CLEMONS
Marion Wallace Clemons, 83, of Richmond, died Sunday, January 13, 2002. She is survived by her husband, L. Henry Clemons Sr.; two children, Dr. L. Henry Clemons Jr. and Faye Clemons Valentino; a grandson, Michael A. Valentino; two granddaughters, Stephanie Hamman and Daphney Thomas; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Iris Russell; and a brother, Samuel Wallace. Funeral services will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 15, at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd. Interment Westhampton Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Thomas Hospice Palliative Care Unit at the Medical College of Virginia.

COLES
Mrs. Addie Mangum Coles, formerly of 2908 Barton Ave., departed this life January 13, 2002. Mrs. Coles was predeceased by her husband, Deacon Leon Coles; and her son, Reginald W. Coles. She is survived by her grandchildren and their spouses, Ronald L. and Aileen Coles, with whom she lived and were very devoted to her, Reginald W. Coles Jr. (Daisy), Gwendolyn A.C. Coles, Mary Lou C. Brent, Regina C. Woolard (Maceo) of Las Vegas, Nev., Helen C. Gardner (George) and Sandra L. Coles, 13 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, cousins and her church family. Her remains rest at the W.S. Watkins & Son Funeral Home, 2700 North Ave. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 16, at Great Hope Baptist Church, 2101 Venable St., Rev. Earl Bledsoe, pastor, officiating. Interment Oakwood Cemetery. Her remains will rest in church at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Great Hope Baptist Church Building Fund.

COON
Retired U.S. Air Force Colonel Richard Duane Coon, 72, died on Sunday, January 13, 2002. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Mary; three sons and their wives, John Scott and his wife, Anne of Charlotte, N.C., Richard Warren and his wife, Kathy of Richmond, David Charles and his wife, Allene of Richmond; four grandsons, Jonathan, Phillip, David and Daniel; and one granddaughter, Julia. He served 27 years in the United States Air Force, where he retired from active duty as a regular Colonel. Colonel Coon was a native of Cass County, Iowa and a graduate of the University of Colorado. Upon return from overseas he was selected during an Air Force-wide national search for junior military officers to perform the role of upperclassmen as Air Training Officers for the initial class of cadets entering the new United States Air Force Academy under construction near Colorado Springs, Colo. He taught military training, physical training and navigational flying training. This class would become the graduating class of 1959 and the very first ever to graduate from the USAF Academy. Upon completing his tour of duty at the USAF academy, he was assigned to Strategic Air Command for extensive crew training for B-47 aircraft. He served 12 years in SAC. Colonel Coon achieved the aeronautical rating of Master Navigator. He served in both Korea and Vietnam during hostilities. During his 27 years of service, Colonel Coon was awarded the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Force Commendation with Oak Leaf Clusters, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the President of the Republic of Korea Presidential Letter of Appreciation, and the United States Presidential Unit Citation. These awards were in addition to his foreign and national campaign ribbons awarded during his years of military service to his country. A memorial visitation will be held 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. on Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church, 4602 Cary Street Road. Interment will be in the United States Air Force Academy cemetery with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society (Restrict to prostate cancer research programs), P.O. Box 6359, Glen Allen, Va. 23059.

CURTIS
Elizabeth "Betty" Ballard Jones Curtis went to be with her Lord Jesus Christ on Sunday, January 13, 2002. She was born December 18, 1921 in Danville, Va. and was the daughter of Dr. Nelson Clyde Jones and Nannie Moorman Jones. Mrs. Curtis was a long-time resident of Petersburg and an active member of Christ & Grace Episcopal Church for 50 years. Her life was devoted to her Lord and to her family. She was predeceased by her husband of 44 years, Walter Robert Scott Curtis; and is survived by their five children, Elizabeth Curtis Horne of Colonial Heights, Va., Dr. W.R. Scott Curtis Jr. of Hampton, Va., Nelson C.J. Curtis of Niskayuna, N.Y., Sarah Curtis Wimberley of Woodbridge, Va. and Nancy Curtis Helring of Petersburg. Mrs. Curtis is also survived by 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends at the residence on Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. A service celebrating her life and her legacy of love will be held at Christ & Grace Episcopal Church, 1545 S. Sycamore St., Petersburg at 11 a.m. Thursday. In lieu of flowers the family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Christ & Grace Episcopal Church.

