FIELD
Owen Wardell Field Jr., 66, called "Skip" by his family and friends, died unexpectedly but peacefully sometime on September 4, 2001 at his Sterling, Virginia townhouse. On September 11, the day when the World Trade Center, part of the Pentagon, and a field in Pennsylvania were called from ashes to ashes and dust to dust, Skip also was reduced to his Essential Physical Nature. He was born in Richmond, Virginia on December 15, 1934 to Martha Johnson and Owen W. Field and grew up on Richmond's Riverside Drive, living most of the time in the home of his paternal grandparents, Marye Fredericksen and Henry W. Field. Skip was christened at Berryman Methodist Church. Later he and his family lived in Fredericksburg, Falls Church, Fairfax, Norfolk and Culpeper as his father was transferred around Virginia with the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company. Skip also became an employee of the C & P Telephone Company in 1955 and was, in later years, a master craftsman and repairman in various Northern Virginia offices. He fulfilled his military obligation by serving in the United States Marine Corps at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina from March 1957 to June 1959. A member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, he retired from the telephone business in 1989. Some of Skip's greatest fun and profit came during his years driving a "gypsy cab" out of Dulles Airport in his C & P off hours! Shortly before his death, Skip celebrated his eighth year of sobriety in a Twelve Step Program where he walked the Twelve Steps to the best of his ability and saw some of "The Big Book's" Promises come true for him. It was through this recovery program that he found greater Purpose. Skip took those Twelve Steps in the Fellowship of the Stepping Stones. In whom does this man still live? His son, Timothy Wardell Field (Karen) of Reston, Virginia; and grandchildren, Ethan, Abby, and Seth. His daughter, Katherine Field Anderson (Rick) of Newtown, Connecticut; and grandchildren, Sarah and Megan. And in his daughter, Paige Field Childs of Sterling, Virginia. Skip is also survived by his sister, Julia Field McGhee and brother-in-law, Walter L. McGhee, formerly of Richmond, now living in the Toledo, Ohio area. And by his niece, Martha McGhee and nephew, Daryle McGhee, also now of Toledo. An informal Memorial Gathering will be held at Richmond's Forest Lawn Cemetery on Saturday, August 3, 2002 at 11 a.m. Please make any tributes in Skip's memory to your local chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Acknowledgments should be sent to Julia McGhee, 2417 Garden Creek Drive, Maumee, Ohio 43537-1023. "And what is it to cease breathing, but to free the breath from its restless tides, that it may rise and expand and seek God unencumbered?" Kahlil Gibran, "The Prophet"
