MITCHELL
Fred Julian Mitchell Sr. of Tappahannock, Va., died March 18, 2002. Mr. Mitchell was born December 6, 1919 to Arthur Roane Mitchell and Matilda Ruth Minor Mitchell of Essex County, Va. He was the widower of Cynthia T. (Micky) Mitchell and was the father of Cynthia F. Mitchell, Debra R. Mitchell of Warsaw, Va., Fred J. Mitchell Jr. and wife, Dale Mitchell, Robin M. Packett and husband, Hugh Packett of Tappahannock, Va. He was the grandfather of Michelle M. Chevalier and husband, Andre Chevalier, Fred J. Mitchell III and wife, Lesa Mitchell, J. Bradley Mitchell, L. Brooke Mitchell, Jessica B. McLaughlin, Ashley Wilson and Chris Wilson, all of Tappahannock, Va. and Lori Self of Warsaw, Va. He was the great-grandfather of Taylor Grace Mitchell of Tappahannock, Va. and Kaleb Gage Self of Warsaw, Va. Other survivors include sister-in-law, Helen Mitchell of Tappahannock, Va.; brother-in-law, Linwood H. Phaup of Richmond, Va.; and a host of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his four brothers, Milton, Mason, Bernard and Benjamin Mitchell; and one sister, Thelma Mitchell Phaup. During World War II, he served as a sergeant with the 29th Infantry Division and was one of the first to come ashore during the D-Day invasion of Omaha Beach in Normandy, France. It was during his time of service in England that he met and married his wife of fifty-four years. He was retired from McGuire Veterans Administration Hospital in 1975 after returning to Essex County from Richmond, Va. He was a member of Beale Memorial Baptist Church and the Tappahannock Pharmacy "Coffee Club." He will be remembered by his family and friends as a man who loved to fish, hunt, grow vegetables, walk the marsh and, more than anything else, dance. The family will receive friends at Marks-Bristow Funeral Home in Tappahannock, Va. on Tuesday, March 19, 2002 from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Marks-Bristow Funeral Home in Tappahannock, Va. on Wednesday, March 20, 2002 at 2 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Tappahannock Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 583, Tappahannock, Va. 22560 or Beale Memorial Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 816, Tappahannock, Va. 22560.

MOORE
Mary Boyle Moore, 84, of Richmond, passed peacefully March 16, 2002. She was the widow of Wilson B. Moore, and preceded in death by her daughter, Patricia M. Bausone. She is survived by two daughters, Mary M. Bowers and Christina M. Thoms; two sisters, Anastasia B. Harley and Margaret B. Clarke; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, and where a Christian Wake service will be held 7:30 p.m. Monday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 12 Noon Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Interment Mt. Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in remembrance to Patricia M. Bausone.

O'NEILL
Helen K. O'Neill, 98, widow of Thomas C. O'Neill, died Sunday, March 17, 2002. Mrs. O'Neill was a resident of Westminster Canterbury House in Richmond. She is survived by a niece, Louise A. Robinson of Washington, D.C. and many other nieces and nephews in Virginia, West Virginia and Zurich, Switzerland. Services will be held 12:30 p.m. Thursday, March 21 at the Greenwood Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday in the chapel at Westminster Canterbury. A reception will follow the service at Westminster Canterbury. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be sent to St. Paul's Catholic Church, 909 Rennie Ave., Richmond, Va. 23227 or the Westminster Canterbury Fellowship Fund, 1600 Westbrook Ave., Richmond, Va. 23227.

OWENS
Spencer Owens, age 81, of Richmond, died Saturday, March 16, 2002. Survived by his wife, Maxine W. Owens; his daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl O. and James G. Rothschild of Manakin-Sabot, Va.; his grandson, Adam S. Rothschild and his wife, Allison W. Rothschild of Richmond; his brother, E.B. Owens of Bedford, Mass.; his sister, Ruth Sweet of Portsmouth, Va. Mr. Owens was a member of Westhampton Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII and was retired from Richmond Newspapers, Inc. with 41 years of service. Remains rest at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, and where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday. Interment Westhampton Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Westhampton Baptist Church.

PEARSON
Margaret Joeleen Pearson, 68, of 82 Kingsbury Drive, Waynesboro, passed away Sunday morning, March 17, 2002 at Augusta Medical Center. She was born April 28, 1933 in Buena Vista, daughter of William Hugh and Hazel T. Bartley Reid. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Robert Keith Pearson. Survivors include her husband, Robert W. Pearson; two daughters, Karen L. Pearson of Richmond and Robin W. Pearson of Lynchburg; one brother, W.H. Reid Jr. of Mechanicsville; three sisters, Mary Violet Chandler and Brenda Heath, both of Mechanicsville and Gloria Thomas of Bristol, Va.; and many friends. A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Augusta Memorial Park by Dr. Fred Holbrook. The family will receive friends 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Reynolds Funeral Service of Waynesboro. Memorial contributions may be made to the Waynesboro First Aid Crew, P.O. Box 1427, Waynesboro, Va. 22980 or the Preston Yancey Fire Dept., P.O. Box 177, Fishersville, Va. 22939.

PEATROSS
Curtis "Grannie" Peatross, owner of Peatross Trash Service, of Richmond, Va. formerly of Caroline Co., departed this life March 18, 2002. Remains rest at the Henry W. Dabney Funeral Home, 518 N. Washington Hwy., Ashland. McCarthy, Director.

