NEWMAN
Ralph Belton Newman Jr., 50, of Holly Springs, N.C., died Thursday, August 1, 2002. A memorial service will be held on Monday, August 5, 2002 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 SE Maynard Road in Cary, N.C. Surviving are his wife, Carol Zeissler Newman of the home; his mother, Doris Whitten of Chase City, Va.; three daughters, Velvet Lynn Newman, Crystal Newman, Ivy Newman; and two grandchildren, Benjamin Gage and Donna Reine. He was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Belton Newman Sr. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the American Cancer Society, 11 S. Boylan Ave., Raleigh, N.C. 27603. Arrangements by Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary, N.C. (919) 467-8108.

NEWTON
Charlene Barefield Newton passed away July 30, 2002. Memorial service Sunday, August 4 at 5 p.m. at Skipwith Baptist Church, 1900 Skipwith Rd. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Skipwith Baptist Church Endowment Fund.

PETERS
Catherine Cunningham Brown Peters of Richmond, Virginia passed away July 31, 2002 following a period of declining health. The daughter of the late James T. Cunningham and Anna S. Cunningham, she was born in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1921. Prior to her retirement, Mrs. Peters was the executive director of the Delaware County Alcohol Council, a United Way agency in Delaware, Ohio offering alcohol abuse education and counseling services. Mrs. Peters was a member of the Junior League of Indianapolis and the Christamore House Guild, Inc. of Indianapolis. Her husband, Charles Taft Peters of Delaware, Ohio and her brother, James Andrew Cunningham of Indianapolis, Indiana predeceased her. Survivors include her daughters, Sarah L. Brown and Greta B. Peters; and her stepson/son-in-law, Charles Taft Peters Jr., all of Richmond; granddaughter, Heather Wedvick Mathews and her husband, Andrew C. Mathews of Los Angeles, Calif.; grandsons, Jonathan Chase Brown and Charles Taft Peters III of Richmond; a niece, two nephews, and many friends in Richmond, in Delaware and in Indianapolis. Mrs. Peters' funeral and interment will be in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis, on August 5, 2002. Flanner and Buchanan Mortuary in Indianapolis is handling the arrangements. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, August 11, 2002 at 5 p.m. at Second Presbyterian Church, 5 N. Fifth Street, Richmond. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial contribution to The Orchard School, 615 W. 64th Street, Indianapolis, Ind. 46260.

POLLARD
Mrs. Imogene Gibson Pollard, 91, of Newport News, died on August 2, 2002 in Richmond. She was preceded in death by six brothers and sisters and is survived by her husband, Wendell (Snub) Pollard; son, Wendell Pollard Jr.; daughter, Betty Ryland Pollard; two sisters, Ellen Loving and Virginia Crowder; brother, Mason Gibson; two grandsons, Thomas O. and Jonathan C. Pollard; and one great-grandson, Christopher T. Pollard. Mrs. Pollard was born in Goochland, Va., grew up in Columbia, Va., and after her marriage to Snub, moved to Richmond and Newport News. She was an active member at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Newport News for over 20 years. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, and where funeral services will be held 11:30 a.m. Monday. Interment to follow in Westhampton Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Lakewood Manor in Richmond, St.John's Episcopal in Columbia, or St. Stephen's Episcopal in Newport News.

POWELL
Harold Walker Powell, 77, of Mechanicsville, died Friday, August 2, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Edna Robins Powell; a son, David H. Powell and his wife, Linda of Fredericksburg; a daughter, Sandra P. Carden of Mechanicsville; a sister, Kathryn P. Wood of Mechanicsville; and three grandchildren, Jonathon Powell, Jessica Carden and Daniel Powell. Friends may call 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Atlee Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 9271 Shady Grove Road, Mechanicsville, where services will be held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Interment Signal Hill Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to West End Alliance Church, 3915 Francistown Road, Richmond, Virginia 23294.

RIDLEY
Cora Lee Ridley of 3900 Peyton Ave. departed this life July 30, 2002. A native of Southampton Co., a retired technician with AT&T. Survivors include one son, Tavares L. Ridley; two sisters, Lucy Gay and Eunice Ridley; two brothers, William L. Ridley and W. Randolph Ridley; one grandchild, Jayshawn Ridley; a longtime family friend, Isiah Roach; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and a host of dear friends. Funeral services will be held Monday, August 5 at 1 p.m. from the Fifth Baptist Church. The Rev. Earl Brown officiating. Burial will be in the Butts Family Cemetery, Courtland Va. Viewing will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Joseph Jenkins Funeral Home, 2011 Grayland Ave. Her remains will rest in the church from 11 a.m. until hour of service. Engram Funeral Home, Courtland in charge of arrangements.

RIKE
Miss Dorothy Victoria Rike, 99, of Richmond, died at a local nursing home Thursday, August 1, 2002. She was daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Englehardt Gustave Rike; and sister of the late Frances Rike Ewing. She is survived by her niece, Dorothy Ewing Ferrell and her husband, James William Ferrell III; a great-niece, Laura Elizabeth Wingfield Ferrell; and a great-nephew, James William Ferrell IV. A graduate of Stuart Hall School and the Julliard School of Music, Miss Rike was a member of St. James's Episcopal Church. She was a buyer for Thalhimers and retired as a buyer for Montaldo's. A graveside funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, August 5 in Hollywood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Stuart Hall School in Staunton or St. James's Episcopal Church.

