William Joseph LoPorto
Nov 25, 2002
After years as a successful lawyer amid the hum and bustle of Northern Virginia, William Joseph LoPorto took easily to the bayside serenity he found in the Northern Neck.
"We bought property down here in the 1970s, and we'd come down just on weekends," said Mr. LoPorto's wife, Nancy Stuart LoPorto.
"Then he opened a little office just on Saturdays in the afternoon, and he'd get . . . the people that the regular lawyers down here wouldn't see."
But Mr. LoPorto loved it. The clients in a rural community of watermen and farmers had a draw that couldn't be matched by his higher-paying patrons inside the Capital Beltway.
By the early 1980s, the couple had taken up permanent residence in Callao.
"He just loved helping people. He said [being an attorney] wasn't a business, he was just there to help people," Mrs. LoPorto said. "He'd give clients his home number and tell them to feel free to call - and they did."
By the mid-1980s, Northumberland residents liked what they knew of Mr. LoPorto enough to elect him commonwealth's attorney, a position he held for nearly a decade.
Mr. LoPorto, who served as commonwealth's attorney for Northumberland until 1996, died Saturday. A World War II Navy veteran, he was 76.
"I think he was across the board a very fair and decent person," said retired 15th Circuit Judge Joe Spruill, before whom Mr. LoPorto argued many times.
"He was persistent and dogged in his approach," Spruill said, at the same time recalling a compassion unusual among prosecutors.
In addition to his wife, Mr. LoPorto is survived by 10 children, Anna Maria Green, of Culpeper; Shauna Severo, of Oakton; Michael Severo, of Ventura, Calif.; Christina Culbertson, of Fredericksburg; Patrick Severo, of Manhattan Beach, Calif.; Bernadette Thomasson, of Culpeper; Michele Ketchum, of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; Terese Vigotti, of Florida; John Severo of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; and Joseph LoPorto of Fredericksburg.
He is also survived by a sister, Alice Fili, of Claverack, N.Y., and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Currie Funeral Home in Kilmarnock on Monday at 5 p.m., and a requiem Mass will be said Tuesday at 3 p.m. at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Kilmarnock.