SHAW
William Alton Shaw Sr., 41, of Oregon Hill went to be with the Lord on March 16, 2002. He was the son of the late Harry C. and Fannie B. Shaw. He is survived by his sons, William (Billy) A. Shaw Jr. and J. Cameron Shaw; his sisters, Nancy Logan, Dottie Crigger and husband, Jerry; his brothers, Craig Shaw and wife, Patricia, Jimmy Lee Shaw and Alfred W. Shaw; nieces, Terry, Lisa, Diane and Nicole; three great-neices and one great-nephew. William will be missed by many lifelong friends and a large extended family. The family will receive friends again 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave. Graveside service Wednesday 11 a.m. at Riverview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the family.

SNYDER
O. May Snyder, 86, died Sunday, March 17, 2002. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, she had been a Hampton resident since 1996. Her husband of 59 years, W. Vernon Snyder, preceded her in death. Mrs. Snyder is survived by her son, Bill and wife, Loretta of Carlisle, Pa.; her daughter, Verna and husband, Carl Brundin of Hampton; four grandchildren, and six great-grandsons. A service of death and resurrection will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 23 at Bethany United Methodist Church. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Bethany United Methodist Church, 1509 Todds Lane, Hampton, Va. 23666. Arrangements are under the care of Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home in Hampton.

TURNER
Retired U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Harry Turner, 84, of Tarboro, N.C., died Friday, March 15, 2002. He was born in Utica, N.Y., the son of the late Joseph F. Turner and Beatrice Wadsworth Turner. He was married to Jane Jones Turner for 57 years. They were former residents of Newport News, Va. Harry enjoyed his career as an officer of the United States Air Force for over 30 years. He retired from Langley Air Force Base in 1971. He was a veteran of WWII where he served a tour in the Central Pacific and a tour in the Aleutians. He was also a veteran of the Korean War where he served a tour in Korea and a tour in the Central Pacific. He had the privilege of serving two tours at the Pentagon. He received numerous awards for his service. He was of the Methodist faith and a member of Masonic Lodge No. 6 of Mount Clemens, Mich., the Scottish Rite Bodies of Detroit, Mich. and the Elks Lodge No. 366 of Hampton, Va., and a lifetime member of the Retired Officers Association. Harry leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Jane; his daughter, Sheila Turner-Lanier and her husband, Ronald of Whitakers, N.C. Funeral services will be conducted 12:30 p.m. Monday, March 18, at Peninsula Funeral Home by the Rev. William R. Kyle Jr. Interment with military honors will immediately follow in Peninsula Memorial Park.

TYLER
William A. Tyler of 2835 Richmond-Henrico Tnpk. entered eternal rest March 14, 2002. Cherishing his memory are one brother, Melvin B. Mrs. Frances VanCleef Watson, 63, of Chesterfield, died Monday, March 18, 2002. Survived by her husband, Frank D. Watson III; two sons, David Kirk Watson and wife, Holli and Daniel Kit Watson and wife, Jennifer; her mother, Mrs. Mary Louise VanCleef; four grandchildren, Alex, Adam, Joshua and Russell Watson; one brother, Steven VanCleef. Mrs. Watson was a member of Stockton Memorial Baptist Church. Departed this life March 15, 2002, Mr. Fred Wood Jr. of Richmond. He is survived by his wife, Michelle B. Wood; one daughter, Azriel Wood; three stepsons, Wadell and Duan Blackston and Carlos Allen; two stepdaughters, Latonya Blackston and Felicia Blackston-Hunt; a host of grandchildren, one niece, one nephew, a host of cousins; one son-in-law, Roy Hunt; mother and father-in-law, one sister-in-law, other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Walter J. Manning Funeral Home, 700 N. 25th St., where the family will receive friends Tuesday, 7 to 8 p.m., and where funeral services will be held Wednesday, 2 p.m. Mr. Bernard Carter officiating.

Charlotte W. Young, 65, of Ruther Glen, Va., passed on March 15, 2002. A celebration of life service will be held on Tuesday, March 19 at St. John Baptist Church in Milford, Va. from 7 to 9 p.m., where a homegoing service will be held on Wednesday, March 20 at 1 p.m. Rev. Dr. W.G. Berryman will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Services of comfort entrusted to C.W. Edwards Funeral Home of Bowling Green.

ASSAID
Carleton Assaid, 65, of Richmond, formerly of Roanoke, died Thursday, August 1, 2002. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Nancy M. Assaid; two daughters and their husbands, Dawn Bowles and Rick, Anne Trippeer and Ken; five grandchildren, Michelle and Allie Bowles, Spencer, Grayson and Harrison Trippeer. Mr. Assaid will be greatly missed by his family and friends. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday (today) at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd. Entombment Westhampton Memorial Park Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.

Mrs. Esther Shumaker Balderson, age 63, of Farmville, died August 1, 2002. She was the daughter of Otelia W. Shumaker and the late Floyd H. Shumaker Sr. She is survived by two sons and wives, David Balderson II and wife, Teri, Russell Balderson and wife, Shelley; one sister, Emma S. Sisson of Hopewell; two brothers, Carlton Shumaker of Wakefield, Kan. and Fred Shumaker of Cartersville; five grandchildren. Memorial services 2 p.m. Saturday, August 3 at Doyne-Burger-Davis Funeral Home, Farmville. The family will receive friends following the service. CRENSHAW
Mr. William Tucker Crenshaw, 80, of Richmond, passed away on July 31, 2002. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Doris W. Crenshaw; three nephews and his niece. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave. Interment to follow in Riverview Cemetery.