FALLEN
Mr. Floyd Carlton "Goo" Fallen, 64, of South Boston died January 14, 2002 at Henrico Doctors Hospital. He was the son of the late Floyd and Mary Covington Fallen, and was married to Dolly Fisher Fallen. Mr. Fallen was owner/operator of Fallen Trucking, Inc. and owner of Fallen Racing Car #2. He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Teresa Fallen and husband, Clay Whitehead, of Richmond and Dawn Pederson and husband, Duane of South Boston; a son, Roy Mitchell and wife, Marsha of Wichita, Kan.; two sisters, Florine Bomar and Geraldine Overstreet, both of Clover; two brothers, Ralph Fallen of Nathalie and Jackie Fallen of Halifax; five grandchildren, Austin and Brooke Thaxton, both of South Boston and Garrett, Alec and Allysa Mitchell, all of Wichita, Kan. The family will receive friends at Brooks Funeral Home Wednesday night from 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Berry Hill Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

GALLAGHER
Louise Katherine Beauchamp Gallagher died on January 12, 2002 at the age of 87. Mrs. Gallagher was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Harold Milton Gallagher. She is survived by a daughter, Sarah Louise Gallagher Becker of Warsaw; two grandsons, A. Harold "Hank" Becker III of Sharps and Robert Cook Beauchamp Becker of Warsaw; two sisters, Velma B. Sisson of Montross and Ruby B. Beach of Silver Spring, Md.; a sister-in-law, Helen S. Beauchamp; and many nieces and nephews. She was an active member of Warsaw Baptist Church and a faithful servant to the congregation. She will long be remembered as a kind and generous lady who freely gave of herself and her talents to those she met on her life's journey. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 15 at 11 a.m. at Warsaw Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Richmond County Emergency Relief Fund, P.O. Box 291, Warsaw, Va. 22572.

GARY
Ormond Mildred Marshall Gary, 93, of Lunenburg, Va., widow of Hayden Ellsworth Gary, died Monday, January 14, 2002. She was daughter of the late Edward Witt and Annie Mildred Hawkins Marshall. Mrs. Gary was a graduate of Victoria High School and State Teachers College (now Longwood College). She taught in Nottoway County Public Schools. She was a member of Reedy Chapel Christian Church for 65 years and now a member of Mount Olivet Christian Church. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Anne Gary and James Edward Gaulding of Lunenburg; two granddaughters and grandsons-in-law, Tammy Marshall Gaulding and Thomas Boyd Dickens of Rocky Mount, N.C., Cynthia "Cindy" Gary Gaulding and John Mark Everett of Danville; great-granddaughter and great-grandson, Lucy Anne Everett and Hayden Mark Everett of Danville; stepgreat-grandcildren, Thomas Christopher Dickens and Kimberly Ruth Dickens of Rocky Mount, N.C.; a sister, Ruth Marshall Wilkes of Urbanna. The family will receive friends Tuesday (today) 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Staples Funeral Home, Victoria, Va., where funeral services will be conducted Wednesday 2 p.m. with interment at Lakeview Cemetery in Victoria. Memorial contributions may be made to Mount Olivet Christian Church or the Victoria Fire and Rescue Squad.

GROSS
Al Gross, 92, longtime Richmond resident and dedicated retailer in downtown Richmond, passed away on January 12, 2002. Mr. Gross was co-founder of Peoples' Furniture Store previously located at the current site of the Marriott Hotel in Richmond. He was committed to the development of downtown Richmond, the Richmond Forum, the American Cancer Society, and served as Sergeant of Arms of the House of Delegates of the Virginia Legislature for roughly five years, and other related community and business associations. He is survived by two children, Paul Allan Gross and his wife, Gail of Crystal River, Fla. and Joan Wiley and her husband, Roger of Roswell, Ga.; brother, Jerome Gross of Washington, D.C.; sister, Ann Manger of Richmond; five grandchildren, Cynthia Wiley, Clarke Wiley, both of Roswell, Ga., Lorri Creswell of Milford, Ohio, Garry Gross of West Chester, Pa. and Randy Gross of Kissimmee, Fla.; and four great-grandchildren. Services will be held Tuesday, January 15, at 11 a.m. at the Joseph W. Bliley Funeral Home, 3801 Augusta Ave. The family suggests contributions of remembrance be made to either the Preschool Children's Fund of the Richmond Jewish Community Center or to the St. Peters Parrish Church, c/o Rector Rev. Bryan McGurk, 8400 St. Peters Lane, New Kent, Va. 23124 in honor of Mr. Gross's treasured friends, Jeff and Helen Smith.

GRUBBS
George Martin Grubbs, 88, of Richmond, passed away January 13, 2002. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Myrtle A. Grubbs. He is survived by his wife, Judith B. Grubbs; two daughters, Kaye Edwards and Faye Robertson; three sons, Bob Grubbs, Ken Grubbs and Steve Grubbs; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Remains rest at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave., where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 16, 2002 at Westhampton Memorial Park.

