BUREK
Barbiala Burek, 89, of Chesterfield, formerly of Scarbro, W.Va., passed away peacefully to a better place September 19, 2002. She is survived by a daughter, Rose Marie Jones and son-in-law, Billy Jones; three grandsons, four great-grandsons, four great-granddaughters, and two great-great-granddaughters. A graveside service will be held 10 a.m. Monday in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill, W.Va.

BURNETTE
Thomas Emmanuel Burnette II, 7, born Sunday, September 25, 1994, went home to the everlasting arms of Jesus on Thursday, September 19, 2002, following post-bone marrow transplant complications. “Tommy” was born with a rare genetic disease called Dyskeratosis Congenita, which causes bone marrow failure. Tommy endured and overcame many obstacles in his short life. He showed us strength, perseverance, and his exuberant love for life. Tommy loved watching TV shows, especially Scooby Doo, Cops, Winnie the Pooh, Blues Clues, and Rolie Polie Olie, to name a few. He enjoyed playing with computer games and fire trucks, and he thrived on the attention of those around him. Through the Colonial Heights homebound school program, Tommy passed first grade and would have enjoyed learning second grade level work this year. Tommy is survived by his parents, Thomas E. and Linette M. Burnette of Colonial Heights; maternal grandmother, Lillian “Nana” Jozwiak, also of Colonial Heights; paternal grandparents, Howard E. and Beulah “Grandma Boots” Burnette of Gray, Tenn.; Uncle Howard and Aunt Kathy Burnette of Richmond; Uncle Harry and Aunt Frances Burnette of Sharpsburg, Ga.; Uncle Gerald and Aunt Kim Jozwiak of Midland, Mich.; Aunt Kathleen Jozwiak of St. Cloud, Minn.; cousins, Jack, Melanie, and Abigail Bruner, and Melissa Burnette, all of Georgia. Tommy was predeceased by his maternal grandfather, Alexander Jozwiak. Our love and appreciation go out to Duke University's Pediatric Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplant Team, especially Dr. Joanne Kurtzberg, and Susan Wood, PNP, for their dedication and compassionate care of Tommy these past three years. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 25, 2002, at the Edgehill Church of Christ, 25609 Grant Ave., Petersburg, with Ministers Bill Voss and Gregg Elrod officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Chester. The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, at the E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights. In lieu of flowers, donations made payable to the Tommy Burnette Fund, care of the Bank of America, 1921 Boulevard, Colonial Heights, Va. 23834, would be appreciated.

CHAPIN
Donald Milton Chapin died on September 20, 2002 at his home in Richmond, Va. He was born September 18, 1919 in South Dakota. He graduated from high school in Los Angeles, Calif., where he was a cadet major of ROTC battalion. On November 4, 1940, he entered on duty with the FBI as a fingerprint technician. He graduated from UCLA and entered Special Agents training in 1950. He served in Knoxville, Tenn., Chattanooga, Tenn., New York City, and Richmond. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Emily Mitchell Chapin; two sons and their wives, David Mitchell and Marie Chapin, and James Donald and Gail Chapin. He is also survived by three lovely granddaughters, Marcy Chapin, Jacqueline Ortiz, and Rachel Chapin. He also leaves one great-grandson, Esteban Ortiz. He is survived by one sister, Maxine Klingelhoefer of Amherst, Nebraska. The family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd. Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. Monday in Greenwood Memorial Gardens. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Welborne United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to St. Luke's UMC, 4110 Fordham Rd., Richmond, Va. 23236 or to the Samaritan Fund at The Hermitage, 1600 Westwood Ave., Richmond, Va. 23227.

