Esther Viola Tucker Greene
Nov 16, 2001
There were two things retired teacher Esther Viola Tucker Greene wanted everybody to have: faith and an education, said her daughter, Shelley V. Greene of Richmond.
"She was always encouraging everyone to get an education and learn as much as they could, to never stop learning," Greene said.
Mrs. Greene, who spent 33 years teaching, first in the Chesterfield County Public Schools and then in the Richmond Public Schools, died of cancer Tuesday in a local hospital.
She was 63 and lived in Richmond.
A funeral will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Fifth Street Baptist Church, 2800 Third Ave. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
Coming from a tradition of aunts and sisters who were educators, Mrs. Greene graduated from playing school to teaching school. The Richmond native was a 1953 graduate of Armstrong High School and earned her bachelor's degree in elementary education from Virginia Union University.
She also did graduate study at Boston University and the University of California.
In 1958, she began teaching in Chesterfield County, at Midlothian Elementary School. She later went to the Richmond schools. She taught at Baker and Albert P. Norrell elementary schools, where she taught fourth and fifth grades, and Mosby Middle School, where she retired as a sixth-grade teacher in 1991.
"The subject she liked the most was reading," her daughter said. "She encouraged everyone to read for personal satisfaction. She liked to read about current events."
Having grown up on Navy Hill, she enjoyed working on the committee that organized the annual Navy Hill Reunion and wrote the lyrics of the Navy Hill Song.
Mrs. Greene was baptized when she was 7 years old at Fifth Street Baptist Church, where she was a member for most of her life. She was active at church with the Girl Scouts and served as director of the Youth Choir and Handbell Choir, a Sunday school teacher in the kindergarten department, as secretary and corresponding secretary of the Deaconess Board and as a member of many church Anniversary committees, the JOY organization and the Board of Christian Education.
She sang alto in the sanctuary choir for 45 years and was a member of the Tuesday Bible Class and the Federated Missionary Circle 6.
Mrs. Greene served as second vice president of the National Association of University Women. She was a member of the Henrico Chapter 78 of the Order of the Eastern Star and of the Alpha Phi Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta sorority, where she was tamias, chaplain and chairman of several committees.
She was married for 29 years to Percy B. Greene, who died in 1993.
Survivors besides her daughter include two sisters, Barbara Lee of Richmond and Mary George of Washington.
