Stephanie Dean Futter, 32, of Mechanicsville, passed away on September 5, 2002. She is survived by her mother, Carolyn Futter; father, Martin Futter; sister, Elizabeth Boltz; her nephews, Nicholas and Christopher Boltz; brother, Matthew Futter; and fiance, Bob Bastek of Mechanicsville. A memorial service will be held to celebrate her life on Sunday, September 15, 2002 at 2 p.m. at the Mount Vernon Baptist Church, 11220 Nuckols Road, Glen Allen, Virginia. Stephanie will be buried in New York City on Tuesday, September 17, 2002, by her family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation or to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Wallace J. "Bubba" Hill, 50, of Mechanicsville, passed away September 11, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Judy; parents, Patricia and Wallace of Essex, New York; daughter, Kirsten and her husband, Michael; grandpuppy, Derby; and devoted friends. He was devoted to golf, sports, and being a professional letter carrier of the US Postal Service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the MCV Bone Marrow Transplant Program, 1300 East Marshall Street, North Hospital, 10th Floor, P.O. Box 980157, Richmond, Va. 23298-0157. A memorial service will be held in Essex, New York, on Saturday, September 14, 2002.

Patsy Atwood Jones, 66, of Richmond, went to be with the Lord Jesus Christ Thursday September 12, 2002. She is survived by her husband, Leonard P. Jones; two sons, Leonard P. Jr. and Michael P. Jones; two granddaughters, Cragan and Heather Jones; mother, Lilly Atwood of Sparta, N.C.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Rev. Larry and Joy Atwood of Sparta, N.C. and Boyden and Gelene Atwood of Boone, N.C.; uncle, Oscar Evans of Sparta, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews. Her remains rest at Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, and where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday. Rudolph R. (Rudy) Lee, 69, of 2055 St. James Rd., Richmond, departed this life on September 10, 2002. He is survived by his loving wife, Louise Lee; one daughter, Jeanette Lee of Arizona; one son, Wayne Lee; four sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law; two devoted friends, David Carter and Carolyn Reaves; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Professional services provided by Crawley Funeral Home, 3810 Meadowbridge Rd. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at St. James Baptist Church, 2169 New Market Rd. Remains will lie in state from 12 noon until hour of service at 2 p.m. Rev. Grady Powell officiating. Rev. Dr. Andrew White eulogist. Interment St. James Cemetery. LEWIS
John Merry Lewis Jr., lifelong Culpeper native and retired farmer, age 78, died on Wednesday, September 11, 2002 at his residence in the country. He was the son of the late John Merry Lewis Sr. and Martha Griffin Lewis. Mr. Lewis was a dedicated member of New Salem Baptist Church. He was a charter member of the Salem Volunteer Fire Department, which had recognized him with numerous awards for his service to the fire department. He was a former member of the Culpeper Democratic Committee, the Culpeper Agricultural Stabilization Board and of the Virginia Beef Cattle Association. He was preceded in death by a brother, Russell H. Lewis; and a sister, Gertrude D. Lewis. He is survived by his sister, Mrs. Virginia Lewis Dalton of Richmond; a niece, Mrs. Linda Lewis Poulin of Readfield, Maine; and two great-nieces. The family will receive friends at their home, 12613 Stonehouse Mountain Road, Culpeper, Virginia. A memorial service will be held Monday, September 16 at 2 p.m. at New Salem Baptist Church with Rev. Sanford L. Martin officiating. A private family interment will be held at Fairview Cemetery. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in memory of Mr. Lewis to the New Salem Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. MAHONE
Lanny Mahone, 60, died September 11, 2002 in Virginia Beach. Mr. Mahone was born in Richmond and was the son of the late Herbert G. and Nell Wright Mahone of Wheats Valley, Virginia. Mr. Mahone was an associate of MMM Design Group in Norfolk and was employed with them for fourteen years as Senior Architect. He previously was a principal in the firm of TDFB, Inc. in Richmond, Va. He was on the Board of Directors at Seagate Colony in Virginia Beach and was a member of American Institute of Architects. He was preceded in death by a sister, Glenda Mahone. Survivors include his wife, Lorraine DiFiore Mahone of Virginia Beach; two sons, Jeffrey N. Mahone and his wife, Teresa, Keith F. Mahone and his fiance, Erin Lessin, all of Richmond, Va.; their mother, Dorothy Mahone; two brothers, Gerald Mahone and his wife, Rita of Chesterfield, Va., Michael Mahone of Richmond, Va.; and one sister, Gayle Henry and her husband, Dave of Magnolia, Texas. A memorial service will be conducted 4 p.m. Sunday at Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd. Mrs. Frances Ramsey Malone, age 74, of Lawrenceville, Va., died September 12, 2002. She is survived by her husband, Needham Odell Malone; and a sister, Eugenia Ramsey Ruddock of Billings, Montana; four nieces and ten nephews. Graveside services will be conducted 3 p.m. Saturday at Reedy Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Freeman. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Special Ed. MILLS