SCHAAF
Edward M. Schaaf Jr., 88, of Richmond, died Friday, August 2, 2002. He was the widower of Edith Laughon Schaaf. He is survived by three children, Edward M. Schaaf III and his wife, Frances, F. Behle Schaaf and his wife, Dona, Elizabeth S. Chase and her husband, Jon; eight grandchildren, Matthew, Alexander, Kristan, Christopher, Whitney, Kelsey, Courtney and Erin; and his special friend, Lucille O'Neil. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where the family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. Monday at Hollywood Cemetery. Mr. Schaaf was a graduate of the University of Richmond in 1936, and was a member of the football team from 1934 until 1936, serving as co-captain in 1935. He was inducted into the University of Richmond Athletic Hall of Fame in 1990. He was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He served in the U.S. Infantry during WWII, was a member of the Commonwealth Club and retired from Philip Morris as Vice President of Manufacturing after 41 years of service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.

SHIRLEY
Frances Collins Shirley passed away August 1, 2002 after a long and inspiring battle with breast cancer. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Elvin. Her spirit lives on through her family. Survivors include her children, Gayle Snelson and her husband, Earl; Steven Shirley and his wife, Hope; Cindy Leisling and her husband, Fred; Mark Shirley and his wife, Loressa. She was very proud of her nine grandchildren, Diane Martin, Chris Warner, Grey Snelson, Ric Snelson, Kasey Shirley, Troy Leisling, Taylor Shirley, Brooke Leisling and Kristen Cios. She had three great-grandchildren, Paige and Luke Warner and Jason Martin. She leaves behind her beloved friend of 43 years, Louise Fowler; as well as brothers, Eugene and Stuart Collins; and sisters, Mildred Gantz and Margaret Crowder. She was preceded in death by her brother, James. She was a fine Christian to whom Elvin, family and church meant everything. "And what is it to cease breathing but to free the breath from its restless tides, that it may rise and expand and seek God unencumbered." The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 South Laburnum Ave. Funeral services will be held at Pioneer Baptist Church, 3140 Darbytown Rd., at 3 p.m. on Sunday. Robert Mark Arensmeyer, age 80, of Glen Allen, passed away Saturday, March 2, 2002. Mr. Arensmeyer was the husband of Regina Arensmeyer (nee Mack). He was born in Carlinville, Ill., and a graduate of Maryville College. Father of Mark Arensmeyer of Richmond, Va., Maggie Arensmeyer of St. Louis, Mo., John Arensmeyer of Frederick, Md., Ellen Hulihan of Glen Allen, Va., and Bob Arensmeyer Jr. of Wilkes Barre, Pa. Poppy/Papa of Lee Ellen, Amy, Jillian, Paige, Bridget, Johnny, Beth and Robert Mark Arensmeyer III, Kelly, Molly and Patrick Hulihan. Uncle of Marilyn Bereuter, Sharon Earll, Mary Kaiser, Susan Rufkahr, Linda Graham and Steve Arensmeyer. Mr. Arensmeyer, a native of St. Louis, was a graduate of South Side/St. Mary's High School, received a BA from St. Louis University and an MBA from Washington University and became a CPA. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. When he retired in 1986, he was Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer and member of Board of Directors of Peoples Drug Stores in Alexandria, Va. He was a member of NACDS and Financial Executives International. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate Masses or a contribution to your local Hospice. A "Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated" at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Glen Allen at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 5. Entombment at Westhampton Memorial Park. BASS
Elizabeth Bruce Bass, age 96, of Lunenburg County, died Friday, March 1, 2002. Surviving are cousins, Jack and Barbara Eubank of Dinwiddie County. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Ontario Christian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall after the service. Remains rest at the Browning Funeral Home.

Ruth Crenshaw Bowles, 96, of Richmond, widow of Stover H. Bowles, died Saturday, March 2, 2002. She is survived by her sister, Aileen Crenshaw McKenney; one niece, Carey McKenney Thompson; three nephews, R. Gordon McKenney, Clarke Crenshaw and G. Lee Crenshaw. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 5, 2002 in Hollywood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to the Lakewood Manor Healthcare, 1900 Lauderdale Dr., Richmond, Va. 23233. Arrangements by the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home.

Annie P. Brice, 93, of Goochland, Va., formerly of Richmond, Va., departed this life Friday, March 1, 2002 at the Meadows Nursing Center. She leaves to mourn, one granddaughter, Annie Mae Johnson; one grandson-in-law, Joseph Johnson Sr.; one sister, Louise Carter; five great-grandchildren, Joseph Jr., Edward Gloria Payne, Ida Mae Ezell, and Sherill E.; two great-granddaughters-in-law, Sherill J. and Cynthia; two great-grandsons-in-law, Willie Ezell Jr. and Robert Payne Jr.; ten great-great-grandchildren, Joseph III, Edward Jr., Dianna, Christopher, Ariel, Willie III, Brittany, Amara, Tiara, and Robert III; one sister-in-law, Edmonia Brice; and a host of nieces, great-nieces, nephews, great-nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral services will be held today, March 4, 2 p.m. at the chief Cornerstone Baptist Church. Remains will lie in state one hour prior to service. Rev. Adlai Allen, pastor, officiating. Departed this life February 28, 2002, Mrs. Evelyn virginia cox of 1900 N. 19th Street. She is survived by two daughters, Joan Roots and Jean Cox; one son, Walter Cox; seven grandchildren, Keith, Sierra, Ciceley and Michael Cox, Evelyn Davis, Kevin and Tony Jarrell; ten great-grandchildren; one sister, Queen Keene; one brother, James W. Smith; several nieces, nephews and cousins; four sisters-in-law, and other relatives and friends; lifelong friend, Dorothy Davis. Remains rest at Joseph Jenkins Jr. Funeral Home, 2011 Grayland Ave. Funeral Tuesday, 1 p.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church, 2420 Venable Street, where remains will lie in state one hour prior funeral time.
