p.m. at Joseph Jenkins Jr. Funeral Home, 2011 Grayland Ave., Richmond. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, 1 p.m. at Mt. Pero Baptist Church, Powhatan, Rev. Linwood Russell officiating, with interment in the church cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

NELLUM
Flora B. Nellum of 1125 E. 15th St., departed this life September 28, 2001. She leaves to cherish her memory a loving family friend, Frederick Hill; one niece, Norma Clark; and a host of other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Carlton T. Brooks Funeral Home, 2200 Hull St., where funeral services will be held Tuesday, 11 a.m., Dr. Lawrence B. Samuel officiating. Interment Maury Cemetery. Relatives and friends attending services, assemble at the funeral home Tuesday, 10:30 a.m.

ORR
Sidney Otis Orr, 83, of Ashland, died September 30, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Joyce S. Orr of Ashland; his son, Pat Orr of Glen Allen; daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and James Robinson; his granddaughter, Jamie Robinson, all of Powhatan; three sisters, Helen Wade of Aberdeen, Md., Peggy Morgan of Orlando, Fla., and Betty Kelly of Big Stone Gap, Va. Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Reid Funeral Home, 412 S. Washington Hwy., Ashland. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Woodland Cemetery, Ashland.

PITTS
Miss Mary Elizabeth Pitts, 92, of Sparta, died Sunday, September 30, 2001 at the home of her caregiver, Linda Martin in Bowling Green. Born at Sparta, she was a graduate of Mary Washington College and the University of Virginia. She retired after 43 years from the Caroline Co. School System as a teacher and librarian. She was a member of the Caroline Grays Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy and was the oldest continuous member of Salem Baptist Church at Sparta. Survivors include two nephews, Samuel Pitts III and Robin Pitts, both of Florida; five nieces, Mary P. Helms of Delaware, Jane P. MacAlister of Winchester, Anne P. Bonchu of Alexandria, Sara P. Johnson of Beaverdam, and Nancy P. Ikely of Oklahoma. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, October 3, 2001 at 2 p.m. in Salem Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green, Tuesday, 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Salem Baptist Church.

ROGERS
John Hamilton Rogers, passed over on September 28, 2001. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, October 2, 2001, 2 p.m. at the graveside in Blandford Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday, October 1, 2001 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home.

SHEPPERSON
Irene Archer Shepperson of 205 W. Roanoke St., Apt. 15B, departed this life September 30, 2001. Remains rest at the Carlton T. Brooks Funeral Home, 2200 Hull St. Funeral notice later. The family may be contacted at 706-6676.

SLEMAKER
Doris D. Slemaker died on September 30, 2001 peacefully and with dignity at home with her family. Mom was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, our father, and the love of her life, Retired Army Master Sergeant, Charles I. Slemaker Jr. Our mother was also preceded in death by her mother, Hazel Henshaw Sloope; and father, Frank E. Dunlavey. Mom was a devoted and loving mother to her surviving children, Charles I. Slemaker, Mark S. Slemaker, Bonnie S. Lemley and Phillip T. Slemaker. Mom was affectionately referred to as "MeMe" by her 11 grandchildren, Martin, Bradley, Holly, David, Michael, Sarah, Brian, Kate, Jennifer, Karen, Michael T.; and five great-grandchildren, Amanda, Chelsey, Jonathan, Austin, and Autumn. A private family service will be held in her honor. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to cancer research or Bon Secours Hospice.

STURDAVANT
Departed this life September 29, 2001, Miss Julia A. Sturdavant of Richmond. She is survived by two brothers, Bernard C. and James W. Sturdavant, both of Richmond; one devoted sister, Deloris S. Hill; a host of nieces, a host of nephews, among them two devoted, W. Weldon Hill and Jerry G. Scarborough; one aunt, Elizabeth Byrdsong; two sisters-in-law, Mary B. and Cynthia B. Sturdavant; a host of other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Walter J. Manning Funeral Home, 700 N. 25th St. Remains will lie in state Tuesday, 12 Noon at Good Shepherd Baptist Church, 28th and 'R' Sts., where funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Rev. Sylvester Smith officiating. Burial Maury Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Good Shepherd Baptist Church Building Fund, 1127 N. 28th St., Richmond, Va. 23223.

SUTTON
Mrs. Annie Mae Sutton of 501 Mansfield Dr., formerly of Enfield, N.C., died September 30, 2001. Remains rest at Scott-Lightfoot Funeral Home, 3021 "N" St. Funeral notice later.

TAYLOR
Ralph L. Taylor, 67, of Richmond, retired employee of Reynolds Metals, joined our Heavenly Father, September 28, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Jeanette (Jackie) Taylor; three daughters, Fran Walker and her husband, Richard of Newport News, Robin Taylor and her husband, Doug Prince of Richmond, and Rebecca Shipp and her husband, Jackie of Richmond; two sisters, two brothers; four grandsons, Kenneth, Troy, Adam and Steven; also five great-grandchildren. Mr. Taylor was a member of the American Legion Midlothian Post #186 and the Big H Hunt Club. The family will receive friends Sunday and Monday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Rd., where services will be held Tuesday, 11 a.m. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery.

WALTON
Mr. Robert N. Walton, 63, of Mechanicsville, went to be with the Lord Friday, September 28, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Ellenor H. Walton; two daughters, Michelle M. Puryear and her husband, Randy and Bonnie W. Ford; four grandchildren, Noah and Samuel Ford, and Matthew and Michael Puryear. Mr. Walton was retired from Whitehall-Robins and was a member of Staples Mill Road Baptist Church. The family will receive friends at the Mechanicsville Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd., on Monday, October 1, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, October 2, 2001 at Staples Mill Road Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association, 9211 Forest Hill Ave., Richmond, Va. 23235.

