KANWAR
Saroj Kumari Kanwar of Midlothian, Va., passed away unexpectedly on Friday, May 17, 2002. She was 54 years old and had lived with her children in Midlothian for the past ten years. She devoted the past five years working as an accountant at the Richmond YWCA, supporting a cause in which she deeply believed. Mrs. Kanwar was born in India on December 22, 1947 and received her masters of political science from Punjab University in Chandigarh (India). She was married to the late Narinder Singh Kanwar in January 1974. She is survived by her three children, Vishal, Minilla and Navneet (Virginia); parents, Kanwar Kartar Chand and Leela Devi (India); sisters, Anita Thakur (Texas) and Kusum Mankotia (India); brothers, Inder Dev Singh, Bharat Dev Singh and Maj. Satinder Singh (all of India); and many other close relatives. A devoted mother and best friend to her children, she taught them love, truth, integrity, strength and kindness. As a spiritual person, she was able to touch the lives of many. Traditional Hindu cremation and memorial services were held in Richmond on Saturday, May 18, 2002. In lieu of flowers, the Kanwar children request that contributions be made to the YWCA of Richmond in loving memory of their mother.

LAVENDER
Cecil Lavender, 86, of Richmond, went to be with the Lord on May 24, 2002. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Thelma; his daughter, Bonnie Langston; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; his sister, Nancy Corker; and a host of nieces and nephews. He retired as an officer with the Richmond Police Dept., serving 32 years, with the last 12 as a mounted police officer. He served in the Navy during World War II. The family will receive friends at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave. from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and Monday. Services will be held 11 a.m. on Tuesday. LINTHICUM
Nellie Virginia Boley Linthicum, age 78, of 1400 Bryant Street, Clifton Forge, died Friday, May 24, 2002 at the Alleghany Regional Hospital, Low Moor. She was born in Bealeton, Virginia on December 27, 1923, a daughter of the late James B. and Bertha S. Cubbage Boley. Mrs. Linthicum was a retired school teacher from the Louisa County public school system, where she was named Distinguished Teacher of the Year, a member of the Clifton Forge Baptist Church, and was a graduate of Longwood College and Bluefield Baptist College. She was a teacher of children, starting in a one-room school house, a beloved Bible study teacher in numerous churches throughout Virginia as she served in the role of pastor's wife. She was a grandmother to several international exchange students hosted by her son and daughter-in-law, J. Glenn and Julia Linthicum. She is survived by her husband, Ray Cottingham Linthicum Sr.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ray C. Linthicum Jr. and wife, Joy of Orange, Calif., and Rev. J. Glenn Linthicum and wife, Julia of Clifton Forge, Va.; two sisters, Rosalie Woodward and Annie Baldwin, both of Lignum, Va.; six grandchildren, Robert Linthicum of Anaheim, Calif., Herbert Clements of Avon, N.C., Jonathan M. Linthicum of Clifton Forge, Jane E. Linthicum of Indianapolis, Ind., Jim R. Linthicum, and Allen Joe Linthicum of Muncie, Ind.; eight great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, two foster daughters. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by one daughter, Janet Gayle Linthicum Clements in 1985; six brothers, Golder, James, Wilbur, Victor, Russell and John Boley; three sisters, Evelyn, Louise and Ella. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 30, 2002 from the Clifton Forge Baptist Church, with Rev. Mark Miller and Pastor J. Glenn Linthicum officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Nicely Funeral Home in Clifton Forge. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, May 31, 2002, from the Hillcrest Cemetery, Louisa, Virginia. Interment will follow. LOMAN
Ida E. Loman, 88, of Mechanicsivlle, N.Y., died Friday, May 24, 2002. She was the mother of Janeanne Russell and her husband, Giles, Cooperstown, Katherine M. Waldron and her husband, Terry, Mechanicsville, Thomas H. Loman and his wife, Evelyn, Richmond, Paul M. Loman and his wife Christine, Syracuse, and David J. Loman and wife, Maria, Guilderland. She was grandmother to 17 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, and sister of Charles Francis Bothwell, Troy. Her funeral will be Tuesday at 10:15 a.m. from the T.L. Cassidy Funeral Home, 126 N. Second Ave., Mechanicsville and at 11 a.m. at the Assumption St. Paul Church. Contributions to the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, 385 Waterlief-Shaker Rd., Latham, N.Y. 12110 or the John H. MASINI
Letitia Crescioli Masini, 79, of Richmond, died Thursday, May 23, 2002. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Amulio (Joe) Masini; three children, Pat and Glenn Hiatt, Jerry and Connie Masini, Anita and Bob Schepker; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; one sister, Lelia Crescioli; and two brothers, Tito and Louis Crescioli. Mrs. Masini served as Grand Trustee of the Grand Lodge of Virginia (O.S.I.A.) and a member of the Giuseppe Verdi Lodge of Richmond, Va. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., where the family will receive friends Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. with a Christian Wake at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Tuesday 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Interment Greenwood Memorial Gardens. MILLER
Memorial services for Mrs. Kendall Berezoski Miller will be held June 1, 2002 at 3 p.m. at Richmond Christian School. Mrs. Miller, 65, of Aiken, S.C., wife of Chaplain Col. Philip O. Miller Jr., died May 12, 2002. She was the daughter of the late Clements T. Berezoski and Lillian Kendall Berezoski. She received her BA Degree in Music from James Madison University. She was a teacher at Amberg Elementary in Germany, Gill School, Bon Air Learning Center and retired from Chesterfield Co. in 1999. Her daughter, Kendall M. "Betsy" Lamb; brothers, Dr. Robert N. Berezoski and Clements T. Berezoski; and close family friends, Gabriel Crouch and Joseph Crouch survive Mrs. Miller. Memorials, in memory of Mrs. Miller, may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 326 Greene St., Augusta, Ga. 30901.

