ATKINS
Francis Robert "Slick" Atkins, age 63, died Wednesday, May 2, 2001 at his residence near Shappard, Va. He is survived by four sons, Dennis Atkins of Afton, Keith Atkins of Richmond, Francis Robert Atkins Jr. of Shappard and Gerald Atkins of Cumberland; one daughter, Debra Francis of Meherrin; and one sister, Christine Leatherwood of Farmville; 15 grandchildren, two great-grandchilden. Memorials may be made to Southside SPCA at Meherrin. The family will receive friends Friday (tonight) from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Shorter Funeral Home, Farmville. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at the funeral chapel of the Shorter Funeral Home with interment in Trinity Memorial Gardens near Rice.

BANKS
Louise Jennings Banks of Richmond, formerly of Ashland, died May 2, 2001. She was the widow of Allison H. Banks. She is survived by her daughters, Christine Heath Lowery and Paula Banks Nuckols; sister, Pauline Jennings Maxey; grandchildren, Deborah Barker, Cindy Carey, Arthur Lowery, Creed M. Nuckols III and Bryan Nuckols; great-grandchildren, Jason Barker, Colin and Hayley Lowery; numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Banks was president of the "Naomi Class" for 20 years at Bethlehem Baptist Church and during her earlier years was active at Slash Christian Church. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Road, where the family will receive friends Thursday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., and where services will be held 11 a.m. Friday. Interment Cool Spring Baptist Church Cemetery.

BARCALOW
Kathryn "Kitty" Beale Barcalow, 72, died at her residence in Virginia Beach on May 2, 2001. She was the widow of Percy Earl Barcalow Jr. and the daughter of the late Walter L. and Bessie Powell Beale of Norfolk and Richmond, Va. She is survived by one daughter, Kathy Lee Barcalow of Richmond, Va.; one son, Whitley Beale Barcalow of Virginia Beach; a sister-in-law, Alice Barcalow and her husband, Vernon G. Eberwine Jr. of Bennette Creek, Suffolk, Va. She graduated from Longwood College in 1950. She was a member of the Cavalier Garden Club, Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital Auxiliary, and Longwood Alumni, and a member of the Virginia Beach United Methodist Church. A funeral service will be conducted Saturday, May 5, 2001, at 11 a.m. in the Maestas Funeral Home, Baltic Avenue Chapel, by the Rev. Philip M. Waltz. Burial will be in Princess Anne Park, Virginia Beach. The family will receive friends Friday, May 4, 2001, at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your favorite charity.

BERGOINE
Myrtle O. Bergoine, 93, of Charles City, Va., died Thursday, May 3, 2001. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Willis Bergoine. Mrs. Bergoine is survived by her son, Willis Bergoine and his wife, Dorothy; one brother, Elmo Orange; three grandchildren, Bryan Bergoine and his wife, Tracey, Stuart Bergoine and his wife, Cathy, and Bradley Bergoine and his wife, Jill; three great-grandchildren, Andrew Bergoine, Chelsea Bergoine and Farrah Moore. She retired from Ohio Bell after 42 years and has devoted her life to Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church since that time. She was active in the church with the WMU and the Kings Daughters. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, May 5, at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg, Va. A graveside service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, May 6, at Washington Memorial Park in Sandston. Memorial donations may be made to Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, 19300 The Glebe Lane, Charles City, Va.; or Providence Forge Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 177, Providence Forge, Va. 23140.

BOSHER
Departed this life May 1, 2001, Mrs. Clara B. Bosher, formerly of 1122 N. 24th St. She leaves to remember her three sons, James and Wallace Ward and Eddie Bosher; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Maggie Williams and Rebecca Dandridge; one brother, Ellis Hewlett; a host of nieces and nephews; one sister-in-law, Christobel Rogers; other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Walter J. Manning Funeral Home, 700 N. 25th St., where funeral services will be held Saturday 11 a.m., Rev. Stanley Ward Jr. officiating. Burial Oakwood Cemetery.

Clarence E. Christian of Richmond, Virginia died May 3, 2001. Remains rest at Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Blvd. Funeral notice later.

DONKLE
Glenn Franklin Donkle, 66, of Sandston, died Thursday, May 3, 2001. He is survived by three children, Robin Donkle, Frank and wife, Marcie Donkle, Laura Donkle Hall and husband, Larry Hall; his mother, Gleedith Jarrett; three grandchildren. Remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, followed by a funeral service. Interment Washington Memorial Park.