CLAY
Jean Meredith Clay, age 80, of Lawrenceville, Va., died Saturday, September 21, 2002. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn Clay Oliver and Robert Oliver of Richmond, Susan Clay Nuckols and Cardwell C. Nuckols of Apopka, Fla. and Dr. Jean M. Clay of Williamsburg; her brother, William Massey Meredith of Richmond; and four grandsons, Mark Oliver of Afton, Justin Oliver of Washington, D.C., Clay Oliver of Richmond and Camden Nuckols of Apopka, Fla. The family will receive friends on Monday, September 23, at 506 Regents Crosse Lane, Apt. 4B, Richmond, between 7 and 9 p.m. Graveside services will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Lawrenceville on Tuesday, September 24, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Bon Secours Hospice, 8143 Staples Mill Rd., Richmond, Va. 23228-2751 or the Albertis Harrison Legacy Project, P.O. CRENSHAW
Paris Evans Crenshaw Sr., 87, died September 21, 2002 at his home in Keswick, Va. He was born September 8, 1915 in Albemarle County. He was the son of the late Charles E. Crenshaw and Maude McCauley Crenshaw. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Benjamin Z. Crenshaw of Baltimore, Md. and Harry L. Crenshaw of Fredericksburg, Va. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Margaree Birckhead Crenshaw; his son, Paris E. Crenshaw Jr. and his wife, Betty of Keswick; two grandchildren, Wanda C. Andrews and her husband, Stanley of Chester, Va. and Lt. Paris E. Crenshaw III and his wife, Helen of Monterey, Calif. He has four great-grandchildren, Joseph and Bryan Andrews and Tatiana and Natasha Crenshaw; two sisters, Ada Marie Kindrick and her husband, Alan of Earlysville, Va., and Louise Jurgens of Springfield, Mo.; numerous nieces, nephews and friends. He was a graduate of Broadus Wood High School and The Jefferson School of Commerce. He worked as a butcher until World War II, where he served in the U.S. Navy. After receiving an Honorable Discharge in 1946 he bought a partnership in the C & D Market in Charlottesville. When he sold his partnership in 1953, he began work at the U.S. Post Office in Charlottesville and retired in 1980. He was an active member of the Coles Point Methodist Church, the Northern Neck Christian Men's Association, the American Legion Post 74, and a member of the Widow's Sons Lodge #60 for 50 years. He and his wife spent the last 20 years fishing, boating and gardening at his beloved Coles Point, Va. The family will receive friends and family at Hill and Wood Funeral Home on Monday, September 23, 2002 from 7 to 8 p.m. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. at Holly Memorial Gardens on Tuesday, September 24, 2002, with the Rev. Jeanette Buys officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hospice of the Piedmont, Suite 200, 1490 Pantops Mountain Place, Charlottesville, Va. 22911.

CROWDER
Departed this life September 16, 2002, Staff Sgt. Otha Crowder, U.S. Army Ret., of Richmond. He is survived by his devoted wife, Helen H. Crowder; three stepsons, five stepgranddaughters, three stepgrandsons, a host of nieces, nephews and cousins, three brothers-in-law, three sisters-in-law, two stepdaughters-in-law, other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Walter J. Manning Funeral Home, 700 N. 25th St., where the family will receive friends Sunday, 5 to 6 p.m. Remains will lie in state Monday, 10 a.m. at Fourth Baptist Church, 28th & P Sts., where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Dr. Grady Powell officiating. Burial Quantico National Cemetery.

CUMMINGS
Dr. Charles E. Cummings Sr. of 3007 Brook Rd. died September 20, 2002. Remains rest at Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Blvd. Funeral notice later.

CURTIS
James E. "Buck" Curtis, 68, of Richmond, a retired mixer for Wonder Bread, departed this life September 20, 2002. The staff of the W.S. Watkins & Son Funeral Home is serving his family.

ELLIS
Mr. Thomas Berkley Ellis Sr., 54, of Mechanicsville, died on September 20, 2002. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Ester Ellis; and his brothers, Brady Ellis and Prescott Mooty. He is survived by his wife, Veronique A. Ellis; two children, Melisa L.E. Sirles and her husband, Shannon and Berk Ellis and his wife, Blair; two stepchildren, David A. and Christopher Joseph Dallaglio; three brothers, Stewart and Lennie Ellis and Dever Carr; one sister, Beverley Fowler; and four grandchildren, Tyler and Darianne Sirles and Samantha and Sydney Ellis. Tom was a loving husband, father and grandfather, he was a member of the National Amputee Golf Association winning several championships, he had won an Emmy while with NBC Sports and was an SKA professional Kingfish angler. A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Fund.