MURPHY
Claude Dean Murphy, 68, of Richmond, passed away Friday, May 24, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Lynda Murphy; five children, Roger, Sarah, David, and Mindy Murphy, and Deana Carroll and her husband, Gene; one stepson, Christopher Williams; three brothers, three sisters, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Sharon Carroll. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Shirley Murphy. The family will receive friends 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave. Funeral services will be held 12 noon Tuesday at the Salvation Army Church on Orcutt Lane. Interment will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

NELSON
Clarence F. Nelson of Chesterfield passed away May 23, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Alice Sester Oliver Nelson; sister, Thelma N. Snead of Richmond; and niece, Gay S. Capps. Mr. Nelson worked for E.I. duPont for 26 years, where he served as a supervisor for 21 years. He was a WWII Army veteran and served as a Tech Sergeant. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. and Monday from 6 to 8 p.m., and where funeral services will be held Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. Interment Oakwood Cemetery.

PARSON
Judith Jeffries Parson, 91, widow of Everette Benjamin Parson Jr., died Friday, May 24, 2002. A native of Shackelfords, Virginia and former resident of Stony Creek, she is survived by her son, Everette Benjamin Parson III of Mt. Laurel, New Jersey; her daughter, Miriam C. Perrin of Ashland; three granddaughters, Maria Parson Little and Robin Parson Davis of Laurel Springs, New Jersey and Kimberly Parson Plotts of Stratford, New Jersey; and six great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at the Atlee Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, Route 301 and Shady Grove Road, Mechanicsville. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. ROBINSON
George Waverly (Sonny Boy) Robinson went to be with the Lord, May 23, 2002. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Waverly Sidney and Isabelle Fleming Robinson. He leaves to cherish his memory, a loving and devoted wife, Bertha T. Robinson; two loving and devoted children, Thealisa R. Hopkins (LaMont Sr.) and Fletcher S. Robinson Sr. (Michelle); five loving grandchildren, Montisa, Fletcher Jr., LaMont Jr., Waverly and Ta'nae; a loving sister, Lucy R. Johnson (Rev. Joe Johnson); four sisters-in-law, four brothers-in-law, a host of nieces, nephews, relatives; and friends, among them two special, Barbara Turner and Artto Fleming. Remains rest at the Robert Mealy Funeral Home, Goochland, Va. Funeral services will be held Monday, May 27, 1 p.m. at St. Mark Baptist Church, Maidens, Va. SHIRLEY
Katherine (Ceil) Shirley, 87, of Richmond, passed away May 24, 2002. She is survived by her son, M.G. (Mike) Shirley and his wife, Dorothy of Roswell, Ga.; daughter, Kay S. Boteler and her husband, Herb of Virginia Beach; grandson, Michael Shirley and his wife, Toni of Temple, Ga.; granddaughter, Kathy Smith and her husband, Craig of Alpharetta, Ga.; and great-grandchildren, Tanner Smith and Jake and Victoria Shirley. Mrs. Shirley was a member of the Chesterfield Chapter No. 139 of the Order of the Eastern Star. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday, with a procession leaving at 12:30 p.m. to Dale Memorial Park, where a 1 p.m. graveside service will be held. Diane Dickinson Spivey Smethers, 47, a loving wife, mother and friend and an avid racing fan, passed away May 23, 2002 at Bon Secours MRMC. Survivors include her husband, Mickey Lee Smethers; her loving mother and best friend, Mary Barlow Dickinson; her son, William Lee Spivey Jr.; sister, Mary Dickinson Filorillo Lewis; brothers, James G. Jr. and William A. (Billy) Dickinson; grandchild, Brianna Marie; nephews, Antonio, Christopher and Darryl Filorillo, Thomas, James III, Adam and George IV Dickinson; William Jr. and Chris