John Charles Kenny, lawyer, is dead at 79
Jan 16, 2002
John Charles Kenny, a senior partner in the law firm of Christian & Barton, died Tuesday at his Richmond home. He was 79.
"He was such a fine lawyer. I practiced with him for almost 50 years, and he will be missed by all of us at the firm and by those in the community," said firm chairman R. Harvey Chappell Jr. "He had done a great deal of pro bono work and was very generous with his time."
Mr. Kenny, who specialized in real estate and business law, helped establish a Richmond Bar Association program in which local lawyers volunteer their time to clients needing representation on housing and domestic issues. That program earned the local bar association the ABA's Harrison Tweed Award. The Richmond association in turn awarded him the Pro Bono Publico Award.
He was also honored for pro bono work done throughout his career with the Lewis F. Powell Jr. Pro Bono Award of the Virginia State Bar and Virginia State Bar Association's Pro Bono Publico Award.
"He was a very kind person and had a great passion for the law," said his wife, Anne Whitfield Kenny. "He saw the legal profession as a way he could help others."
A former member of the board of directors of the American Judicature Society, Mr. Kenny was also a director and member of the Executive Committee of the Central Virginia Legal Aid Society.
The New York native was a graduate of Xavier Preparatory Academy and served in the Navy, participating in the invasion of Normandy before completing his bachelor's degree at Fordham University.
In 1948, he earned a law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law and took a job in the legal department of Lawyers Title Insurance Corp. Seven years later, he joined Christian & Barton and was named a partner in about 1960.
Mr. Kenny was not only generous with his time as a lawyer, but as a civic leader and church member.
A director of the ecumenical Sacred Heart Center since 1999, he was a former chairman of the Board of Trustees of St. Joseph's Villa and also had headed the Catholic Diocese of Richmond's Finance Council. In 1994, he was given the Humanitarian Award from the Virginia Chapter of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, where he was a board member and past president.
A former board member of the Richmond Chapter of the American Red Cross, Mr. Kenny was also a supporter of Little Sisters of the Poor and the Hospital Hospitality House at MCV.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Anne Kenny Urban of New York City and Kathryn Kenny Codd of Cambridge, Mass.
Funeral arrangements are pending.

Dr. John D. Hamner Jr. dies at 90
Apr 29, 2001
Losing most of his hearing at age 28 might have prevented Dr. John Daniel Hamner Jr. from becoming a surgeon, but it couldn't keep him from a career in medicine.
He also never let it keep him from dancing.
Dr. Hamner was training to become a surgeon at the Medical College of Virginia in the late 1930s when an influenza-related ear infection left him with no hearing in his left ear and partial hearing in the right.
He decided to leave MCV and pursue his master of public health degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health, graduating in 1940.
Dr. Hamner, who went on to serve for more than three decades as a regional health director in various parts of central Virginia, died Thursday of heart and lung failure. He was 90 and had lived in Ashland for more than 60 years.
Born at Church Road in Dinwiddie County, he graduated from the University of Richmond and earned his medical degree at the Medical College of Virginia in 1935.
From 1940 until 1958, Dr. Hamner was health director for Henrico, Southampton, Hanover, Caroline and King William counties. For the next 10 years, he was regional director for the Virginia Department of Health's Division of Local Health Services. In 1968, Dr. Hamner served as health director for Fluvanna, Goochland and Louisa counties. From 1972 until he retired in 1977, he was health director for Charles City, Goochland, New Kent and Hanover counties.
Dr. Hamner's daughter, Michelle H. Hamner of Ashland, said her father's hearing continued to deteriorate as he aged, but he could always hear the rhythm of the music.
He and his wife, Evelyn Shepherd Hamner, who died in 1998, loved to dance and made a hobby of offering ballroom dancing lessons to family and friends.
A funeral will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church, 201 Henry St., in Ashland, where Dr. Hamner was a member. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery in Ashland.
