James Staples
Stuart town councilman, James "J.J." Staples, 53, of Stuart, died Friday, Dec. 16, 2005, at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C.
He was born in Patrick County on Sept. 23, 1952, to John Jackson Staples and Mary Rucker Staples. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by two brothers, George Otis and John Staples.
He retired from Stuart Flooring. He had been employed at United Elastic and Stop 8 Convenience Store. He was a graduate of Patrick County High School and attended Patrick Henry Community College. He was a lifetime member of the Stuart Volunteer Fire Dept. He was a member of the Patrick County Jaycees and the Stuart Lions Club. He served on the board for the Patrick County Chamber of Commerce and was a camping coordinator for the Patrick County Beach Music Festival. He was also a past member of the American Red Cross. He was a cameraman for First Christian Church's programs.
In addition to his father, surviving are three sisters, Ollie Spencer of Martinsville, Lucy Moore of Stuart and Marjorie Nowlin of Patrick Springs; and a brother, Henry Staples of Stuart.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Dr. Roger Hagwood officating. Burial will be in the Loggins family cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Melvin A. Thomas
MEADOWS OF DAN -- Melvin Alba Thomas, 83, of Meadows of Dan, died Saturday, Dec. 17, 2005, at RJR Patrick County Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Patrick County on Nov. 17, 1922, to Posey L. Thomas and Rosie Lillie Smart Thomas. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Vernice Rakes and Verda Hall.
He served in the Army/Air Force during World War II and was a member of the VFW Post 8467 in Meadows of Dan. He retired from the Virginia Dept. of Transportation.
Surviving are two sisters, Vera Thomas of Meadows of Dan and Pernie Bowman of Dry Fork; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Stuart. Burial will be in the Laurel Fork Primitive Baptist Church cemetery with military rites given by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends for one hour before the service.
Memorials may be made to the Vesta Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 238, Vesta, Va. 24177.

David L. Hairston
David Leon Hairston, 53, of Wells Hollow Road, Bassett, died Saturday, Dec. 17, 2005, at the University of Virginia Hospital of Charlottesville.
Collins Funeral Services of Bassett is in charge of arrangements.

Richard A. Hall
Richard Andrew Hall, 63, of Bassett, died Saturday, Dec. 17, 2005, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville.
He was born on April 4, 1942 to Boyd Lee Hall and Nellie Craig of Bassett. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, William Boyd "Billy" Hall.
He served in the U.S. Army.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by a son, Richard L. Hall of Bassett; three sisters, Elsie Clifton of Axton, Barbara Phillips of Bassett and Sylvia Foley of Collinsville; a brother, Jimmy Craig of Bassett; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Bassett Funeral Service chapel. Burial will be in Mitchells Chapel in Dugspur.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Bassett Funeral Service.

Alma P. Saunders
Alma Mae Pritchett Saunders, 92, of 507 Armstead Ave., Martinsville, died Saturday, Dec. 17, 2005, at her home.
She was born in Pittsylvania County on June 13, 1913 to Gusta Pritchett and Susie Pritchett. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny Hall Saunders; four sisters, Christine Kellam, Annie Mae Dickerson, Susie Taylor and Geraldine McDaniel; four brothers, Henry Pritchett, Livingstone Pritchett, John Pritchett and Vance Pritchett.
She was a housewife and was a member of St. Paul High Street Baptist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Jovita S. Jones of Martinsville; a son, Jeffrey Saunders of Martinsville; a sister, Maggie Hall of Lanham, Md.; and a grandchild.
The funeral will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paul High Street Baptist Church with the Rev. William A. Shackleford Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Carver Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends a half hour prior to the service and at other times at the home.
Hines Funeral Services is in charge of arrangements.

Flora E. Wade
Flora Ella Wade, 78, of 185 Machine Drive, Martinsville, died Sunday, Dec. 18, 2005, at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem.
Hairston Funeral Home will announce arrangements.

Extension agent
Charles E. Price
dead at age 55

Charles Eugene Price, a longtime 4-H Extension Agent with the Henry County Cooperative Extension Office, died Sunday, Dec. 18, 2005. He was 55.
He was a resident of 67 Kennedy Way, Collinsville.
Price was a member of many organizations including the Virginia Extension Agent Association, state and national associations of Extension 4-H Agents, Virginia Community Resource Development Society, Epsilon Sigma Phi and national honorary extension fraternity. Also, he was chairman of the state component committee on 4-H Mechanical Science and Energy and chairman of the Curriculum Development Committee and Small Engine/Tractor for Virginia 4-H.
Funeral arrangements were incomplete and will be announced by Hines Funeral Services in Martinsville.

Jerry Barker
Jerry Barker, 39, of Bradyville, Tenn., formerly of Martinsville, died Sunday, Dec. 18, 2005, of injuries received in an automobile accident in Tennessee.
McKee-Stone Funeral Services is in charge of arrangements.

Bettie H. Barrow
The graveside service for Bettie Handy Barrow, 87, of Martinsville, who died Dec. 15, 2005, was held Monday at Roselawn Burial Park with Rev. Tracy Freeman officiating.
Pallbearers were S.T. Fulcher Jr., Phillip Woods, Dale Wilson, Morton Haynes, Gene Lawson and Clyde Harrison.
Roselawn Chapel Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Estelle Clark
Estelle Clark, 88, of Bassett, died Monday, Dec. 19, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.
Bassett Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Lee E. Cobbs
The funeral for Lee Edward Cobbs, 47, of Danville, who died Dec. 13, 2005, was held Monday at Mt. Olivet Holiness Church with Dr. Rorer Morrison officiating. Burial was in the Cobbs family cemetery at Axton.
Pallbearers were Ike Reynolds, Eric Reynolds, Anthony Reynolds, Jeremy Clark, Leon Hairston and Junior Gravely.
Hairston Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