HARGIS
Harry Whitfield "Whit" Hargis, 37, of Tappahannock, died Saturday, January 12, 2002. He was born in Roanoke and was a mechanical engineer with Southtech, Inc. He is survived by his wife, Shawn Hargis; a daughter, Raye Ann Hargis; and a son, Vaughn Whitfield Hargis, all of Tappahannock; his father, Harry Burns Hargis; and mother, D. Hookie Hargis, both of Colonial Heights; two brothers, William Hargis of Winchester and Charles Hargis of Kitty Hawk, N.C.; two cousins, David Rickard of Chester and Susan Rickard of Denver, Col.; and his mother-in-law, Lois Scarber of Darrington, Wash.; a brother-in-law, Rob Scarber; and a sister-in-law, Kathy Cruse, both of Kirkland, W.Va. The funeral procession will leave Wednesday at 12 noon from the E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights, for a graveside service to be held at 12:30 p.m. in Southlawn Memorial Park, Prince George County. The Rev. Tigh Newell will officiate. The family will receive friends Tuesday 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Hargis Children's Fund, Essex Bank, Prince Street, Tappahannock, Va. 22560.

HARVER
Joseph Wilbur Harver Sr. of Richmond died January 14, 2002. A son, Ricky S. Harver, preceded him in death. He is survived by two sons, Joseph W. Jr. of Amelia, Va. and William Ed of Parksburg, Pa.; one daughter, Charlotte Royall of Quinton, Va.; three brothers, William A. of Blackstone, Va., Curtis L. of Richmond, Va. and Norman F. of Amelia, Va.; two sisters, Laverne King of Richmond, Va. and Margaret Webb of Amelia, Va. Mr. Harver was a member of the Westhampton Masonic Lodge No. 302 AF&AM, the Richmond Scottish Rite Bodies, the Grottos and the Acca Temple Shrine, and was a veteran of WWII. His remains rest at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd., where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., and where a Masonic Service will be held at 7 p.m. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Amelia Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Amelia, Va. Memorial contributions may be made to Children's Hospital.

HAUSER
Virginia Chumbley Hauser of Richmond died January 12, 2002. She was a retired deputy clerk in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Richmond. She is survived by her husband, Arthur Lee Hauser; two sisters, Dorrence Brown of Bassett, Va. and Helen Goans of Christiansburg, Va. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, and where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday. Interment Westhampton Memorial Park.

Ella E. "Mickey" "Mema" Jones, 90, died Sunday, January 13, 2002. She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow W. Jones; her son, William Thomas Jones; and a sister, Virginia L. Grubb. She is survived by her son, Robert W. Jones of Mechanicsville; two grandchildren, Joseph T. Jones and Lisa R. and her husband, John W. Brazier; three great-grandchildren, Jason Jones, Logan and Kayla Brazier; daughter-in-law, Joan Jones. Mrs. Jones was a former employee of Signet Bank. Remains rest at the Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 2110 East Laburnum Ave., where friends may call 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Signal Hill Memorial Park. Flowers are welcome, or memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

LAUGHON
Fred Thomas Laughon Jr. died January 14, 2002 in Richmond, Va. He is survived by his wife, Helen Martin Laughon of Richmond; a son, Fred Thomas Laughon III and his wife, Vivi Bergh Laughon of Tallahassee, Fla.; and a daughter, Neville E. Laughon of Richmond; two granddaughters, Tovi Laughon Heffron and her husband, Christopher Keys Heffron and Lissi Laughon Rabon and her husband, A. Tyler Rabon; three great-grandchildren, Thomas Keys Heffron, Patrick Christopher Heffron and Fisher Martin Heffron. Born in Johnson City, Tenn. on April 25, 1915, he was educated in the public schools of Portsmouth, Va. and graduated from the University of Richmond and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Ky., receiving his Th.M. degree. He was honored by the University of Richmond with a DD degree, and Stetson University of Deland, Fla. with a DD degree. He was an honorary member of Florida Blue Key and Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. He was Chaplain at the Florida House of Representatives. He served the Baptist denomination as a member of the Virginia State Foreign Board, Board of Trustees Baptist Foundation of S.C., State Mission Board of Florida, member and president of Radio and Television Commission, Southern Baptist Convention. He served seven pastorates: Gwathmey Baptist Church, Ashland, Va., Second Baptist Church, Richmond, Va., Carlyle Avenue Baptist Church, Louisville, Ky., Pastor of First Baptist Church, Front Royal Virginia from 1942 to 1947, Pastor of Talbot Park Baptist Church, Norfolk, Va. from 1947 to 1953, Pastor of First Baptist Church, Orangeburg, S.C., Pastor of First Baptist Church, Gainesville, Fla. from 1957 to 1972. He served as special assistant to the Radio and Television Commission as a liaison person with the Foreign Mission Board in Richmond from 1972 to 1978. He was invited to supply in many pulpits and was a banquet speaker for business and professional events. He spoke for Rotary conventions in the U.S. and England. Since 1978 he was self-employed. In his woodworking shop he reproduced 18th and 19th century salesman's sample furniture and wooden dolls. His reproductions are sold in Williamsburg as well as to doll collectors all over the world. When the Laughons moved to Richmond, they moved and restored an 18th century home, "Cheswick," located on Franklin Farms on Three Chopt Road. The services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 16, 2002 at the Cannon Memorial Chapel on the campus of the University of Richmond. No flowers please; donations to the charity of your choice.