WATSON
Ben Watson of Chesterfield entered eternal rest September 26, 2001. Cherishing his memory are his three sisters, four brothers, a host of nieces and nephews, two devoted, Clephos and Janet Sessions; cousins, other relatives and friends. WEBB
Kathleen S. "Kay" Webb, 67, of Powhatan, died September 30, 2001. She is survived by her husband, Percy S. Webb Jr.; one son, Dean G. Webb; one daughter, Darlene W. Martin, both of Powhatan; one brother, Jack P. Sullivan of Rockville; six grandchildren, Neal, Tyler, Eric, Patrick and Karen. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Hwy. (Rt. 60), Powhatan. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, 2 p.m. in the Red Lane Baptist Church, Powhatan. Interment Powhatan Community Cemetery.

ADKINS
Mendel Carlisle Adkins, 78, formerly of Louisville, Ky., passed away January 18, 2002. He served in the South Pacific with the U.S. Navy during WWII and was retired from Reynolds Metals Company. He is survived by his wife, Beatrice M. Adkins; a brother and sister-in-law, Pastors Jim and Donna Adkins of Greensburg, Pa.; a brother-in-law, Kenneth L. Chaudoin of Louisville, Ky.; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved schnauzer, "Jazz". He was preceded in death by his sister, Libby Chaudoin. Funeral arrangements will be private with naval burial at sea. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Richmond SPCA, River Road Church, Baptist Building Fund, Crippled Children's Hospital or Hospice of Central Virginia.

ATKINS
Frances H. Atkins of 2400 Burton St., departed this life on January 17, 2002. She is survived by her daughter, Rosemary Crawford; son, William A. Atkins Jr. (Pauline); two grandsons, Randy Crawford and Brandon M. Atkins; other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Chiles Funeral Home, 2100 Fairmount Ave. Funeral services will be conducted on Monday 12 Noon from Cedar Street Baptist, 2301 Cedar St., with Dr. Benjamin W. Robertson Sr. officiating. Interment Oakwood Cemetery.

BUCKINGHAM
Eleanor C. "Ms. Buck" Buckingham died Monday, January 14, 2002, just one month before her 90th birthday. She was the daughter of the late Weldon W. and Emma Capps of Manson, N.C. and widow of R.M. "Buck" Buckingham of Richmond. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Steve Buckingham and Cynthia "Andy" Landis of Nashville, Tenn. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lakeside Volunteer Rescue Squad, 2007 Timberlake Ave., Richmond, Va. 23228.

BUNCH
Mary Sweeney Bunch died on January 6, 2002 at Retreat Hospital in Richmond, Va. The widow of Major John B. Bunch, Mrs. Bunch resided at The Hermitage (Richmond). She taught briefly at mountain schools in Kentucky before joining federal service, where she served more than 37 years. On retiring she was for 20 years an active volunteer for the American Red Cross in Front Royal, Va. and Richmond. Burial services were held January 10, 2002 at Quantico National Cemetery, Quantico, Va. Mrs. Bunch is survived by sisters, Susan S. Schultz of Alexandria, Va. and Margaret S. Foley of Lexington, Ky.; and a brother, William E. Sweeney of Longview, Texas.

BYRD
Dr. Charles William Byrd, 83, of Richmond, Va., died January 18, 2002. He was born in Locust Grove, Ga., graduated from the University of Georgia in 1939, and was a 1943 graduate of the Medical College of Virginia. He served as a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corp. in Europe during World War II and was the recipient of a Purple Heart, Bronze Star with First Oak Leaf Cluster, Distinguished Unit Badge and Meritorious Service Unit Plaque. Upon his discharge from the Army, Dr. Byrd completed his residency in General Surgery at the McGuire Veterans Administration Hospital in Richmond. He served as acting chief of surgery at McGuire Veterans Administration Hospital prior to entering private practice in 1961. In addition to his private practice, Dr. Byrd served as chief medical officer of the Richmond, Fredericksburg, and Potomac Railroad Company. He was a member and trustee of Westover Hills United Methodist Church, a member of Willow Oaks Country Club, and a former board member and former president of the medical staff of the Retreat Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Rose Lee Donati Byrd; three daughters, Claudia Byrd Macdonald of Richmond, Va., Dr. Rebecca Byrd Kearns of Norfolk, Va., and Jane Byrd Cooke of Richmond, Va.; and one son, Charles W. Byrd Jr. of Richmond, Va. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, Jonathan Byrd Macdonald, Rebecca Norwood Macdonald, Benjamin Lee Macdonald, Charles William Byrd III, Sarah Catherine Byrd, James Alexander Byrd, Kate Alexander Kearns, William Albert Kearns, Patrick Byrd Kearns, Caroline Ann Cooke, Jack Edward Cooke, and Mark Andrew Cooke. He was preceded in death by a brother, Henry Lee Byrd of Pittsburgh, Pa., and is survived by a sister, Ruth Byrd Cobb of Americus, Ga. A private family burial service will take place in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond and a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 22, 2002 at Westover Hills United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Westover Hills United Methodist Church.

COLLINS
Mrs. Jessie Simmons Collins of Richmond departed this life Friday, January 18, 2002. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Sts. Funeral notice later. Family may be contacted at 231-5851.