Frances Luck Mills, 85, of Montpelier, widow of Jeff Mills, passed away in Winston-Salem, N.C. on Friday, September 13, 2002. She is survived by two sons, Lewis T. Mills of Topeka, Kan. and W.J. (Buddy) Mills of Beaverdam; a daughter, Jerelene M. Richards of Winston-Salem; one brother, W.T. (Junior) Luck of Bumpass; a sister, Goldie L. Mills of Montpelier; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Remains rest at the Beaverdam Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday. Services will be held at Bethany Christian Church at 3 p.m. Sunday. Interment Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery, Montpelier. MURPHY
Carl Francis Murphy, 61, of Powhatan and formerly of Richmond, died September 12, 2002. He is survived by his daughter, Sabrina M. Marshall of Powhatan; sons, Earl James Murphy of Appomattox and Carl Samuel Murphy of Kenbridge; seven grandchildren, Jonathan, Rachel, Krystal and Emily Marshall, Carl, Daniel and Matthew Murphy; two sisters, Janice M. Smith of Indianapolis, Ind. and Debbie Roller of Topeka, Kan.; one brother, Ryan J. Murphy of Clarinda, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl J. and Margaret T. Murphy; and a brother, Duane J. Murphy. Mr. Murphy worked for Encompass of Richmond and was a retired gunnery sergeant, serving two Tours of Duty in Vietnam, receiving Good Conduct Medal 2nd Award, Vietnam Service Medal with Three Stars, Vietnamese Campaign Medal with Device National Defense Service Medal and the Presidential Unit Citation among others. To the end he remained a perfect example of a true Marine, Semper Fi. The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Clarke Funeral Home, Kenbridge, Va., where funeral services will be conducted Sunday, September 15, 2 p.m. Interment in Dundas Baptist Church Cemetery, Dundas, Va. PROPST
Carolyn Daiger Propst, 40, of Woodbridge, died on Thursday, September 12, 2002. Mrs. Propst was a financial advisor for Regional Finance. Survivors are her husband, Michael Lynn Propst; daughter, Pamela Ann Propst; her parents, Richard and Delphine Daiger of Montross; and a brother, Richard Merle Daiger. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, September 15 at 3 p.m. at Nomini Baptist Church, Montross, Va., with interment in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Welch Funeral Home, 17546 Kings Hwy., Montross, Va., from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday. SANFORD
Charlotte Bruce Massey Sanford, 73, passed away Thursday, September 12, 2002. She was predeceased by her parents, William Broaddus Massey Sr. and Charlotte Bruce Davis. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Thomas D. Sanford; son, Thomas D. Sanford Jr. and wife, Virginia; daughter, Susan Campbell; brothers, W. Broaddus Massey Jr. and wife, Beverly, John Davis Massey and wife, Susan; sister, Caroline A. Massey Shreve and husband, Dan; and many nieces and nephews. Charlotte graduated from Mary Washington College. Her love of art and people was a primary inspiration during her life, which led to her extensive work with a tiny group committed to helping abused women and those released from prison. She helped establish Emmaus House, now east of Fredericksburg, Va. She taught children with dyslexia at Riverside School for numerous years and later as a highly respected freelance teacher. During this time she focused on working with elementary children with specific learning disabilities. For the last 15 years Charlotte led in the expanded work of the Community Outreach Ministry of the First Baptist Church located at Boulevard and Monument. Her vision and service helped inspire others. A memorial service to celebrate Charlotte's life will be held in the Chapel at the First Baptist Church in Richmond, Va. on Tuesday, September 17 at 2 p.m. Prior to the service, the family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Adams Room. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to the First Baptist Church or St. Jude's Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. Arrangements are being handled by the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave.