GRAY
Departed this life September 18, 2002, Mrs. Marcella Bower Gray of 1902 Winder St. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Gray Jr.; father, Simon J. Bower. She is survived by two sons, Robert Darnell and Marcus A. Gray; four grandchildren, LaToya, Sheena and Jamal Gray, and Marcus Massenburg; mother, Ida B. Bower; one sister, Ida B. Chambers; three brothers, Simon, Walker and Gerald Bower; five aunts, three uncles, host of nieces, nephews, cousins, five sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law and other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Joseph Jenkins Jr. Funeral Home, 2011 Grayland Ave. Funeral Monday, 1 p.m. at Fifth Baptist Church, 1415 W. Cary St., where remains will lie in state one hour prior to funeral time. Dr. Earl M. Brown, pastor, officiating. Interment Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Family, friends and organizations assemble at the church 12:45 p.m. Monday.

GUTIERREZ
Connie Michelle Gutierrez, 25, passed away Tuesday, August 27, 2002 in Richmond, Virginia after a short illness. She was born on March 15, 1977 in Austin, Texas. Connie is survived by her parents, Augustin and Anna Gutierrez of Dale; her brother, Andrew Gutierrez of Dale; her sister and brother-in-law, Monica and John Grove of Kenosha, Wisconsin; her nephews, Luke and Noah Grove, both of Kenosha; her grandmother, Mary Carrasco of Midland, Texas. She is also survived by her beloved fiance, Marwan Batrouni of Washington, D.C. She leaves behind a loving family of aunts, uncles and cousins, as well as many devoted friends. Connie graduated from Lockhart High School in Lockhart, Texas in 1995. After graduation from Johnson and Wales University in 1999, she began a hotel management career in New York City, N.Y. At the time of her death, she was a director of Revenue Management of Omni Hotel in Richmond, Virginia. A Rosary was said at 7:30 p.m. Friday, August 30, 2002 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lockhart, Texas. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 31, 2002 at St Mary's Catholic Church, 205 W. Pecan, Lockhart, with the Rev. Adam Martinez officiating. Burial was at St. Mary's Cemetery in Lockhart, Texas. Pallbearers included Abhijat Bhasin of Washington, D.C., Mario Davila of Seabrook, Texas, Aaron Gutierrez of Mart, Texas, Christopher Gonzales of Buda, Ernest Rendon Jr. of Austin and Ramon Rendon of Buda, Texas. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2002 at 10 a.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church, 800 E. Grace St., Richmond, Va. This service will be done so that her friends and co-workers who were not able to attend the funeral can share in the "celebration of life" for the caring and compassionate soul that was Connie Michelle Gutierrez. She was always filled with joy and happiness and words of kindness, in spite of her ailments. Memorial contributions can be made to the Pulmonary Hypertension Association.

KIRALY
Helen Daroczy Kiraly, 80, died peacefully on Friday, September 20, 2002. She was born April 13, 1922 in Wharton, N.J. and mostly resided in Cleveland, Ohio, where she was the organist at her father's church and worked as a secretary. Survivors include her husband, Alexander; son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Georgia Kiraly of Midlothian; daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Jim Toms of Columbus, Ohio; two sisters, Barbara Zinser and Aurella Brown; and five grandchildren. The family will receive friends at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., on Sunday, September 22 from 6 to 8 p.m. Graveside services will be held on Monday, September 23 at 12:30 p.m. at Dale Memorial Park in Chesterfield.

Donald Lee Middlebrook, 51, of Hanover, passed away September 18, 2002. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Henry Dandridge Middlebrook and Annie Collins Middlebrook. He is survived by two sisters, Catherine Critcher and Mary Ann Gatewood; two brothers, James E. Middlebrook Sr. and Richard Lee Middlebrook; three nieces, seven nephews; and his longtime friend, Phyllis Carter. Phyllis P. Noe, 58, of Mechanicsville, died Friday, September 20, 2002. She is survived by her brother, Bill Pannell; her sister, Rhonda Turney; her special friends, Linda Tadley, Linda Trott, and Pete Berczes; several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Noe was a nurse for 41 years and a member of Turkey Creek Baptist Church in South Carolina. Remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Claiborne "Snookie" Ogburn, Petersburg; two daughters, Judy O. Reeves and husband, Malcolm E. Reeves of Chesterfield Co., Joan O. Chandler and husband, Woodrow B. Chandler Jr. of Greenville, Va.; five grandchildren; sister-in-law, Alice O. Foster of Colonial Heights; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, September 24, 2002 at 2 p.m. in the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, with the Rev. M. Kenneth Russell, former interim pastor of Elm Street Baptist Church, officiating.