Gatewood, Philip III and Jonathan Smethers; nieces, Nancy Moore, Jennifer Douglas, Kristie Mott, Angie and Rachael Dickinson, Angela Lewis and Samantha Molinda; brother-in-law, Johnnie Lewis; and sisters-in-law, Gwen B. Dickinson and Barbara T. Dickinson; her in-laws, Philip Sr. and Barbara Smethers; brothers-in-law, Philip Jr. and Keith Smethers, Bill Gatewood Sr.; sisters-in-law, Cindy Gatewood and Cindy, Vicky and Margaret Smethers; stepchildren, Bobbie Sue and Connie Jean Smethers. She was preceded in death by her father, James G. Dickinson Sr.; and her brother, George Dickinson III. She was employed at ECI as a senior communications support analyst for Philip Morris. She was also a member of Tree Ridge Community Church. SNEADE
Ella Daniel Sneade, 76, formerly of Colonial Heights, died Friday, May 24, 2002 at Augusta Hill Nursing Home, Augusta, Ga. Mrs. Sneade, a native of Lunenburg County, Va., was the daughter of the late Walter A. and Fannie Callis Daniel, and the widow of Raymond C. Sneade. She retired as the records administration officer for Fort Lee, Va. She was a charter member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, Colonial Heights, Va. Mrs. Sneade is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel C. and Jane Dazet Sneade of Chesterfield, Va., and Ronald W. and Claudia Pittman Sneade of Milledgeville, Ga.; three granddaughters, Amy Sneade Hobgood of Atlanta, Ga., Meredith Brooke Sneade of Milledgeville, Ga., and Jennifer Brockwell Pelotte of Nashville, Tenn.; one great-grandson, Zachery Pelotte; two sisters, Edith Daniel Cliborne of Kill Devil Hills, N.C., and Betty Daniel Payne of Virginia Beach, Va.; and one brother, Lewis F. Daniel of Midlothian, Va. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 29, 2002 in the Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights, with Rev. Donald L. Staples Jr. (DJ) of Laurel, Maryland, formerly of Richmond, Va., departed this life May 22, 2002. He leaves to cherish his memory one daughter, Eboni Staples; parents, Donald and Judith Staples Sr.; one sister, Dawn Staples; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph E. Armstead Sr.; paternal grandparents, Dorothy and the late, Cascoe Staples; several aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends; one devoted, Denise Didigu. Maria F. Palumbo Stelly, age 83, of Richmond, died May 21, 2002. She was the widow of Albert Stelly of Beaumont, Texas and is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Anton J. and Pratt Peace Stelly; two grandsons, Albert Watson Peace Stelly and Anton de Graffenried Stelly of Richmond; and a brother, Vincent L. Palumbo of Edgewater, Fla. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Beaumont, Texas. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Benedictine High School Athletic Fund, 304 N. STONE
William Thomas Stone Jr., 63, of Keysville, died at home May 24, 2002. Bill is survived by his wife, Patricia Harvey Stone; his mother, Helen Stone; his sister, Sandra Comer; two children, Cyndi Osborough and Billy Stone; two grandchildren, Kealy and Kip Osborough, all of Virginia Beach. He was a member of Southside Masonic Lodge 191, Pamplin, a retired construction superintendent and a former member of Appomattox County Rescue Squad. A memorial service will be held at Browning Funeral Home in Keysville on Tuesday, May 28 at 2 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Charlotte County Rescue Squad, P.O. SUTPHIN
Mr. Carl H. Sutphin Jr., 83, of Richmond, died on May 25, 2002. He was retired from E. I. DuPont and was a WWII veteran serving in the 20th Air Force. He is survived by his wife, Katherine Hendrick Sutphin; brothers-in-law, Msgr. Frank J. Hendrick and Arthur C. Hendrick Jr.; sister-in-law, Anne H. Hendrick; and many nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and Monday, with a Rosary being said at 7 p.m. Monday at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart where he was a member.