TREW
Helen Eye Trew, 80, passed on from this world to the next on Sunday, September 8, 2002. She was the widow of I. Frederick Trew. She is survived by her daughter, the Rev. April Trew Greenwood; her son-in-law, the Rev. D. Richard Greenwood III; her granddaughters, Christian and Elisabeth; her brother, Bruce Berlin Eye; and her sister-in-law, Barbara Sullivan. Mrs. Trew earned both a Bachelor's and a Master's Degree from the University of Virginia. She taught elementary students for 38 years. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she was a very active member of the Episcopal Church. Throughout her life, she generously supported third world missions and will be remembered for her simplicity of life. She lived simply so that others might simply live. A celebration of her life and ministry will be held Saturday, September 14 at 1 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Ivy, Va. Directions: from I-64 exit 124, go west on US 250 for 2.1 miles to US 250 Bypass West for another 4.3 miles. Turn right on to VA 601 for 0.3 miles and then continue straight on VA 601 for 3.6 miles. Turn right on US 250 for 0.4 miles into Ivy, go under overpass, and take first right (Owensville Rd.) to St. Paul's on right (#851). In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made be The Dominican Republic Fund which helps to build schools, orphanages and churches, c/o The Episcopal Diocese of Virginia, 110 W. WALKER
Gladys Mae Walker, 82, of Colonial Heights died September 12, 2002 in Colonial Heights Convalescent Center. Mrs. Walker was the daughter of the late Guy C. and Annie Mae Spivey Lane. She is survived by her husband, William M. Walker of Colonial Heights; two sons, Jerry M. Walker of Petersburg, Terry D. Walker and his wife, Susan; a grandson, Kevin M. Walker; a granddaughter, Jennifer M. Walker, all of Richmond; two first cousins, Mrs. Bertha Morene of Hopewell, Mrs. Mary Spivey Carter of Franklin; several nieces and nephews and many friends. A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, September 16, 2002 in the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home with interment to follow at Southlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Flowers are welcome or you may make contributions in her memory to either Mt. Myrtle H. "Sue" Walsh, 61, of Glen Allen, Va., died Thursday, September 12, 2002. She is survived by her husband, Garrett J. "Joe" Walsh Jr.; two daughters, Donna Sinnery and her husband, Don of Franklin, Mass. and Debbie Smith and her husband, Ray of Mechanicsville, Va.; a sister, Dorothy Beard of Augusta, Ga.; and four grandchildren, Travis and Cory Smith of Mechanicsville, Brandon and Briana Sinnery of Franklin, Mass. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, and where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday. Paul Vincent Ward Sr., 60, of Blackstone, formerly of Mechanicsville, passed away September 12, 2002. He is survived by his children, Paul Ward Jr. and his wife, Sherry and Scott Ward and his wife, Carol; two sisters, Carolyn Ballard and Pamelia Ward; a brother, Kenneth Ward; and four grandchildren, Kristin, Trey, Ashleigh and Hunter. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, and where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday. WILKINSON
Kenneth Lee Wilkinson of Richmond died September 12, 2002. He is survived by his sister, Carol W. Abbott; daughter, Anne Washbon; two grandchildren; and a dear friend, Helen Mika. Mr. Wilkinson worked for RF&P Railroad for many years and retired from Philip Morris R&D and was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday in Maury Cemetery.