GODSEY
Dehra Vaughan Godsey, wife of Joseph Cornelius Godsey for sixty-two years, died Wednesday, May 2, 2001. Besides her husband she is survived by her children, Mary Douglas Godsey, Joseph Cornelius Godsey Jr., his wife, Martha Young Godsey, Christie Godsey Owens, her husband, Ronald Keith Owens, and Sally Adell Godsey. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Joseph Cornelius Godsey III, John Chapman Godsey, his wife, Margaret Murrey Godsey, Jennifer Owens Blair, her husband, Lee Marshall Blair; a great-grandson, Jacob Holden Owens; and a special friend, John S. Thomasson. A private service has been held. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Forest Hill Presbyterian Church, VCU's Massey Cancer Center or, in kind, to the Virginia Blood Service.

GREENE
Departed this life May 2, 2001 in a Tappahannock Healthcare Center, Joseph Pollard Greene of Walkerton, Va. He is survived by a devoted cousin, Christine Jones of Walkerton; one aunt, Bessie White of St. Stephens Church. Remains will lie in state, May 5 from 12 noon until 6 p.m. at Washington Funeral Home, Tappahannock and one hour before the service Sunday at the church. Funeral services will be held May 6 at 2 p.m. at Bethlehem Baptist Church, Barington, Va. Rev. James Hill, Pastor. Interment in the church cemetery.

HALL
William (Marshall) Hall, 71, of Richmond, passed away May 3, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Betty Jane Hall; his sons, William Douglas Hall, Richard Marshall Hall and Joseph Charles Hall; his daughters, Debra Lea Finlayson and Carolyn Hall Potter; his brothers, Bobby and Gene Hall; his sister, Gladys Campbell; 11 grandchildren. He was retired from the city of Richmond and was a builder of late model stock cars which took Roy Hendrick in 1983 to win three track championships. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Army. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, and where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday. Interment Mt. Hermon Baptist Church Cemetery.

HART
Elizabeth A. Hart, 64, of Powhatan, died May 2, 2001. She is survived by one son and his wife, Terry P. and Debbie Hart of Powhatan; one daughter and her husband, Judy and Walter Ward of Chester; her mother, Thelma G. Carswell; two brothers, James L. Carswell and Major Wayne Carswell, all of Tennessee; and five grandsons. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Hwy. (Rt. 60), Powhatan. Graveside services will be held 3 p.m. Saturday in the Powhatan Community Cemetery.

HOWELL
George Willis Howell, 90, died Thursday, May 3, 2001 in Richmond. He was the husband of the late Bessie Lee Farries Howell. Mr. Howell was born March 24, 1911 in Bedford County, a son of the late Odaster Pleasants Howell and the late Lettie May Shields Howell. He was a member of Rivermont Avenue Baptist Church and retired after 47 years of service as a Corporate Vice President with The Mead Paper Board Products Sales Corporation, Dayton, Ohio. Following his retirement, he served as a consultant to the paper manufacturing industry traveling all over the world. Mr. Howell was active in civic affairs in Lynchburg for many years. He is survived by two daughters, Glora H. Thornhill of Lynchburg, Elana H. Gelletly of Richmond; a sister, Myrtle Pierce of Virginia Beach; a son-in-law, Bobby C. Buchanan of Roxboro, N.C.; a brother-in-law, Arthur P. Farries; a sister-in-law, Ardell F. West both of Lynch Station, ten grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Mauralia H. Buchanan; two grandchildren, Jennifer Lee Haas and George Daniel Thornhill. A graveside funeral service will be conducted 11:30 a.m., Saturday, May 5, 2001 in Fort Hill Memorial Park with Reverend James E. Baucom and the Reverend Bobby C. Buchanan officiating. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home and other times at the home of Mrs. Thornhill, 2215 Mimosa Drive. Memorial contributions may be made to Rivermont Avenue Baptist Church, 1301 Rivermont Ave., Lynchburg, Va. 24503 or Patrick Henry Boys Plantation, P.O. Box 1398, Brookneal, Va. 24528-1303. JACKSON
Daisy Mae Jackson of Lawrenceville, Va., departed this life on Tuesday, May 1, 2001. She is survived by three daughters, Mona J. Minor, Kimberly A. Jackson, and Helen E. Jackson, and was preceded in death by one daughter, Jackie D. Jackson. Other surviving relatives include sisters, Rosa P. Goodrich and Vivian J. Taylor; one brother, George W. Jones Jr.; one son-in-law, Eugene W. Minor; nine grandchildren, Maurice, Michael, Cina, Rodney, Laura, Damien, Danielle, Jordan and Justin; and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives. Remains rest at Brown's Funeral Service, 704 N. Main St., Lawrenceville, Va. Funeral services will be conducted at Brown's Memorial Chapel on Sunday, May 6, 2001, at 2 p.m. Interment to be held at the Jones family cemetery.

