Howard M. Brightly Sr. of Chester passed after a period of illness on Tuesday, July 17, 2001. Left to mourn is his loving family. A private memorial service will be held at the Virginia Veterans Cemetery, Amelia Co. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the National Kidney Association. BYERS
John Gordon Byers Sr., age 87, of Kilmarnock, Va., passed away Tuesday, July 17, 2001. Mr. Byers was born in Lonacoming, Maryland on August 10, 1913. He graduated from the University of Maryland in 1936 and began a career in government service which lasted for more than 35 years. He retired in 1971 from his position with the U.S. State Department in Washington, D.C. and moved to Kilmarnock, Va., where he resided until his death. He was married to Mary Dow Byers, who died in 1983. He subsequently married Virginia Davis Byers of Kilmarnock, Va., who survives him; along with his son, John G. Byers Jr. of Bristol, Tenn.; his daughter, Barbara Van Tine of McLean, Va.; his three stepdaughters, Ann Davis Gill, Sherry Davis Ketner and Elizabeth Davis McBride; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, July 21, 2001 in Kilmarnock United Methodist Church, Kilmarnock, Va., with interment in Historic Christ Church Burying Ground, Irvington, Va. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service on Saturday. He will be greatly missed.

Barbara Benefield Church departed this life Tuesday, July 17, 2001. Originally from Atlanta, Ga., she was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Kathryn Benefield. She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband of 58 years, Colonel (U.S. Army Retired) Charlie R. Church; two daughters, Carol Holt and husband, Bill and Maynee Cayton and husband, Lauren; three grandchildren, Josh Holt, Molly Cayton and Griffin Cayton; two sisters, Kathryn Bartlett of Santa Monica, Calif. and Betty Goldthwait of St. Augustine, Fla.; and many loving friends and neighbors. She was well known for her knowledge and love of antiques. An antique dealer, she was the proud owner of the popular vintage clothing store Bygones located on W. Cary St., Richmond, Va. She was a member of Merchants Hope Episcopal Church and the Merchants Hope Garden Club. She was also a member of both the Fort Lee Officers' Wives Club and the Hopewell Woman's Club. She was a dedicated volunteer and a former manager of the Fort Lee Thrift Shop. A memorial service will be held 1:30 p.m. Friday, July 20, 2001 at the Hopewell Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Humane Society of Hopewell, 312 E. Poythress St., Hopewell, Va.

Patricia Tillman Clay, daughter of the late, Thomas and Addie Tillman, died July 16, 2001 at Tandem Health Care, Williamsburg. She was 65. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother and will be remembered for her warm smile and wonderful cooking. Survivors include husband of 44 years, Edwin S. Clay Sr.; two daughters, Jean Clay Rilee and husband, David, Deborah Clay Coble and husband, James Devin; one son, Edwin Clay Jr., and wife, Ello; eight grandchildren. A service of remembrance, conducted by the Reverend Dennis Hollandsworth, will be held Friday, 2 p.m. at the Chapel of Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point. Interment will be private. Mrs. Martha Jane Hart Green, 92, widow of Harry George Green, died July 14, 2001. She was a native of Great Falls, Mont. and a graduate of the University of Washington. She worked for the Chicago Tribune before marriage and volunteered in many capacities throughout her life. She lived in Richmond for the last 11 years, prior to that she was a resident of Lynchburg with her husband, where they were active members of Court Street Methodist Church for 50 years. William S. (Bill) Hall, Jr., 61, of Midlothian passed away July 17, 2001. He is survived by his wife Kathryn L. Hall; father, William S. Hall, Sr.; sons, Barry Hall, and Brian Hall and his wife, Tara; sister, Bobbie Bultje; granddaughter, Madison Hall. Bill was an avid baseball fan. He was loved by all he knew and met and will be greatly missed. Alice Yeadon Haupl of Petersburg died Wednesday, July 18, 2001. Originally of Yorkshire, England, she was the youngest daughter of William Henry and Minnie Mawson Yeadon. She served in the Royal British Air Force during WWII, where she met her future husband, LTC (ret) John Haupl. They were happily married for 54 years. She is also survived by five grandchildren, George, Allison, Jonathan, Phillip and Christopher; and two great-grandchildren, Addison and Jacob. Charlotte C. Loscomb, of Richmond passed away Monday, July 16, 2001. She was the wife of the late Ronald C. Loscomb and the daughter of the late Walter and Margaret Clarke, formerly of Sandston. She is survived by two daughters, Kimberley L. Vickers and Wendy L. Updegraff; one son, Timothy S. Loscomb (Hooper). "Boss" is also survived by two grandsons, C. Ashton Ayers and Jeremy S. Vickers; one sister, Jean C. Roberts; two nephews, Jeffrey S. Roberts and A. Scott Roberts. She is also survived by many devoted friends including Courtney Berger and Michelle Ledford and her companion, "CoCo". Mrs. Loscomb was a member of Sandston Baptist Church and a former employee of the State of Virginia, Department of Social Services, Division of Child Support Enforcement.
