Cathy A. James, nurse practitioner, dies
Oct 26, 2001
Women's health nurse practitioner Cathy A. James was known around the world in the field of reproductive endocrinology and infertility nursing.
She was the first American nurse to be named to the international lectureship in her field, and she earned the "REI nurse of the year" honor. In November, Mrs. James was inducted into the American Academy of Nursing, the profession's most prestigious society.
But her greatest joys came from laughing every day, eating chocolate and playing board games on the floor with her seven grandchildren, said Mrs. James' family and friends.
"Her list of accomplishments is overwhelming, but the person she was was even more impressive," said Dr. Karen Knapp, a friend and colleague for the last 16 years.
Mrs. James, of Richmond, died Oct. 17 after a brief battle with cancer. She was 49.
"There was a piece of her that challenged me to be a better person, to be better with patients . . . to really dig in," Dr. Knapp said. "That's the piece I'll carry in my heart."
Mrs. James held bachelor's and master's degrees in nursing, and her career spanned 26 years. She worked to raise the profile of her profession, and her professional honors were numerous.
Mrs. James published papers and lectured all around the world. Back home, she founded the Nurses' Professional Group of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, then helped to create a certification exam and was among the first to pass it.
"We, as a family, really had no idea of her achievements," said Gayle Webster, Mrs. James' stepdaughter. "She was humble. It really didn't matter to her. It was just another of the things that she did."
Throughout her career, Mrs. James worked with infertility patients, helping couples to have children through in vitro fertilization. She spent about 10 years as the nurse coordinator and clinical specialist for the in vitro fertilization program at Virginia Commonwealth University's Medical College of Virginia.
After earning a post-master's certification, Mrs. James became a women's health nurse practitioner and joined the staff at Commonwealth Physicians for Women in 1997. She was the practice's infertility expert, and, as a nurse practitioner, she followed her patients through pregnancy in tandem with a doctor.
"She encouraged everyone, patients and staff alike, to maintain good humor in the midst of stress," said women's health nurse practitioner Joy Lewis, who worked with her. "Cathy had a real knack for putting people at ease."
Dr. Judith Lewis, an associate professor and director of information technology at VCU's School of Nursing, said that a former patient of Mrs. James' decided to become a nurse practitioner instead of a doctor because of Mrs. James.
"I know two of her previous patients, and people just talk about the fact that she made such a difference to them," Dr. Lewis said. "She had a profound influence on her colleagues and patients, and on the profession."
Mrs. James is survived by her husband, Stephen Barry Finkle of Richmond; her parents, Richard and Barbara James of Southern Pines, N.C.; her sister, Lee Roberts of Fayetteville, N.C.; her stepdaughters, Gayle Webster of Mechanicsville and Tobey Kelly of Winchester, Mass., and her stepson, David Finkle of Richmond.
A memorial service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, 9801 Fort King Road. An endowment for a scholarship at VCU's School of Nursing has been established in her name.