JOHNSON
Joseph Lee (Joe) Johnson of 9901 Jean Dr. departed this life Tuesday, May 1, 2001. Preceeded in death by one son, Raymond Johnson. He is survived by his wife, Isabel Johnson; three daughters, Queen Jackson (Richard), Viola Horace (Harriel) and Camelia Johnson (Ronald); four grandchildren, Gwendolyn Haskins (Anthony) Angela Allen (Phillip), Crystal Robinson (Shawn) and Cynthia Jackson; three great-grandchildren, Shaina, Kiara and Victoria; three sisters, Helena Rudd, Jane Mosby and Gertrude Johnson; two brothers, Alfred and James Johnson; five sisters-in-law, one brother-in law, a host of nieces, nephews and cousins, other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Streets, where funeral services will be held Saturday, May 5, 1 p.m. Rev. Anthony Rudd officiating. Interment in Dale Memorial Park, Chesterfield County. Relatives and friends attending funeral services assemble at the funeral home, Saturday, 1:30 p.m.

LASSITER
Lillian Piercy Williams Lassiter, born on August 23, 1912, in Weldon, N.C., of the late Ernest Linwood Williams, also of Weldon, N.C., and Margaret Shaw Williams of Halifax, N.C., passed away on May 2, 2001, at her son's residence in Midlothian, Va. Mrs. Lassiter was married to the late Albert Lassiter Jr. of Rich Square, N.C. Mrs. Lassiter attended Madison Teachers College in Harrisonburg, Va., in the early 1950s Mrs. Lassiter move to West Hyattsville, Md., and became an active member of the Ager Road United Methodist Church. Mrs. Lassiter had a lengthy career first by working for several Washington, D.C., area doctors before moving on to a United States Government career. Mrs. Lassister began working for the U.S. Civil Service Commission, The U.S. Marshal's Office and finally retiring from the U.S. Attorney's Office at the U.S. Courthouse in Washington, D.C., after 26 years of government service. Mrs. Lassiter was well-known and respected with her position as the secretary to Earl Silbert, The United States Attorney, during the prosecutions of the Watergate Era. In 1993, Mrs. Lassiter moved to Midlothian, Va., to live with her son. She attended St. Marks United Methodist Church and played bridge with a number of the members. Mrs. Lassiter is survived by two daughters, Margaret L. Bailey and her husband, John L. Bailey from Paducah, Ky., Jane L. Serbousek and her husband, Michael G. Serbousek from Reston, Va.; and her son, Albert Linwood "Lin" Lassiter. Mrs. Lassiter is also survived by her grandchildren, Grant Michael Serbousek, Leigh Anna Serbousek, both of Reston, Va., Susan B. Buckman of Fancy Farm, Ky., and Pattie Lynn Flecther of Kevil, Ky.; great-grandchildren, Joshua and Adam Buckman, John William Lawson and Maci Katheryn Fletcher. Funeral arrangements have been made with the Branch Funeral Home, 839 Jackson Street, Roanoke Rapids, N.C. 27870. Family and friends may attend funeral services on Sunday, May 6, 2001, at 1:30 p.m. followed by a service to be buried in the Williams Family plot at the Pineview Cemetery, Rocky Mount, N.C.

LEMONS
On May 2, 2001, Herbert B. Lemons, age 58, left on the 7:30 a.m. train bound for heaven. He was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Lanexa, Va. In addition to his devoted sister and caregiver, Frances Duncan, he is survived by sisters, Romayn Wright and Harriet Lemons; four brothers, John F., Curtis O., Joseph A. and Lawrence Lemons; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at Ebenezer Baptist Church, Saturday, May 5, at 2 p.m. Arrangements by Whiting's Funeral Home, Williamsburg, Va. Sister Dear, if only you knew how much your care and love meant to me.

MACKLIN
